What a deal! The fine folks of Birmingham (and they are fine- the nicest people in the world!) have it made with this small but affordable treasure trove right downtown. The collections are awesome (5 rooms of wedgwood china, TONS of native american and south american art and artifacts, a brief but lovely asian art department) and the building is beautiful. All glass and windows, the building itself is airy, spacious, and a delight to meander around in. Last time I was there, I was outside puffing away and a baby bird flew into the glass and broke it's wing. I picked him up, took him inside and at least 4 museum employees assisted me in finding a box and some nesting supplies for him while another employee found phone numbers for local animal doctors. Needless to say, I took him to mom and dad's, where he slowly recovered and now happily resides in their cushy abode. Talk about southern hospitality!

The museum is a must-see for Birmingham natives as well as visitors. I believe it's free to go in  but you can make a donation. It is well worth the trip.

I was impressed with the Birmingham Museum of Art.  Granted, I wasn't expecting much considering how much Birmingham itself sucks, but this was a nice little museum.
The collection is a little far flung without a clear focus, but the large collection of Native American art and the very large Wedgwood collection were nice suprises.  I enjoyed the exhibition of contemporary Native American Pottery.

In my opinion, this is one of the most--if not the most--overlooked attractions in Birmingham.

It was an enjoyable experience for me even though I'm not very knowledgeable about fine art.  There are 2 full floors of works to view.  I will have to go back to see many of the things I wasn't able to the first time.

Best thing about this place is it's cost effectiveness: free parking, free admission.  They request a donation, which is well-warranted.

Our museum here in Birmingham is very nice and it has hosted some world class exhibits.  We saw the POMPEII:TALES FROM AN ERUPTION exhibit this year.  The exhibit was wonderful, very interesting and educational.  The POMPEII exhibit will move to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts at the end of January.  After Houston, the exhibit will retire to Naples, Italy.  If you have a chance, I definitely recomend checking it out.

A small, but lovely art collection.  Including my favorite Robert Motherwell, and random works by Monet, Renoir, Degas.  Also representative works of the folk painter genre, that are Excellent.  And random demonstrations like the monk sand artists.
