Knowledgeable wait staff, great food and fun environment. Owner, Mark, is usually there. We go there at least once a month and would go more if we weren't so busy.
Romantic place to take that special person. Owner reserved us a nice spot when I called for a birthday -

This is another gem of a restaurant for Excelsior. Biella is small and romantic with delicious Italian cuisine. It's the perfect place to enjoy date night (and then take a stroll down to the shores of Lake Minnetonka).
I'm sure their entire menu is good, but in the three times we've dined there, I can't order anything but the Penne Bolognese alla Rossa. It's so clearly made with love - you won't regret it.
The servers at Biella are friendly and knowledgeable - they can just as easily tell you all about the cheeses on the cheese plate as they can take the time to hear about what brought you there (and then present you with a $10 gift certificate to come back for your next anniversary meal).
They will have our business as long as they are in Excelsior. -

I was out in the west burbs for work, so I stopped in this place to eat. So glad I did! Let me just cut to the chase and say I had the best mussels I have ever eaten in my life here.
The ambiance was lovely-very friendly, upscale, but not at all snooty.Service was fantastic. I had the mussels that were on the appetizer menu. It was big enough for dinner. I've never had mussels cooked so perfectly. It had a very tasty sauce on it full of garlic and chorizo sausage which was delicious and filling. Even though I live in St Paul, I'd drive out west to go to this place again - it was a great experience. -

Who would have known!? What a pleasure to have such a great option outside the city. Service and food were top notch.

The food and the service made for the worst dining experience in a long time. I feel sorry for Excelsiorites that this is the one of few options in the area. All of my friends at the table were amazed how many service errors were made, poor food quality, and how the management showed a clear lack of concern. We will not return.

I finally got to try Biella while visiting friends and family. I love spending time in Excelsior and on Water Street as it is where I grew up and spent a lot of my time. The little restaurant is cute (although it was a bit warm in there). I ordered the chicken linguine (no sauce) which had snap peas in it. Everything about it was delicious - so flavorful - I am sad I don't get to eat there all the time!

Average wine list - bar is not comfortable for a quick drink and app. Plenty of people for dinner so will be back to try the food.

My parents have a place in Excelsior, and I am lucky to frequent this place whenever I visit!
Most recently I had both of the specials-- an asparagus soup that was AMAZING, as in, I licked the bowl clean, is that awkward? I then had the paella, which was most quite as mind blowing but very tasty nonetheless, especially since it had my favorite brussel sprouts in it, mmm.
The service is always very friendly and good, fantastic atmosphere-- I just couldn't ask for a better local restaurant!!! -

My boyfriend took me to this romantic haunt about a month ago. Thanks to a reservation, we were promptly seated by the owner, who took the helm of the hosting duties. We ate, drank and were merry--for the most part.
I think we had a new server, and he wasn't too quick on the draw. In fact, we waited for about 12 minutes before he greeted us and took our drink order. The restaurant had plenty of server assistants, so I can't imagine that our waiter was too occupied with other tables.
The food itself was delish! We ordered the Artisan Board (an assortment of imported meats and cheeses) as an appetizer and gobbled it up quickly. For the main course, I had the filet and my boyfriend had the Penne Bolognese all Rossa. He cleared his plate, and I probably had an ounce left on mine. All in all, the food gets an A.
Pros:
Food was delish
Lovely ambience
Extensive wine list
Romantic
Location --- Would be great in the warmer months, especially to take a walk down to the lake.
Cons
Service was lacking.
The pizza oven wasn't working, so I couldn't have my first choice off the menu. -

I was at Biella this past weekend for dinner. I love the location and the ambiance of this little Excelsior restaurant. The owner greets his guests at the door and it's a very welcoming place.
I had the Halibut special and it was out of this world - perfectly cooked. My friend had a traditional pasta bolognese which I tried and was also excellent.
My only complaint was that our server was drinking almost steadily at the back of the restaurant. I have worked in restaurants in the past and often privately owned restaurants will allow the staff to have a glass of wine or two during their shift. Unfortunately, our server had quite a bit and by the end of our meal he seemed to have developed a little bit of amnesia. We had to ask repeatedly for our check and he was fumbling around quite a bit. A sad ending to a great dinner! -

I have to admit I was skeptical of a restaurant by lake Minnetonka. I'm a city girl who recently moved out west so my husband and I have been looking for some new places to eat. We were very pleasantly surprised by Biella. We were greeted and sat immediately and had great attentive service the entire night, food was fantastic as well. Give this place a try in the burbs,

I've been to a lot of Italian restaurants in Chicago, but none of them could quite keep up with the impression Biella made on me. It's location is superb, to begin with, right on the main strip and near the lake, with plenty of parking either on the street or the numerous lots. The interior is a pleasure, paintings and a warm hues to make quite a romantic setting. The servers are wonderful, and the food, as said, is some of the best food I've ever had. This is a charm of Excelsior, and worth the drive from wherever you are.
My girlfriend had spent a few months in Italy, and I'm bringing her here this summer to see how it stands up. I anticipate nothing less than for her to be quite pleased. -

"Biella with a Fella, & my Boats all Afloat"
This food feels like a Vacation for the Soul, it transports you elsewhere, more Gourmet than what one expects to find in Minnesota. What a treat that is in Quaint Downtown Excelsior & you can sit outside in your Resort Inspired Upscale Beachwear & watch Couples on their way boating & enjoying the best reason to live in Minnesota, Lake Life at it's best, enhanced by a meal that Romance is made of.Their menu seems to Change it up allot, & that is one reason to love it.Last time we were there I had a Summer Veggie Risotto, & a lovely Beet Salad with Goat Cheese & Polenta Wedges.
My "Sailor Boy" was smiling & cooing over his meal, but I was so busy floating away on mine that I really didn't register what he was having, & being a guy, he has forgotten.Only remembers that I looked cute & the food was particularly scrumptious that day.The decor inside is beautiful inside too, wood floors, white table cloths, but I am there to be outside enjoying a true Dining experience, so we don't go inside much.Biella, you Float my Boat!!!

My wife and I went on a Saturday night for our anniversary. The restaurant is located in downtown Excelsior. The inside of the restaurant reminded me of restaurants in LIttle Italy in New York City, about 30-35 tables, rustic.
My wife had a spinach salad with gorgonzola cheese and strawberries that she loved. I had the soup special that had a taste of hummus and was fabulous.
For dinner, I had the fish special and it was perfect. There were brussel sprouts and asparagus with the fish that were cooked to perfection.
My wife had the steak and her steak was cooked as it should, pink on the inside, seasoned well.
For dessert we both had the flourless chocolate cake with melted chocolate on the inside.
To top it off, our waiter was knowledgeable, fun, and paced the meal so that we were never rushed and never waiting.
I highly recommend Biella's and I know we'll be back. -
