9 reviews for Bliss Salon & Day Spa
It seems as though people have many hit or miss experiences here, but I have to say after going in for a couple different services at Bliss, all have been top notch.
Brow wax: I'm greek, unruly brows run in the fam, well actually unruly hair in general runs in the fam, but the brows really gotta be tamed. I like them thick, but not quite ala Brooke Shields, so I get them waxed. I have gone to two different gals at Bliss and both left me with perfectly groomed brows with not a hair out of place. Price was right as well.
Hair Cut: Tiffany took my lame limp hair and cut some bangs and some new life into it. I was scared but she was giggley and talkative the whole time, it ended in a win win situation. She even took the time to show me how to properly blow dry my hair straight rather then trying to sell me a bunch of product that I would have bought and never used.
I think the place is great. I only went origionally because it was so close to my house, but it is a little gem in the Clinton neighborhood. The gentlemen that works the front desk always has a friendly smile when you come in and on one occasion they even had huge cookies out for guests. Anyone that supplies me with free food automatically gets an extra star.
Have only been for massages, which Mr. Kitty swears by and I like a awful lot. We heart Callie, the Australian therapist - she has great energy. So it constantly makes me wonder WHY she works at Bliss.
Take your worst nightmare of hair stylists who think they are all that and a bag of Chips Ahoy, get them talking about their genius for putting orange or purple stripes in people's hair or waxing eyebrows REAL loud like and pepper the whole thing with crazy high price tags. WHILE you're trying to have a massage.
I'm not going to find self esteem or relaxation from a place that has a cool couch in the lobby but a bunch of annoying ho cakes on staff.
By the by, take note of reviews on other sites and how many of the reviewers are one-notes - I tend to appreciate critiques from people who review more than one place meself.
I am soooo glad I went to this place prior to reading these reviews. I totally would have passed. And totally would have missed out.
I'm a fairly new transplant, and began going to Bliss in October, primarily because of its close proximity to my house. Rolled the dice, got Chelsa, who talked me into a pretty radical change, and about six inches off. BINGO. I don't remember the last time a haircut has inspired so many compliments.
Since then we've been modifying, growing out, etc. Don't let the other reviews scare you off, I'm not sure about the rest of the staff but Chelsa is pretty terrific.
Hands down best bang trim I have had in ages. If you know me, you know that I will travel salon to salon if I have to for a decent trim if I have to. I can't trust myself with a pair of scissors, it always ends up looking like Phil Spector or something else horrible.
10 dollar bang trim... for some seriously needed TLC. Chelsa worked her magic in a matter of more than just a few minutes, it was art. No matter how shitty the economy is, I still need to look beautiful!
I tend to have a problem when I get my hair cut. No matter how many times I tell the stylist that I don't OWN a hair dryer, they always, always tell me to use a hair dryer after they have cut my hair!
Not so at Bliss. I mentioned my strange hair care regime and my stylist said it wasn't a problem. She made helpful recommendations about how to style my hair (without any power equipment) and the cost included a shampoo, scalp massage, and hand massage. It was almost a mini-spa!
That was almost 6 months ago and it's time to go back. Since then, they have added another business called Bella Derma that specializes in skin care and hair removal. So there is even more to choose from.
Overall: Highly recommended. The only drawback is the price (about $65 with tip) for a cut and shampoo. This isn't too bad for every few months, but it may not be good for short cuts that need a lot of maintenance.
Update: As of late 2007 under new ownership and most of the good stylists have left.
I got a set of highlights done here because I had a gift certificate. The results were atrocious. I had blonde highlights starting .5in away from my scalp, and a bride of Frankenstein white streak up the side of my head. Terrible.
I will not go back. The previous owner, who I loved, now owns Primp. Go there.
Another Update: The owner of this place rated the salon 5 stars and made it sound like she was a customer, whats up with that?
UPDATE AND STAR REMOVAL & Yelper FRAUD ALERT:
**Sabrina, my hair goddess mentioned below, has left the salon and started her own. You can see my friend Melissa P's review of what happened to her when she tried another stylist...disaster. I can attest to the hideousness of her highlights and tell you she wasn't exaggerating about the distance between her scalp and the highlights OR the Haley's Comet sized streak on her left side. Anyway...avoid bad highlights and take my advice...find Sabrina's new place "Primp" and go there instead. She would NEVER let something that bad walk out of her salon no matter WHO did it.
LASTLY...the Yelper who rated this place as 5 stars? She is the OWNER of the salon. "Laura H." as she calls herself is a bogus Yelper AND falsely promoting her own business. Booo, Laura H. Boooo. Fraudulent Yelping is very uncool.

Let me tell ya....I had been to Evolution, and Bella Pearl (both were highly recommended for color) and been burnt. I left Evolution looking like I had been struck by lightning repeatedly. Bella Pearl was decent with color, but I paid more each time I went there, and it would sometimes take 3-4 hours to get a basic weave.
ANYWAY...I finally found Bliss and I was a little gun shy about salons in Portland. I scheduled a meeting with Sabrina and talked with her about all of my past experiences and what I was hoping to achieve with my hair (heath and happiness, right?). She was empathetic, and totally walked me through the processes she liked using to revive stressed hair and still be able to color effectively.
D-DAY finally came and I went in for my cut/color. 3 hours later I was a hair goddess! My hair felt new and amazing and looked FANTASTIC. Sabrina was great the whole time...and continued to ease my worries by describing the process as she went. (I admit I was still a bit paranoid). She also taught me new ways to style my hair and has never once pushed product on me.
BOTTOM LINE: If you can find someone like Sabrina, you go back. I went to her for 2 years, every 8 weeks. It was a great relationship and I'm playing with my budget now to see if I can't just fly back to PDX every 2 months for a hair appointment. Yup...that good.
I have been searching for a good salon in Portland for the past year, and loved that this one was close to home, but unfortunately was very disappointed by my experience - but it should be noted that my experience was limited to one service. I went in twice to have my hair dyed, and hated the result both times. It was a fairly simple request -- match basic brown, just color the roots. Both times the color was completely off and WAY darker than I had before or than I wanted. It was also extremely over priced for what you get.
Just moved to Portland and desperately needed a haircut....always dread rolling the dice on a haircut. I know it grows but I so hate to walk around like a humiliated poodle for even a few months. Bliss was recommended to me and I am so glad I listened.
I'm a new mom so I don't always have a lot of time to style & primp...but also wanted a change from my shoulder length bob. I explained this to my stylist and ended up with the most perfect...and more importantly versatile...cut.
Walked in feeling dumpy and walked out feeling like a beauty queen, only with way less make-up and hairspray.
Overall: Highly Recommend! Nice environment, not pretentious. My cut was $40, plus tip...well worth it! Even for my new short do!
