BF and I stopped in here for dinner, and we had such a good time that we decided this was our Valentine's Day dinner (ten days too early but whatever).

What can be better than a dimly-lit intimate atmosphere, a glass of wine and sharing foie gras on homemade brioche with the person you love?  I don't know, but it was a pretty damn good experience.  We moved on to the crispy veal sweetbreads, which came with the most delicious mushrooms ever.  The desserts all sounded lovely, but we were pretty stuffed despite the smallish portion sizes.

Great place to be!  I loved it.

While visiting my parents this weekend, I had dinner with a colleague in town from San Francisco. She wanted to return, after dining at BB two evenings before.  I understand why.
What a great addition to my hometown's restaurant scene. Perfect lighting and noise level. Attentive and eager-to-please service. Impressive sommelier.
Lots of fine and interesting restaurants offer the above. The food sets Bistro Bobette apart.
Our starts: escargots, roasted beet salad, sauteed mushrooms and spiced pecans. Entrees: Tenderloin medallions and roasted monkfish accompanied by the best polenta I've ever experienced and distinctive and incredible chickpea fritters.
I have celiac disease and the server and chef were extremely accommodating, answering multiple necessary questions and creating alternatives that would be safe for me.
I remarked to my friend and Wendi, one of the owners, that the meal was reminiscent of Eleven Madison Park in Manhattan. This would be a restaurant I would frequent, if living in Richmond. Perfect for a romantic dinner (quite a few couples there the evening we dined), a business dinner....frankly, any kind of dinner.
This is a special place in wonderful Shockoe Slip,  with $4 parking right around the corner on 12th. I'll be back, with my husband in tow.

Most of the restaurants I've been to here in Richmond offer food that is so-so or pretty good.  RARELY does everyone at the table love everything that they order.  However, we loved everything we ordered (there were four of us).  We had everything from beef to fish, truffle mac and cheese, asparagus, ginger soup, creme brulee (best I've ever had).  Even the waitress was FROM FRANCE.  Pretty awesome.  All of the food was A++.

The atmosphere was very cool.  Dimly lit and modern art adorned the walls.  High ceilings.  Lots of people at the back bar.

There were a couple of little annoyances, however.  We got sat right by the front door and when people went in and out, they would hold the door open and cold air came rushing in.  So we were frozen most of the time.  They have these little cheap looking plastic curtains to try to keep out the elements, but they didn't work.  In NYC, many restaurants with similar layouts have HEAVY curtains that cover the door completely.  Make sure you ask for a table away from the door.

Also, on a Friday night, they were out of two of the bottles of wine that we wanted.  We settled for third place.

All in all, we will definitely come again.  But they DO need to fix that curtain situation ASAP (are you listening BB?).

Listen, I know a 2 Star review seems bad, but it was my birthday, and I had food poisoning after my mussel lunch.

I don't know why I always order mussels. It infuriates my boyfriend, and astounds me because it is so hit and miss. Especially with the mussels at Bouchon on my birthday. They were BAD. And I don't just mean, weren't delicious, but I could tell that they were mealy, and clearly not to be eaten. After eating 5 or so, and determining, "okay margaret, just stop, just cuz they are expensive, and you've been wanting to come here for a long time, and it's your birthday doesn't mean they aren't shitty". So I stopped, and still felt like shit the rest of the day. I mean, they had this weird cheese on them... ugh, it was terrible.

My boyfriend had Veal Kidney with a great polenta, but our server had dictated the specials to us in a way that made him think he was getting something in addition to just veal kidneys in a pile on polenta. Don't get me wrong, his dish, was delicious.

Overall, I'm sure the food here is much better than my experience, but for me, the food sucked, and the service was not knowledgeable about their product.

    :(

    Good Luck!

My friend and I had dinner here last night so I wanted to update my review post name change. The verdict it, it's good!

Here's what I liked: first off, the menu featured a nice, inventive selection. I was torn about what to order...until I heard the specials. I got the special oxtail wonton soup and a special ribeye topped with bone marrow and bordelaise sauce. Both were fantastic. The oxtail soup was super umami, salty and really good. This was only the first or second time I've tried oxtail, and it was delish. The ribeye was also really good, a little too marbeled with fat maybe, but perfectly cooked to medium rare and the bone marrow was like another layer of buttery goodness. I chose Brussels sprouts for my side, which were also buttery, salty good. The bread was crusty, chewy, yummy. For dessert we split blood orange sorbet, which was a perfect finish. It was packed with bright flavor, making it a perfect, light way to end the meal.

For drinks, I started with a Bobette cocktail, which was a bit sweet, but tasty. My friend got the "petit kir royale," which sure was petite. It was a tiny glass for $12. I would probably not get that again. I got a malbec with my meal, which was okay. I wish they'd get a bigger by-the-glass list because they have a really impressive bottle list.

Service was pretty attentive. We didn't have a reservation, but walked right in and got a table, which was nice. The meal didn't end up being cheap, about $75 with all our courses, but it was good. I'll probably go back for a special occasion!

We ate here for Thanksgiving, and as the menu was limited, 3 stars seems fair.  After the next visit I'll re-evaluate.

There was a fixed menu for Thanksgiving, and I had a wonderful oyster chowder followed by a main course of venison.  Both were delicious.  The pumpkin tart for dessert was uninspired, but the bourbon ice cream made up for anything it may have lacked.  An excellent, if somewhat limited wine list, but marked up rather higher than normal.  $108 for a half bottle of  Château Branaire Ducru 2005?  You've got to be kidding me.

The service was excellent, with a very personable and friendly waiter who did not hover.  The place is very small, so conversation has to be something you don't mind being overheard.

This is the new "it" place, where Pomengranate used to be in Shockoe Slip. The food is good, and obviously from reading everyone else's reviews, the attitude is very French: eat what we give you and don't complain.

Weird though, as Wendy doesn't sound like a French name. I thought service was so-so...reminded me of the old Verbena...sometimes you get good service, sometimes not so much and if they run out of stuff, you get a Gallic shrug.

Go for the $50 prix fixe ...it's the best deal or better yet, if you want good food  and a nice wine list, go to Cafe Rustica or the new LeMaire.

This is one of my favorite places to go in Richmond. My boyfriend and I have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered. Our favorite items on the menu are the truffle mac & cheese and foie gras. The owners are extremely welcoming and Olivier at the bar is great at suggesting new wines to try. Excellent place for a date!

    A quick summary review:

Food: 4 stars.  Generally good.  Nothing wowed.
Service: 2.5 stars.  Very slow.  Too pretentious.
Atmosphere: 4.5 stars.  It's a nice, comfortable place with interesting decor.
Wine.  I only tried one glass of chardonnay.  It tasted flat and dull.  Hard to judge a place on one glass of wine though.

The experience at Bistro Bouchon was unique. I mean, what can top off a dinner but a good 40-minute ride home rehashing the service lapses and treatment by management? The restaurant received top reviews from the local newspaper food critic, Dana Craig. We were all set to be wowed by the cuisine and service. As she stated in her published review "...the moment Wendy Kalif greeted us with genuinely bubbly excitement,  we knew we were in for comfortable indulgence." We got the Wendy Kalif alter-ego.

As the party was being seated, one of us asked if the table was amenable for the dining experience. We were concerned about our elder parents being in the draft of the front door.  Ms. Kalif retorted that "you don't have a choice." Ah. Game on. Although during our meal we did view another 4 person table that stayed unoccupied throughout our meal.

The evening began well enough, with cocktails all around. I chose the Bordeaux by the glass ($10) which stated it was a merlot. It was an easy drink, but had little character. My parents decided to go for the "date night" special of a three-course meal with a bottle of wine for $50. That's a pretty good deal! They both got the carrot soup and the roast lamb steak (although it was not called a steak, we were told it was part of the thigh). As I was not interested in the specials menu, I opted for the roasted monkfish ($24) with the shaved fennel salad (oops forgot--maybe $8) The salad was properly dressed, but could have used more acid in the mixture. The fennel was decidedly non-fennel-y. My date opted for the beef stew with the macaroni and cheese ($24).

When she decided to order a glass of wine with her entrée, I explained she might like to have another selection besides the Bordeaux, since I didn't think it would stand up to beef stew. That's when the waitress told me that she had switched wines on me because they ran out. But shortly thereafter found another bottle behind the bar. (So what was I being served--and charged for--dead stock?) She did opt for another glass of a provençal ($13) which was quite good and had a much better feel and finish.

My  parents' wine hadn't arrived, and when their entrees were placed, my date remarked that they should have a bottle coming. The waitress apologized and brought the wine forthwith, however it was still not a good move to have two people consume five glasses of wine at the commencement of the main course.

My mom's lamb was well-cooked and flavorful. But my father's was gristly and inedible. The waitress did her duty in asking about the meal, and he remarked that the lamb was not fit. She was swift in her actions to get him a replacement, and he chose a filet mignon, since he felt it was the quickest item to prepare. She brought him some bread in the interim, but took his fork and knife, so it was hard for him to snack on some of our entrees in the mean time.

The entrée arrived shortly, and it came as tournedos, not as a filet, as other diners had received.
The desserts were comme-ci, comme-ça. The profiteroles turned out to be an Americanized enlarged profiterole (singular). The Chocolat Marquis was a strip of tasty, yet unremarkable chocolate with some stale merangue cookies on the flank. The crème brulee was serviceable but ordinary. The star of the dessert arena was the Tarte Tatin.

The real kicker and the star of the entire evening was the bill. We weren't sure how they calculated the "date-night" special, ala replacement entree, and the waitress was clearly uncomfortable explaining it to us. We asked for the manager, and about five minutes later, the waitress returned looking uncomfortable.. We reiterated the request to see the manager. And we got it. In all its New-York-City-clipped-speech and rapid-fire verbiage.

This was a woman who had clearly made up her mind to charge an extra $19 for the upgrade from lamb to beef filet on the special. Yes, we had calculated the number of people coming and going, stood by the front door, and waited for our turn to order--knowing--KNOWING--we would be served nuture de chien. She verbally harangued us regarding the extra charge, even in the face of the wine faux-pas. After that, she retired to the back bar to consult about the charges. As I could see in the mirror, she was animatedly talking with the chef, who was dining and could not have given a damn if his restaurant was on fire. They ended up presenting the same bill. Before we paid and left we viewed the owner in the mirror talking to others at the bar, feeling that it was about us and her justifying her actions.  Au voir.

You may choose to visit the restaurant, however tread carefully.  If you even hint of something not to your liking in this case the customer is not always right.  If she snaps at you upon entry, quittez!

Ate here with about 6 or 7 people. First off the service was topnotch. We had a late reservations and were the last to leave, and we kept ordering drinks so we were definitely annoying. But they kept offering us desert, coffee, more drinks, etc so that was a big plus.

The cheese plate was awesome selection of stuff..but not enough bread came out with it.

Lots of good options. I got the artic char in saffron sauce, which was delicious, but was a little light on the portion side. Thankfully the truffle mac and cheese made up for it. If you go and don't get the truffle mac and cheese you are missing out.

I got to try the lamb, muscles, and escargot. All good. The lamb was the best.

I would go back, but cant afford to anytime soon. Nice environment and super friendly owners.

I'm not a serious consumer of French cuisine and had slight apprehensions about dining at Bouchon. I can be fairly adventurous when it comes to trying new things but dishes like sweetbreads and foie gras usually had me choosing other types of restaurants when going out. I'm glad I got over that when deciding to go to Bouchon with my wife and some friends of ours this past Friday night.

Our reservation was for 7:30 which was a perfect time as the restaurant was just starting to fill up. The atmosphere was definitely high-end, with white tablecloths, soft lighting, interesting artwork and well-dressed waiters. However, it wasn't intimidating and far from pretentious.

There were a lot of specials on offer that evening, and I decided to start with the shrimp and crab soup. My wife had the caramelized onion tart with roasted red peppers and goat cheese. Both appetizers were delicious and well-presented. The soup was rich and creamy and had plentiful chunks of crab. The tart's three main ingredients were a perfect combination of flavors.

I want to add that there was a considerable wait time between courses, but we didn't mind at all as we were enjoying our beverages, the atmosphere and our conversation. When the mains came out, I was delighted to see the daily special of sausage stuffed quail had two birds (some places only give you one) served on a plentiful bed of creamy cheese polenta. My wife's roasted monkfish with vegetable cous cous looked delicious as well. The polenta went over so well with everyone at the table that we ordered a side of it for everyone to share.

We were tempted by the desserts and ordered one for each of us; the creme brulee however wasn't anything special. It lacked any sort of berry accompaniment and was a rather small portion compared to most others I have had. The other desserts fared much better - the chocolate mousse was rich and satisfying and the chocolate pate equally so.

We really enjoyed our visit to Bouchon and will definitely be back. I'd consider it as more of a special occasion place due to the higher prices, but the food and experience do not disappoint. I have a new respect for French cuisine too, thanks for opening my eyes Bouchon!

Welcome to the neighborhood, Bouchon! This is the place that I have been looking for, the food is exquisite, the surroundings casual but elegant and the staff friendly and attentive without imposing.

Between the two of us we had the duck terrine, the lamb tenderloin, the veal hanging tender, the sauteed spinach with pine nuts accompanied by a wonderful Château de Pez Saint-Estèphe. The only question may have been the flageolet beans with the lamb but, beyond that everything was perfect.

Our hats off to Wendy, Olivier and Sydney for a truly memorable evening. We will be back.

We dined here the night before Thanksgiving. It was quiet and we loved that! The mussels (which weren't on the menu, but when I asked, the chef happily fixed them) were deliciously prepared with plently of freshly made bread to dipping. The arugula salad was crisp & nicely flavored. Hubby had the fois gras, which was delicously prepared and then the special venison stew, a tasty treat on a cold winter evening. All in all, we were enchanted & would happily return on our next visit to Richmond.

My bf and I had our Thanksgiving dinner here, and it was just an average experience. Nothing extraordinary or surprise.

We had the prefix menu. The butternut squash soup and pear goat cheese pomegranate salad were good. For entree we had turkey breast and lamb--both were just ok. My desserts was nothing special-- a normal pumpkin pie that you can find in any decent restaurant. My bf ordered a chocolate cake (sorry forgot the name). It was somehow special, had several layers, but just not that amazing in taste.

Maybe if you go on the other night, the regular menu would be different. But according to our experience, I can only give it 3 stars.

Went to dinner on a week night.Thursday come to think of it .It was bird or game bird night . I had wood pigeon and it was delicious. There is a point to that ramble. This place has a creative menu and the execution is generally solid. There were some misteps. We were given a small piece of bread. The  quality was high but the bread was noticeably , visibly burned. For  dessert we had creme brulee.Too cold and low cream flavor profile. My wife had trout and loved it.The place had an interesting wine list with non outrageous prices.Had a good chinon which you don't see routinely .The service was quite good. Not perfect but we really enjoyed it and the location in the Schokoe Slip main drag is perfect.

Richmond take note! This is the place to beat in my eyes.  Superb food with enough tradition to please the most discerning and intelligent creativity for the most cosmopolitan.  Interesting cuts of meats, fresh ingredients, and a wonderful chief, actually in the kitchen cooking!  With owners on site, all the time, you can expect great service and attention to detail.  An inviting yet chic, modern decor caps the aesthetic.  To finish is my favorite part: the wine.  Bravo!  I have tried to get some of their bottles in wine shops in Richmond with no avail.  Prices are very fair.  Which brings me to my only complaint, why is there no wine list on the website?  I understand restaurants of this style are constantly circulating wine but maybe just some highlights to tease us?

Wonderful meal last night at Bouchon.  The food was excellent.  I was one of a party of eight and everyone at my table raved about their meals.  There were two vegetarians in my party which appreciated the vegetarian option on the menu.  The staff was knowledgeable and gave good recommendations on the food and wine.   My husband had the lamb with flageolet beans mentioned in a previous post, which he said was very good.

This was my first trip to Bouchon but another person in my party has been there for lunch and gave it high reviews.  Let's spread the word Richmond and help this new gem of a restaurant prosper!

Visited Bouchon with a group of 7 for lunch today. Overall, a great experience. We showed up right as they seemed to be closing up shop for the afternoon, but they seated us happily. Service was helpful and attentive, and the owner or manager also stopped by to chat at the end of the meal.

Out of the seven of us, two of us got the sirloin bernaise, four the mushroom tartine, and one the calf's liver. Most of us also got the truffled mac & cheese as a side. Everyone loved the mushroom tartine, and the calf's liver seemed to go over well too. The two of us who got the sirloin were a little disappointed. They cooked the meat to perfection for each of us (we ordered different degrees of done-ness), but the actual piece of meat was not fantastic for either of us. Mine was unfortunately far more gristle-y than I would expect in a fairly small piece of meat. Further, I think the meat would have been better without being smothered in the bernaise sauce - it almost seemed like they were trying to hide it. However, the truffled mac & cheese was delicious - defintiely a crowd-pleaser, very creamy.

Lunch ran everyone between $13-$20, tax and tip included. Definitely a good dining experience overall. I would be happy to go back and would just avoid steaks next time!

My partner and I booked a table at this establishment through OpenTable last night. We're both fans of French cuisine, and really tend to seek restaurants that provide good food for value, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared well. After reading some of the positive reviews and articles about this new establishment, it sounded right up our alley.

Though we booked a table for 7PM, we managed to arrive almost an hour early, before our table was ready. No worries, we decided to have a couple of drinks at the bar. The bartender was fantastic. Bouchon has some very interesting drinks on the menu, and if you tell the bartender about your taste in drinks, he'll make something wonderful for you even if it's not on the drink menu. In my case, this involved a martini based on the wonderful fruit from Asia called Lychee. It was delicious. We met some interesting folks at the bar, and before dinner made some new friends (including Wendy, one of the owners who attentively tended to the customers as well).

The real treat was when we sat down for our meal. My partner enjoyed the Escargots while I sampled the Fois Gras as an appetizer. Both were prepared perfectly, on par with the finest bistros. I sampled the fresh Escarole soup as a mid course. For our mains, my partner enjoyed the seared scallops and I ordered the pepper-crusted fillet with an amazing reduction. We both shared sides of the Potato Gratin and the truffle mac and cheese. We finished the evening with two wonderful desserts and coffee.

Overall, this was one of the finest meals I've had in Richmond thus far. The food, FAR from pretentious was well-prepared, simple, and very very fresh. Bouchon will now become one of our few favorite Richmond eateries, both for the wonderful food, the great staff, and the beautiful environment Wendy and Francis have created.

I had a very nice first dining experience last night at Bouchon in Richmond's Shockoe Slip. The attractive restaurant was fairly busy and had a nice energy to it.

My wife and I started with the Charcuterie & Cheese plate which offered a plentiful and delicious choice of meats and cheeses. There was enough to share some with our guests who enjoyed the Mushroom soup starter and Escargots.

Two of the guests had the obvioulsy rich Beef Stew served centered with truffled macaroni and cheese. They cleaned their plates. Another guest raved over her Filet. I Had's the Monkfish over wheat berry risotto. The fish was a bit overcooked, but edible. The waiter asked about our meal, I shared this with him and he appropriately apoligized and said he would report it to the kitchen.

Our waiter was very attentive and helpful with our wine selections. The deserts were OK, but maybe not up to the standard set by the previous courses. I would add they offerred a large, varied desert selection.

We had a very nice conversation with Wendy, our host and owner who made us feel welcome.

I would recommend Bouchon to others and will return.

I love this place. I have eaten here several times. I highly recommend it.

The food is fantastic. The service is excellent and the staff are extremely pleasant and helpful. They went out of their way to make ingredient adjustments to my order in order to accommodate my food allergies.

I am looking forward to my next meal there.

The food was wonderful.  They had foie gras that was excellent.  We had the Saffron & Pea Risotto (contained large shrip, little clams, and an very tasty chorizo sausage.)  and Lamb tenderlion that was tender with great flavor throughout.  Only drawback is the service is similar to Europe (SLOW).  Very extensive wine list, most by the bottle.  Although your stomachs will be full and happy, your wallet will be much lighter!!  Dinner for two, (2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine) = $169 with (18% tip).  Recommend reservations.  They do have a early bird 5-6pm Prix Fixe for the more cost conscious foodies.  Bon appetit.

Had lunch on Thursday. Food was superb. Service is indifferent--never got the second glass of wine i asked for when entree was delivered, and had no opportunity to flag anyone down before desert menu arrived. However, we certainly will return, forewarned.

Classic French menu using high-quality ingredients.  I've been 3 times now and Bouchon has been very consistent.  The staff is friendly and efficient.  The chef-owner is friendly and welcoming.  The kitchen does fish very well -- definitely try the specials.  Great for lunch, too.

I just called to make a reservation on a weekend evening at 7PM for ten people. This reservation is for 6 weeks from now. I was told no and that the service and the food suffers when they need to serve 10 people at a time. I appreciate the honesty but must admit to be a bit surprised. I've never heard that before. Oh well..we will just find someplace else.
