I was in the market for a high quality messenger bag and went to peruse at Bicycle Therapy. I ended up going there twice that day. As I was milling around John quickly came back and introduced himself. He was very helpful and low key - no pressure.
I was undecided so I went riding around for a bit before making a decision. When I came back later that day, John was quick to come back and help me. Plus we chatted a bit and he was genuinely nice which is rare for a lot of sales people.
Plus they cut my handlebars for next to nothing and also put me in front of the line for this quick and simple request. So my experience so far has been very positive.
As a side note my RE Load (made in Philly!) messenger bag is functional, comfortable, waterproof, built like a tank and looks great. I get complements everyday from a different person about this bag. Seriously.
I'm no expert cyclist, but I know a great service when I see it. Went into Bicycle Therapy last week for a fit on the Novara Strada that I had bought from Craigslist over a year ago, riding it without making many adjustments. Naturally, my back has been killing me.
The owner graciously installed the cleats on my shoes, then went to work. Even before I got on the trainer he adjusted my seat. Then he spent over an hour taking my measurements, fine tuning the bike, replacing the tape, and replacing my stem with a shorter one. My rides this week have been pure butter, an incredibly improved ride with no back pain.
Can't say it was cheap (fits start at $75, and go up from there to include well-over-a-hundred fits that include serious guidance on biking form; tune-ups start at $60), but an incredibly professional and nice staff make it worth every penny.
A couple years ago, I was in the market for a new bike. I tried a couple places before I went to bicycle therapy but glad I ended up here. They were very helpful, very knowledgeable and I left with a bike the same visit that I still love til this day. Genuine staff, if I am in the market for anything else bike related, I will certainly be going back.
The guys here are very friendly and helpful, even right before closing. I only had a tube change but it was super quick & cheap. I have an old 60's Columbia w/ a basket and I could tell it wasnt the typical bike they work on or sell but they didnt act snooty about it and I appreciated that.
These guys are great.
Minus the fact that they took off a kick-stand and kept it without mentioning it (and then I obliviously took the bike home without noticing), I have had wonderful experiences with them. It isn't inaccessibly expensive. They're smart and skilled dudes... who are NICE too. That is really something to praise.
When looking for accessories such as helmets or baskets or bags, check this place out. I got one of those great multi-use helmets with the visor there and I get compliments from everyone. Sure, the helmet was a little costly but the benefits (and sweet fashion attention) hugely outweighs.
So get on it! (both a bike and their services)
Hooray for Bicycle Therapy!
The shop is spacious, bright, clean and full of helpful and friendly people who are ready to answer your questions! They have a good selection of bikes, accessories and apparel and it is clear that they are all bike fanatics in there!
Mad props to Bicycle Therapy!
I'm the type of person who has trouble spending over $100 at any given time on any one item. So, naturally my decision to buy a road bike was filled with anxiety. I went to many bike shops, asking lots of questions, getting lots of pressure and left many feeling like "bike" was a foreign language. Then in steps Bicycle Therapy! I stopped by the shop, cruised around for a bit and then was asked if I had any questions. I told the guy what I was looking for and he offered many suggestions and literally spent an hour plus going through each. Awesome! Of course, my anxiety about major purchases got the best of me that day, so I walked out of the shop more knowledgeable then I had arrived but still roadbike-less. After a full year of stalking the bike (i.e visiting the store every month or so and looking at it), I finally dug deep and summoned enough courage to buy the damn bike! It was one of the best purchases I ever made. BT staff rock, knowledgeable, patient, bike enthusiasts.
I've been coming here for a few years now. I got my bike here. The folks are great. I would not bring my bike to any other shop. Great service. The prices are what to expect but they will always help you out. Always. Nobody is arrogant or short with you like at other shops.
Honestly, the service here is the best you will find. Those guys are smart as hell. They know what they are doing and will help you with anything.
By the way, they build a bomb-proof wheel. Best wheel-builders in Philly.
Great Bike store. Lee (the owner) built me an awesome mountain bike. He knows bikes well! He also rides bikes, both mountain and road, every day. His staff is great and take care of you as soon as you walk in.
Thanks Lee.
I went to Bike Therapy a month or so ago because I really, really wanted a Specialized Allez road bike. I ended up purchasing a cool assTrek from Bike Line instead because the sales people at BT stood around chatting with each other as if the store weren't milling with prospective customers. Maybe it was an off day for them, who knows? But if they haven't been in poser mode, I wouldn't have ended up with such a sweet ride!
At the risk of sounding redundant, I'm throwing in my hat for Bicycle Therapy as well. I'm a relatively novice cyclist, and everything these other reviews say about the nice and knowledgeable treatment from their staff is totally true. It's easily the tidiest and most well-lit bike shop in the city. I was looking to get a basic hybrid for my work commute and trips to the Wissahickon, and they outlined my best options and let me test-ride four different bikes on three separate visits (w/o hassling me) before I arrived at my decision. Several times I showed up right after work just before they were closing, and they never rushed me out the door. I spent a little more than I'd originally intended, but after a month of biking, I feel certain they helped me make the right choice -- I'm one happy camper on my bike.
I scoped out numerous bike shops in the city, in the process discovering how blessed Philly is for mostly eschewing big chain stores and championing its numerous fine independent bike shops. Trophy Bikes comes in at a close second- their staff are just as professional and knowledgeable-- but you can't beat Bicycle Therapy for panache. And their turnaround time is typically faster than expected.
Kudos to the friendly owner, Lee, and his awesome staff (esp. John and Jen up front and superhelpful tech guy Andy in the back) for fueling my newfound liberation from high gas prices and gridlock!
I went in and knew what I wanted. In and out and no one trying to sell me anything more expensive. Beings as though it's a couple blocks from my house, I will go again when I need more accessories (or decide to put street tires on my bike).
All of the guys and gals at Bicycle Therapy are knowledgeable about bikes - you just need to find the right guy for retail or repairs (hint, the repair guys are generally working on bikes).
They don't carry a ton of brands, but they do carry quality. Don't come here for a $100 Huffy. Come here for a quality bike, great service, and friendly banter. Come here if you want to watch the Tour de France and don't know what channel it is on. If you tell them what you want to get out of riding (basic transportation, road cycling, mountain biking, racing, etc.), they will help guide you to several appropriate choices. Then test drive. If you need air for your tires, there is a free air hook-up outside.
If (when) you buy a bike here, do get the service plan for three years. That way you can get your bike tuned each year at the start of the season with no additional labor charges (other than unusual repairs - ask them in the store).
If you have kids, they have a good selection of bikes, tricycles, helmets, etc. for the kids too.
knowledgeable staff. these guys read up on their shit, and they ride. get that second part? yeah, they ride. i think thats just as important as knowing what your talking about (you know the guys that just sit around and read bicycling mag).
Great service. I went in with a friend and they let him test ride a few bikes. They were kind enough to make adjustments more than once too. I picked up a cycle computer here and lost a part for it a month later. The shop dude dug around in his parts bin and hooked me right up. These guys are legit.
If you are looking for a Bianchi, Specialized, or an Orbea check these folks out.
p.s. they aren't cheap. it cost a lot of money to carry the inventory they have. you should appreciate that and be cool with spending a few bucks more.
My first impression upon entering the shop was, "WOW, it's CLEAN, ORGANIZED, SPACIOUS, and BRIGHT!" This is the first shop I've been to in Philly that didn't look like some dude's garage, every inch crammed with stuff in a more or less random fashion.
I was helped right away (a simple flat fix) and the guy was extremely nice and thorough. He noticed something was too tight on the wheel and offered to fix it, telling me how much it would cost upfront. When I got back on the road I noticed a definite improvement. Better still, they were cheaper than Frankenstein and seemed comparable to Firehouse (hard to tell because I usually get a thorn resistant tube which they were out of in my size plus the extra $5 for adjusting the wheel). Still not as cheap as North Philly Bicycles.
I checked out their bikes for sale - beautiful, shiny, and expensive. I'm more a Craigslist kind of girl myself, but it doesn't hurt to browse and they had a decent selection.
Finally, extra pluses for Yrock on the radio and the adorable pup.
Ok, I would not normally give a shop a poor rating, except here I have experienced repeated lack of customer service, which is exceptional for such an expensive shop. I am going to have to go against the grain. And here is why. My first few times were fine (I am an avid cyclist), but one time I was running low on air, so as a returning customer, I decided to stop by to fill up. Well they have a free air hose outside, which is righteous. However, it only accepts schrader valves, and when I asked if they had an adapter, they told me $2 to buy one. I was on a joy ride and didnt have my wallet with me. I had to kindly beg to just borrow one. Okay, so not a big deal. Another time, I was simply looking for a cheap single speed chain for an old junker in my line-up of bikes. All of the employees were standing around in crocs and Bono glasses, ignoring me, although they seemed to be doing nothing. I waited and waited, not wanting to bother them, although standing right in front of them and kept asking for a chain. Someone helped me, great. But then he (apparently mistaking me for their traditional yuppie clientele) proceeded to repeatedly tell me I had to cut the chain. I assured him I HAD a chain tool, and as such just needed the chain. And repeated myself 2 more times, that I know that I need to break the chain to length, and it was not my first time to the rodeo. This whole exchange took 20 minutes of precious time, when I was trying to get a bike ready for an afternoon booze cruise. Strike 2. The final straw came when a friend of mine was looking all over the city for the bottom bracket he needed, and they had it in stock. He spoke to them a few times, and we headed over right at closing, as we were coming from work. They assured him they had it and they were holding it for him. We get there and they are closed by 10 minutes. The employees were hanging out in the shop, and we knocked on the window having spoken to them within the last half hour. They told us they were closed. We explained we had just called, and informed them we could pay cash, because we had a night-time adventure lined up and needed this bottom bracket. They refused. Strike three. I am glad the other posters had better experiences, but I will not go back there. I fully support our independent bike shops, but not when their service is worse than Performance.
As a straight guy masquerading as a bear, I have nothing of substance to add to the conversation about the hot guys who work here. However, I definitely agree that Bicycle Therapy provides quality service without the attitude nor did they try to upsell me when I came here to get my bike tuned up. There was a dog snoozing by the parts section the two times that I came by last summer, but I don't know whether he still comes by to hang out.
You can't go wrong at Bicycle Therapy. Their friendly, knowledgeable staff won't try to sell you on a bike that's not for you, whether you're a dedicated cyclist looking for top quality products or just someone looking to get in shape. With a reputation like that, why go anywhere else?
When I had my bike shipped from Portland, I called around to different bikes stores in Philly and surrounding areas to see how long it would take for them to assemble it. I ended up bringing my bike (in pieces) to Bicycle Therapy because they said their turnaround time was around 5-7 days. Well, guess what? They had it done in two days! I give Bicycle Therapy's service department five stars for being so speedy and nice (and not to mention cute).
Was doing the browsing of reviews and had to throw my 2 cents in about Bicycle Therapy as well. I was embarrassed when I brought my crappy old 2nd hand bike in here to get fixed up, and was pleased that the boys didn't even blink an eye at it. And got it back within 2 days at an really reasonable price. The bikes in the shop are expensive, but the little that I do know about bikes, seem like really the top of the line. And yes the staff is cute as hell.
