[Review by the 2d kid:]
Now that I'm 14 months old, I finally got to see what all the fuss is about with Bing. She's been cutting my brother's hair (see his review) and my father's, since before I was born. Up until now, I've only gotten to watch them. But my dad finally got sick of people complimenting on his cute little girl (I'm not), so I went in for my first real cut.
Obviously, I've heard what a pro Bing is. So I decided to give her a bit of a challenge. No way I was going quietly, in fact. Basically, my strategy was to squeal and wriggle as much as possible, and dare her not to draw blood.
Well, Bing came through. She endured patiently, and got most of my hair cut. She was just as sweet as my family says. So as a reward to her and to my parents, next time I'm going to cooperate completely. Really.

I really struggled with this because Bing is so nice, but every time I blow dry my hair I feel pissed so I have to get this off my chest. If you are someone that doesn't believe in spending lots of money for a haircut (and hasn't) then I think you will do OK here. However, if you appreciate a high quality cut, just don't do it. I am broke lately and not able to shell out the dough for my usual salon in the city. I am also growing out a shorter cut, so I asked around for someone that could just trim the dead hair and cut long layers. I was referred to Bing.
When she was done my hair looked worse that when I sat down. I have thick hair and she cut so much at the bottom (no, no for thick hair) that it got frizzy and I have a mushroom head. The layers just don't lay right, so I must flat iron my hair to look normal. So, she didn't give me a mullet or a weird hairstyle, its just low level technique.
Think barbershop for women. Sorry.
Bing rules. She does a great job for a very reasonable price. Guys who pay $50 and up for a haircut, I will never understand ye.
Still going to see Bing. Still happy with the cuts. Bing is the bomb.

Bing is really nice and she does a great job. I went in for a cut a couple weeks ago (I have long, curly hair) and she handled it with great care. She was also very sensitive about not taking off too much length (I told her about my last cut, which I reviewed under Grand Hairport).
It's very affordable, one of the only places I know of to get a fair price for a good cut.
I have an amazing cut. Really, absolutely the best attractive cut I have ever had in my life. A month ago I was in desperate need of a cut. I have the tendency to grow my hair super long only to cut it when I get around to resembling Conan. It was time. So I hopped in for an appointment with Bing herself. Really wonderful experience ...
She razored through my long locks (wow, I didn't even know you could use a Razor) and Massaged my scalp (drool...) for 1 hour and 15 minutes! Total bliss. Bing was super careful and took her time to shape my face. I finally have a cut that grows out great too and I look forward to heading back for highlights. $45, not too shabby. I have had cheaper, but never better.
Thanks Bing!
I'm extremely picky and hate getting my hair cut because I always leave disappointed.
Bing fit me in as a walk in and was really nice. I told her what I wanted and she did just what I asked.
I am looking forward to going back, having a great cut . I am withholding the 5th star only because I want to be able to up this review on a return visit.

Ive been in three times now, a record for me and hair salons, and every cut that I have had from Bing has been perfect. I think after a very long haul I can finally say that I have a hair dresser.
Again,
my search for the perfect hair salon has once more failed me. Maybe i should curse the wicked name of http://yelp.com for leading me astray...i don't know anymore. I went in without high expectations, outside of just hoping that the cut would come out nice. When i made the appointment i even asked to have it with the owner of the salon in hopes that they would be more about customer service and satisfaction. Not true. After ignoring me in the lobby for close to five minutes, the stylist seemed annoyed to cut my hair even when we did have random, slightly akward chats here and there. It was the fact that i asked for a trim and more length was taken off than i would have liked and the nice layers that i once had now looked like choppy, feathery '80s hair band hair and now that it's so short i have to wait for it to grow out before i can have skilled hands try to fix the damn thing. I asked for a precision cut bang, which was crooked BY FAR and had to ask her to go over it two more times before i just decided to fix it myself when i got home. When she blew out my hair she whipped me with my own wet hair repeatedly in the face, it was the first time i had to hold my hand up to try to prevent the whipping from slapping my retinas and she didn't even soften it up after i did that, plus she flatironed my hair without any product, a practice that i don't even do at home. Yes, i tipped the girl, times are tough. But after leaving my appointment i took a walk in the area and found it saturated with a lot of nicer salons that charge about the same that i'd rather try next time.
Bing has been cutting my hair for as long as I can remember and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Fast, friendly, precise...and all at a very reasonable price. Making sense of my coarse, poofy, uncooperative hair is no walk in the park, but Bing has it all under control. She's usually booked solid on weekends so call ahead of time to get an appointment. Just don't call when I need to see her!
Parking isn't that bad either despite being in Rockridge. I can usually find a non-metered spot across College from her shop in the neighborhood.
Joni's the best.
She really knows hair, and will do whatever she can to accommodate you into her schedule. She only works two days a week - she's REALLY worth the wait. I've had to look through two different hair stylists to find her - but it was worth the wait. She's talented and know how to use the tools of the trade.
Keep up the good work Joni!
Always a procrastinator, I'd waited to schedule a cut until my bangs were in my eyes again. My awesome regular hair fellow is out of town, and I needed a quick summer fix.
Based on Yelp reviews, I called Bing's. They told me I could come in right away, which I did--they're very conveniently located in Rockridge. Miriam greeted me when I got there. She listened carefully and asked questions during the pre-cut consultation and also checked in frequently during the cut. She gave me exactly the cut and styling I wanted, and the price ($45) was super reasonable.
I will definitely return!
I know that everyone is giving her five stars, but for me, I didn't have a good experience with her.
I wanted an A-line bob and had medium-length hair. The front of the bob she got right, but somehow, ended up missing the back.
What also bugged me was that she knew how much hair was going to sneak under the cover, yet she didn't insist of my using a robe, so I left with tons of hair down my shirt.
Needless to say, I had to go to a different stylist the next day to get the back of my hair fixed.
Next time, I'll just make an appointment at a good place.
Bing really listens to what you want and pulls some magic off for not very expensive. Also, she gave me a great deal the other day when I popped in just to get my bangs trimmed!
made my appt and walked in the same day. service was awesome, bing works fast and furious and she got my cut exactly how i asked her to! and its only $45 for a cut!!!!!!!!!! i don't know about you but that is AMAZING since i'm used to paying at least $60.
its better to make an appt ahead of time since it tends to get busier on the weekends and weeknights.
parking is tricky but deal with it ;)
Bing did an updo for my wedding. It was incredible. I have straight, straight, straight, thick Asian hair. All it wants to do is lay straight and point to the ground. With a ton of pins and some kind of smoothing balm, Bing gave me a beautiful classy updo meant for hair twice the length of mine, and she tightly fastened the gardenia I brought with me. She was very up front and told me she wasn't sure if she could execute the updo I wanted (I brought a magazine pic) because my hair wasn't long enough, but when she was done, it literally looked just like the picture and amazingly, every hair stayed in place until the end of the night. My wedding pictures look great, and everyone who knows me is blown away by how Bing's updo turned my plain-Jane straight boring hair into something really glamorous for my big day.
1 star for being able to walk in and get a haircut.
Half a star for charging $30.
3 stars for giving me a good haircut.
1 star for polite service.
-1 star for yanking my hair while fading it. (I'm a woossie)
-Half a star for scaring me with the razor blade held closely to my eyes
When Joni stopped cutting hair (a few years ago) to start a family, I was crushed... not only had she cut my hair for almost 10 years, but she is one of the few stylists who actually listens to what you want-- anything from your usual, to complete makeover transistions. When I found out she was working @ B & J (cool name) Salon on College Ave., I was excited, because I hadn't changed my haircut in 10 years... she helped find me a new style 10 years back, and I hadn't changed it since then... she listened to what I wanted, and got me up to date... so much so that a week ago, in a bar I frequent, a girl who I've seen maybe twice, and have never spoken to, came up to me and said I look soooo much better w/ my new haircut, to which I responded, "thanks!, and your name is?"... Joni is that good.
Bing knows hair. My hair is coarse and wavey and graying. Bing knows color. My hair changes texture when I travel. Bing's haircuts are versatile. I highly recommend Bing if you are looking for a stylist who can cut and color hair, both classical and trendy styles. I get compliments on my hair cut & color, and that is why I return to Bing every 6 months! DD
EDIT (10-18-09): Joni no longer works at Bing's and is not cutting hair at the moment. I still think she's a great stylist, though (see review below).
So today, I went to see Bing. She's a very nice woman, super cute and knows what she's doing. She takes her time and makes sure your cut is perfect. I came out feeling a lot lighter as my hair was long before and my pocket was not much lighter for it! Bing does a great cut at a great price. It's so weird getting your hair cut with a razor but, believe me, that is how many professionals do it and those types charge 100 or more but not at Bing's. Though you can do a walk in, I advise you make an appointment (it's not too difficult). I also advise you take the BART as it is less than a 10 minute walk from the Rockridge station and you don't need to worry about parking (and it's a mess on the weekends). There's also a bus stop less than a block from there.
Joni is wonderful stylist and I highly recommend her! Friendly, tentative and will keep asking you questions to be sure that your cut is just right. Because she has her own station, she and the others don't take credit cards so be sure to bring cash or your check book. Make an appointment with her (see below).
I like B&J's for it's close location to my house (an easy bike ride away!), it's easy-going atmosphere, friendly service, and because Joni is there to cut my hair. Once Joni assessed the situation with my hair and bangs, she declared, "You are no longer allowed to cut your own bangs!" It's hard to disagree with that statement since my bangs were a crazy mess and Joni came to save the day. In the back, I got a really nice layered 'do that's just right for the summer weather.
Joni just cut my hair a week or so ago. I have curly hair and it's always a struggle with stylists who think cutting curly hair is just the same as straight hair. Joni did a *great* job--she found all my trouble spots and worked with them to leave me with a great cut (that's the key to curly hair--if you ain't working with it, you're working against it!). Thanks, Joni!!!
Joni has been cutting my hair for more than nine years and each cut has been clean and stylish. She has just started cutting hair after a long hiatus and hasn't lost a step. She charges $35-$40 for a cut, (on college ave. that is a bargain) but if you refer 2 clints to her she will do your next cut for half off, you can't beat that. Call her at 510-459-4421 to set up an appt.
Formerly B&J's Salon, Bing's Salon is where you find Bing, one of the cheeriest and skilled haircutters around. Just need a simple trim? Looking to do something wild and different with your hair? Bing can do it all, and at the right price, too. Put your hair in Bing's hands and you'll come out looking great, every single time.
B&J's is conveniently located in the Upper Rockridge area of Oakland on College Avenue. There are numerous boutiques, parlours, cafes, and bookstores nearby. The atmosphere in the salon is very relaxed, but sophisticated. I think everyone would feel welcome here as it is not pretentious even though Bing and Joni are VERY professional. Joni cut my hair in a much needed modern asymetrical layered shoulder length do. I have very frizzy difficult Asian hair so she took the time to dry it and apply product so we could see how it would really look. I love it! If you need a more modern do, consult with Joni. She will walk you through it. Later that week, I went back for a dye and she wove in two colors. It came out great. I get compliments on my hair and usually it is very course and grey! Now the colors pop but it still looks natural. Next, I may go back for a Japanese straightener as they do that too.
bing is a nice lady and always fits me in within a reasonable time frame. her haircuts are good and when she did highlights for me a year ago, everyone commented how natural they looked. i can't afford highlights again anytime soon ($100? dont' remember) but her cuts are great. the only issue is parking. then again, it's my fault for not remembering the quarters when I go. she also is funny and laughs a lot.
