91 reviews for Big Hair
I won't spend a lot of money on my hair. For that reason, I've gotten a lot of terrible hair cuts and dye jobs. 90% of the time I keep my hair pulled back, but for the other 10%, I'd like it to be fabulous. Enter Big Hair.
As a walk-in, not quite sure what I want, "what can you do with these growing out bangs that seemed like a good idea?" kind of person, I've received great cuts, color, and attention from the stylists here. I took one star off, because it does seem like I rarely see the same people working here. I've read that other people have mentioned the turnover, which is disappointing. The prices are great, and whatever punk or rock hairstyle I feel like trying, the stylists listen and understand what I mean. This is a great place to try at least once, I'll keep coming back and recommending it to people I know.
I can't give Big Hair 5 stars, because I probably trust anyone else but Anila to do my hair.
BUT, Anila is totally 5 stars. She listens to what I'm looking for and gives me the exact cut I want. She's a good colorist too. And did I tell you how cheap she is? $25 for a haircut!?! Where else can you find that? Supercuts? Maybe, but you're not going to get the compliments I've gotten from Anila's haircuts from Supercuts, I promise you that.
I am very simple when it comes to getting my hair cut. Big Hair makes it 10 times simpler for me.
I first went in a year ago. I had gone to a couple other places before that and had gotten frustrated with having to make an appointment and not being able to get a time or date that I could make. That's when I heard about Big Hair. They take Walk-Ins only for cuts (reservations for coloring) which helps me out with my schedule.
I waited about 15 minutes, which is not bad at all. Anila cut me hair. She's fantastic! She's very attentive and knows what she's doing. All I told her was to cut it in a way to compliment my face shape and something that's easy to maintain (I'm a Wash 'N Go kind of gal). 10 minutes later (Yes, 10 minutes. She's that good!), she gave me an angled bob with mucho layers in the back. How much did I pay, you ask? $25! Damn, right!
I have brought three friends with me since then and they love the place, too. They got there hair done by different ladies but have a ll said that they know what they're doing. The last two times I went, my hair was cut by someone else. I don't remember her name but she's really good, too (She has a cute short and curly blonde bob). I recently went back with my Pixie cut and she did an amazing job both times. And both times, $20!
For being in Roscoe Village, their prices are competitive and give other salons in the area a run for their money. They also do cuts for kids, who are strangely happy when they leave. Who's ever seen a kid happy after getting their hair cut? Big Hair knows what they're doing and do it right every time.
This review is really for the newest stylist at Big Hair: Mallory. All I have to say is that my bangs have never been so straight (and I have a wicked cowlick that makes this very difficult). The true test of her skills is that I have now washed and styled my hair 3 times post haircut and I am not swearing in the bathroom. Usually, after a haircut I am cursing the stylist, till I grow into the cut (of course I would never let them know). I keep getting complements this week about how healthy my hair looks and of course that makes me feel like a rock star. Thanks Mallory!
OH! Forgot to mention what a value it was. I don't want to say cheep, because I associate that word with stores like Dots, Rainbow and Payless shoes...it's a high quality, affordable haircut.
Oh Big Hair, like many have said you used to be so much better.
Still the price is right and how much damage can you do with men's hair... I would suggest that if you do come here that you find a stylist that you like or that others like and stick with that person. That being said turnover is kind of a problem so call before you come by.
I can't speak to the coloring that they do or anything beyond men's hair and the service for that.
I've spent the last two years growing out my hair, and it wasn't an experience I ever wanted to repeat--now I don't have any choice.
I went into Big Hair to get a trim/styling, whatever you want to call it, for a Halloween costume I'd been trying to put together, and since I was going for something specific I brought in a few pictures as reference. I showed the stylist the pictures and told her what I was aiming for. I'm not sure what happened, but in a matter of five minutes a years-worth of my hair was gone as was any hope of pulling off the costume.
I can't begin to fathom what thought-processes allowed for such a slapdash effort, but I'm pretty sure I could have done a better job myself with a mirror and a pair of scissors--and I would have saved $20.
I'm so hot right now. Strangers smile at me on the street.
Possibly because I got the best haircut ever in the whole wide world from Jennee and I'm practically skipping everywhere I go and my cheesy grin is contagious. Plus, she magically made me infinately better looking. No really, I'm going to have to buy new clothes because my old clothes were good enough when I was a plain 'ol nobody, but now that I'm a hot mama, I'm going to have to dress the part.
If you'd like to make an appointment with Jennee I would suggest you do it soon, because at least six people have asked me "do you think she can do that to me?" I believe she can. She must have had her scissors magically charmed.
I used to swear by this place. Sure, there's a couple of good stylists here, but whenever I would find one I liked, she'd leave.
What has made me change my mind about this place?
- stabbed in the back of the head with scissors. Not hard or deep, but there was a little blood.
- stylist who went on and on about what "G.I. Joe" is, when all I wanted him to do was cut my hair. Also, he offered his friend's "urban surgeon" services if I ever need stitches or any moles removed.
- Bad hair cuts from a girl who is way more into name dropping than hair cutting.
- Investing way too much time into decided who I don't want cutting my hair rather than who I actually want cutting my hair.
Sorry Big Hair, you ain't what you used to be.

I went in today on a whim for a cut. Was feeling really indecisive about what exactly i wanted...just knew I needed a change and that my grown out 'do was bad news.
The stylist's name was Lilly, and she was great. Patient with me, cut off little by little until I figured out just what it was I wanted exactly. My new cut is supercute and super easy...exactly what I need because I pretty much refuse to do any styling other than comb while wet then let the wind take care of the rest.
Also, after talking to her I figured out she was the one who cut my daughter's hair....curly hair that most stylists don't know how to deal with.
I will definitely try not to get my hair cut on a whim again so I can call and make sure Lilly is in.

Ok so i needed a cut bad and came back. I know Twisted Scissors is like the shizznits and all but i gotsta gets my hairs cut when the mood strikes, i can't be all making reservations a month in advance n shit. (nothing against TS yo). So i was all like WTF mate, i needs me a hairscut and Big Hair is like right down the street. I just needs me an easy chop, make it bit kerazy n stuff.
So anyway yeah i walk in here and Lilly sat me down with the quickness and did a bangup job. She asked questions and made sure to get me what i vaguely explained. 20 bones lighter and my hairs are happy. Big Hair is Big Hair, i wish they didn't have such turnover but i got a good cut today. Rock!

DO NOT GO HERE
The woman at the desk so ùnfriendly, the people who cut hair don't know what in the world their doing . My mom left there crying they made her look like a ken doll when she wanted a bob hair cut. The bascially shaved half her hair off. This place is so dirty and so cluttered. I support local bussinesses but this one is defenitly not one of them. The workers are not good at their job.
I found Big Hair through a cousin of mine. I wanted a "Chicken Cut" (Imagine a Mohawk but only on the top of your head and not on the back) and I didn't trust your average stylist to do it. I needed someone "punk and funk". Someone with a funky hair do and a punk look. So I asked my cousin who who happens to fit the "punk and funk" category who she'd recommend and she mentioned Big Hair on Roscoe and Damen.
Called to get an appointment and they said they never take appointments, which is funny because after the first call I've ALWAYS gotten an appointment with Lauren. BTW, Lauren is my girl. I don't let anyone else touch my hair mostly because I now trust her and she was the first one to cut my hair. Anyways, I walked in at 7:30 and no one was there. Just Lauren. So she takes me in and starts going to town on my hair.
She was awesome. Cute and talkative. At first she had NO CLUE what a Chicken Cut was even after I explained it to her but we soon had that worked out. What I loved was the fact that she actually let me help her on the haircut. Me and her both collaborated to see if the cut cut was straight, if my colic was to blame, if it looked good. I like that. No offense taken to anything either of us said or did. All 3 of my cuts with Lauren were Chicken Cuts with the 3rd one being dyed blue. I gotta say the dye was crap. It looked great after she was done but it lasted less than 2 weeks before you could start seeing the blonde come in. I'm not sure what went wrong. Maybe it was the dye? She put me under the oven dryer and everything. I know she would've re-dyed me for free if I came in but I chose not too.
The prices are NOT fucking cheap! When the hell did a guy paying $20 for a goddamn haircut with NO shampooing become cheap?! Who the hell do you guys go to for haircuts? Maybe you call in Mario Tricoci to your home? Make appointments with Jonathan Anton? Ask Paul Mitchell to make you "Silky Smooth"? Come on dude.
I haven't really had a bad experience yet but for some reason, I can see people having a bad experience here. Not sure why. My only complaints are my blue hair leaving me within a week and not having things like the hair not being cleaned off my head after a hair cut, done to me. Also, they DON'T accept credit cards. CASH ONLY. Bring cash, lest you look like a total douchebag when you're done with your haircut and standing in front of the cash register.
So far there is not ONE salon that I've seen that I consider proper. Big Hair of course to me isn't proper either but they get the job done. I'll keep you updated and if I get a bad cut I WILL be back on here. I'll still love you though Lauren.
My hair is by far my finest physical attribute. In complete honesty, it might be my finest attribute, period. Mind, body, soul, all that shit. I hadn't gotten it cut in close to three years. But duty calls, and this shit needed to go.
I went to Big Hair mainly because I had been there a couple of times before, which was years ago. I walked in and explained to my stylist how terrified I was of letting my hair go. I told her about how I was having an anxiety attack, about how it felt like I was going in to get my arm amputated, and a few other overly-dramatic comments and comparisons. She told me to relax, "I've been doing this for a long time." This put me at ease. 30 minutes later I went from having a serious case of metal-head halfway down my back to a fresh, professional hair do. And I felt good about it.
She also put everything she cut off into a nice, big pony tail that I'm going to send to Locks of Love so I can make a sick little girl very, very happy.
My experience was totally five star, but I'm only going to drop 4 because I'm kind of missing my locks.
Attention Queer Ladies! If you are looking to get a rad haircut, go see Kara. She can hook you up in the sexy gay haircut department. :)

This is the only place I've gone to get my hair cut in Chicago. I love just saying, please just fix it. (they probably hate hearing that) but they do it! I've always had friendly service and it's a nice atmosphere, reminding me of Rudy's in Seattle.
Prices aren't too bad either!
My girls have been going to Big Hair for about a year now and have always come back with great cuts. So I decided to try them. BIG HAIR Mistake!!!! The woman who cut my hair left one side at lease a half inch longer than the other side and choppy. When I went back to get it fixed they had the nerve to CHARGE me $5 for getting it fixed! Needless to say neither I nor my girls will be back.
Here's the thing. I HATE getting my haircut.
I hate it when a stylist asks me what kind of "look" I'm going for. "Do you want to keep the look you've got or are you interested in trying a new look?" Uh, is "shorter" a look? Can we do that, please?
And I hate at the end of the haircut when the stylist hands me the mirror and I have to examine myself and nod approvingly, like I'm testing a bottle of wine. Mmm, yes. That's good.
Some people have an aversion to doctors. I have an aversion to hair stylists and, as a result, I usually look like an overgrown shrub by the time I give up and give myself over to one. After a couple of disasters across the street at SAL'S (see review), I took up a brief affair with BIG HAIR.
I'm sure the stylists at Big Hair ran in horror when they saw me approaching with my two bespectacled eyes peering out from the tangle of brown curly mess. But they hung with me through several pained visits, spanning over a year.
Eventually my girlfriend told me to stop going there. Sorry Big Hair, looks like our affair is over.
I just got a glorious cut and color down the street from Big Hair at Conexion. It was such a great job that I was reminiscing back on the days when I didn't know about Conexion and the myriad of bad hair care I used to get at local salons. The dubious award of all time worst hair cut and color services goes to Big Hair.
I wanted to like it, but when my stylist [and I use that term loosely] gave me chemical burns that left me with a bleeding and blistered scalp I couldn't help but hate it. When she went to blow my hair out, she kept digging into my tortured scalp with the sharp tines of the brush until I would practically scream. She also wanted me to pay full price, but the manager intervened and dropped the price of the coloring.
I have witnessed stylists here barely even look at their client while cutting their hair and instead engage in a conversation with someone else.
If you value the hair on your head in the slightest, do not go to Big Hair. You are better off at a Hair Cuttery or Great Clips.
I came to Big hair by the suggestion of a friend. I had recently had a really bad hair cutting experiencing.. (see my reviews of Hair Cuttery) So i needed a fix, fast. Big Hair definitely came to the rescue.
Ayla and Stephanie have both cut my hair. They are both fantastic, and did exactly what i wanted. I like to give freedom to a good stylist, and they took what i said, put their spin on it, and made my 'do look fab.
And seriously, 20 bucks for a haircut? I was stunned. It is almost impossible to find a good stylist under 50. Love it!
They've always done right by me, and I have tricky hair. Lots of volume, kinda wavy, and now that I'm mostly gray (ahem, prematurely ;) it comes in kinky. I stopped getting it colored here because a) it takes too long and b) in this economy, a five dollar box of L'Oreal will do me just fine, thanks. My old stylist left a while back, but I recently went in and found a new one. I know she's the right one because she had a picture of Lemmy posted near her mirror, along with other rockin' rockers. If you don't know who Lemmy is, I am turning my nose up at you and making a "Hmph!" sound as I walk away snootily.
Yeah, Stephanie did it a again. She knocked it out of the park with my sassy new do and my warm rich color with just enough highlights. Color is absolutely amazing! I highly recommend Steph for cuts or color and also was able to observe the handiwork of Anayla (not sure if thats her name) but she did some excellent color and three awesome cuts while I was there.

I won't tell someone to come here if I think they're even a tad precious about beauty services. And, if you come there looking for a fight, one of those tattooed, roller-derby-competitor stylists will give you one. But, if you find a good stylist and stick to her/him, it will be the best cheap haircut you've ever had.
Why the five stars? When I was being treated for cancer, and came in to have my long hair shorn before it started falling out, they wouldn't accept any money from me. And, it was a great haircut, albeit one that didn't stay put very long.
Your stylists Hilary and Lauren have moved to Strange Beauty Show in Wicker Park. No hard feelings to Big Hair though! http://strangebeautysh...
I came here all through college for haircuts, colors, what have you. Sometimes it wasn't so great (some big rockabilly dude didn't know how to give me the Mia Farrow) but most of the time it was great. The staff is really friendly & they are one of those hair places whereat I feel most comfortable because I'm not given a weird look if I want my locks white blonde or shaved.
I really miss my derby girl Megan. She was the best.
the 1 star comes more than anything from the fact that I have a not too distant memory of paying $10 for a $10 hair cut there.
Now, you pay $20 for a $10 hair cut
Granted, I'm a guy, so this is a purely male review
It can be hit or miss, but the miss is bad.
The 1 star also serves as a warning about the male haircutter who has OCD, the last hair cut I got was a disaster that can be blamed squarely on the brain functions of the man wielding the scissors
Big Horror.
Let's see. Where to start.
Oh, right. They burned my hair off. And only after having hi-lite foils on my head for like an hour, did I say...my scalp is burning, isn't it time to take these off? And she still made me wait a few minutes. And acted annoyed that I was rushing her from smoking crack or whatever the hell she was doing.
I ended up having to leave with wet hair because the whole damn snarly time took so long, and I had dinner plans. Yeah, I looked awesome, luckily it was with old friends.
I had my hair cut into a "pixie" one week later because my hair was so damaged. It's taken FOREVER to grow out.
My suggestion if you want cheap, great color and cuts? Find an apprentice at a high end salon, UNDER SUPERVISION. I've never had a bad experience with any of them. They post frequently on Craigslist "free stuff" section, or http://www.SalonAppren.... I've also heard Troupe Salon in the Gold Coast or Trio Salon in Wicker Park offer these discounted services.
Just avoid this place. Forever.
I'm done with this place.
All my haircuts here have been pretty good in the past, but it's just too big of a pain to deal with not being able to get in. I called yesterday afternoon asking when they closed, and they told me "just get here before 5 and we'll get you in". Fine. I couldn't make it yesterday but left work an hour early today to get there in time. I was there at 4:45 and was told "We're not letting anyone else in". Thank goodness the Damen bus was only a block away so I could find somewhere else to cut my hair.
Yeah, the haircuts are cheap (though not as cheap as they used to be) and the stylists are cool enough, but they don't take appointments, have crappy hours for those of us with jobs, and they don't take credit cards. There are other places for similar money that actually take appointments.
Just FYI: Michael, Parki, and Megan (the only three I would ever go to) are no longer working at Big Hair.
I hear Megan is at Shine, Parki is at Robert Jefferey in Andersonville and Michael is at Styles.

Got the best haircut I've ever had at this place, but ...
I got the worst haircut I've ever had there, as well.
It's a total hit-and-miss, like most hair salons, but I couldn't help but feel like an outsider due to the standoffish attitude that seemed to circulate through the place. Maybe it's because I don't look like a typical hipster. Oh well.
Normally I go to Twisted Scissors, but they were booked this weekend. So at Big Hair I saw Stephanie who gave me a great haircut, kept conversation flowing but absolutely non-irritating, and she flat ironed my hair - all for $25. She did exactly what I asked, but made it even better when it came to the layers. I think I've just found a new stylist!
The only I reason I gave 4 stars was the weird sign in system they have. I got my name on the list and was told it would be 40 minutes, and the woman even asked me if I wanted to go run errands instead of sit. I left for 30 mns, and then came back to see them taking walk ins right away. When I asked why, I was told they'd already called my name so they assumed I was gone. Then I was seated. Guess I'll know better for next time.
i stopped in here last July because i'd heard i could get a cheap cut, and i was looking for a new style. Courtney did such a great job, i've been going back ever since! i've been through a couple of style and color changes, and Courtney gets a great feel for what i want and i always leave incredibly happy with my hair.
i love the atmosphere here, definitely punky and plenty of visual stimuli, but i never feel overwhelmed by it since the staff and the vibe is so casual. i'm a hipstery 20 something but i've seen both seniors and kids come in for cuts too. i have short hair and i get by for $20 for a cut and $55 for a color. walk-ins only for haircuts but you can call and schedule a color...i always forget. :]
just one person's experience tho...check it out for yourself!
I used to go to Art and Science for a great cut, but now I'm a regular at Big Hair! I ended up going there because I had to get my hair cut pronto and I couldnt get in to A&S for a week, so I thought I'd try my luck at Big Hair. My hair is pretty long and they cut it exactly as I asked and even added additional funky texture to it! And all for only $20! (A&S charges around $65) Go to Big Hair!
UPDATE: OOOOooookay. So, remember that time when Big Hair gave me a mullet? Cause I do. I wrote the above review a very long time ago. Since then, their staff has gone down in quality and their prices have gone up. The last straw was when I went in and specifically said "don't thin out my hair." What did the girl do? Thinned out my hair SO much that I looked down and half of it was on the ground around me. And what she didn't lop off with the thinning shears, she ended up cutting unevenly. By far the worst cut I've ever had. I now go to Carina at none other than Art & Science in Lincoln Park. She's great and it's worth the extra bucks to get a consistently good cut. I've become a born again Art & Scientologist.
I am broken hearted. I had been to Big Hair off and on in the past, with mixed results, but then I came back, found Lauren, and was finally, finally sure I had found the place that would make my hair happy. It was a great run.
I had a huge event that called for great hair, so I made an appointment for cut and color way in advance, then called on Monday to confirm my Wednesday appointment. Everything was a go. Then, on the day of my appointment, they called me to cancel because they had "changed their hours", and wouldn't be open when I came in to get my hair done. I was upset, they were unmoved. Who does that?? They told me I could come in right away for just a cut - wow, I can leave work 3 hours early and not get what I'd asked for?
Sadly, I'm going to have to let a great stylist go for working at a horrible place.
I used to go here when I just had a bob. It's cheap and the ambience is a lot better than, say, Fantastic Sam's. I'd say, if you want a simple, straightforward haircut there's no sense in paying upwards of $40 for it. Just go here.
Also, like everybody else says, try to go when most other people are at work.
This *used* to be my favorite salon in Chicago.... then they raised their prices (almost doubled in less than two years) and a whole bunch of people left and the people they hired were, um, less than, well, punk-y. The hair I'd been growing out for months and months was shredded and I ended up looking like a soccer mom. Yuck.
And the fact that they refuse to take appointments for haircuts just sucks. There have been times I've waited upwards of three hours for a HAIRCUT. Thank goodness there are places to browse in the 'hood or else I never would've thought about waiting that long.
The wait can be annoying, for you get a lot for your buck. BEWARE they do have 1 bad hairstylist. Queenie cut my hair once and it was horrible, I thought it was just a fluke, so I let her cut my hair again - it was even worse. I told her that I'm growing my hair out. I even showed her a picture of a haircut I did NOT like. She asked me what I didn't like about the cut and continued to cut my hair to resemble the cut I showed her (that I didn't like). She added as lot of super-short layers. UGLY. I cried the entire day.
Patty, the owner, is great. She's quick and will do exactly what you need. She gave me my first "Big Hair" haircut and won me over.
I've gotten the best haircuts ever at the salon, and as previously mentioned, the worst haircuts ever. Good Luck.
Big hair is a good deal if you can wait for it... I've tried going there twice in the past month and both times I've been shoo'ed away. The girl at the counter has either said, "they are closed" when the door was obviously open and it was an hour before their hours posted said they would be closed. The second time I walked in and I couldn't even reach the paper to sign in my name they were so busy.
When I have gotten my hair cut there which has been twice, it's turned out alright, a little bit shorter than I've asked for and I have hair bits all over but it's nice to go somewhere and get a cooler hair style for a cheaper price.
Since they are raising their prices on October 1st though I think I'm going to pass.
I got my hair cut twice here. Which might not be the smartest idea since I have great (if I do say so myself), long curly hair. The people who cut my hair both times both had straight, short hair. As a result, they seemed to know only how to cut straight, short hair.
I like the idea of a less-expensive hair cut, as well as supporting smaller businesses, but I would not go back here. I wouldn't say it's alternative and funky but rather cluttered and disorganized (and ironically, a little pretentious). When I got there one time, there was no one in the place save for two stylists and someone else at the front "desk". I still had to wait half an hour. Um, ok. They only take appointments if you want to get your hair colored.
Granted I'm not the trendiest/funkiest person I know, but if you don't have tattoos or short/hipster hair, they don't really give you the time of day.
How can you rate a place when everyone there might be an independent contractor with different talents and personalities? My rating comes down to the fact that it's up for grabs there.
You can't make an appointment which drops it one star off the bat. Both times I've been there I was greeted with something akin to "what do you want - what are you doing here?". I can handle that so no penalty. The first time I went in the next available cutter took care of me and did a pretty good job. I had found my new place.
The (gender neutral) "person" gave me a card with an email address but it turns out to be a bad address. Every time I called to see if said person was working I would get something like "no, try tomorrow" rather than a schedule. Again, the "no appointments" policy is what leads to this indignity.
So, I got with the program and just walked in a took the next available cutter. The (gender neutral) cutter seemed clear on what I wanted and then f**ed up my head with some military cut that I wouldn't have agreed to even if they were paying ME. Was it my fault? Was I unclear? Who knows.
Like I said, up for grabs and no quality control. Go at your own peril.
I'm not surprised that the reviews here run the whole range of stars.
I am a big fan of this place. I've been going here for almost a year now. The staff consists of punk rock chicks and one guy, Scotty. I've had haircuts from various stylists. It is probably the best place to go for a haircut in Chicago for the price: $20!
You can't make appointments for cuts, but you can for color. I just go on the weekend (Saturday open at 10 am, Sunday at Noon). Just bring a book and go wait outside; I recommend getting there about 30 minutes early.
