Oh noes! I'm so sorry BB is closing.
I danced many nights away here back in '02 and '03. There was always a nice mix of dominicans, puerto ricans, hipsters, and once in a while a hasid would grace your presence. All of us doing shots and getting wasted. Anyone and everyone was on the dance floor and the Saturday night DJ was amazing.
Sigh. Even though I haven't been in years, I'm going to miss you BB. You were an institution.

Wahhhhh.
I just moved here and they're closing the joint? Sultry gypsy atmosphere, diverse crowd (read: people of color / folks over 30 ) plus curvalicious girls who can actually find the beat.
It took every ounce of self-restraint not to Shazam each song that came on (a mix of beat box-y and piano-y funk that had me craving Biz Markie with my coffee this morning.)
Can only surmise that yesterday's party was uncharacteristically hot...otherwise, how could a place this good go bad? -

Just got back from Black Betty 10 minutes ago, stuffed to the brim with lamb burger and drunk on Reverend Vince Anderson's crazy love preaching. It honestly is a good night to be alive.
Update: Okay I think there needs to be more info here. Try the hummus, its absolutely delicious, salty creamy fragrant goodness, served with the softest pita. They have a $4 column, and a $5 column of such plates, and you can do 2 from each column for $15, or 3 from each column for $21..which is a damn good deal for 6 plates of food, recommended by the waitress for only if you are "really really hungry, for 2 people."
Its hard to find a place with such decent live music and bar, and food, without one compromising for the other. Oh the hummus... -
Review from Joi B.
I've been coming to Black Betty for about 10 or so years now. A true neighborhood staple, when you have all kinds of comings and goings in the area, not to mention shitty trends, ten thousand mediocre Thai & those annoying "home cookin'" places that cater to hipsters who, let's face it, probably don't eat, but have been known to scarf down a plate of fried chicken or, worse yet, Frito Pie, from time to time. BLARGH to all of that.
Black Betty has a lovely atmosphere, my favorite bathroom, ever, possibly, a well-stocked bar with interesting cocktails (THE FEZ!!!) and a good wine list, and tasty Mediterranean fare. I LOVE the Moroccan rice & beans, truly the heartiest thing you could ask for on a freezing cold winter night.
I've had better hummus, falafel and babaganoush, for sure, and their Mediterranean Platter for $9 seems rather overpriced (my flat bread was tasteless and cold).
Service can be spotty, but is not terrible. The waitresses are at least always very nice, even if there is a fuck up in the kitchen.
Lovely outdoor space, comfy and warm indoor space.
One caveat: avoid this place like the plague on Sunday nights unless you like Brazilian music and don't mind being shoved out by tons of whiny idiots looking to be all like Bosa Nova and shit, begging for your table because it's their "special occasion." People tend to show up early for dinner, the place gets packed and you may never get served. Then the beats start happenin' and people like me have no business being in there. -

For drinks and a little dancing, Black Betty has a great atmosphere, particularly on Sunday nights when they have Brazilian night.
I can't technically salsa dance but I can fake it real well, especially after a few cocktails.
I haven't eaten here, so no comment on the food. But the drinks, thumbs up! The crowd (of beautiful people) is good too, very relaxed, not obnoxious at all. Good spot in the neighborhood. Always a good time.

Sucks so bad that this place closed...even if it was falling off a bit. So many good times.Listed in: Hangin' in Brooklyn, yo., RIP

Old Bridge, NJ
I think one of the best things about NYC is that every type of cuisine is represented. I had never eaten Middle Eastern/Moroccan food before, so I definitely was up for trying that type of cuisine. Since I had planned on meeting a good friend in Williamsburg, Black Betty was the obvious restaurant to visit. We got there at around 6:30, and were promptly seated. Although the dining space is quite small, since it was the early evening, there were only two other people dining.
I like the way the interior is decorated. I think the blue and yellow colored walls combined with the candles that line the space helps effectuate a subdued atmosphere.
While the menu does have some interesting options, it certainly isn't an extensive list. With that being written, we ordered the sauteed spinach and lamb samboosak. While the portions for the appetizers are quite small, they were delicious. Obviously, I've had spinach many times, and it was one of the best spinach dishes I've had in a while. And, the topping on the lamb samboosak was quite flavorful. As for my entree, I ordered the falafel platter, which consists of falafels, flat bread, hummus, babaganouj, feta, olives and taboulleh with tahini dressing. The entree was filling and flavorful. I definitely enjoyed my entree. And, for dessert, we split the chocolate mousse, which was quite good.
Overall, we definitely enjoyed our first visit to Black Betty. The atmosphere was subdued, the service was okay and the food was tasty. I do recommend going here for recession-friendly and nicely prepared Middle-Eastern/Moroccan food. -

brilliant spot! the best middle-eastern inspired fare I've had, well that i can remember. The hummous and babaganoush are ridiculously deliscious and fresh. I want to take buckets of them home and eat them by the handfull. ok, that's gross.
Other than that the salads are superb, the chicken tagine is fragrant and different, everything there is just so fresh. yumm!
good drinks too!! quite! and good music. -

Some of the tastiest food I have had in New York on my trip.
I decided to hit up Black Betty before the Cut n' Paste competition last night. I am happy I went here since the food was solid. It would definitely be a good date place despite the setting not being too intimate. Of course, I would come here for the food. I wish I had a few friends with me so I could sample the other dishes they have.
The merguez sausage was a bit bland but the dijon mustard sauce was a nice compliment. The killer here was the falafel platter. Most places offer falafel as a mezze and the entree is usually never enough. I actually had to force some falafel down my throat since I didn't want to leave any on the plate and commit such a travesty. The falafel wasn't as fried and crunchy as I usually like it but it still hit hard. Usually falafel that isn't fried to perfection is dry and tastes horrible. Not Black Betty falafel. It was still AWESOME and hit the spot for my falafel craving.
BATHROOM REVIEW: Unfortunately the men's bathroom didn't have a lock and shared the space with a urinal. So, when you are doing your thing, people might accidentally walk in since there is no stall door. Here's to bathroom mishaps after dinner. -

While I did have a rockin good time coming here after Spuyten Duyvil up the street, I firmly attribute that to the company I was keeping (and perhaps our tipsy nature), not the venue itself.
It was ok, I guess, for what it is-- a dancy, clubby, get-yer-groove on kind of place. We did have fun... But I'm just not convinced I can warrant a rating of over 3 stars to anyplace where I am consistently grabbed and groped. . . . even if it is on the dancefloor.
It was pretty crowded on a Saturday night. Music not really my speed-- A lot of jamaican-y sounding steel drummy music-- which is fine, just not really my thing when i'm in the middle of williamsburg. (although, they did mix in some jackson 5 which i give them props for)
So yeah, despite the randoms trying to feel me up, I still managed to have a pretty great time. Yay awesome friends! -

I was here once while out in billyburg and enjoyed a few things about it. First of all, the martinis were decentish. Despite the fact that we were a 15+ person group of people who couldn't make up their mind about what we were there for (to drink? eat? stay near bar? etc), our waitress handled everything fine. I ate falafel and taboulleh, which was good and really damn good, respectively.
I would return here if I was in the neighborhood.
UPDATE: They have a Sunday night Brazilian (well, mix of styles, but) music night. nice! -

It pains me to complain about a place with good food and $3 margaritas, but the service is painful. By the time we got our plates of (admittedly delicious) hummus and feta, I didn't want to like it.
UPDATE! My roommate and my friend both got roofied here last week! (For real, not just "ugh, I made bad choices, someone must've slipped me something...") So... while not technically the venue's fault, I must say no more stars for YOU, Black Betty! -

This place was perfect for my first night in Brook-to-the-lyn (sorry). First we had dinner outside, which I believe the Italians call "alfresco" (said in snooty, Comic Book Store Guy voice). This activity, while native to most regions of the continental United States in summer, will yield you a blank stare in San Francisco, unless accompanied by heat lamps.
But I digress, onto to the food. Creamy, smooth hummus that melts in your mouth, crispy falafel goodness, and who knew calamari was so good in a salad. And tequila cosmos!! Danger Will Robinson! Not only were the edibles delectable, but when dinner was over, the DJ was packin' the dance floor with OPP, Delite, and Money Love! It was 2 am, and the night was just gettin' started. When the DJ yelled "Is Brooklyn in the house?" I waved my hands like I just didn't care. Sorry. My whiteness is showing.Listed in: My Neighbors Think I'm a…, Gotham Glory, A Brooklyn Queen

Sounds of Brazil
The long-running Sunday night Brazilian dance party at Black Betty gets some competition this weekend, from within its own Moroccan-themed walls. The Carnaval vs. Mardi Gras battle will pit the bossa nova, samba and South American 70s funk of the regular DJs against their Big Easy cajun sounds of their counterparts. Will the loser have to doff their clothes and don some beads? You're already in the neighborhood; boogie on by and see.

I had one of my more negative restaurant experiences in NYC when I came to Black Betty.
To be fair, I came to the restaurant with high expectations (after reading Yelp and also, hearing two different people passing by outside the restaurant seperately rave about it simultaneously- it was odd).
The hostess was rude and left us standing around while a perfectly good-and set table was waiting for us- for at least 4 min. The restaurant's interior was well decorated but smoke poured out of the kitchen and had us coughing at the table. Even worse, the men's room didn't have any soap (pretty gross when you think waitors etc... probably use the bathroom as well).
The food was mediocre- at best. Good hummus (but how hard is that?) Also I had the grilled calamari and it was wayyyy overcooked and burnt.
Overpriced with overrated food and TERRIBLE service, I might go for a drink but I would never recommend anyone to eat here. You've been warned. -

My favourite restaurant in the area. Ive never been disapointed.
Amazing drinks, and reliable food.
SOmetimes not the best waitstaff but its usually just fine, nice quiet garden seats in the back!

If they have the artichoke appetizer special, get it.
Everything else I've tried has been very good.
As for the bar, I've been a little disappointed in new dj's of late, but this dance floor will always have a special place in my heart. It used to be you couldn't go on a Saturday night and not hear The Message. Oh well, things change. I'm awaiting Black Betty's next Saturday night incarnation...'cause they'll get it right again. Brazilian dance party on Sunday is fun whether it's overcrowded or sparse.
But come on, don't order ten caipirinhas! I just want a beer. Give the lady a break. That sweet and lovely bartender has to mash mint constantly on Sundays and I feel for her.
The Brooklyn lager here is very nice - cleaner tap? I don't know. -

I've always loved going to Black Betty but last night required me to yelp about it. I went with my parents, grandfather, uncle, and boyfriend for some family dinner time. We ordered the red pepper hummus (my fav!), sauteed spinach, tomato and cucumber salad, and feta cheese salad (my 2nd fav!) for apps. As soon as we got these, I think my family was in love. They couldn't believe how fresh everything tasted and how delicious it all was. My father claims he doesn't like feta cheese but he absolutely loved the feta cheese here. Drinks were awesome (margs, mojitos, beers) and they have a good happy hour until 8PM every day.
We had a mixture of vegetarians and meat eaters and Black Betty has plenty of options for both at extremely reasonable prices. For entrees, we had falafel platters, the steak entree and salad, lamb burger, and the mousakka. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and had fun tasting each others. Not one complaint was made and let me say, that is a rarity in my family. All I heard was praise and yumms from everyone around the table.
We all had a great time, the service was impeccable and to top it all off, my parents said that this is now their favorite restaurant in Williamsburg. For what I consider a priceless family meal, I think Black Betty deserves even more than the 5 star max. -

Brooklyn, NY
It was...overwhelming. With many annoying folk in there. And these five girls were completely oblivious to the amount of room they were taking up, the drinks they were spilling on our shoes, and how to dance. That basically made me cranky and I left without even bothering to get a drink.
Also, there were some creepy men-folk that made me feel uneasy.
However, I hear good things about Sunday night so I'll have to check that out and come back. -

Ok, do not order the falafel plate here. well unless you like dry lifeless falafel. Ugh, to it I say. And as for the falafel sandwich, they charge $7. Seven effing dollars for a simple sandwich. Oi, my head hurts...
Now that that ugliness is out of the way, lets get to the good stuff:
Hummus - very nice and garlicy (but only one piece of flat bread??? seriously???) Black Betty you can do better than this.
Tabbouleh - ok, this is only so-so. They use couscous rather than bulger wheat, which I know is far simpler, but not nearly as tasty.
Moroccan Rice and Beans - This is the dish that keeps me going back (though not all that often, really). A simple spicy chickpea and basmati rice dish that warms both the pallet and the belly.
Chickpea and Vegetable Stew - This is a tasty dish, but anytime I have had it i wish they put in more vegetables, and a bit of heat would not hurt in the least.
The Bad:
How can they get away without having a vegetable tagine? This blows me away. I would think the neighborhood would have rioted about this already.
The service - yeah typical for Williamsburg, but damn. Is it really that hard? Do not ask if I need more water, then wait 10 minutes to give me a new bottle, which is less than 10 feet away.
The dining area is far too cramped.
Overall, with Alia now in the area, why bother with the hipper than thou attitude and less than wonderful food.
And seriously, skip the falafel. Just do not do it. -

I never imagined this place would have good food. It really looked like a bar I wanted to have drinks in though. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to have drinks here yet. After my friend got her tattoo at Tattoo Culture we were all starving and heading here since it was close by. My friends had already eaten here before and said the food was good.
Almost everyone ordered the falafel plate and so did I. I like it a lot! A large dish that should be shared with two people. You get a variety of hummus, olives, cheese, salad, and flat bread. It all tasted good but honestly the falafel could have been more crispy and hot. The price kind of sucks, I think $9 is a bit much.
I can't wait to come here for drinks.

Brooklyn, NY
The worst delivery service I have ever had.
I have lived in Black Betty's general vicinity for five years, and have never managed a trip there, so my review is based singularly on my experience with them delivering food.
We called, and the girl who always answered would spend near 5 minutes yelling back and forth with the kitchen staff before telling us, yes, they would in fact deliver to us. The food was great, almost all of the times we ordered, prior to the apartment ban on food from Black Betty. Sometimes we would have to wait a little over an hour for food. Sometimes the food would come leaked out of its packaging. We forgave a lot of errors, based on the general consistency of the food.
Then the ban.
This came about after one evening which it took them 3 hours to deliver!!
When we called to see what happened, a rude girl answered the phone again, yelled to people, and then we would "happen to get disconnected." When we would call back we would get their answering machine. Come on!
Three hours later, the food comes, giant hair in the otherwise typically delicious skirt steak salad, we call, she tells us we will have a credit for the next time we order. We decide to never order again.
A few weeks later, we are dirt poor, and we need to eat. Remembering our said credit we call to order. No surprise, we get the same girl, and the credit has since "disappeared."
We enjoyed many a good meal from Black Betty, but never again. -

ok, to be honest, this is a 3 1/2 star place..
Every time I've been in here, it's been completely different..food, service, music..so consider yourself warned!
I fully agree with the guy who called Black Betty a "neighborhood maker". Back when williamsburg was more 'hood than neighborhood, Black Betty was there, doing her thang.
To sum up? Music's loud, men are sexy, and the fried chickpea things at the bar are fantabulous! -

Fantastic drinks, super nice staff, amazing food, great atmosphere, reasonable prices, it doesn't get much better than this.
The salmon salad - the fish is chargrilled and so tasty - the hummos is unusual and excellent, the mojito specials always put a smile on my face, and on a nice night, the outdoor patio is perfect.
This place is a neighborhood-maker. -

I usually don't like places with dance floors. I know its silly to go there knowing that I won't like there because dance floors are places for people who like dancing. I guess I am too shy or something to feel comfortbale dancing in front of people who I don't really know.
I am giving this place 4 stars because of the location, people who hangs there, and of course the music. Something about the people there was very pleasant for me. I felt much more comfortable than going to one of those sleezy clubs in the city where people just start grabbing you and all.
I don't know if I would become a regular, but I felt some kind of warm vibes from the place which would make me say that I would come back sometime in the future again. -

Black Betty is bodacious and I should know; I eat and play live music there every Monday. Last night I had the moussaka for the first time, which was slamming -- baked eggplant stuffed with spinach and feta and a yummy salad. I chose to eat at the bar so I could chat with the beautiful celebrity bartender, Moist Gina, who takes time out from being the bass player of Moisturizer on Mondays; I could have eaten my choice from the extensive Moroccan menu under the stars in the Black Betty garden or in the separate and very civilized intimate restaurant. The live music of Reverend Vince Anderson kicked off at 11pm, featuring me on bari sax. It's the same every Monday; meanwhile Black Betty has something different to offer every night of the week. For the drinkers, I recommend the Black Betty Margarita, made of fine tequila and anti-oxidizing pomegranite juice!

This place had the perfect level of busyness, and it was a Monday night! Of course we were all there to see Reverend Vince Anderson, and hear some "dirty gospel." The music was fantastic, the drinks were flowing, the crowd was friendly... unfortunately my friends wanted to move along so they could talk more, I was disappointed! But after an hour at Black Betty, even on a Monday night, I found myself boozed up enough that I really can't tell you where we went next!

Having been towards the top of the "list" (my boyfriend and I have a neverending list of places/things/events/happenings to experience in New York that we keep adding to almost daily) for a long time now, I was so excited to finally be trying out black betty. We headed in last night, on a particularly dreary rainy Sunday evening, and immediately took to the decor and atmosphere. Unfortunately the server did not take to us - we stood there for a good 5 minutes (the restaurant was not busy) while she chatted away with some friends/customers, and finally looked up to say, "you can sit wherever." i was somewhat put off by the initial encounter, but tried to overlook it being that it was a slow sunday night. we perused the menu, and about 5 minutes later our server finally took our drink order. 5 minutes later, drinks came. you're starting to see a pattern, no? appetizers took forever - we ordered the spinach samboosak (tasty and delicious) and the curried potatoes, which were most definitely undercooked. potatoes are not vegetables that really work when they're undercooked....after a seemingly inordinate amount of time, our meals came. I had the falafel plate, which despite my surliness about my experience thus far, i absolutely loved. I couldn't stop moaning with delight - seriously. the flatbread was perfect, the babaganouj some of the best i've had, the falafel w/tahini, heaven...I cannot say enough about this spread. My boyfriend had the skirt steak salad with pomegranate mustard dressing. slightly uninspiring; the steak had little to no seasoning, which was disappointing. He also had the chickpea stew, which was served with a mountain of couscous. The stew was okay, slightly salty and there were no chickpeas (which confused me). I guess the method is spooning the stew over the couscous, but we didn't realize that and so made the mistake of dumping the couscous into the stew, making a really unpleasant oatmeal-looking concoction. honest mistake i guess, maybe we're slow - but it would have been nice if our server suggested this. we ate and finished, and then waited (along with the table next to us) for our check for another good 5 minutes. we dropped our credit cards, and proceeded to wait about 10 minutes for it to return. annoying.
I think i'll definitely do take-out, specifically the falafel platter, but i won't be rushing back unless the service significantly improves.Listed in: lets go out to eat.

Black Betty is simply great. I love the atmosphere and location (corner bars always get 2 extra points) and I absolutely love the music. I went on a lazy Sunday and there was a lot of Brazilian music, which was great. My only fear was getting kicked in the face while a few people bogarted the dance floor to do Capoiera. Other than that, it was a really nice time and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants a fun, intimate time in Brooklyn.

Everytime I go here I have to sing, "Black Betty, damn, Black Betty". Okay, so I don't know the words, but that's not what matters. What matters is that this is by far my favorite restaurant in the hood and in NYC as a whole. Great atmosphere for dates or just eating out with the gals. Their Grilled Salmon Salad is to die for! Love it! I really can't stray from that, but I've sampled my friends' entrees and they're all amazing. They also have a quaint garden for summertime enjoyment. Service is always on point as is their food and drinks. I highly recommend this for dining out in Williamsburg!

My friend Ashley introduced me to this place last summer. You could walk right by and not even think of going in... but it's one of the best things you could do! The food is fantastic, service with a smile, and a funky atmosphere to boot. Great for small groups- I would call ahead if you plan on having more than 4 people. When it's warm outside ask to sit in the garden- you have to walk through the kitchen to get to it!

I've eaten at Black Betty a bunch of times and have rarely been less than happy with what I ordered. I end up getting the North African paella quite a bit and it's a substantial dinner. The couscous is a nice switch from rice and the seafood and chicken always taste just right. They have a great selection of appetizers and you can get away without breaking the wallet, but it's not cheap. The wait staff was always been pleasant and the atmosphere is perfectly comfortable in its run-down Brooklyn purity.
