10 reviews for Bill's Tavern & Brewhouse
I love this place! It's the best place in town to leisurely have a few beers. The food is traditional pub food and is good. But the beer is what we go for -- some great stuff on tap, and a cool atmosphere.
We went to CB for a long weekend, and stopped into Bill's (after having gone many times on different trips before) to have a beer. Notice I said "a" beer. We ended up staying for hours enjoying an afternoon of day drinking, and met a nice older couple who ended up picking up our whole tab without telling us... I don't think they knew how long we'd been there and what our tab was when they offered!
I wish this place was open later on the weekends.
I was relieved to find a nice pub in the middle of Cannon Beach. I love trying new beers and Bill's selections didn't disappoint. I love when a good Stout is on the menu!
The food was good, too. The halibut fish and chips had a high fish to batter ratio, which I always appreciate. Their oyster shooters were tasty, though the cocktail sauce was a little overpowering.
A great chill spot, for sure!
It kinda makes me sad that the two reviews bringing this place down are sort of whiny. I had a good experience here. I thought the bartenders/servers were above average. They have a good beer selection. I had a burger. It was average. There don't seem to be too many bar options in Cannon Beach, so I think this is a good place to go relax and have a beer and hang out for a while.
I had a very pleasant lunch at Bill's. Considering the location (centrally located, near shops catering to tourists), I would not have been surprised to find mediocre food and high prices. Instead, I found very agreeable food, good service, and prices that were quite reasonable. All in all, this was a great place to find lunch in an unfamiliar town. Three of us had the clam chowder, and it was creamy and tasty, rather than the gloppy, overly thick product available elsewhere. The house Porter was very nice, and the iced tea was above average - not the sweetened mix that shows up all too often. I plan to come back to Bill's whenever I'm along this stretch of the coast.
The manager yelled at us for moving chairs from the dining room, even though it was the waitress who did it. The guy was such an asshole we left and went somewhere else. Avoid!
I love Cannon Beach, and this place really tops off a day or evening there nicely. The first time I went to Bill's it was a pretty cold and windy November evening. The atmosphere in Bill's was perfect and the staff was very friendly. I enjoyed their brews, but have to say perhaps I have been spoiled visiting many of the great little microbrews in Oregon, and did find their beers lacking for my tastes. The food was great and overall it was a very pleasurable experience.
Return trips have been about the same.
We sat and waited around for a while until we finally figured out that you had to place your orders at the bar.
The servers just walked around us, and never even bothered to inform us of this fact.. so very considerate of them!
After we ordered from the bar, it took 40 minutes for us to get our fish and chips. We were almost done eating when one of the waitresses just reached over my table and helped herself to some ketchup, so that she could pass it over to the next table that she was serving.
Look, I know that she did not serve us, and that she was not getting a tip directly from my table.. but how rude is that? She did not even say, "excuse me".
I know that this is a bar and not really a place where one would go to get food.. either way.. for beers or for food, I won't be back for sure! There's no reason to treat your customers like crap!
We got to Cannon Beach rather late on friday night wanting some quick satisfying food and stumbled upon Bill's. It was a little more crowded than other places and we decided to give it a try. I was happy to find several vegetarian options on their dinner menu and very reasonable prices. I had the black bean burrito which was large and pretty good for bar food. My bf had the fish and chips, which he enjoyed but certainly wasn't blown away with. We also tried Bill's brews, which I have to say, I was not so impressed with. They had 3 options, one of which was a fruit beer, and the one we choose had an off taste to it. I can't recommend the beers, but the food was decent, the service was good, and it seems like a good option, particularly for a late night bite.
My family and I visit Cannon Beach occasionally, and we enjoy a relaxed lunch at Bill's Tavern & Brewhouse. The service is usually prompt and attentive, I enjoy the food, and the Columbia River Coffee hits the spot. The clam chowder is habit-forming, but it's available without prescription. As often as weather permits, I enjoy eating on the front patio. Most of my visits were (are) weekend or midweek escapes for my wife and I, but we occasionally meet with others, usually at Bill's, and we enjoy a bite to eat and a glass of cold brew. On weekends, the place is often crowded and it affects service. That's a fact of life.
Regarding the initial review, which I regard skeptically, the reviewer writes that his 2 year-old "wandered the empty dinng room and entryway" and was offended when the owner addressed that issue. Please understand, youngsters should NOT be permitted to wander about restaurants, because it poses a problem to servers who must maneuver around them while carrying hot food and beverages, and it often negatively affects the dining experience of other restaurant patrons. My children are grown now, but I remember the 2 yr-old experience. Very frankly, my children were not permitted to wander about, and I appreciate when other parents maintain control of their children while I dine.
I don't know how tactfully or urgently this priority was conveyed to the parents but, In principle, I have to support the restaurant owner, who was probably patient until it was clear no parental control was being exercised.
Briefly, there are at least two sides to every issue, and I'd prefer to hear the restaurant owner's side of this matter before I see it in a review. I've seen problems in restaurants due to unsupervised children. Can you imagine a tray full of plates and glassware hitting the floor when a server stumbles over a cute, knee-high little munchkin? Not a pretty sight! It poses a risk to the child, to busy servers, and to customers.
At any rate, the food, brew and coffee at Bill's are well worth a visit if Cannon Beach is your destination.
In our most recent visit to Bill's Tavern, everything started off just as planned: the service was good and the food was excellent (some of the best chowder I've ever had). As we were waiting for our check to arrive, our 2 year old son wandered the empty dining room and entryway. A few minutes after making a surprise circuit around the entire restaurant (through the bar area), a man identifying himself as the owner approached my wife and in a rude and condescending manner,he told us we needed to maintain control of our child. In just a 15 second conversation, he managed to imply we were horrible parents that gave birth to a problem child. I've never been belittled like that, let alone as a customer. As much as I love the food, beverages and service at Bill's Tavern, it's going to be difficult to return, especially if I know the owner is present. Families beware.
