Black sand? No way! I just had to see this. Funny thing is, I didn't realize this was a nudie beach until I was about to leave the house. I went back on Yelp to look for tips on finding this place since and yeah, my GF cracked up pretty hard when she heard I was taking her to a nudie beach. But no, I swear, I wanted to see the black sand!
Finding this place was such a PAIN! I didn't realize Cozelman Road was a 1 way road. After stopping at a few points of interest that we both thought were it, it wasn't! We could see the damn beach but had no idea how to get it it. So for anyone that wants to check it out... take Bunker Rd up then on to McCullough Rd and turn right on Conzelman. The drive down along the coast really had a European feel to it. I sure didn't feel like I was in the US anymore. BEAUTIFUL!
The 10 minute downhill hike to the beach was okay but the 15 minute uphill hike wasn't fun. I already worked on my legs at the gym the day before! FML. Not to mention, neither of us were dressed for it. I thought it was going to be a cold day so I was layered up in casual clothes. Geezus! It was 80º and hiking in the dirt through trees and shrubs doesn't help the heat.
We made it and black sand does exist! It's such a beautiful and peaceful place. I would come here a lot if it wasn't for the drive and hike. Very private. Very quiet. Very clean. Very nice view. Awesome place to come clear your head.
I would give it 5 stars but the idea of that hike with beach supplies & a cooler does not sound fun at all.
Ahhh... one of my favorite places to lay out nude on the beach!
I am a proud nudist! (good body, and still young enough not where I would freak someone out or make them throw up)
Secluded from all the other rift raft, and not overly crowded, and you aren't overly gawked when going full glory in the sun. It is nice to let it all hang out, and not worry about freaky people coming up to touch it.
Overall, it has some of the best views of the headlands, gg bridge, and of the coast. It is a hike back up, but good for the mind, body and soul.
Great beach! Somewhat of a trek down the mountain but pretty quiet, private and yes, the sand is really black..good alternative to Baker Beach, not very crowded and easy parking.
I just went to this beach for the summer solstice, and it is now my favorite beach in northern california. The drive is beautiful, the black sand absorbs the heat of the sun providing just the right temperature to contrast with the slightly chilly pacific, nice hidden alcove at the end by the nude section. It's a panoramic view, and secluded enough to feel like you have arrived in heaven.
There is a hike to get down and get back up, but it also serves as a good filter for the people that want to work a little bit to get to the beach.
I really want to give this beach a 4.8 stars, as the only the downside I can see is that during cold/windy weather it could get on the miserable side.... But definately consider this beach if it's one of those rare hot san francisco days like today!
I've lived here 10 years and had never heard of, much less visited Black Sand Beach. What a beautiful, secluded, idyllic spot! Such a short, easy drive from SF. It's a bit of a hike down to the beach, but well worth it! The sand is stunning! Great picnic spot! Also, dogs are technically forbidden, but there's NO ONE there to complain! Can't wait to go back!
My buddy Matthew G. and I spent part of July 4th at Black Sands Beach, and I must tell you: I'm Hooked. Not only does it cater to people like me, that prefer tanning in the nude but also who enjoy strolling around in the beach naked.
At first I thought it would be an endless trek to get there (as in Baker Beach) but I was wrong. Its quite the dramatic drive over the GW Bridge and then through the rolling hills in Sausalito. Once you park your vehicle, you walk down a beautiful ravine (btw careful with the posion oak) with aprtial view of SF across the bay, then you arrive at this striking secluded rocky cove of black sands Another great aspect of this beach is that it caters mainly to a gay crowd, of attractive nudists and/or those confortable with nudity around. I can't wait to go back a few more times this summer.
Cozy and somewhat private beach just a short drive outside of the city over the Golden Gate. The hike down toe the beach takes about 10 minutes. The view and the setting is really nice. It's perfect if you feel like you want to go to a beach outside of the city but don't want to drive the extra miles to Stinson Beach.
Bring some good walking shoes and wear long pants because there are a lot of overgrown shrubs along the path. The stairs are a bit precarious, but once you get to the beach, it's super relaxing. Great secluded place for a picnic on a sunny day.
I can't believe Black Sand Beach hasn't been reviewed yet.! I looked and looked but couldn't find anything. I wonder if it's called something else too maybe...? Anyways, this is one of my favorite beaches within short distance of the city. It is a nude beach, and is primarily gay, but I feel extremely comfortable there. Even when we're having that totally unexpected but completely welcomed 90 degree weather we get once or twice a year, the beach is near empty. I guess it may have something to do with the fact that technically it is closed, but they sure keep that trail nice and repaired for a closed access trail! Be careful for the poison oak, though, and the surf seems like it could be a bit dangerous. But if you're wanting to bare it all and don't want the crowds of Baker Beach, I definitely recommend Black Sands. The best directions I can give is that once you turn onto Conzelman in the Headlands, it's about 3.5 miles down on the left. Be prepared for a steep decline and trek back up (I recently went there last minute in flip flops and was a teeny tiny bit nervous).
