Biba's Café is located on the Hale Koa Hotel grounds. Only hotel guests (Department of Defense employees and their families) are allowed to dine here. Don't let that restriction make you go and think this place is more exclusive than what it really is!
We ate dinner here this evening. We had the choice to be either inside or outside. You would think, well it's Hawaii, so it must be a no-brainer - eat outdoors. But despite the afternoon sunshine, by evening there was a definite chill in the air. Yes, even in Hawaii. A sweatshirt or something equivalently warm would be nice right about now.
I don't know how they do it in a vacation destination such as Waikiki, but nothing on the menu was more than $22.
First, we had tossed salads. Poor JP, his "sweet mango" dressing was more like "sour ginger", so he made me share my ranch dressing with him.
Also they brought us warm complimentary bread, to be dipped in the olive oil that was already available in a bottle on the table. Bread with just olive oil seems crude so we asked for some balsamic vinegar to blend with the oil. Yes! Our waitress was able to immediately produce a bottle of the vinegar.
We both ordered the Surf and Turf. JP ordered the crab legs to go with his sirloin steak, and I had the garlic buttered shrimp with my steak. Our waitress let us substitute steamed vegetables for the rice. Our steaks were very good and so were the vegetables.
JP announced that he was tired of the hassle of cracking open crab legs and would not likely ever order them again. I thought, the light has been seen.
I had the shrimp with angel hair pasta dish here. It wasn't the best, but wasn't the worse that I've had. The pasta was a bit past al dente and the sauce was really oily/buttery but the shrimp was big and plump and I just arrived on island and was starving so it did it's job. The outdoor seating was perfect in good weather and our waiter was really nice. He always had a big smile on his face that was really infectious. They had a pretty extensive menu of the usual cafe/diner menu of pizzas, sandwiches, and standard entrees.
