I got a Loading board in ~15 minutes from a helpful guy with a sweet handlebar mustache.

He kept it simple, and helped me replace my old board in a snap. All in all, I valued his experience over the clerk I talked to at Skate Works.

Very helpful and patient staff to help you decide on your next board. They even let me try a couple long boards out on the sidewalk outside to get a feel. If you are looking for a long board, this place has a pretty large selection to choose from.

Yesterday I went to Black Diamond Sports to purchase a Loaded Dervish. The staff there was very helpful, and answered all my questions. Constantine was behind the counter and was the zen master of everything longboarding. His expertise is top notch! I highly recommend visiting the store to check out their huge board collection and great staff.

I ended up leaving with a complete Dervish on some Paris BLUE metallic trucks, 75mm Avila wheels, and some Venom bushings. Super stoked.

P.S. I joined Yelp just for this review.

This review is regarding their online service.

I placed an order online for a Rayne Demonseed longboard for a Christmas gift to my boyfriend. This place offered the cheapest complete price and free shipping. I placed an order online on Friday night and received the board on Tuesday.

I'm so happy to know that there are shops in northern California that sell a large selection of longboards & process orders & shipments quickly. I've ordered boards online from shops on the east coast & southern California and it took me WEEKS to get a board.

So, for my 100th review, I think I'll talk about my new Rollerblades.

    They rock. :D

Ok so, back at the end of last year, before I moved here, my boyfriend took me on a date to the University area of Palo Alto.  We went to a sushi restaurant and were going to see a classic film at the cool theater but, we missed it. Haha.  While we were walking around however, I found myself gazing longingly at a pair of Rollerblades in the window of... you  guessed it, Black Diamond Sports.

Well, my boyfriend has been skating for 14 years and since his last girlfriend quit after her first time out, he recommended that I get a really cheap pair of skates, just to make sure I like it. Ok, I get that.   I got some cheap skates at Target... and I hated it.  The skates were impossible and my boyfriend, errr, not the best teacher.  I was DETERMINED to learn though so I took a class from 'Old Dude on Blades', Phil, and with the aid of his instruction better quality Rollerblades, suddely LOVED inline skating!  Also, Phil recommended that when I go and get new skates, I try Black Mountain for their personal care and competitive prices.

He was right.  The guys at Black Diamond are very knowledgable, not too pushy and just nice to talk to.  I went 3 days in a row.  The first day, I talked to Ken, who is only there occassionally I guess, and he showed me the skates I ended up getting.  I bladed around the shop a bit, managing to not break any of their displays.  I took their card and said I'd be back...

The next day, I brought my boyfriend back so that he could maybe catch anything I'd missed or didn't know about.  Konstantin and the funny blonde guy helped us this time, the nice girl was there again too.  My boyfriend liked the ones I liked (actually, he liked the really superdooperfastexpensivespeedskates) so I went ahead and bought them... and the 3-pack of knee, elbow and wrist guards.  They're Rollerblade Activa TFS - green.... I luv green (though I swear that's not why I picked them).  Heehee.   My tab was 240$ which was more than I wanted to spend but typical for a decent set of inline skates and guards it seems (I checked online).  They do have less expensive options - Rollerblades starting at 100$ (though they're not the best quality and not recommended).

The only problem was that they accidently gave me the wrong size so then again on the 3rd day, I had to drive all the way back up to Palo Alto and exchange them.  I'm really familiar with that store now!  I wish it was a little closer to me!  Actually no, then I'd probably be in there all the time, buggin the guys. Heehee

BTW, when you're driving W on University, you can turn left at the street just past the store and there's a parking lot just behind it, on the left.  I never found street parking on any of my 3 visits...

Ok... I'm gonna go out and practice now.  Today, will be my 3rd day on inline skates.  If you don't hear from me for a while...

Black Diamond is one of the best skateboard/longboard/rollerblade shops in the Pennisula. They have a big selection and the owners/employees really love their jobs. They are really a happy bunch.

All prices and ranges of equipment, so you can go there and get fitted to what you need and then upgrade later as you improve.

The store is next to Lytton Plaza and is in a cramped, small little shop next to Pizza My Heart. If they could, they would probably do better financially but I'm sure the high rents on Univ. Ave would cut a lot of that profit so maybe I am wrong.

All in all, Black Diamond is a top-notch board store. If you are looking for that then go there. If you just want to look, they will be cool with that and just answer your questions to try and help.

What a great place to get some sunglasses! They have a ton and only the best brands - VZ, Spy, Electric...

The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. One staff member helped me try on probably 30 pairs and offered an opinion which was helpful.

Yes, the shop is tiny but that just means more personalized service. You can't go unnoticed!

Black Diamond does what it can in such a tiny space. They're in downtown PA, so you know the rent is probably $1000/month per square foot. That said, expect to feel a little claustrophobic, and expect to fork over a bit more than you would if you were to drive out to a skate shop in RWC or San Jose. Yes, you're paying a convenience tax.

But, unlike a lot of richie-catering businesses, you're not trading off convenience for good service. Although it seems like their clientele are probably mostly yuppie bladers and parents spoiling their skater kids, the employees are all incredibly nice and knowledgeable about the products. I bought a new multi-impact helmet here and one employee waited patiently while I tried on practically every one they had in stock, telling me the benefits of one in comparison to another. I ended up spending about $8 more than what I would have paid ordering it online, but it was totally worth it to have my questions answered and get the fit just right.

I used to skate street back in the late 80's .  I was 155lbs back then and have grown, so I'm rockin' a full 225lbs now.   I wanted to get that carving satifaction again and started researching longboards.   I did my homework for a couple of weeks and pretty much knew what setup I was gonna get, but didn't know what board was gonna support my body mass.   So i decided I would need to visit a shop in person and have to stand on a few decks to see what would work/feel best for/to me.

I was recently having lunch in Mtn View last week and decided to check out the BDS shop since i was in the area, to see what they had and get my first in-person feel of a longboard.

When i walked in, the guys were willing to assist w/o being the "pushy salesman" types.   They also didn't size me up and act as if they "knew it all" even though I'm certain they know more about longboards then I.

We chopped it up for a good 30-45 mins about the different setups and i walked away with a pretty tight Dervish setup for under 3 bills....cheaper than purchasing online, anywhere that i could find. (and i've looked!).   So, I'm pretty satisfied about not having to question whether or not i got ripped off on my purchase.   Their prices on their website are true to the penny, so you don't get an estimated price online and then a big surprise in price difference when you visit the shop.  Nice!!

Today, is actually sunny, so I'm gonna take'r out for a spin and attempt to dance on this bad boy.   Just standing on the board has such a good feel to it!

All-in-all, the service was great here!   And after walking around this shop attempting to figure out what would be best to purchase at this time as a beginner, potential upgrades, etc.,  I was able to make a purchase decision comfortably with their help.   IMO, this shop has a great vibe and I'll be back for more goodies, no doubt.   Highly recommended!    Thanks BDS for being super patient, not laughing at my bazillion dumb-ass ?'s,  and for a real killer setup!!!

My husband and I were in the market for new sunglasses and the two places we bought them locally for the past 10 years had closed.  We both knew what brands we wanted (Smith & VonZipper) so I looked up local delaers and this name came up for both so we headed out there.

For being a small shop they had a huge selection of sunglasses.  They didn't seem to mind that we spent almost an hour trying on almost every pair they had, just to be sure.  They would check on us, but gave us freedom to do explore options.

We both left with new sunglasses.  After a mix up, my husband needed to exchange his the next day and they were cool about the transaction.

It was hard trying to get a hold of them by phone, which is why it's 4 instead of 5 stars. As far as skateboards and stuff go, we're not into that scene anymore, so I couldn't comment.  But the next time we need sunglasses we'll be heading back there.

My first experiance was walking in to an empty shop with no one in sight(employee or otherwise) by the time a cat came from in back another customer had arrived but with a complaint of being sold the wrong flex dervish.  They seemed to be able to noting for him because he had mounted it but not skated.  Wheel selection here is small, but nice deck selection.  They also have freebord and blades and as many shops a ton of sunglasses(guess that is a cali thing).

I just found my new hobby.

With the assistance of helpful and friendly staff, I found myself with a $199 pair of Rollerblades and a $39 worth of protective gears which I am sure I will be glad to have when the time for face plant comes.

It is a hefty price tag for this rollerblading novice.

That said, said novice was completely happy with the purchase, having spent 60 minutes rollerblading (more like, trying hard not to fall on my butt and chanting the mantra "knees bent, weight forward, knees bent, weight forward" - repeat 100 times) in Golden Gate Park with the best teacher anyone could ever ask for.

This is my local shop, so I might be a little biased, BUT the guys that work at BDS all ride, so they know what they are talking about.

For longboards they carry a lot of Loaded (of course, Loaded is the best!), but also Sector 9, Seismic, Rayne, Ladera, Flexdex, Comet, Landyachtz.  I think they are the only store in the Bay Area to carry some of the more exotic decks. Sector 9s are everywhere, but is there another store that has a Rayne Demonseed or Loaded Dancer in stock? I dont think so.

They also have short boards, minis, freebords, etc.

They don't have a massive truck selection (mostly reverse kingpin trucks: Paris, Randal, Bear), but they do have a comprehensive selection of Venom bushings, which is fantastic.

They regularly go above and beyond.  I had just bought a brand-new out of the box Vanguard deck, but didn't realize that it had a slightly weird shape (minor and cosmetic) until I got home. Constantine let me switch it out with no hesitation. He knows the value of treating customers well, and because of that I will go back to BDS for my next purchase ... who knows maybe a Carbon Evo next time ...

They also don't mind my 3-year-old son pawing their merchandise, which is extremely cool of them.

BDS is slightly pricier than an online retailer, but it's great to have a local shop, so we should support local businesses.

If you're thinking about getting into longboarding but aren't sure what to buy, go to BDS first!  They will help you. I bought my first Vanguard here in 2006, and they did not steer me wrong. I almost bought a plank (just because it was big, lol) and Constantine talked me into the flexy bamboo awesomeness of the Vanguard instead. Eternally grateful for that!

This shop has been my go to place for all skate-related things in the two years that I've spent in the area. Got my longboard and all the upgrades from them.

Black Diamond has a great selection of boards and the staff is always friendly and helpful - I've followed their advice on board and wheel selections and never regretted it.

Their prices are a little bit over what you can get online but their service is definitely worth the small markup. Some of the things are surprisingly cheap as well - I had to get griptape replaced on my board and they did it for me for under $10.

I love black diamond.  I might be partial my brother is friends with John the owner.  But even when I walked in there with no body knowing who I was, I was impressed.  Everyone is very friendly.  Constantine, tells you how it is and let you know what board is the best for your price point.  He doesnt try to move the trendy boards, but give the best board so you have an easy time learning.  I am going back for my second longboard soon.  My brother goes no wear else for his rollerblading gear.  The only negative I can think of is lack of floor place to really try anything out.

I tried to order a santa cruz long-board from their website but a few hours later they gave me a call telling me that it was discontinued when they tried to order it for me. I was pretty bummed but they worked w/ me over the phone helping me find a suitable replacement. I ended up getting a mini flexdeck. I'm still working on it though, a bit more agile and less stable than what I learned with. But its still small, well-priced and of good quality. The three things essential requirements for me. The staff was extremely helpful. Even apologetic for something that was out of their control. One of these days i'll have to check out their actual store. Two thumbs up for black diamond sports! If I ever stop wobbling off and landing on my ass, this is where I'd get another board.

I was looking to buy a new pair of inline skates and decided to try Black Diamond Sports. The sales guy was very helpful in finding for me my correct skate size, and gave great advice on what skates are better. I went in with a particular model in mind, but upon his recommendations I decided to go with a higher end model. I never looked back. One drawback for this shop is their minimal selection of skate accessories. They seem to have a good selection of skateboards, shoes, and bags though. Friendly service from someone who knows what they are talking about, what more could you ask?

I've been here a couple of times and all for longboards/lonboarding purposes so just to let you know, that's what I'm going to be reviewing.

The couple of times I've been here, I've been helped by John.  Dude is cool, chill, and extremely helpful.  First I was looking into mini longboards, looking for a fun ride in a compact size.  He was like "I got just the board for you."  Pulled out a beaut of a board that is the Ladera Purple Heart.  Not only does it look hot, it rides like fun times.

Today I came in looking for a longboard for my girlfriend.  We went in there with our 2 dogs and he was extremely cool with it.  I told him what we were looking for and he brought out a couple of boards and we ended up going with another Ladera.  He raved about Ladera saying how much better it was compared to your usual sector nines you see at Zumiez and what not and that they were a local company.  He's right.  Now my girlfriend has a chill, cruising type board that her dog and pull her on.

The shop is small, but they've got a humongulous selection of longboards and skateboard accessories.  They also have a group of longboarders (beginner-extreme doritos pro) that go somewhere near Stanford to bomb hills.  They said even if you're a beginner, everyone is really cool and they help each other out.  Check this place out, it's one of the best longboard shops in the area.

A small shop well stocked with emission-free alternative vehicles - think roller blades, skateboards, trick bikes and scooters - plus accoutrement. I bought my mom a xootr here and the guy was super friendly and helpful. Only downside was the return policy: we could return the xootr with no problems if she didn't like it...but only if it hadn't been ridden outside. Thankfully she loved it after one spin down the driveway!

Spent all day yesterday searching and visiting 7 stores all around San Jose. Gave up and did more searching on-line last night. I then found Black Diamond Sports. Called them up, asked a few questions and I was off to Palo Alto.

Inline selection is very good but I believe they only carry Rollerblade brand for in-lines skates. My problem is I do not want to pay $500+ for some elite skate that's more about price and brand then quality, nor do I want to buy junk that I'm going to be unhappy with as soon as I hit the deck. Black Diamond had exactly what I was looking for. They were very knowledgeable,  very friendly, and no pressure. After discussing experience, skating style, what I'm used to, what I had in mind before I walked in, etc., they helped me narrow it down. Just broke'm in and I'm very happy!

As for their prices, as soon as I knew I was gong in I determined what I was going to look at from their website. I then compared their prices with multiple other stores (same brand, skate, etc.). In every case, the prices were the same everywhere (or within $1). So I would not go here expecting to get a great deal compared with another location, nor would I expect to pay more than I should for the item. Their prices are fair and reasonable. What you gain is not driving yourself insane (as I did yesterday) looking for decent skates and not getting gouged. Also you cannot put a price on the quality of the knowledge and help you get in the store.

It was an hour on the freeway for me, and well worth the trip.  Out of the 8 stores, these guys are definitely  #1

The only place to get inline skates, for experienced skaters and first-timers alike. As a tragically unhip 40-something, I felt extremely self-conscious a couple of years ago when I walked into this trendy skate shop to buy my first pair of rollerblades. The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful, and did not try to upsell me on stuff I didn't need.
I have since bought a couple more pairs now that my skill level has improved, and I just won't shop elsewhere for skates. Their prices are very competitive, they have everything in stock, and they manage to always give you service with a smile even when they have a shopful of customers.
They also carry skateboards, longboards, and tons of urban fashion clothing and accessories like cool watches, shades, pants, shorts, shirts, bags, etc... all at very reasonable prices. Very highly recommended.

Small shop with mostly skate related items. My complaint is that they would not allow my to try the Xootr outside. Which, was  my main reason for visiting the shop versus buying online. I wanted to know if the scooter would be too bumpy on the road for practical use. I never found out as I wasn't willing to take a chance on faith for something that cost over $200. I ended up buying on Amazon, which gives me peace of mind through their return policy. I really had hopped that BDS would be more accommodating as I would much rather support a local business.

I found the customer service sub par as a new skateboarder. They did not offer me support or recommendations and the only reason I purchased the expensive and overpriced board that I did buy, was because I liked the graphic. They don't carry shoe sizes below "sasquatch" and did not offer to order the shoes in my size. It almost seemed like they didn't need the purchase that I made.
