I don't give out 5 starts lightly, but Bike Nüt earns it hands-down.

It wonderfully spans the range of producing gorgeous $15k masterpieces of weight weenie genius to repairing your average commuter special.  Indeed, the monster tire work bikes the shop keeps outside for local use says a lot that their love of bikes spans the range from work-bike cargo hauling to boutique bikes.  And if you have a fixed budget, they'll do an excellent job of optimizing the package based on that total.   They really know and love bicycles.

On the latter end, if you want high end lightweight parts, there's no better place this side of Arizona.  Anyone who's a bike geek should make this a mandatory stop in San Francisco.

But don't pass it up if all you need is a wheel trued or a tire replaced, either.

This place is like a strip joint only with bikes. You go in there and know you really can't afford the merchandise and are just there to gawk and look. Luckly its not open late-night when you had a few too many and credit-card on you..If it were I'd be waking up hung-over with an expensive "how-am-i-gonna-explain-this" to the wife situation.
It has every conceivable best-of-category bicci item that you can think of and more. Check out their modified and stripped down Giants with the uberlight set-ups (UCI would shut this place down if it could). Unlike some off the yelpers below I found the staff to be super knowledgeable and not snooty at all.
But with the pretty comes the pricey. These guys must be getting hit hard by Mr. Landlord because lordy is everything expensive. From the basics to high-end expect to take it in the end. But hey, that's the Marina for ya.

this is a great bike shop!  they are the best fitters (if that's a word) in the city.  they are never pushy but always knowledgeable and i always end up staying awhile and chatting with them when i go in for something. if you buy a bike here they fit here and take care of you for a year including stem swaps which is great.  they carry mostly high end stuff and carefully pick their merchandise.

young alex will hook up all your bike needs.

I recently bought my Cervelo from these guys. I give this rating because the process was easy, I got a good deal, and the staff is really good.

When buying a bike at this store, you get a pro fit that takes about 2 hours and ensures that the bike really works with you. I have never gone through that process before, and I now a believer. I have ridden bikes my whole life and did not think I needed anyone to tell me how to fit myself to a bike. I was wrong. Sure, you don't need to fit your Huffy $150 bike, but you would likely have a better experience if you did. But I now understand that if (whenever) I am going to drop some hard earned Gs on a bike, it pays big to get that bike fitted by a pro. I have worked on my bikes forever, and trust my work for most issues over almost any one else, but I decided to submit to the process and let these guys tell me what to do. I let them be the guides. I listened as they talked a little slower (since I clearly needed to have concepts explained!) and I never felt like they were overly pushy or condescending. They sell bikes, so it is their livelihood to SELL bikes and product, so it does not bother me to be sold to.

The guys in the shop, also very solid. I check the work of anyone who touches my bike and like to get them to explain what they have done, so that I don't have to wonder if my ride is safe when bombing down a road or trail. They know what they are doing.

For sure, Kevin, the fit expert, made a convert of me.  I have heard from people, other than the store's employees, that he is very good at what he does. My experience with the fit process leads me to believe that is the case. Overall, it was the  time spent on the fit, in addition to his customer service made me a fan of the shop.

I will update if the after-sale experience colors (positively or negatively) my impression, but so far, so good!

One star because they are knowledgeable. Another star for the blonde haired kid (Peter?) who is a super nice guy and very helpful. I hope the owner recognizes how cool the kids who work for him are. Another for good bikes.

The owner, Hussein came across a bit strong both times I went there. I actually heard him shouting at his crew "we're going to sell a lot of bikes today, let's move!" Or something like that. right in front of me. It was too much. It gave me the impression that he was more concerned about sales than bikes, although I could be wrong.

This review is strictly based on service/staff interaction and does not encompass the buying experience or the bicycles on hand themselves.

I stopped in during my trip from Boston because I'm a huge fan of visiting bike shops when I'm out of town. I ran into a couple of employees there that I sparked up a conversation with and were nice enough to spend the rest of their afternoon past closing time chatting about San Fran and the area with me. Very friendly, very helpful staff who even wrote down some info for me and broke out maps to discuss neighborhoods. How many shops do you know that will chat with you when you're not only not spending money, but will chat with you about things outside of the bicycle world too. Good vibe and good guys.

You'll have to decide if they carry what you need or the right accessories, but the staff component is solidly there and that goes a long way. Happy to give them a big thumbs up from Boston.

Bad attitudes and no knowledge. I worked at shop for many years, and I would have been fired if I talked to and customers, or even people just browsing the way that these people talked to me. It was amazing how I came in just poking around and got a bunch of attitude. Then I came in with my bike, they saw I spend money on nice bike parts, and all of a sudden they want to talk to me. I asked the to do a some custom service on a part for me, and they looked at me like I was out of my mind. The only reason they get 2 starts from me is because they have a lot of the nice weight weenie parts, even though they are WAY overpriced.

I went down the street to city cycle (?) and they were so helpful! They helped me with everything, didn't overcharge me, and they were friendly. Isn't that what is wanted in a bike shop?

I will never go back to this shop again.

I can't believe that I haven't yelped this place sooner!

My wife needed a bike.  Something good for the city, but light enough for long rides.  We didn't want to spend a fortune.

Bike Nut is the answer.

Insane customer service.  Switched out the seat three times to find one that she liked.  Adjusted every inch of the bike to fit her perfectly.  Treated us as if we were buying a multi-thousand dollar bike (we were not even close to).

As with any great business passionate employees make all the difference.

Last autumn, I had an urban rite of passage I had been hoping to never face.

My beautiful Bianchi bicycle was stolen from my BART station.

Ever since seeing Bicycle Thief, I knew it was inevitable.  I had been biding my time very nicely, however.

What a deflating feeling, to come off the train to see a big VOID where my bicycle had previously been parked.

Oy.

Well, they say you don't really own a bicycle, you only rent one.

But isn't that said for Beijing?

I was then faced with the daunting task of purchasing a new bicycle.  Not as easy as it seems.  First, I wanted to get a bicycle that was as close as possible to my stolen beauty.  I was tunneled visioned.

My generous father offered to purchase the new bicycle, and I was put in charge of calling around.  So I did.  I yelped bike shops and called quite a few.  It was the point in the year where inventory was low to make way for the 2009 models.  After trying my luck at a few shops, I called Bike Nut and spoke with Huseyin, the owner.

I was struck by his calm voice, which also explained to me that he did not have what I was looking for in stock at the time, but that I could come in and special order from Bianchi, and in the meantime he could lend me a loaner bicycle to get around.  Quite the nice touch, icing on the cake.  This seemed like the best lead so my father and I went in the following weekend to talk bike with him.

When we got there he remembered every detail from our conversation and before we knew it, we were ordering a brand new Bianchi Brava that was due to come in within a month.  He let me take home the loaner bike on good faith.  He outfitted me with some beefier anti-theft devices, and threw in a seat change gratis.

A week or so before the bike shipped in, he and Alex phoned a few times to let me know the status and to schedule a time to come in.  Everything about this shop and its customer service is perfect.  If you are ever considering a high end bicycle, definitely check in with Huseyin and Bike Nut.

When you do, go for all the locks and chastity belts for your bicycle.  It will hopefully save you some heartache.

I went into this shop looking for replacement tires for my bike.  They suggested I should buy the top of the line tires for my beat up old bike.  $60 dollars each.  Then they realized that I knew you could get a good tire for $25.  The salesman started doing salesman stuff, "I'll knock off five bucks if you act now " tactics.  Oh you're not interested, how about ten bucks.
I like it when stores sell things for fair prices. If $60 is fair, then sell for $60.  Once you start discounting things on the spot the whole pricing scheme is suspect.
They did not offer let me look at the tires offered, they just brought them to me from a back room.

I dis-enjoyed my treatment at this shop.  Maybe it's just too high end for a commuter like me.

+4 for great service
-1 for typical Marina prices

So I couldn't let myself buy a new road bike as I don't like getting raped. I finally succumbed to craig's list and found a great deal. Test drove the bike last night and it went perfectly.

True to form, as soon as I handed over the cash and drove off the bike crapped out on me. I have been dying to ride a bike in the city and I have no patience. Therefore, I wanted to get this bike fixed STAT. I took it over  to Bike Nut at around 2:30 and spoke with Peter who, was extremely helpful. I am completely biketarded and he was definitely helpful in finding out what was wrong.

Cut to two hours later and my bike is in perfect working order!

Now to get one of those pesky helmets...

I didn't buy my bike here, but was most impressed by the friendly help.

Bike Nut sold out of the 2008 Giant FCR 3.0 bike I was considering (significantly cheaper than the 2009 model), but Alex actually offered to swap parts between the 2008 1.0 and 2.0 so I could get a  good deal nonetheless.  He didn't pressure me to accept the deal immediately and let me get back to him the following day.  When told I couldn't afford the bike, he threw no prissy hissy fit and just said he'd be happy to offer his services in the future.

Thumbs up for that good experience!

One of the best shops I have ever been in. A complete "pro" shop.

I typically ride about 6000 miles a year on my road bike. I have bought two bikes from here and Huysein "the crazy turk" has always led me in the right direction.

If cycling is something that you take serious, then this is the place for you!!!!!!!!!!!

My time at the Bike Nut was brief, but very positive overall.  I just recently bought a bike (yessssss it's pretty rad.  I named it Bullet.  It's silver.  And fast.  Get it?) and it needed new inner tubes.  So off I went to the Nut, and the staff was super helpful.  The bikes inside looked, and were, really expensive, but you could tell they were all top of the line.

I know nothing about bikes, racing, or any of that stuff.  I just wanted my inner tubes.  And I got them.  And now Bullet goes faster.  Hooray!

I'll def be back when I decide to man up and buy a new seat.  Which should be later this week.

Needed tuneup for Bianchi roadbike before a century and had some crank noise. They diagnosed bad bottom bracket and cracked crank. That plus tuneup came to $305 estimate, seemingly steep but I had no time to price shop so let them go with it.

After a week got a call that they ordered the wrong bracket, but had another "correct one" in stock, but for $85 instead of quoted $35. Said they'd give me a "deal" on it for $65. I told them to reorder the $35 part and try to get it in before I needed it for the ride. Got another message couple days later saying they'd gone ahead and installed the more expensive part.

When i went there to pick the bike up, they would not admit to the basic fact, which is that they had 2 weeks to fix the bike with the parts and at the price originally quoted, but failed to do so and then wanted me to pay for their error. After hearing excuses about "needing to keep the lights on" and realizing they were not willing to back up their orginal estimate, I walked out, paying the higher price and vowing not to go back there. Suggest you save yourself the uncertainty and avoid any such switcheroos by taking your bike to a place that will work with customers and live up to promises.

UPDATE: these guys are the BEST!!!! I have had a Cervelo P3 for 1.5 yrs now, always seemed to be fussing with the mechanics (seat moves on you, back tire will rub if torqued, etc). After 1-day, the team fixed everything...been riding it for the last month and it is better than when i first got it. They fixed the big and small things, and the cost was extremely fair. Can't recommend them more highly for new or ongoing needs.

I had a terrific experience here...firstly, the selection is awesome. Not so much for the quantity, but what is there is the very best. I was amazed that all of the "best in class" things seemed to be in stock (Assos F1 bike shorts, great tubular's, etc).  secondly, the owner is one of those people that really takes an interest in your needs. I went into the store looking for a bike horse, and came out with a great bikehorse from Topak, as well as a top from Assos that is perfect for SF weather, new tubulars, and some excellent info on everything from carbon fiber design to fixing a flat in notime.

What amazed me even more was the owner's willingess to discourage a purchase that didn't make much sense in hindsight. I was thinking about a new seat, and he talked me out of a foolish in-the-moment purchase in favor of doing some more exploration.

We're lucky to have his shop in SF!

I walked into this shop and expected it to be very very expensive.  They have lots of nice bikes hung up on the walls including Litespeeds.

However, I found that after dealing with them over the course of the past week, not only are they very reasonably priced, they are also very knowledgeable and extremely flexible.

Having been born and lived in San Francisco, I have visited just about all the bike shops in my neighborhood.  I was referred to Bike Nut by the seller of a Bianchi San Lorenzo who told me to go to Bike Nut for a shorter stem, which I needed.

I went there and was very impressed.  Guess I'll talk about it like a restaurant review, better to understand why I was so pleased.

Firstly, it is easy to get to Bike Nut.  The shop is strategically located near Lombard Street, which is the main route to get to the Golden Gate Bridge.  Since it is near Pacific Heights, Marina District, Russian Hill and Nob Hill it is easy to bike to the shop from anywhere in those parts.

Since Bike Nut is on a side street off a main drag, parking is easier to find than in other parts of town.  Of course, if you bike there, parking is not an issue.

On arrival I noted the shop is nicely decorated, clean, and easy to navigate.

On entering the store/shop the accessories and mods are at the front, which is too bad because it is easy to drool and end up unloading a lot of cash when you first walk in.  Bike Nut stocks all the high end stuff, things we want.

When arriving I saw that there were four people working.  The owner and three worker bees [sales and mechanics].  I was assaulted by an employee within about 10 seconds of arrival, him asking how he could help me.  He then took care of my request and the owner overheard our conversation and started to assist with the stem exchange.

I then said that the bike had trouble shifting on to the largest chain ring [going into third, so to speak].  The owner grabbed the bike, put it around his neck via the seat, and proceeded to make adjustments.  For this the owner did not charge nor even suggest there might be a charge.

I asked about getting a fitting for my new bike and the owner said it was $60.  I made an appointment.  Today I went in for the fitting and I could tell that the owner knew his stuff.  He even gave me tips on how to improve my spin [peddling].  And because he felt I needed another stem, he changed the stem to one with a taller rise.  The stem he installed was an upgrade and he did not charge me for it.

He then checked the bike over and said to bring it back when his mechanics were on duty [they are off on Mondays] because the bike needed a new front brake cable since the one that was on it was a little spongy.

While he was doing the fitting we engaged in some small talk.  I asked him some specifics about Bianchi's U.S. sales efforts and he spouted out all kinds of info indicating that this guy knows his stuff, especially about bikes and the specifics of the various models.

Bike Nut is a great shop.  I have gone to other shops and they can't compare.  For example, I went to one shop on Van Ness for a tuneup on one of my Bianchi bikes.

The staff were cold and impersonal.  They acted like I was an intrusion.  In fact, when I paid the $100 bill there was not so much as a thank you for my business.

That shop is closer to my home on Nob Hill, but I will never go there again.  I will go to Bike Nut.

A bit small but by far the most exclusive selection in San Francisco. They specialize in Giant bikes and have a few Storck and other rare bikes on the floor. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and will spend the time to explain to you the best bike for your personal budget and needs. I feel confident to make my next top dollar bike purchase at this store.

Horrible experience.  I was looking for my first road bike after mountain biking  for years.  While I'm no bike expert, I know enough to hang with most bike junkies.

I went in knowing my price range and roughly what specs I want... a midlevel mainly aluminum bike (a carbon fork and stay would be nice) that I can commute to Marin on, use for weekend rides and NEVER race.  The dude first shows me a bike two steps lower than what I want, has me take it on a test ride... don't know why as it's nothing like what I want, but whatever.  He doesn't fit it at all, just throws me on it.  It sucked.  I come back and then he brings out another bike... a full carbon totally out of my league bike.  Again, nothing like what I want.  I'm about to walk out but he insist I try it out... spends 10 minutes talking out his *ss as he fits it to me.  I road around the block, dropped it off and will never step foot in that shop again.

When I was leaving he asked what was wrong with it and biting my tongue told him that I found a bike that fit better (at Bike Odessey in Sausalito=awesome).  The guy asks what it was and I told him. He proceeded to tell me that he used to race that bike but he found that it "chattered" (didn't hold the road well) when decending around sharp turns.  Again, why the hell are you tell me this? Did you not hear me say I was using it primarily for commuting and lesuire rides and NOT racing?

Decent selection of Giant bikes but horrible, horrible help.  The guys just make general "this is the best" statements about everything with no justification.  Advoid this place unless you know EXACTLY what you want, then show-up, point at a bike and get out... don't let these guys open their mouths.

More than one person recommended this place for a tune up.  They must have received thorough service of their bikes and/or nice help.

For $90 plus for a basic mountain bike tune up plus new brake pads, I expected the gears to shift smoothly, or at least more smoothly than they shifted before I brought the bike in to the shop.

The first visit, the man to whom I entrusted my bike was condescending.  I got the sense that since I wasn't a pro biker, he did not have time to consider why I brought my bike to them.  The front shock was needing maintenance, he declared it impossible, and showed me a road bike to buy instead.  When I picked up the bike, the shock was pumped with air, but not locking out.  Again, he declared it a miracle that it could even have air pumped in it.

So I took to the bike to the shop in Sausalito where I purchased it several years ago.  The tech there knew the brand of bike very well and for  $60, bled the air from the shock, re-pumped it, and it works.  I guess you'd have to know the shock engineering to know to "bleed"  the air first. Whatever, but it cost an extra $60.

Then, I went on a long ride weekend and find that the gears don't shift smoothly or at all on the outside most gear.  So I finished my ride at their shop Sunday afternoon.  The owner happened to be the one who helped me and understood.  On his re-tune form he wrote "MAKE BIKE WORK" and "Test ride torque".  Why not test this as QA the first time?

I picked it up last Friday afternoon.  The original man got it for me and was still just a j-rk for no good reason.  Maybe he'd be nicer if he knew I wanted the bike in good working order so I can ride it to work 4 days a week.

I put two stars because the shop did a second, focused tune up that is good.  But for a $5 bridge toll, I think you'll get many times that in return with competent, enthusiastic guys at the bike shop there by the highway entrance.

The Bike Nut is THE best bike shop in the Bay Area.  OK, I haven't been to every bike shop in the BA but enought to know that these guys (a) know their bikes and (b) are not stoners who can't remember what they said they were gonna do to your bike.  I've never received anything but consistently excellent service and support.  They really listen to what YOU want and then find you a good mix of components to do what YOU want.  Also, the bike fitting is exceptional -- best in class.

As a cyclist who's worked at various bike industry companies, I am very particular about shops I give my business too.  I know my stuff, so when I feel as if I'm being talked down to as some "knob" off the street, I never give my business to nor return.  I get better service via the mail order companies.  So, on a whim...when I stopped into the Bike Nut to check out what they had, I was immediately impressed.  A shop with a good selection of parts and hard to find components says a lot, and Huseyin, the owner is very methodical in explaining to it all to you.  30 mins later I walked out with a new M5 brakeset.  They turned it around same day, which they made an exception for to which I was greatly appreciative.  A few days later I purchased a vest, a fews days after that I got a Garmin Cadence sensor for my 305.  Most shops would simply say "We don't carry that" and that's it.  Bike Nut offered to order it for me and I had it a few days later.  So it's with no surprise that when a friend was looking for a new road bike, that I recommended Bike Nut.  Within an hour he was the proud owner of a Bianchi 928 w/ Record.  I've been in a lot of shops and there are 3 things I can't stand:
1) Bike shop employees who think they know more than you
2) Bike shops with limited or no inventory
3) Bike shop employees that think they know more than the product folks at the bike manufacturers.

The Bike Nut is an excellent shop that borders boutique without the pretentious vibe that other lesser shops in the area tend to give.

My only caveat is the parking in the area, the marina area in general is the worst.  But this just allows me to ride there instead of driving.  My only other caveat is I wish they had an espresso machine so I can hang out there after a good ride.

I got a new bike here recently, and it was a great experience. I went in with a friend who was a customer and they dropped a lot of money from the ticket price because of it. Also gave me 15% off all accessories, so I got some simple lights, and a nice u-lock. Told me to bring it back after a month of riding for a free light tune up. I am not a hardcore cyclist, but coming from someone who wanted a decent road bike for commuting around the city, I couldn't have been happier.

Needed some work done on two bikes two days before a bunch of triathalons.  No waiting and no hassle.  The guys were very cool.  I kinda felt like I was in Germany or something.  Must have been the accents and  dark clothing.  The only thing missing was some techno.  Now we dance sprokets!  I will be going back!

This is an amazing bike shop. A much, MUCH better shop than City Cycle around the corner. The owner, Huseyin is a genius and his knowledge of bicycles, and how to enhance the performance of a bicycle is second to none.

As a cyclist, I love the massive plasma screens he has above the shop that show cycling videos all night long. Force feeding our sport to the marina. Atta boy!

The only reason im not giving it 5 stars is because i went into the store to change my pedaling system and in doing so  i really wanted those pedals that are two-sided (one side clipless and the other not clipless)
After illegally parking, and bringing my bike inside the shop,  the help showed me and successfully convinced me i would be leaving with shimano clipless pedals which are  two sided and can be clipped into from either side.  This was all made up for by the fact that the help took the time to put my bike into a stationary trainer, demonstrate clipping in and out, and then commanded me to kick out and straddle about 50 times.  This really helped.   maybe i just like being commanded to straddle, ew! Anyway since then I have only fallen twice, both due to my own lack of attention and tiredness.
plus the bike shoes i also purchased are super cute. and functional.  even though the selection was minimal. sometimes you get what you need.

Huseyin rocks. 5 star service, 4 star gear selection. Best place in the city for a tune up and if you don't need one, he'll tell you honestly. I had my old bike tuned up there and it rode like brand new. I just got a new, used bike and took it in.  He inspected it with the same care a doctor would use to check out a patient. He listens to it shift, looks at the alignment, feels the chain. Prognosis, no check up needed. But I will go in for a bike fit, only $70, and I know it will be done with the same care and attention.

He just expanded to the space next door, but I know he'll need a bigger space soon!

If you need help and some advice there isn't a better bike shop in the city! Huseyin is the most knowledgeable and honest person you could ever talk to about biking. You won't get any attitude in this place and they have the best costumer service! THEY JUST REALLY CARE! If you're one of those people intimidated by passionate people (like some reviewers below) then maybe this isn't the place for you. But if you're like me and appreciate talking to humans instead of drones, then go to this place to buy your bike! They will be honest and steer you to a bike you'll love that won't be overpriced!

Went in to check out some road bikes. The owner is WAY too intense. I cannot say anything about their service/repair shop but if looking to purchase a bike, check out another shop.

The owner of this bike shop really knows his stuff, and is not out to sell you something you don't need.  Huseyin is meticulous in his fitting and attention to detail.  I couldn't be happier with the quality of service I received.

I have been cycling for three years now and this year I decided to upgrade my bike.  As I researched online the bikes I was interested in I found the ones I wanted to test ride and who reps the brands.  As I called around to the different shops only two of them in the city had the models I wanted to try out.  The first shop answered the phone and was not too friendly nor did they seem interested in making you want to come to their shop, which was odd because the bike I was interested in was an $8,000 bike.  But when I called Bike Nut the guy who answered the phone informed me they had the model I was interested in and asked me to hold on the line while he got his boss to get on the phone.  Huseyin picked up on the other end and immediately started to tell me about the bike and all its features, needless to say I was sold on going into his shop to check the bike out.   My partner decided he would like to start riding as well so he came along with me.  Huseyin spent about 2 hrs with the two of us testing out the model I was interested in and showing us other bikes as well.  He truly cares that you walk away happy with your purchase and was not about making the big sale....he shared with us a wide range of bikes in a few price points.  We ended up purchasing two of the same bikes I went in for.  They changed out all the standard items  to more custom options that we wanted.  Huseyin and his staff are very friendly and well informed on cycling!    They gave me the best bike fitting I have ever had!   If you really want a bike shop that focuses on your needs and willing to inform you about cycling this is the place for you!  I will never go to another bike shop in SF!
