I have heard a lot of fab reviews about bike riding on Gov. Island and couldn't wait to try it for myself. Since I do not own a bike myself, the best option was renting a bike from Bike and Roll. The area is easy to find and accessible coming off the ferry. We were greeted by friendly staff members who came up and down the line giving us service information i.e where kids can rent bikes (child rentals are located in another Bike and Roll kiosk which also houses the buggy type of bikes) and what we would need to rent the bikes. Although we had to wait a bit in line we gave in our information (have State ID ready to give over for deposit) and signed the waiver (the usual stuff) and were off. The bikes are clean and have a flat area on the front with netting to hold any gear you may have. Helmets are optional. Most importantly for me (as I am very short) the bikes are easily adjustable for different heights. We returned our bikes by the last turn in time paid by credit card and that was that! I would rent a bike from them again (and be sure to try the buggy or bike for two kinds)!

Best Bet: Get to the island early in the day to take full advantage of the rental times and prices.

Have ready: State ID (one person can give theirs for the group).

Can pay by cash or credit/debit card.

*Also grab the Riders Club card next to the register on your way out for discounts on your next rental.

We arrived on the island around 3 on a Sunday, wandered a little, so by the time we tried to rent bikes it was probably around 4:30.  They told us that there was a 1.5 hr wait for the bikes, which made no sense whatsoever seeing as how the last ferry off the island was at 7.  If you're going to rent bikes at such a busy location, at least have enough bikes to meet demand!!

I highly suggest biking Gov's Island, but instead of trying to rent on the island itself I suggest you rent them at the Bike and Roll at South St. Seaport and taking them on the ferry with you.

    Staff are highly courteous.
Oh, it's summer time and the boys they have as staff are adorable! (those college-aged boys that are saving up for school with a "summerish" job)..

On Fridays (at least in Summer 2010), biking is free for up to a hour. I have gone there two times already and I'm planning on going during the entire season.

The bikes are well maintained and all you need to do is provide your ID as a deposit. I think it's harder to even get a bike borrowed from a friend.

    Couldn't be any better.

Putting a Bike and Roll on Governors Island was a great idea- the island is perfect for leisurely riding, and the views from Craig Road are amazing- you can see the Statue, Ellis Island and Brooklyn Bridge among others.
They have regular bikes, 2-person bikes, and those quadcycle things (golf carts with pedals).
Rentals are $10/hr or $20 for the day. Most of the roads on G.I. are shady, and they are really enjoyable rides. They seemed to have enough bikes to supply every person on the island... and the bikes themselves aren't half bad.

The bikes are well maintained, the staff is nice, and the free rental deal with downtown alliance can't be beat.
