    Updated - 12/19/2011 80 Check-ins Here

I moved to San Diego in 2007 and was introduced to a contemporary vinyasa style/flow type yoga class in a heated room at corepower from a co worker.  After several vists to core power yoga, I went on google and typed in "hot yoga" ---  The search engine gave me something called "Bikram's  yoga (the original Hot yoga) vs. Hot yoga "--- After reading some of the stuff on google, I ventured into a yoga studio called Bikram's Yoga, College of India near Mira Mesa- Oh my goodness!!! It was the toughest, hardest, and probably the most stinkiest yoga I have ever done in my life, and to top it off, there was no music! -- That didn't stop me from coming back.  Since then, I've been to 5 other Bikram yoga studios in San Diego and by far Bikram Yoga in Kearny Mesa is truly the best.

I'm updating my review because I wrote my first review for Bikram Yoga, Kearny Mesa back in August when I started at the studio, and now it's been about 4 months, and everything I said about this place has been confirmed- just wanted yelpers to know :)   And, this review would be more accurate since I've had more time to get to know the studio.

I live downtown, so I could easily go to the old town location, but I don't because my first week here was pleasant, so I kept coming back.  What sets this studio apart from all the other studios, are the instructors --- They all know your name or acknowledge you especially if it's your first time at their studio, they're compassionate, FUNNY, knowledgeable, and they all take the time to correct the students and sometimes the entire class because they want people to do the postures the right way, so that you don't hurt yourself.    I can honestly say every single teacher here takes the time to do demonstrate when it's needed, and they don't shout at you or call you out if you need to leave the room or take a break. -- They know how it feels to be standing there in the hot room because sometimes the instructors will come in on their off days and take class, so they get it! I've been to other studios where I've not seen one Bikram instructor in class with students... not sure if it's a Kearny Mesa thing.

As I mentioned in my previous review, there's a water fountain inside the studio! Oh my goodness, it's free water in a bikram  yoga studio! Unheard of ! (~.^)v
The patrons here are also very friendly.  I like how the studio is set up because you leave your shoes outside before entering, and that's a yoga tradition they like to follow- keeping things clean.  They have a little clothing and yoga supply boutique inside.  They also have coconut water and kombucha here!!! Kombucha!
Studio is a good size, and they always clean and air out the room as soon as the classes are over, so you don't need to worry about smell.

I know sometimes the complaints about Bikram yoga is... it stinks, it's too hot, it's hard, and the teachers are mean, and whatever else you could think of.  If you step into a BY studio and you're complaing/thinking about these things, I think it's telling you that you need to try Bikram Yoga at Kearny Mesa :)

When you first start off, I would suggest taking classes during different times so you can get a feel for all the teachers.  I know when I take a class from Toni, I always enjoy listening to her spiritual advice and intake on life and how to deal with self control and the mind.  If you want funny, Ray would be best.
If you like straight to the point, Jake is good.  Chelsea, Monica & Joanne are also very technical and fun to take from - they have stories to tell during the savasana break.  If you like a soothing/calming tone, you can take from Michael.  I think there are 3 other instructors I haven't taken from yet, but i'm sure they're just as good!

It's been a pleasant experience so far, and I'm thankful to have found the "one" bikram studio in san diego that I can finally call my "go to" studio since there are so many- By far, Kearny Mesa is the best.

I have practiced Bikram yoga for years and have been to various studios. This review is for the studio in Kearny Mesa, not Mid Town.

In essence, if you are a Bikram practitioner, I would not bother paying the money the studio asks for. It is not worth the poor instruction you will receive. If you are new to Bikram, I encourage you to go elsewhere. Attending this studio may prejudice you from practicing Bikram and that would be a shame.

    Studio:

Small. It also smells. Yes, people sweat. Yes, that is the purpose of Bikram. However, this is the ONLY studio I have been to where the smell is so offensive. It truly makes me wonder if the owners ever clean the carpet. I also wonder if the carpet they use is the best choice. I have been to studios with carpet and wood flooring. Neither stank. Maybe it's the type of carpet? Maybe the studio fails to clean the carpet effectively?

Or maybe the studio should have put more effort into the studio than just keeping it a poorly modified office building! No joke. There was no effort on the owner's part to remotely create a relaxing or inviting atmosphere.

    Bathrooms:

Small. No privacy. No lockers. 1-2 bathroom stalls. 1 Shower. People rush out after class is over just so they can get their stuff and/or use the bathroom/shower. You will inevitably bump into people as you try to change and/or get your belongings.

    Class Instruction:

Keeping the horrible fluorescent lights on the entire time is a horrible idea. Every other Bikram studio I've attended have dimmed the lights a little bit or turned the lights off for the sitting series so that practitioners can wind down. Not here.

The room is not that big. The use of a mic system is distracting and useless.

Some instructors are good. Others are not. I am not a fan of Ray's teaching style. It is as if he is a drill instructor of sorts.

I also do not like Toni. I did not appreciate that she took up class time to speak about other practitioners health problems. I also did not like that in the middle of instruction she would try to correct someone's posture by stating "hey, you in the white tank top. Lower your shoulder." Not only does this distract those who may be wearing a white tank top to see if Toni is speaking to them, but "lower your shoulder" provides zero guidance. Toni should be an instructor and get up and walk to the person and adjust them. As the owner, she should put a bit more effort in her instruction!

Stefan is great. And the girl with the Koi Fish tattoo on her back...I don't remember her name, but I remember the tattoo! They are friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.

    Pros
    1. They're wide variety of sessions can accommodate almost anyone's schedule.
    2. Take advantage of their Introductory Special - $20 for one week of unlimited classes. Offer good to new students only. After you complete your first week, the center may send you a promotional email offering you the 1 month unlimited pass for $99 vs. the original $140 value.

    Cons
    1. It DOES smell like a smelly gym sock. Definitely no doubt about that. I've been to other Bikram yoga centers and this is by far, the smelliest.
    2. Rent a towel for $1.
    3. Only one restroom in the facility; if you can't wait for the person in front of you to hurry up, there are restrooms outside of the center on the first floor.
    4. Saw a student without a mat, just towels laid out on the ground - this is why it stinks. His sweat dripped through his towel and onto the carpet which reminded me of Labyrinth and the Eternal bog of stench.

    Yoga Instructors
    1. Joann - She was straight to the point and got the entire class stretched out. I really like her style. Would definitely want to go to another session of hers but at a different yoga center.

    2. Heather - She really pushes the entire class. Like her style, would see her again as well.

    3. Chelsea - No talking rule is fully enforced which is completely fine because she understands that her students need to focus; however, if you're a new student and you're realizing you were in over your head and want to pull your gf aside and say, eff this, let's bounce - you will be called out. No talking! Also, she kept repeating the instructions for each pose over and over without any type of intonation which made it really boring and hard to enjoy.

    4. Stefan - Definitely has an accent that reminded me of Sebastien from the Little Mermaid. The entire time I wanted to sing, "Kiss the Girl" - you know, shalalalalala don't be shy!

It was definitely hard to concentrate. Not his fault at all but the fact that I was at California Adventure a few days before yoga didn't help my concentration. Stefan also doesn't like it when students leave the class either so if you're dying for thirst, confused on whether you need to use the restroom or straight peed in your yoga gear because you're sweaty as hell, prepare for his sigh of disappointment.  Exit with your head facing down and walk in shame..shame on you.

Tried out Bikram Yoga here after herniating 2 discs in my lower back last year. (MRI verified)  Although I enjoyed the workout, and can definitely give props to Joseph one of their better instructors, I will never return to this studio.

    My Qualm - Instructor Ray
He was rude to me on 3 separate occasions, in the less than 2 month span I attended classes. The third occasion, where he gave me the 3rd degree about a surgery I was going to have in a few days, actually had me leave the studio in tears.

What it boils down to for me is that if I am going to pay a studio around $15-$20 a SESSION for a work out, I expect to be treated with courtesy and a smile.  Also, I should think that if  one has been practicing yoga for 10+ years, as Ray divulged, you'd have an awesome attitude, not a crappy one.

With the exception of Joseph I got the feeling that all the staff thought they were better than everyone.  When you come in they barely can stop chatting with each other to check you in and they act as if you are a bother.

Sorry, but I'd rather go to 24 Hour Fitness where the staff are friendly, helpful and courteous - even if their yoga classes aren't as kick-ass.

I just generally did not  feel hot/warm enough at this stidio....looked around me and I wasn't the only one with dry clothes by the end and I'm the kind of person who sweats drinking a hot beverage. Besides that, I thought it was your average Bikram studio.

    "Grab your ankles. Grab your ankles. Grab. your. A N K L E S!"

I love that this is the what they mantra at you within the first 3 minutes of the class.

It's hot, it's sweaty, it kicks the shit outta ya. You are euphorically exhausted when all is said and done.

This is not the best studio I've been to, and I still don't understand why they won't offer mid-day weekend classes.  Seems a lil unfair college kids and waitresses are the only ones who can take advantage of the 2:30 pm class, as they are only offered Monday through Friday.  They also nickle an' dime you by charging for towels, but they do this at La Jolla and Paradise Valley in AZ.  I guess Old Town is the exception to the rule.

It does the job though.  I recommend practicing on the right side of the room if you want the kinda heat they have at the Old Town studio.

The pricing and the structure of the class are decent. Parking sucks. Not fan of the bright florescent lights while I'm practicing or the mic system they blare out instructions over either. The instruction, length, and challenge of the class are awesome. However, the mere stench of the studio alone will keep me from ever going back.

I read the reviews on here AFTER I attended my first class. My bad, I will never stray from going to Yelp first again. I don't care that all Bikram studios have carpet, as I think I read from someone. Jamming people into a room sweating buckets and dripping on the carpet forever soaking into it, leaves a putrid smell that kept making me lose focus from trying to not to gag from the smell.

So with that being said, if you have NO sense of smell, and no problem dealing with a few attendees that don't understand what personal hygiene is prior to walking into a heated room, you're in for a great practice. :D

I had taken 7 straight 6am days of Bikram 1 yr prior to signing up for a week of Bikram Yoga in Kearny Mesa.  I took my client with me in order to get a good stretch and sweat it out before our Photo Shoot.

The owner is a nice woman once you speak to her.  The studio is located in a shopping center; in the morning there are always open spaces.  You have to walk through those gates on the sides of the building and upstairs to reach the front door.  Be early but not too early because the doors are locked until the class before is over.

My first class was with (Jerry, I think) he seemed to do a good job.  My only true complaint was the awful smell of the carpet.  If you have a gag reflect do not attempt this location.  Luckily I had a clogged nose and could only smell the worst of it towards the end when it began to clear.  I think one must be a little bit of a mosaicist, and feel dealing with the smell is part of the challenge, and therefor force yourself to stay and surrender.  ;)

The lights take a second to get used to especially when lying down.  My second time I introduced myself to our instructor, Eva at the front desk.  She was so friendly and refreshingly joked around with me about the weathermen not having a clue.  Lol.

Her class took a second for me to get adjusted to for some reason that morning but once I did; boy oh boy, was I on point. I felt so connected with my mind and body!  Even though all the instructors basically say the exact same script; Eva was speaking my language to a "T."

The way she described and cued each posture was amazing.  I could truly feel the benefits of each and every posture.  Thank you Eva for my best Bikram yet.  I would definitely recommend your class to everyone.  Oh and the smell of the carpet was not as bad today; so maybe they put down some powder freshener or something.  :)

I practiced here for a few months about a year ago.  While nobody was welcoming or cheerful in the joint, I never witnessed any rudeness during a class from any of the instructors.

I did take issue with the facility, which is the reason for only 3 stars and the main reason I stopped coming here.  The studio is not large enough, they need to limit the number of students allowed per class.  There is absolutely no point in doing yoga if you *can't do the yoga* because you are hemmed in by a wall or to do the pose correctly would result in knocking over another person.  I really resented having my practice reduced to always having to be cognizant of the people next to me just because these folks are too greedy to limit class size or invest in a bigger space.

The locker room is totally unacceptable:  zero privacy, not enough showers or toilets, no lockers, etc.    It is WAY too small, you cannot get dressed without bumping into someone.   I just couldn't take the prison atmosphere anymore.

I really liked the Bikram method and would probably still be doing it today if it weren't for the above complaints.

I bought the Groupon to Bikram Yoga in Kearny Mesa.  It was 10 sessions for $39 and I only went once.  I will say that I'd never done Bikram before, so maybe it would have been better had it not been so hot??  But still.  The room was packed and smelled like dirty feet.  I felt the smugness of yogi's all around me.  That slight judgement.  The knowledge that they are all a) more flexible and b) more adorably dressed than me added to the insecurity.

Anywho, the instructor was kind of abrupt and a bit rude.  I didn't feel that warm, possible pot-head vibe that I get from my other class.  Where you just try your best and she delicately moves you back into position.  This place called you out.  "Lynne!  You're not doing that right."  Oh my gosh!  I was so embarassed!  And the class was 90 minutes.  So, as the wave of nausea set in around minute 17 I just kept thinking, "Oh My Gosh!  There is like an hour and change left!  Kill me now!!!"

Maybe it was the place.  Maybe it's the masochistic idea of doing yoga in a ridiculously hot room surrounded by 60 other people.  I just wasn't feeling it.

Now here's a better Bikram place that the one in middletown.  All Bikram yoga places have carpet so it can get a little smelly, but the one in Middletown made me feel like I was stuffed in a dirty, sweaty, reused sock then shoved in a locker in the middle of the mohave dessert at at midday.

This place is a little small and can get a bit crowded but the front desk people are really nice and helpful and the instructors are very good.

Kudos to Hilary K who pointed out that people keep reviewing bikram itself... we are reviewing the location people, not the sport.  That's like giving the best sushi place in town a 1-star rating because you don't like raw fish in general.  Or giving the movie theater in the Fashion Valley mall 1 star because you watched Sex and the City 2 there and didn't like it.  I'm just saying...

Ok...here it is in a nutshell. Check out a class: $15, feel the heat like you've never felt before, strike a pose....that's right...strike a pose....there's nothing like it!!!!! Loved it! True it's been several years and how great it was to be back .

    Instructors = 5 stars
    Cleanliness = 5 stars
    Workout = 5 stars

    Next visit = membership!

It was intense. I felt somewhat wobbly when I finished and have to admit I was admiring some of the poses that these people could do. I definitely know no-one was admiring me since a couple times my balance gave away. Oh well! the guy next to me let out a stinky and that was enough for me to lose my balance.

Anyways, check it out! You will be glad you did.

I love this place. It is basic but good. I have been to 15 Bikram locations, here in San Diego, San Francisco, New York, Raleigh & Durham NC. For some reason, I keep returning to Bikram Kearny Mesa.
Toni is one of the the best Bikram instructor I have ever had. She really gets it, knows the physical, mental and spiritual challenge we go through and how to encourage forward progress. A newer instructor - Monica is also outstanding. I have been inspired by others also including Heather, Ray, JoJo, Chelsea, Kim (hilarious), Jake, etc.
I know there will be complaints about instructors being bossy or rude or not making people feel comfortable, but honestly that is part of the challenge - pratyahara means withdraw into yourself, concentrate and don't focus on small personal or interpersonal things. Bikram instructors bark like drill sergeants - get used to it.
This yoga has changed my life, made me feel better, think better and connect better. I see other people come to this studio and within 2 or 3 months improve dramatically.
My favorite classes are the late night Monday and Wednesday 830pm - I sleep SO well after them, and they are never crowded.
"if you can't grab your elbows-then grab your elbows"
"Go down! Choke your throat! You aren't choking your throat- do you want me to come over there and choke it for you?"

    Yoga for masochists!

    Background on the reviewer:
    -  Has had minimal exposure to yoga
    -  Spends nearly every day training muay thai and jiu-jitsu (masochist!)
    -  Took a night off from training this night because of constant shoulder/neck pain that wasn't going away with massage and ice.

    Pro's of Bikram KM:
    -  Heartrate was up nearly the whole time (how did that happen while I was standing still?)
    -  Although my relentless shoulder/neck pain stayed with me throughout the class and on the drive home, at some point in the couple hours after class I realized it was MUCH BETTER and at times, not even there!

    Con's of Bikram KM:
    -  WTF IS THAT SMELL IN THE ROOM???
    -  It's ridiculously crowded in there and, as a result, other people's feet are mere inches from your face.
    -  Line in the women's bathroom rivals any downtown club.

    Tips:
    -  Arrive early to squat for a decent spot
    -  Don't expect super sweetness from the instructors.  They know the class is tough and they're there to push you it seems.  I'm fine with that but others may be looking for a lot more "nurturing".
    -  Bring water and like six towels.  I mean one for your mat cuz it'll be slippery and one for your face, unless you don't mind the stranger feet to wet carpet to your towel and then to your face transfer of yuckiness.

Overall, it seems like a great place but I had to dock 1 star for the reaking carpet.

As far as Bikram studios go, this is the BEST place that I've been to.  Ok, ok, I've only been to two, but I like this place better than the one in Old Town.  So, this review is based on a comparison.  Kearny Mesa v. Old Town.

It doesn't seem as crowded (yet) and the facilities seem cleaner (and less stinky) than the location on Hancock St.  The instructors that have led my classes are muy bueno.  They provide good encouragement and do not talk down to you like other places.  There are some good instructors at Old Town (Kirsten and Joe, yay) -- the others aren't so great.

Even though it's an extra 10 minutes to get there (in SD terms, half a lifetime) in comparison to the time it takes me to get to the Old Town location, I'll start making the extra effort.  It's a better vibe and chill attitude here.  There's also more of a focus on self-improvement vs. doing it "our" way.  Isn't that what yoga is about?

I went to check out this place with a co-worker and was pretty impressed by the place.  They have a pretty good website in which they provide you with all the info you need to know.  The prices are pretty straight forward.  We tried the single class drop in for $15, and it was well worth it.

The hot room is pretty spacious and it was pretty hot.  Luckily there were only 5 people in the class so it was not as hot but I assume it will be hotter with more people inside.

They also have two showers so it really helped me cooled off at the end.  I assume there will be quite a wait when more people show up.

I haven't done Bikram yoga for almost 2 years now so by the 10th pose, I was pretty exhausted but I will definitely try to go there again and get myself in shape.

    Namaste.

I got into the whole Bikram thing for a while. I liked that I could sweat a lot and tone up trying to master these poses. It's an interesting form of yoga since you are withstanding such intense heat with a large group of people all in one room.

I liked this location because its a spacious facility (much larger than the Mira Mesa one), good parking, close to home, and they do have some mats that you can use if you forgot to bring yours. The changing room/bathroom is large and clean (compared to the closet at the Mira Mesa location). I do find that the fees are pricey if you aren't committed to coming regularly.

I definitely wish that I was more disciplined to stick with Bikram, but when I do get my lazy ass up - I'll be back there for sure.

I've only been to this studio, but I've done other yogas at other places.  Bikram is fun, this studio is nice, and the price is good, and the room is large, and the instructors are good and have personality and when it's too hot, they realize that and have pity on you and either open the door briefly or turn off the humidifier.  Don't worry, it's doesn't get anywhere near "room temperature", it just doesn't make you want to die.

Lots of times offered, good prices. Yay!

This is the first location where I have practiced Bikram Yoga, and I read quite a few Yelp reviews before deciding to go here.  I have yoga experience, but I am no expert.

The intro week,-Unlimited classes for $20, worth it.  A drop in class is $15.

After my first class, where I thought I might die, I wasn't sure if I would go back.  I wasn't sore after my first class, but I was taking it pretty easy.  I drug 2 friends with me the next time and found that it was easier (mentally) the second time and I was able to at least try all the postures.  The heat and humidity is worth it, I like to sweat so that doesn't bother me, and the blissed out feeling you have afterwards is so great!!

I totally expected to walk into a class full of yoga elitists, but found all different kinds of people, who can do some amazing poses!  The instructors are nice and friendly, and I met the owner Toni today and she was very nice.  This location also offers a good amount of classes, my schedule is hectic, so its very convenient for me.

Yoga is really the only thing that quiets my mind, and I like to sweat, so I really enjoy the 90 minutes of crazy heat and humidity.

Although if they know your name, they might call you out during class if you are not doing a posture correctly..which is good because you need that constructive criticism to get better to get the maximum stretch without hurting your body.

One thing I suggest is to arrive class early and claim your favorite spot because class gets pretty popular and crowded depending on the time of the day. They also lock their door after class starts so random people cannot come in and steal students' belongings. Parking can get a little tricky. I find myself constantly scouting and following people for spots because everyone is looking for parking so they can go to yoga!

I took off one star because I think the facility can be a little better. The classroom itself is fairly large, but the women's changing area is a little small. They only have 2 showers and 1 bathroom so occasionally you might have to be patient and wait.

Overall, my experience here has been great! I know compare to a regular gym, Bikram is a lot more expensive especially if you are on a budget. However, I would still highly recommend anyone to come here and do yoga, even if you do it sparingly like once a week as part of your workout.

I feel SOOO good after a class... not during... but after..

If you've never tried this kind of yoga before- your def missing out. Each class is 90 minutes long and you do a series of 26 poses. The room is heated to 105 degrees. Although I've only done this a handful of times, I can feel how good this is for my body immediately after each class. Taking this also forces you to drink a lot of water. Otherwise you'll never make it through class.

Karin is the best! She corrects you but does it a way that shows her desire for you to get the most out of each pose. The studio is small but super clean.

If rates weren't so expensive - I'd join. But at $1300 for an annual membership, that's a 'lil steep. So I do the random "drop in" classes for $15 each whenever I feel like it.

This is the first place that I ever tried Bikram yoga. I first went in there on Valentines Day, when I was having a kinda bad day.. and I have been going about 4 or 5 times a week since. The facility is tucked away in a strip mall but has a large following. Almost ever class has a Bikram virgin in it, I think the secret is out about this place.

All the teachers are awesome and helpful. I really like Charles, Toni, and Alexis' class, but again they are all great teachers. They will come by and adjust your posture to make the alignment correct. They make you feel welcome and not like an outsider, which to me was very important. I have gotten two friends hooked on Bikram since I have started going to this studio.

The facility is nice and actually quite large compared to many yoga studios. THey have showers and a larger changing room for the women. They also sell water, other drinks, and some yoga attire. They have a great website. They offer a lot of classes too, which helps with m crazy schedule.

I would have given the studio five starts, except sometimes I don't think that the class is hot enough. It should be around 105 degrees, and I can usually gauge how hot is by the time I get to eagle pose, if i'm not that sweaty its not hot enough. I like to have a really hard class, and i find that when its not hot enough, the class is too comfortable and I'm not challenging my mind and body enough.

Everyone should try Bikram at this studio. Its great!

    Namaste

    DISGUSTING and DISTURBING
I really like yoga, and I like hot yoga. This place is awful. Have you people never been to nice yoga studio in your life? So many dislikes, where do I begin?
    1) Leave your shoes outside of the facility in the strip mall walkway? How ghetto, No I'd like to leave my shoes inside the establishment, maybe even in a locker please.
    2) Crowded (630pm on a wed) and there were just a lot of sweaty people lingering all around in the lobby and locker room. No one helped direct anyone and the locker room was super crowded too. Why have people sign up on line if you're just going to smush sweaty people in a stupid office suite anyway? There was not enough room to move your arms.
    3) Locker room-small, crowded and nothing I'd want to shower in.
    4) The room-SMELLS from the minute you walk in. Like old sweaty hot carpet. CARPET?? Disgusting, why would you do this on CARPET? Maybe because it's nothing more than an old office suite, old (probably asbestos) ceiling tiles and all. The stench is really gross and lingered with me well after the class was over. My mat was sweaty on the bottom when I rolled it up (GROSS).  Not my imagination, people were leaving sweaty spots on the carpet.
    5) Bright-To round off the smelly office suite feel, the fluorescent light are on full blast the whole time. I get that this is not your meditative yoga but c'mon, office lighting?
    6) The instructor (Ray)-is really more of a salesmen that uses his Britanny Spears headset to rapidly spew out the directions like a yoga auctioneer, never showed you the pose and said nothing of breathing. He was so annoying, and yammered about pointless crap through the entire savasanah until I wanted to sit up and say "SHUT UP".
    7) Potentially dangerous-I know they say "beginner" but I would highly recommend everyone take any other yoga class first, learn to breath properly (essential and entirely left out of this class), know your body's limitations and stop and drink water (class paused once in 90 mins for water!).
Oh and this class was free for me, and I'm still not going back. I'm sticking to downtown studios.
As for Bikram, I still prefer Vinyasa Flow and something a bit more calming but I found the practice challenging but doable and potentially enjoyable in another setting. I also felt really good after and the next day. Nothing like a good sweat.

I switched to this studio based on its Yelp reviews, and have been happy I did so.  I have to admit, it weirded me out after my experience at Old Town that I didn't get told off -- at all. (A studio I left after a teacher STOPPED CLASS to yell at me for wearing pants.  "NOD YOUR HEAD IF YOU UNDERSTAND ME. DO YOU HEAR ME?" was part of his solilquy.)

For the record, after hearing how hot Old Town was in relation to this, I thought it would be a breeze. I've had the hardest classes yet here, and have gotten way more corrections/personal attention than anywhere else.  So, for those of you flipping reviews between various SD studios, know that Kearny M holds its own in the heat department.

So yeah, this Kearny Mesa thing is trippy.  The instructors are professional but pleasant, they make sure you can see yourself in the mirror, and they even smile.  It's almost like they want me to *enjoy* my Bikram yoga.

    The nerve! :)

Good Bikram Yoga spot.  I'm not avid...have really only done it twice in my life.  So, take my recommendation with a grain of salt.  ;-)  BUT, this studio was clean, friendly, supportive...when I do go again, I'll be back to Bikram's Yoga College of India in Kearny Mesa.  My first experience was at another place that I haven't yet Yelped...and it will be getting only 2 stars....because it was dank, a bit stuck up, and seemed a little gross on the floor...

SO....if you haven't tried Bikram and are wanting to, I'd start here....at Bikram's Yoga College of India, freeway close in Kearny Mesa!

My hair stylist told me about Bikram.  I signed up via their website (super easy to use btw) and came in for a class in the 105 degree room.

For a mere 20 bucks you get unlimited classes in a 7 day period.  If you want to join, they'll offer you $99 unlimited one month special as a new student.

Karin is by far the best teacher I've had there.

The staff is not super friendly, that or I just don't fit in with their elitist, yoga puritanical views.

The carpet is funky smelling but you get used to it.

    I'm now a regular student.

This facility is affiliated with Bikram Yoga College of India located on Hancock in Old Town. Class content, amenities, pricing and staff disposition are identical. This location however, is considerably smaller which can hinder your ability to fully express a position.  Additionally, the slight but noticeable stench at the Old Town location is a bit more prominent at this location.  In the words of Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - "Clean your shorts!"

Hey Everyone:  I wrote a bad review on this studio about a month ago.  ALL is forgiven.  I went again this morning, becuase I missed my usual 6:00am class in La Jolla and I was desperate.  The bad smell is gone completely.  The yoga instructor, Joanne, was amazing.  Very professional, and great energy...not rude.

    Thanks Kearny Mesa for listening!!

Can everyone please stop reviewing bikram's yoga and actually start reviewing the studios? ALL bikram studios smell like stinky feet to some degree.

That said, this studio is ok. The only really good thing about it is that Joseph teaches here and he rules. Also, I like that they list the instructor schedule on their website. Other than that I have had some really boring instructors and also I don't like that there is not a window. The location isn't my favorite either (near 'adult books' and other seedy looking places) but it is convinient that it is right off the freeway.

I prefer the old town studio but if this one is really close to your house it might be worth it.

Highly recommended.  This place is hard core!  Don't go if your not ready for a serious workout.  90 minutes nonstop in a room heated to 105. Be ready to sweat out EVERYTHING you have had to drink in the last year.  The trainers were very nice to new people and made me feel welcome.  The rest of the staff and guests were great as well and the whole place has a positive vibe.  The place is very clean.  There is a bit of the smell in there but what else could you expect a room filled with 30 people doing yoga at 105 degrees?  Afterward, I felt incredible for the rest of the day and ready to tackle anything.  Just go but bring at LEAST 3 towels with you and tons of water.

    Going back tonight!

Maybe I should have known when I signed up and picked up a attitude from the instructor.
I just moved to SD from Sacramento about 3 weeks now. Moving and a new job have been stressful and I couldn't wait to get some time to take a Bikram Yoga class and release all this energy trapped in my body and mind. I went to my favorite website "YELP" and they pointed me in the direction of Bikram's Yoga College of Kearny Mesa, had great reviews so what the heck, I jumped in my car set the telenav on my blackberry to their address. I liked the studio, it was clean and not smelly like most hot yoga studios. The heat in the room was cool for a Bikram Yoga class, I tried to check the heat when I left but couldn't find it .

Reason for my negative review was the instructor which now I come to find out is the owner, Toni. She asked me during the class why I wasn't doing a certain pose I said my back hurts, she said why. I tried to ignore her because I don't discuss my personal health information with a room full of complete strangers. She didn't let it go and asked again, I shot her a look that a socially conscious person would understand to quit. She said my name a couple of times but by than I tuned her out. She than proceeded to, what I feel pick on me and say my name several times during the class. I would just not acknowledge her and I would think Toni would understand the social queues and boundaries she had already crossed. But she just doesn't get it.
I wanted to leave so bad but I really wanted to finish my poses and leave and never come back. I didn't want to fill negative the rest of the day because this person has a complex or something.

I so appreciate my former yoga studio Yoka Loka in Sacramento and how spiritual and knowledgeable about Bikram and his teachings.

This location has fabulous instructors. They respect your choices and let you move at your own pace. They encourage you, not push you. The room seems to be set at a good temperature. It's not as hot as the Olde Town location and they speak to you like humans, not "blue shorts" etc. as the latter does. They had updated their locker rooms so they now are attractive. They still only have two showers and don't provide towels. I always laid down halfway through in Olde Town because it was so hot! One day I hope to try their studio again... but for now... Kearny Mesa is only a ten minute drive from University Heights... and to be able to actually look forward to class... is a great gift.

Now before I put my ever so worthwhile opinion in on Bikrams Kearny Mesa, let me say this....I don't know shit about yoga. Ive done it a few times, but I know as much about yoga as the general American public knows about the war on terrorism.

That being said, I decided to give this place a try as a part of this "I'll try anything once" kick I've been on. While during the class I was actually contemplating suicide with a seriousness that I haven't had since I was 16 and my high school boyfriend broke up with me, after I can say that I honestly felt amazing. I felt like a sweaty stretch Armstrong. Since the first time I went (about a month ago) I have been back a few times a week. The instructors are compassionate, obscenely knowledgeable, patient, and truly want to see you achieve higher levels in your practice (and YES, yoga is most certainly a practice). Every posture has a purpose and the (intentional) heat helps free your body of toxins and increase the depth of flexibility. It is very difficult but most certainly worthwhile. If you go with an open mind and a commitment to stick to the class, you can gain some amazing benefits physically, mentally and emotionally. My road rage has been so in check since I started Bikrams. I have only had to regulate on one sucka. You know why? Because I found peace at Bikrams Kearny Mesa.

    Namaste fools.

I came here for a class with a couple of my girls on dance team and wasn't a huge fan.  The facility was nice but I wasn't a fan of their customer service by any means.  I also didn't like that for the first half of the class, the instructor would not stop rubbing in the fact that we had gotten to class late, and her voice caused more anxiety in me than relaxation.  We had apologized like none other, too!!  Then when we were leaving and I said I didn't want to do the unlimited week for $20 package, the guy said, "Oh, so you're not coming back."  Ummmm, yeah.  Don't know how to respond to that.

I went to this studio for the first time last night and had a great experience. I would recommend this studio to anyone. The instructor was very helpful and not militant like the instructor at the old town studio is. The kearny mesa location is convenient, clean and very reasonable priced with all of the amazing benefits of bikrams.  I will definitely be back and buy a monthly membership.  Also, if your under 25, you can buy a month for only $110!  What a steal!! My ass will be thanking me :)
