Went to the LovEvolution Afterparty here last Saturday.  Didn't plan on going, but the homie said we'd be able to get in for $20 max, and somehow I was the only one who made it in for FREE, while they all paid the full $89 for tickets at the door (heard it was like $120ish last year).  Haha...But yeah, only the 2nd rave I've ever been to and I can't count the first one as a real rave, since Cyberfest 2004 at The Cow Palace was more like a Hip Hop/House music fest vs. an actual rave.  I agree with everyone who said the music lineup wasn't that crackin for this year's Love.  Only DJ's set that I was really diggin was Deadmau5's set from 12:30AM-1:30AM.  We all ended up staying until the end at 4AM though.

They got auditorium seating upstairs.  The main room and 2 rooms on the side that I didn't even bother checking out, but I think they only had 1 other smaller room open for this event.  Then they got the bathrooms downstairs and all them bathrooms were straight up nasty as f*ck from the beginning of the night until the end of the night.  Good thing I didn't have to go #2.  You never want to go #2 at a rave.  Haha!

But yeah, don't really see myself going again, unless I can find a way to get in for free.

TIP:  If someone opens the loading dock, run to the left and go up the stairs from the bathroom bottom floor vs. running straight into a dead end.

Saw a lot of people sneak in through rushing through the front door and just running into the main room.  Saw people run in through the side doors on a couple occasions too when someone from the inside would slap the door open.  And everyone was all dudes of course.  -  This venue has to be one of the easiest venues to sneak into.  They supply their own security, and SFPD just walks the streets around the venue and isn't allowed inside unless some major crime occurs that their security isn't equipped to handle.

$7 for domestic beers.  $8 for imported beers.  $4 for cups of water.  $5 for orange juice.  Then there was a bunch of other random food, clothing, and accessory vendors around the walkways.  They even had the oxygen bar crackin that night.

But yeah, sexy ladies all around, but the Man Jose ratio was in full effect.  Guys be careful with who you try to get down with, cause you might get stabbed if you try to get at the wrong dude's girl...Heard stories of that sh*t happening before at raves.  Haha but yeah...Whatevs...Supposed to be all about the LOVE!

PLUR yall!

I've been to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium endless times! I went here for raves and concerts. I must say, it's a huge and awesome venue! The Bill Graham has got to be one of my favorite venues in sf. I hope my favorite artists will have more concerts here in the future! :)

I'm going to have to agree with Jackie M. on this one... Never again!

So I went to two concerts the night of 5/21... One being Kings of Leon at the Bill Graham, the other being Officer Down at Annie's Social Club. Now I do love Kings of Leon a whole lot more than Officer Down (sorry Ed, but I must speak the truth), but at the end of the night, I realized how much more fun I had at Annie's. And you know why? It's not a huge ass venue, they don't over charge, they don't have huge ass lines for beer, and you can actually move around! Does the Bill Graham have that at all!? I think not!

Ask me to go to a show here when I was in high school and the answer would have been a "yes" without hesitation... Now it's a definite no.

Came here for my first time to see Kings of Leon last night. I came in with a negative attitude due to the fact that about five people told me how horrendous the sound / venue is.  I also have a stress fracture, so I was hobbling around all night in my beloved boot, which is now sticky and smelling of beer/liquor!

Well, I agree. It's a pretty crappy place to have a concert, but it holds around 7k people, so I guess it's a useful venue.   It's more of a place to have a graduation. It's like a gymnasium.  They don't have a bar, so they just use a catering company to serve drinks/food.  I waited in line for about 20 minutes to get a sprite for $4. Good thing we were smart enough to sneak in flasks, especially since it was $9 for a beer or mixed drink.  The bathrooms also suck.  They're downstairs and the lines were taking FOREVER.   The only thing that's cool about BGCA is that it's located right in the middle of the civic center neighborhood and the views are beautiful :)

I hope I don't ever have to frequent this place again. I hope all my favorite bands choose the Warfield over this place from now on!

Great venue for a rave. Like every venue, water and alcohol is expensive. The Bill Graham is huge and amazing, but it's kinda scary when you're walking around and you know that the staff that work there are on something.

First time here was for Kings of Leon/ the Strokes back in 2003.

Last time here was for Kings of Leon/ Bob Dylan in 2005.

See a trend....

The next time I am going here will be in May to see Surprise! Kings of Leon!

This venue is by far one of my favorite bigger venues of the city. It is easier to get to than Concourse, more concert friendly (ie layout and sound) than the Grand Ballroom, and is in a better area than the Warfield.

Bill Graham is a no-holds-bared kind of venue. Anything can happen and, as Jessica T said earlier, anything goes. You may be nearly moshed to death at a Tool Concert. You may nearly fall off the balcony at that same concert because you're too stoned to balance correctly. You may dance in an orgiastic puddle of light, sound and sweaty bodies at the lovefest afterparty and you may be lulled into quite repose as the realization of 3am hits and everything that gave you energy and vigor for the evening (natural or otherwise) suddenly leaves.

This, of course, is not from actual experience. Not at all...

Some people say the acoustics of Bill Graham are shit. I honestly don't remember. I do remember the feeling--the reverberations, the tactile sensations, the music penetrating your entire body and the feeling of the bass in your bones. The light displays at all their shows are unbelievable and I find it so exciting that I can go see a rock concert and go to a massive rave at the same venue.

Anything goes at Bill Graham. It's a world of endless possibilities that may not have the class, intimacy or beauty of other venues, but sure as hell has excitement.

Bonus points for the fact that is has lots of readily accessible bathrooms and LOTS of drinking fountains. You have no idea how important the later is until you've been raving and realize most venues do not have nearly enough water fountains as the Love Fest After party.

This place definitely kicks the cow palace in terms of hosting Love After versus POP.

the only thing i gotta say is why do they not give us water bottles with CAPS? instead now they are giving us paper cups. so more trash? water bottle + caps + paper cups ... don't you think as a safety precautions people should be able to have water bottles with their caps ... in case people do bad things to the water?

but i guess they are trying to reduce the possibility of bottles getting thrown on the stage (ie. Tiesto ended early in July 07 because of a water bottle was thrown at him), but im sure there are tons of other thing people can throw on the stage ...

overall its the place to hold an awesome music party!!! (esp since it ends at 4am, and not 2am like cow palace)

Really spacious venue... but in my opinion, that's not really a good thing.

Interpol was AMAZING when I saw them, but I felt so far away.
Same with Tool, we sat in the seats and I felt like I was at Shoreline or something... so far away. But I was surprised that Tool would play at the Bill Graham, as usually they're in huge arenas and whatnot.

I can't give this place a low rating, after all, I had my high school graduation here!!! =P But aside from that, I've also gone to Tiesto's concert that was held at the Bill Graham Civic back in '07. The sound quality was pretty good, and the venue itself is pretty big. In addition, the view from the balcony is not bad, because it's not too far from the stage. I don't have any complains, but I do have a question. Which weirdo came up with a bright idea that removing caps is required when buying water/soda bottles? No wonder someone spilled water on Tiesto's dj table. Like I said...weirdooo.

Peace.

I'm so confused. I also went to see Kings of Leon on 5/21 and it was like the best concert experience of my life! The Bill Graham is amazing! It's a huge venue that holds tons and tons of people. The lighting is incredible and I thought the sound was really good as well. Seating (... or standing) is first come first serve, so get there early if you want good balcony seats (... or standing place). Bathrooms are downstairs and the people who work there are really nice.

Went to see Kings of Leon - loved the band, didn't think much of the sound or the venue. Other than being central and near my house, the place was not conducive to seeing the actual band, and then the bar service was sooooo slooooowwww and badly organized. Would have expected more, really.

I love bill graham since i started going there back in 01 for skills parties. It's pretty clean usually at the beginning so they do take care of it for the most part. I also like there are balconies to roam around in on the 2nd floor. The auditorium also has alot of bathrooms which are convenient. I also like there is another room instead of the main big one. The view outside is nice too right next to city hall and the park. The parking is pretty good too.

It's a huge venue and the bleachers were nice for when i got tired of dancing and just wanted to drink and eat.  They had lots of food, which was nice... I had the nachos with Extra cheese... i dont trust pizza from booths like that and no one can mess up fake cheese and chips (colorful tortilla chips at that)!!  There were plenty of bars so getting a $12 beer was no problem... But honestly dont they realize if beer is cheaper we would buy a lot more and eat more and buy more water... silly people... Only down fall with the place being so big is its impossible to find people and it gets really smokey after a while.

I wont lie i was a little upset when they took my umbrella away at the door, I mean they said i could get it back but i didnt know where or how, nor was I interested in rummaging through a box of wet and smelly umbrellas after being in a concert for 7 hours!!!!!

They were nice at the door, no intense patdown or bag search which is always nice when u just want to get inside and dance.

I'd say good venue for big bands but make sure you drink before you attend any shows so that you only have to buy a few expensive drinks=)

I came here for the Lovefest after party.  I had never been here so was suprised at the size.  It's huge and easy to kind of get lost on the top floors wandering around.    From the fourth floor I tried to go down these one stairs to get to the bottom, um yeah - no outlets . . .  so I had to go back up and to another way.

But I will say tons of bathrooms, hidden ones too - so even with that many people you can find clean ones.

The main floor was huge and had great sound.  Also the staduim seating allowed me to watch the dance floor, lightening and everyone.  Great facet to it.  Also, lots of other rooms with other stuff going on - just so big so people weren't so stuck and really it was a good venue for the evening.

I love the Bill Graham center!!!  I've been to numerous parties here, and I have a blast every single time!  This is easily one of the best venues in the Bay, if not THE best.  I was here once again over the weekend for the LoveFest Afterparty.  Tickets completely sold out, and I could tell because the place was packed!  I was sitting up on the balcony seats, and the whole main room was packed from the stage all the way back to the entrance.

Girls, girls, girls running around half-naked, several lasers and glowsticks lighting up the room, people just dancing and overall having a great time.  I love it.  I only go to massives, and SKILLS knows how to do it right.  It's funny, because I always run into familiar faces that you see at these parties.  ATB had the best set of the night, IMO.

I agree with Linda L... wassup with the paper cups?  That was pretty stupid.  But later on the night, they let me have a water bottle.  They were obviously just trying to make more money, because they know people didn't want to walk around holding a paper cup.

All in all, I had a great time.  I was with a whole bunch of friends so that made it even better.  We were there from like 9:30-4 AM.  I didn't get home until 7 because we chilled in SF till about 6:30.  I hate seeing the sun come up after a long night of partying. =(  I can't wait for the next one, though!

There are rare moments in life where you feel like you could just die.

Like when a beautiful woman kisses you, or when you taste a really great piece of chocolate cake (you can see how much I value food), the experience is so glorious and profound it carries you away.

On April 9, 2007, Muse performed at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and it was the concert of my life. The sonic flashflood from Matt Bellamy's Frankensteined (yeah, I even made up a word for it) guitar against the relentless backbeat of Dom Howard's drums could raise any man's spirits. Add to that Chris Wolstenholme's thunderous bass, and you can't help but feel a heart-pounding high.

The venue itself didn't detract from the overall experience. We arrived late, and it only took mere seconds to get from the entrance to the action. I honestly can't remember anything else about it, which is more of a good thing than a bad.

Also, I had about five pints of beer before going in.

That always helps.

I like Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - cause anything goes.

It's not beautiful like the Fillmore.

It's never a very intimate show like the Great American Music Hall.

It doesn't have class like Bimbos.

But anything seems to go at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

There are no seats (except for in the laid back Balconey area) and if you don't push you way to the front, you may end up bouncing on bruised toes for hours.

But anything goes at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

It's the kind of place that gets rocked. And that's OK. It's the kind of place that you have room to dance. It's OK. It's the kind of place that forces you to take on a concert 'alter ego' and just smile, eye-lash flutter, and push your way to the first of the stage. Cause...it's apparently OK. The kind of place, that it's OK to sit on the ground, by the far door, because you just want to sit and listen to the music. The kind of place that has a permanent haze about it. And it's always OK.

For most, Bill Graham will be always OK.  Not amazing. Not a nightmare. But OK. And I love that about this place. No high expectations, but I'm never disappointed.

I have been to two amazing shows here.  At both, I closed my eyes, moved, sat down, and suspended everything. I surrendered myself to the music, the laid back energy, and the pervading feeling that...

Everything was OK.

"Don't worry about a thing
cause every little thing is gonna be alright
don't worry about a thing
every little thing is gonna be alright"

Bob-Marley - tribute by The Wailers at the Raggamuffin Festival at the Bill Graham Civic Center, 2006. I recommend getting your tickets now for 2007.

You will not be disappointed.

This is the worst place to see a show. John Lennon and George Harrison could come back from the dead, reunite with the other two, and have a reincarnated Bob Marley opening, and I wouldn't go here to see them.

I can't stand Clear Channel so I will not give this place 5 stars.

I will say that the people here are pros and that they make 8,000 people feel as comfortable as they can.  The large floor must be kinda sucky for shorter people but I don't mind as I am both tall and wide.  The backstage areas are very spacious and the staff is accommodating to the artists needs.  All in all on of the better large places to see a gig in SF.

Hey.

...

...
Oh. Hey. that's right. I'm writing a review.

Where, was I? Oh yeah. Two stars for the contact high at the Manu Chao show.  Two stars for Manu Chao.  One star for the guy who leapt on stage, got naked, and then danced like a completely stoned and wired crazy man. Minus one star for the poor and expensive selection of alcohol. Minus two stars for the terrible acoustics. Plus one star for being so huge. Minus one star for being so huge.

Okay, so maybe this isn't completely fair, but its stadium concert setting. And maybe, just, maybe I'm too old for stadium concerts.  Because it is certainly not about the music. No, concerts at this place is powered solely by fandom.  The more fan energy you have for a song, the less the acoustics and the crowds and the lack of decent alcohol matters.  The less fan energy you have for a song, the more this place will suck.  So, go here if you are a diehard fan of a band. Do NOT go here for the music. I probably will not be back, unless PJ Harvey is booked here. Because I will go anywhere to get a chance to hear her caterwaul in person.

God, i got the munchies...

I was at the Billy Graham (as my friend calls it) last night for the last SF night of Pearl Jam.  While Pearl Jam was AWESOME (eddie guitar surfing and tumbling all over the stage) this venue leaves MUCH to be desired.  I wore sneakers that add at least 2-3 inches and I could not see over anyone.  Especially when the 6 foot 5 guys stood in front of me.  And the guy behind me would "accidentally" crotch-touch my ass.  UMMM...PERSONAL SPACE PLEASE???  So for half the time I was staring at a green t-shirt...scooting closer to it to get away from violator-man.  fun times.  We finally went upstairs, and the sound there sucked!  Plus isn't there some way to make a balcony without the huge pillars?  Maybe put them on the floor?  I dunno.  I know nothing.  This place is huge, with a bad view, and mediocre sound.  Warfield and Fillmore are much better.  However, anything beats Shoreline.

Be aware that it is impossible to get a taxi here without walking to Market Street.  And to those two guys who took my taxi, and the taxi driver who left a girl standing by herself in the middle of scary-ville at midnight, I hope you get erectile dysfunction next time you're in bed.  You suck!

Minus one star for Sonic Youth.
Minus one star for the drunken impatient 6'5" assholes making it so fun to watch the show while jumping for views.
Minus two stars for $12 beers (FU, BG!)

And additional stars for watching a great friends' graduation ceremony there.

I have seen two Live 105 Not So silent night concerts here.....2006 show was a great lineup, while 2007 was a so-so concert.  Its a big venue to see a show but the acoustic really don't work too well at all for a rock show.

For example, being 20 yards away from Angels and Airwaves and the it was almost impossible to decipher what the singer was saying because the Amps were so loud and it reverberated off the walls and drowned out the singing....

In the year 2000...... and 1. This is the auditorium where my high school graduation commencement took place. I remember several schools had back-to-back graduations that day... Lincoln, Lowell, Gallileo... Back then we were allowed to bring noise makers and blow horns, but I'm not sure if schools still hold graduations there.

Anyways, fast forward to May 16, 2008. Swung by here to pick up my Bay to Breakers race packet. Parking was easy, tons of metered spots all around the area. Lots of signs pointing to restrooms on the way to the Expo. Layout of the building is pretty straight forward, just follow the signs and you won't get lost.

Possibly the worst venue in SF.  It's smaller than a stadium, bigger than a club but the sound is terrible.  Not to mention the sound coming from the yacking in the foyer is frickin' annoying.

And unless your over 6' tall, try and show up early to get a balcony seat near the stage, you're not going to be able to see ANYTHING from the floor.  If they did some renovation and made the floor on a slope that would make it so much better, but the venue just isn't my ideal place to see a concert.

If your favorite band mandates that you come see them at this venue, I advise one of the following.

1) Evaluate how much you really want to go. And then don't.

2) If you must go, get there early for a balcony seat and pray some morons do not stand up to do spastic drunk dances during the show.

I am really not trying to be hard on you, BGCA, but for real, this is the crappiest venue with the best shows in San Francisco. It's lacking in intimacy and good acoustics, and for me, it really can't compete with anywhere else. I have talked many people out of going because not only is it a not-good venue, but generally, due to its size, it gets some failr large acts and so charges upwards of $30-$60 in a city where 20 bucks gets you into a classic den of love like Fillmore and a free poster to boot.

Wait til they come back to town and play somewhere else. You will not feel like a fool.

This place has the vibe of a conference hall.  Oh, I guess it's because that's what it essentially is.

Back in the day (1993!) I came here to see Midnight Oil (they put on an awesome show) and the warm-up band was an emerging artist called the Counting Crows who had only just released their first album (August and Everything After) with Round Here getting a little bit of rotation on KFOG.  Adam Duritz rocked the house and more than held his own relative to the indomitable Peter Garrett!

OK, I've been here more recently (late 2000 to see some Widespread Panic with my brother-in-law), but despite seeing my favorite band, this place was still un-remarkable at best.

Convenient to BART is one of this place's only assets.  Being right near city hall in San Francisco, this neighborhood is a dump and can be scary at night.

It's a shame that  Bill Graham -- an icon of phenomenal music and I dare say instrumental to the broader San Francisco history and culture -- has his name attached to such a soul-less venue.

I think I'd only go back here for a show if I had to.

Good venue.

I have had diverse experiences with the acoustics here.  Saw Pearl Jam, Keith Richards, and (somebody else I forgot) here over a span of almost a decade.  Keith Richards sounded like he was playing inside of a tin can.

The last show, Pearl Jam was excellent sound wise.  It was easy in and easy out.  Security for the most part was cool.

HOWEVER - This is the only place in the world that I've ever paid $12 for 1 beer!

Ridiculous.

Since my move here I have made it a point to see several venues in action and have been really impressed. That was until I came here. Don't get me wrong, if you don't mind incredibly simple venues to see a show then this place can provide you with that. There is enough room on the floor level and a balcony level that have decent seating that's a little worn.  The thing that I disliked the most was the sound. It was simply horrible. I may be a little biased working in the music biz  for years but this place sounded terrible. I was going to see TOOL for the first time and I was stoked; then the music started. It was so loud at some points that my jeans were moving from the bass, people were looking at each other like an atomic bomb went off and all I could think was "Holy crap! How much hearing am I losing right now?"

If it's not a rock concert I'd say give this place a shot but I'm not sure if I'll be going back again. Disappointed big time.

Great venue for the Raggamuffin festival last week.  I was almost let down that it was indoor but the laid back vibe inside the Civic center made it ok.  Lots of room to get your boogie on.  Plenty of bars to keep the buzz going.  Ample space for vendors...

I'll be back, no doubt!

the 5 stars are for the AMAZING show Saturday night. I have been following Interpol for years, and was SO excited to go! We sat upstairs for the first Band LIARS. Their sound system sucked, but i think it was because it was set for Interpol and not them. The jumping around lead singer did stage moves like old Mick Jagger. I think they would do so much better in a smaller venue, not here. You really could not understand one word he was singing. When Interpol started playing my bf and I could not stay seated a minute longer and went down stairs to let the energy out. The sound and lighting was fantastic! I could kind of see them, but it was okay to get a glimpse from time to time. To hear them live was fabulous. I had a grin from ear to ear! They were amazing.

Tip: the best place to go to the restroom and get drinks is upstairs. No lines and not crowded.

I hate this place with a passion.

The place is huge, which is great when you need to hold a lot of people, but the sound is utter shit. Unless you are either right up front or upstairs in a seat, seeing the act you paid a ridiculous amount for is nearly impossible.

The last show I saw there was Beck and Le Tigre. Both acts were great, but it would've been nice if I could actually SEE them. Whenever I hear a band I like is playing here and it's their only stop in San Francisco, I cry a little bit.

The only thing this place really has going for it is that it's so close to BART.

Wow - what a dump. Kinda like a big stinky public bathroom.
If you go either stand near the stage or go upstairs and get a seat.
Like my friend said - the great Bill Graham deserves better than to have his name on this giant cement out-house.

So --

I tend to go to a lot of concerts. They're my favorite place to recharge my batteries, and, in a manner totally belying my usual slightly misanthropic nature, make me absolutely enthused with being in close quarters with my fellow human brethren (I think sometimes I'm so tired with work that I eschew typical opportunities for social contact outside my immediate group of close friends -- seems just like too much effort).

Not so with concerts. I look forward to concerts like I looked forward to going to an amusement park as a kid, mentally crossing off the calendar days til the event in my mind. And although I have my favorite venues, I enjoy a pretty damned wide range of different places to see and hear my fave musical artists, from the Fillmore (my fave-o-right smaller place), to the Warfield (though their security is somewhat fascist), to the tiny dive bar Caravan in San Jose, right down the block from the Blank Club (I miss going to downtown San Jo *sigh*) to the camping festival at Coachella that I make my annual vacation each year.

And I like the Bill Graham. It's huge, a "bohemoth" (ha, forgive my gratuitous Reservoir Dogs reference) of a venue, that is perfectly suited for the grandiosity of such big acts as Muse and Audioslave. Those acts did hurt my rather concert-seasoned (read: somewhat hearing impaired) eardrums rather badly, what with the concrete acoustics of the place. But even as I found my ears ringing on the ride home from those concerts, I couldn't deny the frickin' marvelous spectacle of the many lights playing over the huge stage, flashing out to illuminate those sweaty folks pressed together on the concert floor, and the not-so-sweaty concertgoers packing the balcony seats.

I also liked the Bill Graham immensely for the Mars Volta new year's eve show (that witchy pic I have posted is from NYE 2007, just before heading out to the "costume required" show, word), where the MV played both an acoustic AND NYE countdown electric set (over a great range of emotion and melody, from fast to slow, from chill to crazily energetic). The venue was also well suited to their accompanying band the Eternals (from my temporary home of Chi-Town, ya dig) and DJ Peanut Butter Wolf and his frickin gnarly-ass DVD/scratching show.

And most recently, I've had the joy of returning to the BGCA for my second-most favorite annual show (after Coachella, which is my heart, man) -- The Raggamuffins Bob Marley Day festival, which takes place in Long Beach, San Diego, and SF (maybe another city too?) the same weekend every February. I personally love to get my groove on to reggae! And I love to shop at artisan vendor shows; I love to roam around and people watch (and be people watched, ha, yea, you feel me); I love to climb the stairs of the balcony and chill in any seat I want to; I love the calm and giggly chillness that the massive 420 contact high induces in most damned all the concertgoers; I like consistently clean restrooms; I love to drink beer, albeit ridiculously overpriced beer, yea.

And I like to interact with people who are feeling the same vibes I am, and enjoying them just as much as well.

The BGCA is, most simply for me, a feel-good concert venue. Parking nearby, Bart nearby, even cab-friendly. Good times.

I love music almost more than life itself and there is nothing better than going to a live show and totally immersing myself in the pure electricity of creativity.

I went to see Snow Patrol here last week. I gotta say .. this is not the best venue .... its huge ... lacks personality. The bar staff are so miserable and the prices crazy!

There are a few plus's as there are loads of rest rooms and theres lots of space but is it worth it ..??? I so prefer the Fillmore .. i love the Fillmore ..... I enjoyed the show but i think it would have been so much better in a more intimate venue.

I still managed to do a little shoulder shuffling .... just not as much as ususal !
