3 reviews for Black Eyed Pea
This location is part of a shopping center built in the prairie architectural style. It looks like a white clapboard house, which is unique for a chain restaurant.
The quality of the food is great for the price. The service is not perfect, but would it be reasonable to expect four-star service at moderate prices? I'll take quality food first.
Something always goes wrong whenever I eat at any BEP, but they have always been very quick to correct the problem and apologetic. Maybe the cook is English-impaired and has trouble reading or understanding the orders. This time I was served shrimp instead of the salmon I ordered. I sent the shrimp back and got my delicious plank of salmon shortly thereafter.
The rolls and cornbread are always delicious. Buttermilk biscuits would be a nice addition to the basket. They're not just for breakfast in the South. Guess we can't have EVERY-thing. They do what they do quite well.
This is a pretty good Black Eyed Pea. It's true - they've improved since the 1980s or early 1990s. And this has become a good place to eat Texas Southern food such as chicken fried steak with cream gravy (and not the icky brown type).
The chicken fried steak is well made here and Dallas has voted it to have the best chicken fried steak in their city before.
Yes, this is Houston, and not Dallas.
But it still holds up pretty well. And the mashed potatoes are really worth getting. You can get broccoli with cheese for an extra side if you'd like - but you'd probably be safe with any other side as well. Just don't forgo the mashed potatoes that's truly homemade - they make it fresh by the hour.
Prices are really affordable as well. You also get complimentary bread and cornbread - and with butter. It's all good. Service was friendly and prompt.
Oh Black Eyed Pea, is it wrong to love you so much? Your chicken fried steak is positively amazing, and you're only charging me 9 bucks for it? Wait, and I get your homemade mashed potatoes (a CFS must) along with it? Surely you won't make me choose between your amazing broccoli rice casserole and my strange love for buttered carrots? Well, maybe one this time and the other the next. What's that? I get free delicious cornbread as well? Well slather some honey on it and let's call it a day. I'm sold.
