"If I were a millionaire, all I would ever drink is BWH Peach Champagne."  Water be damned!  These were the words of my fiancé, and really I must agree: this is absolutely delicious stuff.  If you're too "serious" for such frivolities, so much the better (more for me!) --but you too, yes even you, will find a few things to your taste here.  The Lapsus, as others have said, is truly excellent (served mine with apricot chicken, oh yum); and the spectrum of reds offers a variety for any palette.  Go taste! -- you'll adore the winemaker, if he's there, and the staff too is pleasant.

(P.S.: The eponymous Big White House is the locally historic, 19th-century house where the winemaker lived!  Check out the story and other pics on their website.)

The Big White House is in fact NOT a big white house, but more like a small run down brown farm house. Lesson learned: don't let the names of wineries deceive you.

I came out here for the Harvest Wine Celebration during Labor Day Weekend and was not blown away by the quality of wine. Our free tastings included samples of Syrah, Viognier, Sangiovese, & Cuvee. The cuvee was more sweet than bubbly and went flat after just a few minutes of being out of the bottle. The syrah was only A-OK to me, but I usually don't typically enjoy dry reds. Though, I imagined it would be a delightful glass to have with a slab of steak.

I have a feeling I should've just gone inside and pay $5 for the 7 private barrel tastings, but after seeing the huge crowd inside, my claustrophobia told me no. I'm glad I was thoroughly entertained by a lost drunken husband with the 1.5 empty bottles of Henn in his back pocket outside the premises. Highlight of my trip to the Big White House.

This was the highlight of the afternoon yesterday!  Went to Livermore to try some new wineries.  The entire group agreed this was definitely the best one.

We all liked everything that we tried.  They were traditional wines with a different dimension.  All the wines had an expected element to it. Really enjoyed it.

The winemaker is young, but it certainly doesn't show in his wine.

The only things I didn't care for was the "pairings".  The little bites they offered didn't go with the wines, and either did nothing, or completely overwhelmed.  Some crackers would be a better investment.

But I will definitely be back, and just skip the pairings next time.  The wines were great!

At the last release party I especially enjoyed the "Lapsus" pairing with the triple cheese mac.  You also have to try the "Liquid Amber"  It's heaven in a bottle.  Try it with lobster, yummmmm, I have.  My favorite is the new release, "John Evan Cabernet Sauvignon, Kenefick Vineyard, 2007".  You should check it out, it's delicious.

Did a tasting of Big White House and John Evan wines at Blacksmith's Square.  $5 for 7 tastings ... 4 of which were barrel tastings and would be released in the next few weeks.  The tasting fee is also credited back to any purchase of wine.  Unlike many of the wineries themselves, the shops at Blacksmith Square stay open a bit later (till 6:00 PM instead of closing at 4:30 which is when most of the wineries close.)

I liked the viognier and the dolcetto but my favorite of the tastings was the pinot noir.  The Pinot was very smooth but not worth the $40 price tag to me.  The best deal was the $14 bottle of cuvee - drinkable and the only one the boy and I could agree on.

Let it be known: If you're looking for a BIG WHITE HOUSE... you won't find it.

I thought it was so funny that Big White House was actually a brown building. I'm sure there's a story there.

We were here for the Harvest Wine Celebration. The tastings were generous & I got a great vibe from the people there - even amidst the festival madness.

I will definitely be back. Loved their sparkling wine!

Maybe I just had a bad experience here last Saturday but I was not happy when I left.

The wines were good, but overpriced.  $40 Pinot was good, but if I'm going to spend that much I will go to La Rochelle.

The volunteer we had pouring for us was clueless...she did not know which wines were which and was telling us the wrong varietals as we were barrel tasting...they only had 1 sheet available of the wines being poured that day, by the way.

I decide since the tasting fee was $5 I would by the sparkling wine that I tasted, which was $14.  After handing them my card and waiting literally 20 minutes for my transaction to be processed I was ready to leave but tried to be patient...the volunteer returned my card and my total was $42...she charged me for 3 bottles when I had asked for one...so I had to wait longer for them to void it and charge me again...

My total was $17 for the sparkling wine even though the wine sheet said it was $14...apparently they gave us a more *expensive* sparkling wine than the one on the sheet (the peach champagne)...when I brought it up I got the eye roll by another volunteer.  Nice.  I know it was just a couple more bucks, but it bothers me that we weren't tasting what was listed and were given the more expensive bottle to taste instead.  I will *not* be coming back, but maybe I just had a bad experience.

Wine that sucks ass. They should be ashamed of serving this crap. I have never walked out of a tasting room before finishing the wine samplings, but I had to because this is the WORST wine I've every had. Cloudy viognier that tastes sour? How dare you pour that. Ick, ick, ick!

One of the best gems in Livermore.  I am not just saying that because it was the last stop on our Sunday tasting either.  Their Barrel tastings are awesome and I completely agree with the other posts (Jason B. and Tina P.) in that John Evan has got some serious talent.

I typically don't spend more than $20 on a bottle (unless it is for a special occasion), nor am I patient enough to put a favorite on the shelf to mature.  However, the three barrel (John Evan) wines were so good we pre-ordered  cases of 2 of the 3.  I am sure I will not let them mature for too long either..., and can't wait until the release(s).

The folks there are a blast to talk to, and it is pretty cool to see that the creativity is now 2 generations deep---maybe three, as it sounded like the peach sparkling wine was from his mom's tastes.?

I think this will be a stop for us every time we go to Livermore, and I think there a wine here for nearly every palate.

John The Younger - Favorite Wine Maker Ever!

Great wine, great times, very friendly people who are very down to earth. This is not your average run of the mill winery - these are real people who have a passion for what they do. It shows in the quality of the wine.

There is also great rotating art work to check out and a lovely patio to sit on and have a packed lunch.

So I think at this point I've tried most of their wines except The Alchemist, and they are all amazing! My favorite is the peach champagne and the white one called Lapsus. John is super friendly and gave us a tour of the back to see how their wine is made. I never knew there were wineries in Livermore but now I can't wait until spring to try more yummy wine!

Anyone who gave BWH 1 star either didn't taste any of John Evan's wines or doesn't have any clue about wine.  Perhaps you're used to visiting Napa and the wineries *on* the beaten path where the tasting room staffs do a great job *telling you* how the wine tastes before you even sip.

For the money ($30-50) the limited-release wines from John Evan are the best in the Livermore valley.  Especially two cabs: Alchemist and Les Amoreaux.  They would fetch double the price tag at a minimum if the appellation on the label read Stag's Leap, Rutherford, etc.  Check out this stuff!

Definitely the gem of this year's Harvest Wine Festival for me and mine. The barrel and reserve tasting was only $3 and they were tasting, count 'em, 10 different wines.

The food was delightful and the mood was cheerful and lacking the pretense that seems to be creeping into the Livermore wineries (Thanks, Wente).

It's places like this that keep me close to home and away from Napa...not that there's anything wrong with Napa. Still, why drive 45-60 minutes and pay more?

Excellent winery way at the bottom of the Livermore Wine Country.  This guy really knows wine and he was friendly in going over his varietals, let us have some barrel tastings of soon to be bottled wine, and talked about the process of making wine as well as interesting info about the barrels themselves (what type of oak to use, etc).  A great place to visit.
