I love this place.
Since my company moved here in June, I get my coffee here every morning.
The coffee is good, the muffins are great (they always warm them up, which makes them even better) and the biscottis are delicious. I have never liked biscottis before. They've never been my thing. But not only will I eat these ones, I actually enjoy them.
All the employees are super nice to me, as they are to most people. The owner is there every morning cooking, or preparing peoples' coffee. In times where the owners of most coffee places are sitting on a beach, clubbing imported seals, or whatever the owners of Starbucks do in their free time, it's nice to have a good ol' locally owned joint.
Support local business, and buy Bis.Co!
Very nice little bakery and very reasonably priced. Their biscotti (cantuccini, in Italian!) are very good and tasty.
Darling little biscotti and coffee shop in Hell's Kitchen. I would absolutely recommend stopping by for a bowl of coffee and a sampler plate of delicious biscotti. The shop is bright and lovely, and the biscotti are absolutely delicious!! We had the owner pick a selection for us (guiding her that we LOVE chocolate) and tried flavors including goobers (chocolate, peanut), chocolate walnut, pistachio and chocolate chips, etc. The owner was super sweet, even throwing in an extra couple of biscotti for us to sample - I can't believe the review below that calls her rude - all I can say is we are only human and all have off days. She treated us lovely, and I can't wait to go back on my next visit to NY!
It continues to amaze me how people take simple ideas and add their own spunk and twist to it, and Bis.Co.Latte is pure genious!!! My only complaint is the walk I have to make from Times Square, but enough about my lazy butt. Let's dish on the biscotti:
Biscotti for under a buck is a huge DEAL in NYC!! Especially when they are fresh and come in a variety of flavors. I counted on Wholefood's but they lacked the rich flavor and "bite" that I remember from the biscotti I had in Italy. I loved the Chunky Chocolate Espresso Almond, slightly bitter and a perfect combination of sweetness- it is AMAZING with a cup of hot coffee!! Lemon poppyseed is a great alternative that goes well with herbal teas and be sure to try the eccentric flavors including the Sambuca and Marsala Wine biscotti. It sounds weird, but if I remember correctly, in Italy, they loved dipping biscotti with sweet dessert wine. Ahh.. molto bene!!!!
The owner of this place is a total nightmare-she's crazy and verbally abusive -words cannot describe how messed up this place is-ooh what a cute cafe run but a complete lunatic! Stay away-it's biscotti-it's not gonna change your life. She has all these rules and gets in fights with people-a miserable, self loathing loser who runs a chaotic establishment...good luck honey, cuz you're on 10th ave and with the reputation you're getting in this neighborhood, you don't deserve anything! Enough said!
Their biscotti is good. Coffee drinks are not bad. I haven't tried the food there and will never get to.
This place and I had a potential. I work around there. This is a perfect spot for me to get my daily cup of coffee but the owner is very rude and flat out yells at you if you don't go by her rules. In this store the owner is the king and customers mean nothing.. so I choose to walk extra 3-4 blocks to a dunkin donuts or starbucks. Trust me, I'm all for supporting small mom and pop shops and I think there should be more of them. But the last thing I need with my 3PM coffee is someone's unnecessary attitude. After about 4 visits, I gave up. I will never return.
I don't come here because of the scenery outside (hardware stores and dry cleaners) or the tempermental rules (once in the summer, I had to drink my illy coffee on the bench outside the door with biscotti on my lap because I forgot to tell them to serve it in a ceramic-for-here cup/saucer).
The cafe is decidedly the manifestation of the owner's own eccentricities. They have a ridiculous selection of biscotti -- I have regularly left with an entire pound of black and tans. The reading selection runs the gamut including issues of Slate magazine and a TimeOut guide to film. The cappucino comes in a giant bowl. You can easily eat your fill of pumpkin scone samplings at the counter. And this is why I keep coming back.
It reminds me why I like New York sometimes -- the only kind of place this sort of establishment could thrive in.
About 25 steps from my apartment, Bis Co is a weekend staple from me. It's a great neighborhood spot with good, homemade food. I'm not a coffee snob but I love the seasonal flavors that Holly (the owner) makes on her own, along with her delicious array of biscotti and other baked goods. Gelato in the summer, and oatmeal, soup and more for substantial meals.
Everyone there is really friendly; you really get taken care of at Bis Co. It's a small place but somehow not often packed -- usually you can find Holly's family there too. Intimate would be the word. Perfect to grab something to go, bring to a party or sit and linger over the paper (or use the free WiFi) and munch. Bis Co for life.
Consider this a preliminary review...
I went in for a (good, strong) coffee and was surprised to find the cups of biscotti scraps available for grazing and I did indulge (if you can indulge on crumbs). I was completely tantalized by the taste and varieties available.
The coffee was fantastic and I will be back to get a biscotti or two.
I'm a new transplant to NYC and am in the process of wandering the streets of various neighborhoods so that I can get a feel of the place and find a permanent home. Sort of like Caine from Kung Fu, except I'm not quite homeless, half-asian, or much of a hero. Except to my mom, of course. I mean a hero to my mom, not a homeless half-asian person.
Anyway, I was wandering the streets of Hell's Kitchen and finding it super charming in a gritty municipal sort of way. Which is not a contradiction in terms according to my tastes. I have always enjoyed cafes, and have consistently lived in neighborhoods with a bevy of non mega-global-corporate coffee options available to me. I'm determined to continue that tradition here in NYC.
Bis. Co. Latte looks like it might be underwhelming at first, but I overheard two guys talking French and decided to give it a shot. Like a microcosm of HK, this little place is able to combine a somewhat stark, sometimes generic look, with charming people and ambiance. Not to mention good, strong coffee. And biscotti. Lots of biscotti. I went for a traditional one this time, but did sample a pumpkin treat that was almost like a little slice of pumpkin pie turned into crust.
Oh, and of course the French guys tried to hit on the waitress. She handled them with charm and aplomb and then joked to the 3 remaining people (me, a student and an old lady...classic coffee shop patrons!) that the Europeans ALWAYS do that. Well done, coffee shop girl!
If you love biscotti and want to ponder a huge collection of sweet and savory varieties, well here is your special spot!
I am not a big biscotti fan, but the biscotti here are small and inexpensive. They also tend to have vaguely healthy ones and I like that. Oatmeal is not a treat its an obligation to your health, right?
I myself like to pop in for a coffee after lunch next door at Tucingo del Valle. They also appear to have some eats like soups and such.
Totally solid. I wish it were near my house or closer to my office!
Great coffee - great attitude - great biscotti - my three favorite things bundled into one little fun store. More varieties of homemade biscotti than you can shake a stick at - Black & Tan (Guinness and butterscotch), Kahlua & Espresso Bean, Lavender & White Chocolate. Yum come now, I am sitting on the bench outside - we can enjoy together :-)
I am ALLLLL about supporting local coffee shops! And this one ROCKS!!! They have samples of ALL of the varieties of their homemade biscotti on the counter--- and you will be surprised at the unique deliciousness of each flavor. DELISH!
Also---- the staff is so kind and eager to give you a recommendation on the homemade soups as well as the Illy coffee varietals... i usually am a sucker for Dunkin Donuts coffee and Dunkin Donuts alone... this coffee is incredible!!
I have recently dove into the Americano, thanks to a Bis. Co. staff recommendation! Check it out! Support our neighborhood businesses!
MUST TRIES:
1. Biscotti Iced Coffee with a dash of skim milk.
2. Black Bean Soup (or any soup there... Holly makes them daily from SCRATCH)
3. Whole wheat English Cranberry or Apricot Scone
4. Grab some carob biscotti for your Puppy!
5. Try ANY of the varieties of Biscotti... they change weekly... there is a sampling bar--- DIG IN!
Excellent selection. Some very unique flavors. Great tasting and inexpensive for NYC
Yummy biscotti! There is a huge variety here. If you don't know what you want, take your time and try the free samples that are set up for you next to the register. Of the ones I tried I liked the oatmeal cranberry the best. Although, I ended up ordering the chocolate with khalua and espresso beans. Definitely has a kick to it! A little pricey for a tiny piece of biscotti but it sure is a tasty little bit.
Note: Will only accept credit card if its over $10.
Third time is the charm.
I stopped in here yesterday while waiting for my laundry and brought my mother, who is visiting. We had a lovely conversation with the owner and other customers. Fantastic selection of inventive, flavorful biscotti and delicious coffee.
I even bought an array of goodies to send to my brother and sister in law in CA to provide them with a little taste of the neighborhood.
A couple of weeks ago while in my old NYC neighborhood, Hell's Kitchen, I made a pit stop at Bis. Co. Latte. I didn't discover this little nook until just before I moved (regrettably so because I love it) but I've visited it almost every time I've been back in NY. There are tons of biscotti and great Illy coffee. Holly (the owner) even created some fun seasonal biscotti with candy canes baked in (I'm bummed I've eaten all the ones I bought). The summer months are also welcomed with gelato, how can one go wrong? The place is cozy and a great place to spend a lazy Sunday.
Bis. Co. Latte is less than a half block from my apartment - I was definitely excited when it opened. I rate it a solid 4 for comfort, good atmosphere, above average coffee, and great selection of food and biscotti
Pros (far more than cons):
Awesome variety of food
Very nice proprietor and staff (they're great)
Tasty coffee
Sometimes open early
Almost never crowded
Bench outside for smoking or soaking up sun
Decent prices
Frequent-drinker cards
Location! This area needs more places like this.
Zipcar gave away free coffee here once.
Stuff to read all over the place.
Real cups! No paper waste when unnecessary here.
Free biscotti samples.
Cons:
Illy coffee - not very imaginative, but good quality.
They close pretty early.
They aren't always open very early.
Somewhat slow service.
Sometimes overly friendly, but who can fault anyone for that. It's not too intense.
Overall I highly recommend this place.
i don't think the fabulous bis.co needs another rave to impress yon yelpers into giving them a try, but i have to add my two cents. because, dude. for some reason most coffee shops-- excuse me, specialty beverage shoppes-- have the attitude to match the fancy espresso maker. not so here.
i ventured out for some overpriced deli water this evening. sandwiched between the fluorescent lit bodegas, this colorful little piece of sweetness called... screw the water, i needed an espresso. they serve illy, which is actually not so great in my book (i do possess the aforementioned attitude to match the fancy espresso maker), but it does fine in a pinch. while waiting for my caffeine, i spied a row of biscotti pieces, waiting, ASKING, to be sampled... surely, there was nothing here for me (god help me, i am currently a self-imposed vegan). but the wonderful woman behind the counter (perhaps the owner?) gladly and thoughtfully spent time pointing out which biscotti were vegan. VEGAN BISCOTTI! of which they always have at least three flavors! i chose dark chocolate pine nut. wonder woman then had a little heart attack when the friendly shop gal i placed my order with handed me my coffee (she was worried i had ordered a latte. IF ONLY).
now that my coffee has a mate again, i'll be back. frequently. oh, and the illy espresso was the smoothest illy i've ever had. (please don't judge me, coffee snobs. i already get it for the vegan thing.)
the cupcake wars are over, and the roving cupcake gangs; the red velvets, the buttercream butchers, and the coconut clusters haven't been spotted in at least two years.
another war has been churning of late, the gelato wars. the nypd stubbornly refuse to do anything about it, but one high ranking official (who asked to remain anonymous) said 'no one in their right mind will try to stop this, because at the end of summer it will all be over anyway. that is, until next year.' yes .. or until brain freeze sets in.
in the meantime, a small shop has opened quietly in hell's kitchen. the owner seemed very nice. surely this friendliness was a ruse, as the opening of this establishment signaled the beginning of another war. a future war....
i am talking about the biscotti wars that are to be. bis.co.latte offers approximately 25 different types of biscotti. i love ginger, and the triple ginger carob chip biscotti did not disappoint. the latte i ordered for dunking was also very good. the lemon poppyseed biscotti had the perfect flavors for the steamy weather on the day i visited. this is the type of place that makes you want to come back several times and try one of everything before you can declare your favorites, so i have some more trips to make.
even with all this biscotti they also serve gelato, which i did not try. why contribute to the growing problem of a warring city? overall this is a great place, minus a star for contributing to the present gelato situation and for keeping the future unstable with their delicious biscotti offerings.
Way back in September when we were having an unseasonably warm day my friend and I spent the entire day walking around and catching up gossip and the details of our lives. He had an appointment to get his hair cut in Hell's Kitchen and we still had an hour to kill... we wanted a snack or coffee of some sort and discovered this place. I tried a sample of a few biscotti... they were all good but what tempted me even more was the BLOOD ORANGE SORBET. I tasted it and I couldn't resist getting a cup. It was amazing... I haven't been back yet since I'm not usually in the Westside... for more Blood Orange sorbet I'm willing to brave the cold for this summer treat.
On the side note... the owner of this cute little place is really sweet and friendly. It's always nice when you get to speak with the owner/chef and they're willing to speak with you about their work and passion.
This place is exactly what the neighborhood needs. Very friendly service, a sweet atmosphere and a great alternative to Starbucks or the Coffee Pot on 9th. They have about a million kinds of biscotti, with lots of free samples. But also other food and snacks, good coffee, etc. Check it out so that they stick around for a while.
i love this place!! i recently discovered it thanks to yelp! it's a quiet place, good for doing work in. the food is delicious and you can even sample all of her biscotti! it's got a very cozy, comfortable vibe that i appreciate. it doesn't get too busy, i have spent hours there on the weekends. they also have free wifi i think. the only thing that i don't like is that the chairs seem to be just a tiny bit low for the tables--i am a short person and had to sit on my bag to be at a comfortable height to do work there.
