The operative word here is "serviceable." You can probably get what you need, but more than likely you want to forgo this store for a more reputable chain somewhere else.
For some reason this place has looked like it's been going out of business for the past 3 years. Great in that I bought a free-weight set for a significantly reduced price (only to realize to my chagrin and affirmation to my own stupidity that I now had to drag home a 45 lb. weight set as I didn't have a car).
In short, check it out if you don't absolutely need something right away, and definitely don't expect any sort of help in your endeavor other than a "get yourself to a floor that I'm not on" look from an employee. Worth a look if you're bargain-hunting, just make sure you have the appropriate means to lug it home!

The manager chawing on his gum ands he watched a customer service cashier ring up a return....
chawing.. umm can I have a piece?
She and I complete a transaction.. I am going to ask her a question.. and she answers the phone.. I wait. Then she looks at me and says "you're good to go!"
Well, I was going to ask something.. but I guess I am good to go.
What is with this dismissal? Why do you work here? Why does the manager chew gum? Where are the sweat pants? Why did I come in here?

I hate going in this one because of the customer service, but it is convenient when you are going… Read more »
Yes. Ms. Cashier... I will give you the benefit of the doubt. I guess if I earned $5.00 an hour, and my daddy and mommy made me take a summer job to pay for auto insurance for my BMW, I' d be bitter too! You had me wait at the camera counter as you rang up 15 people. (I wanted to buy a pair of binoculars). I saw two managers (?) running around putting shoes away and inventory. What the hell?!?!? I waited politely and had to basically corner one of you in order to get any kind of service. As I came up to the counter to pay, I didn't even get an apology for waiting so long. I'd give this store zero stars, but Yelp won't let me. If your looking for customer service, I'd avoid this place like the plague.

I went here yesterday to buy a gift card.
It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that good, either.
I went in, waited in line, and got the gift card. The salesperson was competent. No problems. She wasn't friendly, but she wasn't unfriendly either.
I'd go back if I ever have to. But hopefully I won't ever have to. I hate sporting goods stores.
Big 5 scares me. It's too hunting-and-fishing biased for me. We don't hunt in Australia because shooting most animals there just pisses them off enough to kill you. I can't think of anything more scary than wandering out in the woods wearing camouflage and trying not to be shot by another hunter. shiver.
They do have a good selection, but this is the K-Mart of sporting goods stores. The store is badly lit, and badly laid out. I went there today (and actually did find and buy my Ab Straps) and the place was deserted in a post-apocalyptic way. On the second floor, I was the only soul there, not even a staff member to help. It's so empty you want to run down to the front doors to make sure you haven't stayed past closing and been locked in.
They have a lot of stuff, but not much variety in the stuff they carry. For example, their Under Armour racks are only a couple and they only have a small selection of the clothes. Compared to G.I. Joe's, they really have almost nothing.
Plus, they are on just about the creepiest part of the Ave. They get 2 stars because I found what I needed there...

What, there's no -5 stars?
I went there yesterday to look for outerwear (you know, a waterproof/softshell kind of thing because my winter jacket is too hot now and I need something to keep me dry while I run around the UW campus between classes).
Ema: Do you have any softshell jackets that are waterproof?
Big 5 Worker: No.
Ema: Do you have any outerwear at all? Like Northface or Mountain Hardwear?
Big 5 Worker: No
At that, I just said 'um...ok..." and RAN OUT of there.
How scary! People, do not go in here for anything, ever.
(How do people get hired here? My friend's dog is more cheerful and even shakes your hand and always is so friendly and happy to see everyone!)
Pretty good sports equipment store. They definitely have variety.
It's three floors. The first floor is workout wear, water sports, racket games, board games, inline skates and hockey equipment, sneakers and some other gear. The second level is camping, fishing, ski/snowboarding, some more exercise equipment. And the third is big ticket items, like exercise machines.
Great prices and markdowns all over the place. Really good staff too. Drawback is parking is a hassle since it's on a busy street and no ice hockey equipment.
the only decent sportswear/goods joint on the strip. i never really knew why we needed it RIGHT on the AVE. i never wanted to step in here- due to the lack of organization and what not. the selection, however, is extensive.
i usually found everything i needed here. i was an avid tennis player, so this place bid me well. i don't miss it at all, though. their shoe selections sucked balls.

Seems remarkably similar to the rest of the Big 5 stores, including the difficult to find staff. We tried to find somebody to help us with shoes, but nary a staff member was to be found. We left.
I buy my shoes here.

I was kind of expecting a bad experience given the reviews on here. However, the employees there were friendly and helpful, and I found most of what I was looking for. The only downside is that, yes, it's in a busy district, so you have to deal with traffic. Still, it's a good enough place.
Great prices if you can find what you're looking for. Absolute horrible service though and why do they need to know my phone number when I'm just buying a $3 nalgene bottle?...wtf!
Absolutely horrible service. I went on a Saturday morning to buy some swim gear and the store was empty. Despite that, every single one of the sales people was rude and unhelpful. This store sucks.
I think this place has some of the best deals in town on all sorts of stuff. Great buys on shoes for kids and adults. Serious markdowns when they mark it down. I've picked up Speedo swimsuits for less than $10. Multi-leveled joint so check all the levels. Parking can be a total hassle on the Ave. so go at odd hours. Open evenings and weekends.
