I love the snap on their hot dogs. Not sure what brand they serve though. The relish is good but doesn't blow me away. Good dog for a decent price.

I have been going to this place for 40 years, my parents before me, and my grandparents before them. One of the owners shared with my grandmother the recipe for the relish probably over 60 years ago. My mom and I have it and have never shared it, nor do we ever plan to. The relish is what makes it. An absolute must try for hotdog lovers!

Gimme two. TWO!
I love Blackies. Went often with my dad as a kid and still visit every time I'm in CT. Their dogs don't have a strong hot dog flavor which I think makes them appealing. I'm not a relish guy but I did have it before and it was good. Spicy mustard on a their dogs are best followed by birch beer...on tap! This place gets ridiculously busy in the summer so you may have to wait for a parking spot. -

Absolutely love the place and have been going there for 30+ years. Hotdogs are regular Hummels but I believe they are deepfried in peanut oil which gives them much more taste and gives the skin a nice snap when bitten into. The relish is what makes the hotdogs over the top delicous so is a must. The cheesebugers which are small in size are incredible as well so make sure you try one! There are no fries at Blackies...just hotdogs, cheeseburgers and potato chips.
Place is special to many of us who grew up nearby and has barely changed its decor, employees or menu for decades which we all appreciate. Owners and workers are always friendly and its just a great place to stop by for a quick bite. Pisses me off that I always end up craving that place on Fridays which is the day they are closed! -
Review from Edward O.
Blackie's is a simple, no-nonsense roadside joint in the tradition of Ted's and Louis' Lunch. The relish is indeed unique. They do a few basic things very well, and will regard you with suspicion if you ask for anything that is off their menu.
The tradition of being closed on Fridays is a holdover from observance of Lent. -

I'm no hot dog connoisseur but Blackie's is super tasty. It's a CT staple. Blacky's will always hold a sentimental place in my heart, as I grew up right in this area. They also had one of those old school bowling games - which as a little boy, was crazy fun to play.
You're not going to find better hot dogs then this and even if you get lost on the way there, it's worth it. -

Wonderful hot dogs. This drive-in is a Connecticut institution. Unlike Super Duper Weenie, you won't find strange hot dog concoctions with names like The Californian or The New Englander here. That formula might fly in Fairfield County but this ain't Fairfield County. Blackies is located in real Connecticut and people here like things simple.....including their hot dogs.
If you're looking for variety you won't find it here. Blackies doesn't serve french fries or any side dishes. In addition to the hot dogs, they sell bags of potato chips and fountain drinks.
Regarding the comment "a hot dog is a hot dog". I guess that's true for some because apparently they can't tell the difference between a Nathan's and Hummel's hot dog. Thankfully for the rest of us, we can tell the difference. -

We stumbled upon Blackie's after coming off I-84 on our way home from finishing another year of college. The place really is a hidden gem to those who aren't local, and I'm glad that we found it.
There's not too much to say, and I don't want to spoil the experience of entering Blackie's cool dining room. Just sidle up to the counter and place your order. As some of the reviews here mention, they do know what you're there for, so just tell 'em a number.
The 'dogs are as good as they get; the hype is for real. They make an amazingly good relish that goes very well with the dogs.
If you happen to be driving through the area, this place is definitely worth a visit.Listed in: Best Bets

Cheap, simple dogs, tasty house relish, birch beer, and fantastic old building. This is the kind of place I want a hot dog. What a great relief from the McDonald's, etc., of so many highway stops.
It's a simple two-mile trip parallel to 84 to get to Blackie's then back on -- off Exit 26 and back on 25 going west, or reverse going east. EZ-off, EZ-on, as the billboards like to say. -

Not to be Debbie Downer here but I don't get this place. I went on an afternoon on my way to Waterbury expecting hot dog greatness and I got a limp dog on a cold bun that looked nothing like pictures of dogs from Blackies I had see on Road Food and elsewhere. I'll give an extra star for the cool building and general experience and local ambiance, and maybe because there was just something seriously wrong with what I was served in an out-of-the-ordinary way.
With all the raves around here I may give Blackies another shot, it's cheap enough, but I'm hoping my one visit was just some sort of really weird anomaly.Listed in: Hot dogs in Connecticut

I've been going to Blackie's Hot Dog Stand for years, ever since my dad took the whole family to the place when we were all kids. They have great dogs and a very original relish. My dad used to make and bottle his own root beer, but we would always get the birch beer on tap and we always loved it. My dad tried to make a batch of birch beer, but it wasn't as good. Dad's root beer, by the way, was better than A&W's. Blackie's looks like an open garage with a long counter on a corner with a large parking lot. In the Spring & Summer it is packed, even with the less expensive hot dogs at Costco down the street. I was worried about Blackie's since the $1.50 dogs with soda arrived at Costco. However, judging by the crowds at Blackie's they are still doing well.

Forget about it.
Hands down the best hot dogs ever.
Sure the prices may go up each year (by a quarter) but it's worth it. These dogs are killer.
Word to the wise, don't go in and ask the girls behind the counter for a hot dog. They know that is what you are there for. Just tell them a number. I usually go with three: one with mustard and relish, one with relish, one with ketchup.
You must try their mustard and relish. Homemade. Amazingness.
Anyone wanna air mail me some Blackies? -

Blackie's dogs are pretty much the greatest dogs on earth. The spicy mustard and awesome relish are amazing. It's a must try if you are anywhere in Ct. Also, get the birch beer, makes it even better.

I'm on a tour of all 169 municipalities in the state (http://onesixnine.blog...), so I've been to more than my share of hot dog stands... it seems even the smallest towns have them. This is one of those reviews I just hate to give, cause I LOVE the IDEA of Blackie's so darn much. And their service, prices, and relish were out of this world. And my bun was totally warm enough. But the hot dog itself was just a smidge too greasy for me to enjoy.... I don't know. I can't get 100% behind the food, but if I lived in Cheshire, I'd prob go there all the time.
Also, CASH ONLY. And closed on Fridays, except for private parties. -

When I head home to CT, on my way from Boston, Blackies is a frequent stop. The dogs are locally produced and grilled to perfection. And yes, they have a snap!
But it's all about the mustard and the RELISH! If you stop at Blackies, you MUST have the relish. -
Review from Jay G.

This place is an institution pure and simple. I have been coming here since I was a kid and getting the same thing, two Hummel Bros. hot dogs and a birch beer. The hot dogs are tasty, which is good because even if you only have one you will some how taste it on your breath for the rest of the day even if you brush. The grease dripping off the natural casing dog is a good reminder that this is just a treat and not an every day thing. If you are feeling really frisky then go for the chocolate milk shake, its made with vanilla Ice-cream and a metric ton of chocolate syrup - fantastic! Skip the burgers and potato chips, they are a waste of time and money. Enjoy this place for what it is, a uniquely cooked (boiled in oil) dog served in a Cheshire garage close to I-84. You won't be disappointed.
P.S. I would give this more stars, but its a hot dog stand for goodness sake! -

Their food is fantastic and the price is just right! The wait can get a bit long during the summer, but it's worth it. The only complaint is the parking when it's busy. Other then that it's great!

OMG! If you are looking for the best dog in this area, Blackies is your place. Order the choclate milk to wash them down. The homemade relish is awesome.

Review from Kevin K.
I don't get what the hype is about. Pretty boring dogs. I tried the special relish and all I can say is meh, I've experienced way better. The dog didn't have any snap, which I consider key. I would rather have chili and cheese than "spicy pepper relish" on my dog. One positive it is a cheap lunch.

Still good and still cheap - 3 dogs + 2 birch beers for less than $8. They are open until 8pm on Sundays! This is a great stop when driving I-84 between Boston and NYC.

Doctor recently told me that I have Hepatitis A, and all I could think of was how violently sick after my 1st & last visit to Blackies.

A great hot-dog joint. You definitely should go there wanting only one thing: a hot-dog. They also have burgers, but those are no fun. They have custom mustard and relish for their dogs, which is one of their draws. They also have birch beer on tap, I recommend it!

Blackie's sets the standard. The hot dogs are Hummel Bros cooked with peanut oil and served on a traditional New England style bun. But, as good as the hot dogs are...the relish is better. So good, in fact, that there is a 6 hot dog minimum for takeout in order to get the relish. They now sell the relish and will mail it too.
Blackie's has been in business since 1927 and is closed on Friday's (I'm guessing that's a holdover from Catholic tradition of "no meat on Friday's)
Blackie's is awesome. -
Review from Lauren R.
I have grown up eating Blackie's hotdogs and they are my absolute favorite. We have a few places in Waterbury famous for their hotdogs, but I would have to go with Blackie's for the King of Hotdogs in Waterbury. Their relish is amazing - we have jars and jars of it at my house. Although I don't like root beer or birch beer, I just have to have it when I go to Blackie's. Don't go here looking for fries or onion rings, it's just hotdogs and chips here!

I'm conflicted. I remember going to Blackie's hot dogs since I was a kid. It's just so familiar. The chocolate milk cartons. How you order by telling them a number and they yell it back to the cooks. "Three!" The bowling arcade game in the back. You slide a puck down this little alley, do you know what I'm talking about? The great homemade mustard and relish. The toasted buns. The fact that it's always closed on Fridays because they don't believe in eating meat that day. They're still the best hot dogs I've ever had. But the last time I went there, I got majorly sick, probably from those hot dogs. It was enough to turn me off hot dogs for a while, and I haven't been back to Blackie's. I really hope it was a fluke. They're really good dogs. Maybe one day I can summon the courage to go back.

Love the relish and the Birch Beer! Great time-warp feel there. And in warm weather, they open the overhead doors at the front of the restaurant, which gives the place a great drive-in atmosphere.

First, let me say that I'm a vegetarian 99.9% of the time. However there are moments when I fall off the wagon, usually for things like bacon or hotdogs (I know, it's dreadful) So, when my husband & I read the review for this place, I agreed to go along and try one of these hotdogs. Well, I don't get it. My husband is not a vegetarian, and he didn't get it either. We both agreed that the hotdog was so-so. I wanted to fall in love with the relish but couldn't. I wanted to like this place, and admit that the place itself is interesting in a weird way. When we got there it was already kind of busy but within moments a huge wave of people appeared and a line formed out the door..crazy stuff. I'm sorry that neither my husband or I can give this more than two stars, but it appears that the general public is in love with this place.Go figure.

Not the cheapest hot dogs around, but definitely some of the best. Also, they have birch beer on tap which many restaurants don't have.

Another over-rated hot dog stand! Honestly, a hot dog is a hot dog to me, but since I heard everyone in town raving about Blackie's I had to see for myself. All they are, are Nathan's hot dogs! If your hungry then I guess this is the place for you but a few miles into town you can eat at the Notch where they have a better variety of food and not EVERYTHING is not fried!

Review from Dan C.
This place looks like a crime scene - a sketchy, "old-school" hot dog stand off of I-84... sounds like a recipe for disaster, stomach ache, or both. But, no, no, no, there is some really good eatin' here at Blackie's. I went here for the first time with my bosses (who grew up in CT). I was grossed out by the idea of eating greasy hot dogs in the middle of the afternoon, but I jumped into the deep end anyway. The dogs are delicious, albeit greasy, as you would expect. They are far better than Dodger dogs at Dodger stadium in LA, better than the ones at Wrigley in Chicago, and definitely better than Gray's Papaya. So if you are ever blasting through CT on I-84, take a break from all that driving and head on over to Blackie's for some really good dog's!

Review from Lisa M.
Definitely a stop if you happen to be in Cheshire, especially in the summertime when the garage doors are open. The dogs are good, buns forgettable, but it's their hot pepper relish that makes it so popular. Great for a quick stop and a cheap lunch--very quick and efficient service. The history speaks for itself.

Great hot dogs, haven't been here in a while though. It's also semi-difficult to find, off the beaten path a bit and even then it's tucked away so you may miss it.

A good friend, Mark Angelos and I were hauling a full trailer behind a pickup truck on the way to Florida west on 84. Suddenly Mark grabs the wheel and says TAKE THIS EXIT! what? TAKEITNOW! ok, why? Because, we're gonna have some hotdogs at Blackies! Trusting in Mark's road food knowledge, I cut across a couple of lanes of not happy CT 84W traffic and just made the Cheshire exit. Blackies Hotdogs is just up the Waterbury Rd. from the exit and worth every bit of effort to get there. Like the other posts tell you, just let them know how many dogs that want, load'em up with mustard and relish, get a milk or soda and then shut up and eat. Good eats! If you don't like the fare, maybe check your pulse.

SO EASY, SO CHEAP AND SO YUMMY! Blackie's always makes the best dog with the right fixings...the relish is worth the trip alone! There truly aren't better hot dogs anywhere...so come down, take a lunch break and you certainly won't break the bank . Enjoy!

I'm not a hot dog kinda gal, but I can speak for the burgers - they're simple, and sometimes, less is more.
Every so often you get a burger with a burnt taste to it, but honestly... I don't mind. The place is so cozy-feeling to me. I'm fine with scraping off a burnt part for the friendly atmosphere that you get at Blackie's.
Oh, and the birch beer? DELICIOUS!
