I normally am not the type of guy to frequent steakhouses.  I'm not a type of eater that refuses to call it a meal if it doesn't come with meat, and my wife is a vegetarian - so when we do go out, a steakhouse isn't usually on the top list.  That, and even though Iowa has excellent options for delicious meat suppliers, steakhouse meals are generally overpriced in my opinion.

Regardless of my normal tastes, we went to the Big Steer with some friends on their recommendation. And while I may not enjoy steakhouses, who can pass up the novelty of a restaurant that displays the food it slaughters in the form of a giant cow lit up like a Christmas tree in front of the building?

I was pleasantly surprised. I don't think I've ever had a waitress do a job as perfectly as ours. She was a total rockstar.  She was right there whenever we needed her, swooping in like a hawk to refill drinks. Friendly, knowledgeable, and fast. The food orders were brought quickly and exactly as we wanted them.

Portions are enormous with tons of side options. Definitely the best steakhouse I've been to in the area. I would highly recommend it for the type of restaurant it is.

I wish I could find their menu online.  They have delicious meat.  And you know what?  The serve spiced apple rings.  They're delicious.  The service was a little formal, I think of this place as a laid-back steakhouse, but really that's no drawback.  The decor is way dated, but I think it adds to the ambiance of a Midwest flatland steakhouse.
