3 reviews for Black-eyed Pea
I grew up eating at The Black-eyed Pea... Jenn had never been before so I was more than happy to initiate her into the family.
I was drooling over the Potato Skins, but decided to opt for the Chicken Fried Steak. I ordered Baked Squash Casserole & Blackeyed Peas as my sides.
The rolls and cornbread were good. The cornbread was even better the next night crumbled up in a big glass of Sweet Milk. Yes! I am my grandfather's granddaughter.
Like Jenn said, the white gravy was a little runny, but it had a great taste. The steak was thinly coated in a crispy batter and there weren't any meatless corners like there are sometimes when some places make the batter compensate for a less than decent sized slice of steak.
I loved my Apple Crisp dessert. It was just the right size and at $1.99 it was the perfect price.
I hadn't been to The Black-eyed Pea in a year or so and now I'm craving Cheese Broccoli Soup. Jenn... we may have to make this a repeat offense.
I saw denorama f's review of Black Eyed Pea and decided I'd have to check this place out - since I'd never been and all. Aimee and I hit this place up last night and I was pretty impressed. We passed on appetizers this time, but there were a lot of options that looked delicious, but we were saving room for dinner and maybe dessert.
I got the Chicken Fried Steak with Broccoli Rice Casserole and Mashed Potatoes and white gravy. The chicken fried steak was delicious. Crispy in the right places, good flavor. Yum. The gravy was kind of runny - someone needed to add more flour, but it tasted good. The broccoli rice casserole was fantastic! Cheesy and the broccoli wasn't mushy and gross. I think that and the steak are tied for my favorite things last night. The mashed potatoes were good, but to me - unless they suck - mashed potatoes are normally just mashed potatoes. I'm not obsessed with them or anything. The warm rolls and cornbread were also yummy. I like the rolls better, but the cornbread was decent too - a little too dense for my liking.
Dessert was ok. We tried the personalized desserts -served in a martini glass! I had the chocolate cream pie thing and Aimee had the apple crisp. I wasn't a fan of whatever it was they used for the mock-crust, and it could have been colder and thicker. I'd of traded this for more broccoli rice casserole!! Aimee's looked good, but I was too full to try it.
Our server was nice and fast - he kept apologizing for things that we didn't even notice! Like bringing my drink as I finished it.. and the fact that our desserts were taking 15 more seconds than they should, but hey.. I'd rather have too much information than not enough I think.
This place is giving cracker barrel a run for the money on down home cooking (dinner style - cracker barrel still has my heart for breakfast) - and its closer to my house! :)
I decided to go here with my husband's grandmom for dinner. And boy was it a mistake!
Now, I have never been to any locations or anything like that and this place really sucked.
First our waitress was just slow and inexperience or dumb. I mean while she brings our entrees she doesn't even take the appetizer plates and the smaller plates at all!
And one of my pet peeves, not filling water and ice tea asap.
The only two great stuff was:
brocoli and cheese soup was pretty darn good. Actually great, so I was happy.
And the American Appetizer which we all split was good too. I really liked their potato skins and chicken fingers.
Then came the entree and bleh.
I had meatloaf and only ate half. It was lukewarm and the sauce on top wasn't good at all.
The veggies weren't good either (had brocoli and corn).
I tried my husband's chicken fried steak and it wasn't good either. I can't even explain why it wasn't good, just wasn't.
But seriously, the service was terrible and it was too bloody cold! Freezing in fact.
Yeah, we're not going back again.
