I was excited to check it out.  I work down the streeet and I really like barber shops.  The girl that cut my hair wasn't very confident.  I've got some facial hair and as she's trimming it she says, "I'm not very good at this".......seriously?  That sucks.  If you don't do facial hair and a guy walks in with facial hair....maybe let someone else take it.
The hair cut wasn't terrible, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted which was just the same hair I had just a little shorter.  Atmosphere didn't do much for me, but it was cool.  I MUCH prefer the traditional feel of Avenue Barbershop on S. Congress.
I might try again and get a different "Barber", but we'll see.   I'll probably stick with Avenue.

Just took my little brother in to get a mohawk today. Took about 25 minutes to have his name called. I wouldn't mind if they allowed appointments. But anyway he got his haircut by Sarah and it is the best mohawk he has ever been given. (Much better than the one i tried to give him a few years ago in the bathroom, too!) Way cheap compared to California barbershops. Will definitely take him back.

Great option of a haircut.  This is a great update to the idea of a barbershop.  They even offer a beer with the cut.

Have been twice, once south and once north.  Both were good experiences.  Friendly staff, quick service without an appointment.

Men's cut $19+tip.

"Are you the guy that wrote the review on yelp?"

Ok, so - after my last (not so stellar) review of bird's, I went back to get a shave and haircut - and the girl behind the counter recognizes me from yelp, apologizes that they stood me up for my shave last week, and gives it to me for free!

Well, sufficed to say, my opinion of Bird's has shot up considerably.

My shave and haircut were both pleasant, and I was pleased with the results.

Kudos to Bird's, for knowing what good customer service is, and for reading yelp!

(p.s. you guys still need to offer shaves all week long, dammit!)

To me, getting my haircut is like going on a date. I'm paying for the conversation and the haircut is thrown in for free.

So, after growing my hair out for two years, I decided to hit up Bird's to donate some of it and leave the rest in a mohawk.

By luck of me signing in at the right moment, Shannon was the lucky girl who got to cut my hair. And I'm pretty sure cutting my hair was probably the most fun she had had all week.

"Rock Lobster," came over the airwaves and she said that she was having a surreal moment. Apparently, I look like a guy she used to date, to which, I congratulated her on her good tastes. Said guy, had hair just like mine and his favorite song was "Rock Lobster."

This being our first date, I didn't delve deeper into her psyche to retrieve the full meaning of this statement. It could mean one of several things: A. I have a visage which she is attracted to and reminds her of someone who was good in her life; therefore the door is open for me to pursue. B. I have a visage which she is attracted to and reminds her of some jerk; therefore the door is closed. C. She just made it all up to make my head spin. D. I really don't look like anyone she has ever known, but she's is hinting that there is attraction. E. She wants a big tip. F. I'm an idiot.

Shannon then offered me a beer which I accepted. Methinks she wants to loosen me up a bit so she can take advantage of me.

So we get the hair cut and start trying to put it into a mohawk. We have to grab an extra stylist to help with spraying and drying. Shannon then says "You can come back anytime if you can't get it up." Which was obviously a Freudian slip.

This was without a doubt the most fun date/haircut experience I've ever had.

So, later that night after I had been at the Side Bar for about an hour who do you think walks in the door? Apparently, her friends tipped her off that I was there. What's a guy to do? Is she interested or not? Let me know by giving me Useful, Funny and Cool votes and compliments with advice.

Well, it had been a few months, and Jonathan W. still hadn't used his gift certificate (thank you, Yelp), so I decided to go cash it in myself.  I was concerned.  I had only been to a "barbershop" with my grandpa and dad, and I did NOT want my hair to look like theirs.  Fortunately, It doesn't.

The girl who cut my hair did a great job--better than the last salon I visited, actually.  Plus, she didn't ask me about things like dating, makeup, or when I would have kids.  We mostly talked about UFC.  I have never had a stylist, male or female, who watched fights before, so this was a nice change, especially since I was planning to watch the Henderson/Silva fight that night.

One thing about this place that appeals to me is that you can just walk in and get a haircut.  I do not like appointments.  Typically, my pattern is to look at my hair one day and just decide "I need a haircut, and I want it now."  If this happens on a Monday, I get screwed because salons are usually closed.  Bird's is not!  They are open 7 days a week.  If I decide on a weekend, I also get screwed, because salons are booked up in advance.  Bird's was not!  I called; they didn't have a wait; I went there and immediately got a haircut.  This is perfect for me.

I also enjoyed the atmosphere at Bird's.  First, they gave me a beer.  That's so thoughtful!  I bet it keeps people content when there's a wait, too.  The music was pleasant and loud enough to hear, but no so loud as to be distracting.  A video game was available, and the decor also reflected a vintage arcade theme.  Magazine selection was also top notch.  I read "Mental Floss," a publication with which I was previously unfamiliar, but which I would definitely choose again.

Overall, this is a cool place.  Friendly, competent staff.  Appealing location and interior.  And, the price seemed very fair to me--$39 for the "Ladybird."

I really dig not having to make an appointment!  And, you can go ANY day of the week...sans an appointment!
My barber (stylist) was super cool, easy to talk to and pretty competent!

I'm totally envious that almost all the girls had pink/purple highlights in their hair!

And, I played a really crappy game of Ms. Pac Man while I was waiting.  I'll have to get my hair done more often so I can bone up on my Pac Man skills and beat the high score!

Bonus...Ladybird special only $39.

I was recommended Birds as a cheap place to get curly hair cut right.

The cut:
Most of the stylists at Birds are (I think) trained barbers or cosmotologists.  Whatever they are, they almost all know how to cut curly hair.  My first visit got me a better-then-I'm-used-to curly hair cut.  My second cut was the best cut of my past three or four years.  Unfortunately my most recent cut was less then stellar.  All I asked for was no rattail..

The environment:
The first time I walked in I nearly threw up.  The decor is disgustingly ironic meets beauty bar hipster.  The foosball table would make up for the terrible mural if only there were people to play with.

I usually only wait five minutes (although Saturdays you could wait up to 30 minutes).  The free Lone Star was a nice touch, especially since I'm not used to free drinks for a $20 cut.

I'm a short-haired girl, so it's critical to find a place that won't charge me more than a short-haired guy just because I have boobs.  Thank you, Birds!  No matter who I get they always do an awesome job on my hair.  They're all really nice, too.

I love the decor and the classic arcade cabinet.  How cool is it that you get to play Dig Dug while waiting for a haircut?  I usually go on Saturday mornings, so I skip the beer.

I'm not going to make this some kind of long winded review or anything because, frankly, it's going to be relatively easy:

The Pros:
- Beer while u wait. Or water.
- Cool atmosphere
- Decent prices for a good stylish haircut (19.00 for a 'short cut')
- Darn nice hair stylists

The Cons:
- Can't make an appt, but you can put your name on the list. I have to say that it's probably one of the least useful things I've ever seen when it comes to attempting to keep a schedule. I'd think that, if you put your name on a list, when you walk in the door, the next available stylist would be yours. However, had my wife's name put on the list and we came and sat while 3 people went ahead of her. Their names were not on it. When I asked the girl working there why that was, she said she thought the list was more to guarantee that you were actually going to get a haircut that day or something like that...but it didn't necessarily determine the order. Hmmm...weird.
- The music is way, way  unnecessarily loud sometimes...and I love music...AM a musician. It could be turned down just a little bit. Maybe I'm getting old.... *sigh*
- The loud-ass video game. And...once again...I love video games...but the video game they have set up must be turned up as high as it can possibly go. Combine that with the loud music, a beer, and shears...and you have a potentially deadly situation.......
- Can't get a consistent person to cut your hair due to the fact that you can't schedule something. Now...I'll caveat that with the fact that I haven't had a 'bad' haircut per se', but I've gotten 'better' haircuts from different stylists, and I wish I could schedule something with those people.

Overall, I love Bird's. Just a few little tiny tweaks and I think it'd pretty much be perfect.

i don't know how i started this weird tradition of getting a haircut on my vacations, but my most recent trip to austin brought me to birds. i got the ladybird special and am pleased as punch with my haircut. my stylist was fast and competent, and my hair smelled so good afterwards i bought the shampoo/conditioner she used (which i never do). on a side note, i am decidedly uncool but i never felt out of place or unwelcome at any time. minus a star for a weird bathroom lock (almost had an unexpected visitor). oh and also the shampoo, while thorough and perfectly acceptable, was not as massage-y as i like.

The only reason I gave this place a shot was because of all you fine yelpers and a couple friends who get their hairs cut here regularly. I had prejudged Birds as a trendy, hipster place that would have to be more expensive than most places (barbers) in order to offset the cost of their "complimentary" beverages.

Overall I was very pleased with my early saturday afternoon visit. My review goes like this:

3 stars for a solid haircut and a reasonable wait time for a walk-in.

4 stars for only charging me the mohawk rate (After all, I was really just coming in for some pre-emergent mullet taming and a little texture).

But wait... No one offered me any beer! I suppose I'll give them the benefit of the doubt this time because I was in the chair all of 10 minutes. Maybe next time.

Ok so the only reason I didn't give them a 5 star review was cause I didn't get a very nice feeling from the grrl at the counter.  Maybe she is just too cool and angsty for my professional attire.

No matter, I love the haircut I got from them sofar.  My girlfriend kept telling me to quit wasting my money on Toni & Guy.  Needless to say that I got a good boy cut for less than half of what I was paying at that foofie salon.  Hey no buyers remorse either!  This is what it feels like to have the weight lifted off your head AND shoulders.  Me likey cute haircutting chick too.  She was nice and I asked her if she charged extra for the therapy session.  I think they get that question alot.  I didn't feel bad about tipping a fiver on a 20 dollar cut.  But I did feel bad about dumping on her.  Sorry cute haircutting chick.

Very cool surroundings.  I felt like I was at the arcade and it made me want to spend my lunch money on the sit-down arcade game.  I have a feeling that I have found my new harcutting place.  After all, I'm just a guy with short hair who has to look professional most of the time.  I shouldn't be charged *brace yourself* $60 dollars before tip when my hair will never get more than an inch and a half.  Maybe it had something to do with the girl who was cutting my hair.  Damn I was a sucker!  Not any more.  I can go get drunk with the money I saved.  ;D

My very first Bird's Barbershop experience.

-Ride my bike to their convenient North Austin location.  Lock it up, and walk in to get my name on the walk-in list
-About 20 minutes later my name gets called and I'm introduced to Sarah.  Here's how the conversation went.

Sarah: Hi, David?
David: That's me
Sarah: Great to meet you, I'm Sarah.  Come on back this way.
David: Thanks Sarah, good to meet you as well.
Sarah: Can I get you a Lone Star?
David: ..... why... why, yes!  Thank you!

This was the beginning of one of the more wonderful haircut experiences I've had in a while.  Most folks I've met where one of the first three things they say to you is "Can I get you a Lone Star?" tend to be really nice genuine people and the folks at Bird's are no exception.  I got a great haircut from a cool chick in a really sweet shop.  I'll definitely be back here again, no question.

Another great find from the wonderful folks here on Yelp.  Thanks again everyone!

I went to Birds after waiting tables all day, and got there just after 7pm.  I love that they're open until 9, and the wait time was nearly nothing.  The girl at the front desk said it would be about 20 minutes, but I think it was more like 10-15.
I've been trying to grow out my hair for a long time, but always chop it off again out of frustration... so wasn't really sure what i'd wanted to do with it- I let the stylist know that I wanted to let it grow, but have some sort of style, though I was unsure of what the style itself was.
She was very patient with my very vague description of what I wanted, and let me know some helpful products I'd been wondering about.  She was very nice, and talkative... and she ended up giving me a haircut the made me feel much better about going there after all.  It's only $39 for a ladybird- cut, dry and style...
I'll definitely go back again, around the same time to stay away from any potential weekend or busy time crowds.

This Bird's got me in on New Year's Eve when the South location was on a big ol' wait and wasn't taking anymore people. I desperately needed a haircut--I'd been attempting to trim my own bangs while out of town for the holidays (bad idea)--and had procrastinated on getting an appointment with my regular guy. Plus I could get styled for NYE while I was at it. Perfect!

I saw Shannon, and she was great. Sweet, friendly, and good at what she does. She made my cut a little more hip, but not too hip for me to pull off. I dig it. A few weeks later I went back for a bang trim and got right in after calling on my way. $5. Sweet.

I live South, but this makes going a little north from the office totally worth it. I started fiending for summery highlights today (damn Spring weather in February!), so we'll see.

Oh, this location's given the BF military-looking cuts the last couple of times. Like it's too short on the sides, or something. I don't know what that's about though, so I'm still keeping all 5 stars.

Best haircut I've ever had.

Here's what you need to know:

Ask for Sarah.
Ask her about her NYC squatter pad (really interesting story)
Pay $19 (if you're a guy)
Tip $5

Repeat.

PS  My girl got her hair cut on the same day at the South Birds and it looks super hot.

PSS Go ahead and click on the "funny" button cuz this is HIGH comedy.  Hilarious.  My funniest review yet.

Ok fine, I'll settle for "useful"

OK, these kids also get my ridiculous hair cut description, as well they should.  I love it, and love Bird's.  I got a little miffed when I realized I had put my name on the list up north rather than down south, but then I thought to myself, "Self, you haven't been to the North Bird's since the Fan-Fuckin-Tabulous-DK-Fuckin-A-and-Honeycomb Opening Party, and you oughta drop in and give it a try."

I am SOOOO glad I did.  Shannon did a wonderful job, not just of cutting my hair, but of being my stylist.  Yeah, I used the word.  She didn't actually give me style tips, because, as old school Kung-Fu flicks and my homies in the Wu-Tang would tell you, my style  "is immensely strong, and immune to nearly any weapon...when it's properly used, it's almost invincible."   But she was extremely kind, interesting, and funny all afternoon.  It made this visit so pleasurable, I may not head back to the south spot for a bit.  We laughed about the people who turn down the free beer, we laughed about books, we told each other nice stories about kites and girls and guys and childhood toys.  She made me feel old when she told me that she had the Madonna song that was playing in the background on a karaoke tape she had as a kid, and I told her I had the ACTUAL album on tape as a KID.  She made me feel better when she gave me a hard time for having a crush on Madonna back in the day, and we laughed when I gave her a hard time for having a crush on hair band guys when she was young (Actual quotes - "The Guys from NELSON.  Really?  Weren't they twins?"  "Yeah, but one was hotter than the other...")

She made my haircut great, and she made my day.  I will certainly be back.

We went to Bird's last night for a haircut for my husband.  I had read reviews on Yelp so I knew we were going to try this place for him since he really needs a place where he can get in and get out.  He doesn't like to mess about with appointments because he can never keep them.  Kris got Nikki as a stylist last night.  She was really nice and listened to him on exactly what he was looking for and didn't laugh at him when he said he wanted a Faux-Hawk.

I loved that there is a litte stage where they have live music sometimes.  They had a good selection of magazines for those waiting on stylists or other customers.  I was offered a beverage while I waited.  Some dude was playing Pac-Man at the old school video game console and they were playing M.I.A. on the loudspeaker.  Very cool, very Austin.

After seeing Jamie's hair at the Moonshine event I think I might have to go there for a cut.  Her style and cut is very cool.

Bird's may have gained a loyal customer in my husband since they offered and brought him a beer to enjoy while he got his hair cut.  And I might add, he is even more adorable than he was when he walked in.

I went here with my boyfriend. Good selection of magazines and a surprising amount with pics of guy haircuts. He picked some out, showed them to Sarah who cut his hair, and did a damn good job. Good small talk and complimentary beer. She did a good job matching the look he was going for and now he has sexy hair instead of super shaggy.

(Burnet Location) Five stars. They don't take creative license with my hair. They offer me free beer or bottled water. They talk to me as if I was the only customer that day (where do they get the conversational energy?). And when I say cut it to {here} they don't leave extra in hopes that I'll need to return sooner than I want.

...and I thought when I downgraded from my stylist I had to go to SuperCuts or one of those tittiebarber joints. Thank dawg for Birds.

UPDATE: They gave me a green mohawk for Eeyore's (S. Lamar location). I love how it was on their list of services. I don't know who had more fun, me getting my mohawk or the girl who did it for me. Birds is fun and friendly.

Here's a Yelp-style Jeopardy question for you:

A. When you need your haircut to go to the wedding of the girl who regularly does your hair, but is out-of-town planning for her wedding.

Q: What is irony?

Birds really helped me out in a bind. First off, no appointments, just walk-in or call ahead when you feel like getting your haircut. I planned on getting my hair cut around lunch time, but since I was out late at the Yelp Pre-ACL party, I didn't get around to it until 4pm. So I was really happy to didn't have to keep a set appointment, I just went in, when I finally felt well enough to get my hair cut.

Second, they paired me up with Brad. Fabulous! He totally understood what I wanted my hair to do. It wasn't a dramtic change, but he was able to trim it and thin it out (I have deceptively thick hair) making it so much easier to style. My hair has never been this long before. I love it, but was at a loss on what to do with it. Brad was able to tame the wild beast that is my hair and was a perfectionist when styling my bangs. Now it looks all sleek and stylish; and maybe now I can give my poor ponytail holder a break and wear it down more often!

Full disclosure:  Birds' sponsored a recent Yelp event and I genuinely like these guys.  But this review would be the same regardless...the reason?  I got a great haircut in a fun room.

The short version is that Sarah saved my (hair's) life:  my mop tends to take on the follicle qualities of a televangelist when I let it go too long, and as I wear it short, I'm usually the type of guy who wakes up, notices the problem, and seeks out a way to rectify the situation sooner than later.  As you might imagine, this can make scheduling appointments several days or weeks in advance dicey, and the fact that Birds takes (and encourages) walk-ins is a big help.

Couple that with the mojo of the new location, i.e, 80s videogame themed, and it didn't take much convincing for me to head a little out of my way for a new and improved trim.  Birds set up shop here with the idea that they could accommodate all of the things that make this place fun (in addition to the cuts themselves), a built-in DJ booth, small side patio, a stage where, if the mood and opportunity strikes, they can stage bands.

For some folks, that might be more stimuli-intensive than what they're after, and to each his own.  But for me, it doesn't get much better than a rockstar haircut, a cold Lone Star and a couple of games of Frogger.  Because even if your hair lives in the modern day, who's to say a step back to my youth isn't cool every now and then.

I like it actually a little bit better than I like the S. Austin Birds.  That is because I love the tabletop arcade game machine in the waiting area, while foosball is cool, tabletop classic arcade games is way better.  Aside from that it is a far more convenient location and at least so far, since it is new, the waiting is far less.

So if you want a haircut millions of times better than supercuts and a cool atmosphere to boot, this is the place.   This is not a discount haircut, but it is also not an extravagant overpriced haircut, you get more than you pay for with a cool friendly staff and a great environment.  After years of cutting my own hair and dreading getting a haircut I finally have a place I can comfortably go whenever I am looking a bit shaggy.

I am so excited that Birds added this location.  I had been going to the South location for about a year, but it was always a hassle for me to get there since I live in Northeast Austin.  I love the atmosphere of Birds.  It's not pretentious at all, and the prices are reasonable.  I've gone to Shannon the last two times, and she's awesome.  She's a great conversationalist, and my hair looks as good as it has when I've spent three times as much.

casual, cool, fun place - great haircuts, too!  The call ahead an hour before as opposed to setting an appintment two weeks in advance really fits my fly by the seat of my pants lifestyle.  My only neg - the casual, walk-in, rocking atmosphere doesn't quite jell w/ the $39 price tag for a womean's haircut.  I'll go back though!

Boyfriends, pay attention.

Take your special lady friend to Birds. She will love the value, the attention, and the results. You will enjoy the Lone Star beer, the classic arcade games from softball leagues of your youth, and the fact that you can (potentially) snag your lady's Lone Star, if she's too distracted by the awesomeness of her own haircut.

Ladies tend to get their hair chopped or colored right after a breakup. There's something special about having someone fawn over you, tell you how pretty you look. It's usually a solo thing, and Birds can certainly help the brokenhearted, but I say, Men! Now is the time to show your lady that you care. That you notice her highlights, her delicate layering, her new shine. That you love her enough to wait while she gets her haircut. Shhh -- no one has to know that it's the Lone Star doing all the talking.

Where else can I get my hair cut in the evening, plus play Galaga if I have to wait?

The woman who cut my hair at this location was very nice and gave me a good cut.  Plus, there was just the right amount of conversation.  Getting your hair cut can be awkward if the person cutting your hair isn't a good conversationalist (twice I've had a guy at the Lamar location not say a single word to me the entire time), so this was definitely welcome.

Plus, the price is excellent.  I'm getting a good cut for about half the price I was paying.

This is definitely the Bird's location to go to.

Great haircut.  Sarah was very nice.  And they offer you a Lonestar.  Top notch.

I had a really positive experience today at Birds on Burnet!
I tend to cut/dye/shave/destroy my own hair from time to time, usually when I'm feeling anxious and insecure about how my life's going. So, with the stressors of settling into a new house in a town where I hardly know a soul (and a full moon rising) I found myself having a really hard time keeping me dirty mitts off the tresses.
Was reading up on local salons, looking for a place that was creative but without snobbery or pretensions of being hipper-than-thou.
Yelp! and a blurb in the Chronicle on Birds lured me over to Birds.
I called them up at the last minute for their Ladies Night Special (that Nagel-esque poster really spoke to me! I still love Duran Duran, they poisoned my mind!) and even though they were booked up in the evening, they found time for me in the afternoon and gave me the discount!
Donna, my stylist, super cute and sweet, immediately put me at ease in the chair. It was really great to see her get inspired by new haircolor ideas and the challenge of dealing with my wild, crazy, super-shaggy hair!
She put up with all of my rants about NYC gentrification, being old and unamused, my sordid follicle exploits, growing up in a stealth-Hispanic household in Greenwich, CT, etc... suffice to say, she managed the whole affair with grace and aplomb.
I am really happy with my new 'do; less crazy hair to manage and more fun color! I'll definitely be back!
Might even go for a Mohawk next time, no joke!
My mantra:
You only live once, campers!
Life's too damn short to be boring.
