This is a cool place! I discovered it when was in Ashland last summer. I don't think it would be a stretch to say it's the coolest place in town. The atmosphere is really sweet, set in an old bar. There are book shelves overflowing with books that you are welcome to read in the comfortable furniture and if you fall in love with a book you can take it home.
Their coffee is very good. The roasts are rotated daily and are fair trade. The espresso was a medium to dark roast but smooth and a tad nutty tasting. The Coldpress w/soy was the best. The food is great.
The baresta was very cool was down to earth and had a good brasp on the coffee. The music is also good, I think Elliot Smith was being played.

I used to think this place was the shit! growing up, going to Floydian Slip shows at a "unique" little coffee shop.. Now I recently stopped back...Wow, not that impressed anymore. My cappuccino wasn't as dry as I had asked for it, but it didn't seem to matter to the barista.
The whole vibe of this place is unique for Ashland, which is nice. Tons of college kids, and is probably one of the most trendy/laid back in Ashland, although there aren't too much to compare it to!
Dropped in while in Ashland for a cup; good coffee and a nice laid back vibe here.
Stopping at the Black Cat is required whenever I am in Ashland. A great atmosphere, coffee, and food.
Thanks again Yelp -- stopped here driving between Marquette and Duluth, wouldn't have seen it 2 blocks off the main road. Definitely seems like a cool place. Food looked really good but we didn't have time to stop. Coffee was fine, and I always prefer places that use fair trade in their espresso drinks. There's an appropriately-aligned grocery next door.
