I haven't had like this great Burger in few years!
I put only 4 stars (actually 4.5 stars!) cuz this place was a bit small for me.
The place was pretty crowded I guess cuz Thursday night & the time around 7pm??
I definitely put 5 stars If I could sit comfortable in there so I may try to go there in some other day or time.
Me and my husband went this small bar & burger shop as through using the Groupon deal last night.
of course we didn't know about this place but I've been looking at Yelp pics and I was pretty excited to go cuz of the place look itself.
I really liked kinda old bar look and couldn't wait to tasting the burger...
Burgers were soooo good and we really liked the sides as well as others.
(I uploaded my pics on the list...)
We ordered..
1, Black Iron burger
I guess this is the signature burger in here cuz of the name.
Double patty, horseradish cheese and saute onion on top. it was very very simple and tasty!!!
Patty cooked just we asked as medium rare, very juicy and could tasted very beefy.
2, Black jack burger,
Single patty, no bean chili and jalapeno pickles on top.
(*description on the menu said this burger should have a "jack cheese" but it wasn't on my burger so I thought they forgot...)
chili was so good and I ate with french fry was just delicious!
3, Sides (French fry, Onion rings)
both was great taste and potion.
I was impressed by "salt" on the french fry!
Just enough kosher salt?? and black pepper they put and it was just right amount.
We didn't need to put any ketchup and other condiments till we finished all of them.
We definitely comeback to this place again soon!!! -

This is more the experience I was hoping for. The new management really did wonders as our group of 4 was treated with great attention and service. Big ups to Brad, who was behind the bar and kept the evening fun and basically the opposite of my last experience. Our waitress was also really attentive and on top of it.
Had the Black and Bleu with grilled onions and it was solid, still juicy like the first time but just overall better because of my mood. Washed it down with the Lobster Ale and proceeded to have an awesome rest of the evening.
Only downside - I smelled like burger for the rest of the night. Hmmm, maybe no downside then...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Yummy burgers, perfectly crispy/salty fries and onion rings. The beers on tap change seasonally and always go well with the food. I need to try of the milkshakes soon. There is a Guinness cookie flavor that has my name on it!
The place is small, but quaint, and it can attract an annoying crowd later in the evenings, (especially on weekends) but it's a good spot in the neighborhood for a burger. -
Review from Athena C.
I had high expectations for Black Iron Burger but my dream was dashed when I got my turkey burger. It was extremely dry. I know turkey burger is rarely juicy due to lack of fat in turkey. It should not be as dry as cardboard nonetheless.
My husband tried the Black and Blue Burger, which is a black Angus beef patty with blue cheese on a toasted bun. Their bun is toasted to so crusty I love it. The burger itself is alright. They blue cheese is not spread out evenly so the part that lacked it was also dry.
Luckily I did have a coleslaw side. It was refreshing and fresh. The fries are very crispy and a little salty. The shop itself is more like a dive bar with a few TVs hanging on the wall and there are no more than 10 bar tables around. This place does not make it to my top 10 list. -

Deep fried broccoli! Burgers were not bad either. Especially the one with chili on it. Black Iron is a fairly small space, and at around 7PM on a Wednesday, it was packed. It was still packed a bit after 8 when we left. They have a decent beer list. Service, while a little slow due to the small staff, packed bar, was great. It can't win 'favorite burger' from me, but if I am ever in the area again, I would definitely consider going back. Our favorite thing was the veggie fries, which were deep fried broccoli with some cheesy dip. Yes, I have probably significantly shortened my life, and I don't feel great at 6AM the next day, but I would eat all of those broccolis again without hesitation.

Great little burger/bar spot with tall tables and stools.
I came with a friend on a quiet Tuesday and a very young guy served us. Was a little worried the same waiter was also our chef and bartender but he was nice and did a great job.
Ordered 2 burgers, root beer, and friend ordered a milkshake. Burgers came out perfectly med. rare and the fries/onion rings were good. Awesome toasted bun as well. Also a surprise hit was the milkshake, should definitely expand on pushing that out more.
Was all good till a bearded guy who seemed like the manager/owner came in. I have words of advice for big guy...Take a chill pill. You totally ruin a good vibe, if business haven't been good it's probably cause of you. Take it easy on the staff cause the food and service is awesome.
I had a Groupon deal so was definitely a steal. However I would come back again if the quality of the food stays the same. Price is decent for a burger joint in Manhattan (would have been $15 a person including drinks). I've paid more for worse and this one was pretty damn good.
-.5 for big guy
-.5 the place could be a little cleaner. -

I came here on a Sunday evening and it was pretty dead/quiet. We sat down at a high top, and were waited on immediately. The bartender let us try the house brew which we ended up ordering.
I ordered a regular burger with jack cheese, bacon and chili cooked medium. It came out exactly as ordered. The burger was juicy and delicious. It was cooked exactly medium. The chili was spicy but didn't detract from the overall flavor of the burger. The bacon added a nice crunchy texture to the burger. It was a great combination and I'll order it again next time I'm here.
We also ordered fries and onion rings to munch on. The onion rings were made with a light batter and were flaky. I'd give them a 3/5. If you really love the taste of onions you'll like them more than I did. The fries were a little oily but I thought they were pretty good. I'd order them again as they complemented my chili burger well. They were not overly crisp, maybe a little bit soggy but I like them that way.
With just food it was around $15 per person which is good in my book. I especially enjoyed the Black Iron Brew which was a light beer but had a really good flavor to it. Next time I'm in the area I'll come back to Black Iron. -
Review from Saskia S.
I really wanted to give Black Iron Burger Shop more than 3 stars. I don't know why. Sometimes I just get invested in a place before I even try the food. But, I had a 3 star meal...so that's what goes up.
We started with the fried green tomatoes. They were salty and tasty. Good start.
Then the husband ordered The Iron Horse, and I ordered the regular burger and then added most of the stuff with the Iron Horse (horseradish cheddar and grilled onions). Rare for him, medium rare for me. Sadly, both of our burgers arrived more like solidly medium. Oh, and they forgot the cheese on mine. So my burger had to go back for a bit.
Other than the not quite right cook level, the cheese just wasn't anything enough. Not enough horseradish, not enough melted-ness. Not bad, but it didn't add anything.
Fries were tasty, and we shared (Ok, the husband technically ordered and I just "borrowed" spoonfuls of) a milkshake with pumpkin ice cream that was also very good.
Important lesson: cook the burgers to order, or don't give us a choice! At least at a fast food restaurant, you know that your burger is going to arrive greasy and any which way they want. If you get to pick the cook time etc., I'm a fan of it actually arriving as requested! Oh, and when in doubt, MORE HORSERADISH!! -

Nice selection of tap beers here at this cozy little dive, and the flat-grill burgers are pretty tasty. Also has a good selection of side dishes and bar snacks -- the onion rings and fried zucchini are both worth a try.
There's maybe eight or 10 bar tables, with room for two people at each, and maybe another six or eight seats at the bar.
The low prices are definitely a draw - tap beers are about $5 or $6, and burgers about $9 or $10.
Great place to just chill, sample the taps and nosh your way through the above-average menu. -

Had a Groupon to this place. Came here with friends. Ordered a black iron burger medium well. Burger was very tasty and moist despite being medium well. Horse radish sauce and cheese were perfect amount. Onion rings were fresh and homemade. Fries were good. Wouldn't recommend the red velvet milkshake--too sweet for my taste--but fiance liked it. Fried pickled tomatoes weren't that great either, but not a fan in general. Soda comes in giant beer glass. Would come back for the burger.

Stumbled, or more like fell over into this place hammered around 1am one night. I needed a remedy. No WAY was I about to go home and pass out at 1am like a rookie, nope! SO I ordered a double patty burger with bacon and cheese and a Diesel (thats america in a bottle for all you foreigners).
When I was finished I stood up from my bar stool and WHAAAM! I felt like I had just ingested raw energy! It was incredible, I don't think anything else could have changed my night around so drastically.
Bookmarked for my next trip into the EV -

The service was great, but I don't go to borderline dive-burger joints for the service. I go for the grub, so that's what I'll focus on.
Now, as a former server I know that you should always take our recommendations with a grain of salt. Trust me when I tell you that listening to your server here PAYS OFF BIG. He told us to skip the fries and go for the onion rings--win. He told us we'd love the Black Iron Burger--win. With that success rate, I was really hoping he'd offer some career advice or something, but oh well.
We decided on the namesake burger and the patty melt. The burgers were cooked to a perfect medium. The horseradish cheddar, as other Yelpers have said, is a damn good cheese and gives you something unique to remember the burger by. The patty melt was a tasty, gooey, crunchy (perfectly griddled rye bread) creation worth returning for.
The onion rings were THE BEST I've had in the city.
Yeah, I said it.
Some people claim they're too salty, but I've never made that complaint in my life. I thought the salt just added to the indulgence. They were crispy, flavorful inside and out, really obviously homemade. The fries were of the shoestring variety, fine but forgettable. Next time I'll try the veggie fries or double up on o-rings. Overall I really really liked this place. If the buns were slightly better and the fries could hold up to the rings, this would be a 5-star joint for sure. -

i found out about this place via groupon and decided to take advantage of the great deal (burgers, sides, and beer for 2). the hubs and i went last night and enjoyed the food and atmosphere at black iron.
we had the turkey burger, the regular burger, and fries with beer that i can't remember the name of. we also ordered the pickled fried green tomatoes (which were "ok," though i am super judgmental of FGTs being a southerner and more conditioned to the real thing). everything we ate was super salty, but when coupled with the beer, it was well-balanced.
i think above all, the atmosphere and the service is what made us big fans. our waitress was wonderful and the environment is cozy and welcoming. i would definitely come again when i'm back in the area. -

Black Iron is no farm-to-table, organic grass-fed, trendy burger spot -- this is a small, smoky, divey burger joint/bar with a flat top grill and a deep fryer right next to the beer taps.
I had the single-patty, Black Iron burger with caramelized onions, which was just the right size. It left just enough room in my belly for a Lula's Sweet Apothecary peanut butter ice cream. (Although things felt a liiiiittle tight after the ice cream...) -

After taking a friend out in the EVil on a weeknight to celebrate his upcoming marriage, three of us stopped here to act like men and eat a burger.
The size is on the small side, you may have to wait and it's definitely not for large parties. The atmosphere is dark and smells of burger waft throughout....getting hungry yet?! We ended up pulling a few stools together at the bar.
The burger is fast food style patty. We all tried something different and split sides. Iron Horse burger....sounds kick a$$, how could I not try it. It's a double patty with horseradish cheddar and grilled onions. It was good but not as flavorful as I hoped.
The onion rings were definitely the winner over the fries and the veggie fries. Decent draft beer selection too. Good service from the bartender who was attentive and talkative. Solid place overall and on par with a burger from Bill's. -

Try the Chipotle burger. So good, affordable, and great service. Small seating, but great for takeout. Fries are great too.

A delicious burger hides away deep in the East Village.
If you find yourself in the area, do yourself a favor and drop by for their cooked-to-order, juicy burger and fries/onion rings. I'd recommend the Iron Horse, a decidedly flavorful combination of horseradish cheddar and TWO patties (for $2 more than the regular burger). Burgers come with all the fixins (lettuce, tomato, etc).
My only complaint is that their sides (fries and onion rings), while insanely delicious, are portioned quite large - they seem to be meant to be shared. So if you're passing by yourself and pop in for a bite, be prepared to either leave something on your plate or leave feeling uncomfortably full.
All in all, friendly service hawking a delicious product is certainly worth a trip out to Alphabet City. -
Review from Peter D.
I've eaten an absolutely revolting number of burgers in my lifetime. And over the course of this meat odyssey, I've discovered what I like on a burger: bacon, a nice strong cheese (cheddar, blue, etc.), caramelized onions, and occasionally mushrooms and more.
Despite this knowledge, I can never resist ordering the ones that burger joints create in the hopes that I'll discover a better flavor combination. Here's a rundown of the ones at BIBS.
The Black Jack: jalapenos, chili and monterey jack. This might have been the juiciest, most delicious burger ever, but unsurprisingly, I couldn't even taste the beef under all that spice. I might as well have ordered a veggie burger with all that stuff, it probably would've been healthier, and tasted the same.
The Iron Horse: a double patty with horseradish cheddar and grilled onions. A completely unnecessary amount of meat, as reported by a man who constantly eats unnecessary amounts of meat. Gutbustingly good.
The Black & Blue: blue cheese and Cajun seasoning. I'm a sucker for both items listed. However, depending on the day, it can also overpower the beautiful beefiness.
The Patty Melt: you know what it is. I have actually never ordered this one, as I prefer a bun with my burger. However, a couple of my friends swear by it. (Please note that I never listen to them. They're girls.)
All in all, Black Iron is a solid shop, but unfortunately inconsistent. I've had both fantastic burgers and messy, overcooked slop. But if you're in the mood for a beer and a burger, it's usually a good decision.Listed in: alphabet city., the best burgers in NYC.

Review from Laura W.
(3.5) This is not a gourmet burger. It's just a good piece of meat, on a tasty bun with a pickle on the side. I had the Black jack- it's pretty simple, and sometimes that is exactly what you want in a burger. For those familiar with the chick-flick genre, please recall the scene of 'My Best Friends Wedding' in which Julia Roberts likens Cameron Diaz to Crème Brulee, which is delicious, but sometimes you just want Jell-o.
It satisfied. -

New York, NY
This place is fantastic, mostly because of three things: the burgers, the beer, and the ability to play footsie under the table if you so desire.
They make a mean burger here, and have a good beer selection to boot. Also, their fries are the awesomely crisp and delicious shoestring fries, and not those fat, gross, a-little-too-moist-for-comfort steak fries.
The atmosphere is chill, it's still pretty much under the radar which is nice, and did I mention they make a mean burger? -

Don't let the lame, two-years-and-counting outdated website fool you. This place is open and absolutely worth checking out.
Atmosphere is chill and dark, so it's a great place to hang out over a table full of beers and burgers. The burger is moist and, when combined with a split order of fries, more than enough food. Please try the horseradish cheddar.
Black Iron keeps it simple, so keep that in mind when you go. If you want to sit, stay awhile, and down some delicious burgers and beer, then this is the place for you. Pretension should be checked at the door. -
Review from Garrett P.
Queens, NY
Normally, I would shun a company whose website still proclaims "Full Site Coming Soon!" in the same space as a "Click Here To Help Us Win the *2009* Award for (something) From T.O.N.Y. mag" label.
When do I not shun said company?
When said company provides really juicy, extremely delicious burgers, perfectly crisped onion rings and average priced, but well selected pints.
My advice?
Black Iron Burger with Horseradish Cheddar, onion rings and a 6 Point Toasted Lager (if they still have that when you get there)
If you don't thank me for this, I don't want to know you.
I'm kidding. I still want to know you, but I'll never trust anything you tell me about food. Ever. -
Review from Claire V.
I'm pretty selective with my dining dollars, and a certain confluence of tastiness, atmosphere, and value is hard to find. BIB wins my affection for being:
- slightly off the beaten path, and not surrounded by hordes of admirers
- small/cozy, so that you are at peace to enjoy your juicy burger, but side-chatter can fill those many quiet moments when you and dining partner(s) are simultaneously chewing
- a great deal, especially before 7pm
- sure of themselves, offering a simple menu and turning out consistently joyous burgers with little more necessary accompaniment than a slice or two of bacon
Don't ever change. I love your dark wood and hundreds of bottles of decorative and usable ketchup. -
Review from Katie G.
I stumbled in here with Noah on a very sunny snowy day, when most people were not on the streets - but they were open.
I absolutely loved the burger I had. It was cooked perfectly - medium well (which I asked for), and noah had his medium-rare (also cooked perfect).
Not much to say. Cash only is slightly annoying - but otherwise, yes. Yum. -
Review from Susan s.
Black Iron Burger Shop must have changed ownership or chefs, because this past weekend, I ordered two Black Iron style and fries to go, and it was absolutely horrible. My burger was a soggy mess, it was barely medium rare, almost well done and the caramelized onions were gross. Our fries were so stale, and it tasted like MC Donalds sitting under the heat lamp all day.
Must of hired children to work there because I saw two boys behind the bar that looked like they were 16. I could of been mistaken but none of their staff members were friendly. If they even had a smile on their face, maybe I would of left a small tip like I usually do for their service.
I was recommended to try this place through a friend, and she even walked with me to pick it up! She saw our order when we got home and she shook her head in disgust too!
I should of went to Mikey's like my original plan. Never again on Black Iron! -

First let's start with what BIB is *not* good at/for.
- Air conditioning - the place was a sauna when i went. i was sweating balls. my (male) friend practically had his shirt off.
- Groups - i was at BIB for a going-away party. uh, not a good restaurant choice to host your 10 friends before you move out of the city. the booths are tiny, and there are a limited number of them.
Now, what BIB is good at:
- the burgers!!!!! omg, it was so good. i got the burger with jalapeno jack cheese. so yummy. it's what your'e always craving with a burger. you just want juicy, salty, fatty delicious-ness. these guys got it. go eat!! (side note- i ordered mine medium, but will opt for medium rare next time. it could stand to be a tad bloodier.)
- the veggie fries - they were deep fried green beans and they were awesome.
- beers - decent selection, and the Black Iron Brew was a respectable $5 and pretty tasty.
the burger was good enough to make me forget about the sweat dripping off my face. that's a pretty good burger.
also, upon leaving i noticed that the sign out front was encouraging passersby to "come inside and cool off!" i'd consider that false advertising, but again, the quality of the burger made me forgive them. -

I came to Black Iron to fulfill a patty melt craving, and I hate giving it only 3 stars - the atmosphere is spot on and the service was great. The burgers, though, were sadly underwhelming.
We had a patty melt and a Black Jack, and both were seriously lacking in flavor. The meat was perfectly cooked - medium rare as requested and with a nice crust - but just tasted like nothing. The chili on the Black Jack was similarly bland. A pinch more salt in the burger would have made us eager to return, as it is we might try again to see if we just picked an off day. -
Review from justin g.
Been here twice: first time was around dinner, a 2.5 visit. Second time was at lunch (cheaper burgers), a 3.5 visit.
First time I got a patty melt. The seasoning was either poor or nonexistent. Need more salt and pepper either on the outside crust or mixed in the meat.
Second time I scored a plain burger. A bit better this time in the seasoning department.
Both times, cooked to order. Both times, with fries that are serviceable.
Burgers are cheap during the day. I believe it's $5 before 7pm.
In the summer (remember that?) you can sit outside and enjoy your burger on the windowsill.
A decent local option, especially for a fairly cheap burger lunch. -

My friend and I had to come back after ducking out of a birthday party early. The burgers were just as good as I remembered them being, and we were quite content to just sit, sip our beers and eat our tasty and delicious food. Oh, horseradish cheddar... so so good...

Love the no nonesense, old school bar feel of this place!
It's clear what the main attraction is once you step inside: THE BURGER!!!! As a burger fan, I enjoyed the juicyness of the meat, the simple and just right seasoning and the size of the burger (it's not so huge that you need utensils or many bites to get the overall jist of the burger). And like many burger joints, you can decide to keep it simple ($7 burger gives you tomatoes, lettuce and onions) or add toppings like bacon, cheese, grilled onions, jalapenos for nominal fees. I have to say that the horseradish cheddar cheese on the burger is unbelievable!!
And if you're the type who wants unlimited access to basic condiments, napkins, and silverware, this place will bring a smile to your face. You'll see what I'm talking about when you eat here.
While it's not the best burger, it's definitely better than many I've had in NY (but this is coming from someone who thinks Shake Shack is overhyped). I plan to come back again for sure!
NOTE: The limited space and aroma of meat are not conducive for large groups and vegetarians.Listed in: Best Burgers

Their burgers makes you forget your face is dripping with sweat.
This time I brought some friends and all of us ordered the our burgers Medium Rare. EXCELLENT. You know the Bartender and the cook, are the exact same person during week days. And he spiced that burger and timed it just right. That beef was the perfect mixture of cooked and Bloody. After my first bite the foil was coated in that watered down flavorful blood.
Alright enough about their Medium Rare Expertise, those veg fries paired with a spicy mustard made me want to die and drink beer with them in a stasis of fried goodness.
The Black and Blue is great, the Black Jack Burger was INCREDIBLE. I got this when it was colder outside- but who knows maybe in warmer months it still distracts you from your sweating face : )
My friends were raving, and my belly was full. Home Run. -

Small cute place...the ventilation is not that good, cooking exhaust everywhere, when I went there was also no AC.
The burgers are of good size, I ordered falafel burger, which turned out to be too much... one can only eat so much falafel in one sitting.
Very good fries!!!
It's right across the street from my house so I would go again, but the last time I went was 2.5 months ago... -

On of the better burgers in the East Village. The burger combinations weren't original, but were well made. When I ordered a black and blue inspired burger, the patty came medium cooked, as requested, and I could actually taste the blue cheese. The onion rings stood out in my mind as being quite enjoyable. They aren't thickly coated in batter like some rings I've had, but are surrounded by a thinner coating of fried goodness.

Neighborhood goodness, for sure. This place has a signature burger aptly named "Black Iron Burger", it is heaven. A double-burger with horseradish cheddar (which btw, I would take a bath in, its that good) on a decent roll covered with sauteed onions. Normally, I load on the condiments and drown the burger, not necessary here.
A solid spot to meet up, have a good burger/beer and chill. Also note they don't have a full bar, just beer on tap. Didn't bother me one bit but thought it was a point to make.
Good start for the night, across the street from ACE bar, with others nearby. Make a night of the hood and start here. -

The Black Iron Burger was great. Juicy and flavorful.
The decor is cool, no frills but still looks classic.
You will definitely smell like burgers after wards.
You get a ton of fries, so one order would be plenty, even with a party of four.

New York, NY
The place has been artfully designed so that it looks like an aged diner that has accumulated various curios over the years. Bottles of Heinz ketchup line the walls, an old weighing scale with Obama's face plastered on it - and even a pair of double-bladed fans powered by a single pulley. Ingenious, I thought - but definitely not very good at generating much wind.
I got a Black Iron Burger for $7. After all, if the meat is good, I wouldn't need anything else to dress it up, would I? And true enough, the burger was juicy and flavorful. I ordered a medium rare - I personally thought that my burger was a little too rare, though. Still, it had a good mouth-feel save for the occasional moments when I bit into an extra-chewy spot or some gristle. The toasted sesame seed bun was delicious and absorbed all the burger juices up perfectly. I'm guessing the burger is 7 oz - only because the double patty burger description mentions two 7 oz patties.
I also got a side of fries. It's $4, which sounds expensive but they give you a pretty big plate that two people can share comfortably. The fries are fried to order, and are seasoned with coarse salt that gives it an extra crunch and zings of saltiness.
