Just to prove that my first experience was not a fluke, I returned to the King's River with the Birch Circle crew for a second July 4th weekend. Yep, definitely just as awesome an experience! A great time, and I returned home with a tan and some new friends.
I was making vacation plans for July a couple months ago, and a friend suggested we leave on July first. I said no way, there's this amazing trip I go on over the holiday weekend and we have to leave after that. I am so glad I postponed my other trip, because once again, I had a GREAT time on the river.
Some of the guides were the same as last year, but there were also a couple of new ones. All were friendly and experienced, and made us all feel safe on the river, resulting in everyone having a fun time on the class 3 rapids.
The chefs, Adit and Tal (not sure about the spelling there) are simply amazing. Some of the food I remembered from last year, and I continue to be amazed by what they can cook up in a make-shift kitchen under a tarp. Saturday night was my favorite, homemade flat breads cooking over the open fire, served with hummus, and baba ganoush. I could eat that stuff all night! But then there was a greek salad and lamb meatballs and couscous. Seriously gourment stuff!
Paul, the owner of BCA, and Krista, his assistant, are simply amazing at organizing such a large group of people. We were about 80 people ranging in age from 8-80, and that can be hard to contain. Especially in multiple rafts. Not for them! Everything ran smoothly.
Our DJs for the weekend were affiliated with Parallel Reality, and Ira, Seva and Ricky had just about everyone up and dancing at some point. From reggae to house, breaks and a little pop, even some "oldies," there was something for everyone.
I think I've found my July 4th tradition. I just got home last night and already I'm looking forward to next year!
