10 reviews for Big Daddy & Sons
Ever had one of thsoe days where sandwihes and barbeque food on the beach just doesn't cut it? A day where you want to lick your lips after eating funnel cake and realize you have powdered sugar still on your lip? And a day where you want top drink a float and share it with your best friend, no doubt?
This is the place you need to be if any of those little rhetorical questions piqued your interest. The pizza is amazing, the funnel cake is the way it should be (crispy but fluffy and in a convoluted shape), and the root beer floats are amazing.
Seriously, some of the stuff on the menu is unexpected... like an oreo stuffed donut, or pesto pizza, but no matter what you pick oyu never go wrong.
Big Daddy's is an iconic Venice Beach spot, on the corner of Market and the boardwalk. You can't miss it: BIG DADDY'S is emblazoned across their gaudy exterior. Besides a few tables outside, the corner kitchen/cashier area is the whole enchilada. It can get crowded, but service is typically fast so your wait won't be long.
Their menu is all fast, greasy food, and there's frozen yogurt and ice cream if the mood strikes. We shared a sweet, churro-like, flat dessert, along with some onion rings. The rings were large and satisfying, with just the right amount of breading. If we weren't on our way to dinner, I'd have tried their dipped hot dogs or fish tacos!
Worth a try if you're in the neighborhood - it's not like they're expensive.
I guess I just have a strong stomach!
I like the food here especially the fish tacos which are crispy and greasy and loaded with lots of yum. Their wings are so so, but the fries are excellent, they are thick potato chips that are even better when covered in wing sauce and ranch. MMmm!
The portions are huge, which I credit for the tummy ache afterwards. I don't like eating lots of greasy foods, but I'm compelled to when I chow here. The wait times can be a little sucky, but hey! You're at Venice! Enjoy the parade of freakdom proudly walking by you!
Forget about Wahoo's or Rubio's, for the best fish tacos in all of LA, go to Big Daddy's walk-up on the Venice boardwalk. They crispy fry, lightly but heavenly battered, white fish and top it with cabbage, salse verde, lime, and tons of fresh onions and cilantro. They make Wahoo's and Rubio's look like cat food. The rest of their fast food is only okay. Edible pizza, but nothing to write home to the East Coast about. Their green pizza or pizza verde is better than their Italian style.
Note: The Venice boardwalk is several blocks long. You can access it from many little side streets off of Ocean Front Blvd. The websites say to pay for parking, but if you go on a weekday afternoon,
you can find free street parking on Navy and the other side streets quite often. The boardwalk can still get sketchy and a little dangerous after dark. If you do get stuck there after dark by accident, don't walk along the beach. Stay on the boardwalk or walk over to Main Street.
I'm really surprised this place has good reviews. We got double cheeseburgers and "fries", then walked over to a grassy area to eat. A guy passed us on his bike, saw what we had and said, "You made the same mistake I made. That's the worst food on the beach. " My friend laughed and he said, "I'm not kidding." Well... he was right. The "fries" were long, thin slices of potato that probably crisp up like chips when cooked except these were completely raw, greasy lumps all stuck together. The birds enjoyed them. The hamburger was nicely dressed with lettuce, big juicy tomato and lots of pickles. The bun was fresh. The meat tasted really FUNKY. At first we thought it was soy or maybe fillers, like a meatloaf, but that after taste.... Not sure what it was, but I don't ever want it again.
During the trip to Venice I managed to procure a slice of authentic California Pizza topped with spinach, feta, and tomato from Big Daddy's Pizza.........unfortunately it was pretty crappy, poorly cooked, and vastly inferior to the next piece of Cali pizza I had.......at Spago. :-)
i can't even count how many sun-burned, stoned, broke-as-f*ck, playing hookie trips to big daddy's i've taken in my short life. they've never disappointed me with their cheap pizza and bomb churros!
haha, okay. so here's the deal.
if you want to get GOOD food at venice, it's probably not really going to happen. it looks pretty ghetto and hole-in-the-wall...and it is, haha. however, big daddy's has THE BEST onion rings. to die for.
but you will definitely get heartburn after. ah, venice. :)
OK I like this place because of the 1 dollar hot dogs that you can get dipped in bbq sauce with sauteed onions and jalepenos, but I just read Sofia M's review, and that is sick!! I definitely believe it too based on the way the place looks and the vibe. Total diss! I'm just going to make my own hot dog the same way.
haha yeah, my best advice is to eat BEFORE you come to venice. but if you need a good GREASY snack, the onion rings are incrediblyyy good, pizza is decent. mmm definitely something to try while you're visiting a great tourist and local spot. :)
