I came here with my coworkers for a team building event. The instructors were patient and very skilled. I really appreciated the hands off approach - they will help guide you if you want help but will also allow you to tap into your creative juices.
We did BYOB and had wine and cheese from trader joes to accompany our event.
To be honest the space was a little cramped, but everyone had a great time. I would definitely recommend coming here for an event (although I can't comment on price.)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Andrew C.San Francisco, CA78613860Feb 10, 2016
This place is a lot of fun. I know little to nothing about painting and came here for a company offsite and ended up leaving with a painting that others have described as "not bad" thus I consider it a success.
I definitely recommended booking this with a group of friends so you can find out and antagonize those who aren't as good as thou and also discover which of your friends are secretly incredibly talented and should quit their jobs and join an art studio.
The gals who run this place were an absolute hoot. They put up with a lot of shenanigans and are very quick to give you new paint supplies when you need them.
Pro-tip: wearing the Bob Ross wig (provided) increases your painting skills 3X -- trust me it's a must!
Would paint again.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Michèle S.Zürich, Switzerland129219441Dec 8, 2015
I organized a company offsite for 20 people and we had a fantastic time. We booked a private "Paint & Wine" event and the room in the mission (very close to bart) was the perfect size for a group of 20. What I really liked is that you can bring your own wine/drinks and snacks. They provided us a table to set up everything and encouraged us to refill while painting.
Once you book an event, you have access to a gallery of pictures you can choose from. The instructions were line by line but they encourage you to experiment with different texture and colors.
All in all it was a great experience and I can highly recommend the classes for a fun event.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Priscilla L.San Francisco, CA0132May 5, 2015
In a world of hustle and bustle and stress, I always appreciate how time seems to pass at an enjoyable pace while at Beyond Canvas. I love having the chance to unplug and focus on an artistic activity for a few hours in an intimate, non-judgmental setting.
I've taken three classes so far at Beyond Canvas and enjoyed all of them (Chinese Inking & Painting 101 + 102 taught by Candace and Star Wars Paint Night taught by Annie & Chris). All 3 were scheduled on weeknights and it was a great way to unwind from the work day. I love the space that Beyond Canvas creates--one that encourages creativity and exploration for anyone with the willingness to try. Regardless of your level of expertise (from absolutely no art experience to tons), you'll have a great time here. Plus, all the supplies (and some wine) are provided for you! The instructors are open to all questions and never judge you for the quality of your work. It's the perfect way to try something new and meet new people along the ride or to have a creative date/friends night.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sumant C.TX, TX42143Nov 13, 2015
I purchased Bob Ross - Winter Wonderland - Fri. Nov 13, 7pm.
TL;DR Cheaters. Says bob ross style and provided water based acrylic paint with thick flat , thick round and thin brush. (we had to ask for knife). I left in between when she started introduction of brushes and paint. - No Oil paints, color was not of bob ross palette, showcased painting which we were supposed to paint was not of bob ross style.
Waste of time.
Drove from menlo park to city for 1 and half hour, parked in garage near by, reached there at 6:25 PM. Small door was closed and I was wondering where the place is, it is above SF auto. In 5 minute a girl came and opened the door and asked me to wait til 6:50 white she setups upstairs. I went upstairs around 6:55 and signed up. showed me the snacks (some chips, grapes, salsa) and wine. On table there was Canvas,in paper dish there were 5 basic acrylic paint, brushes covered in paper napkin (thick flat brush may be no 3, thick round brush, and thin brush, no knife) and glass of water to wash the brush. Other 4 people arrived we asked for knife as this was bob ross style class. We settled with aprons and bob ross wig. She started with brush introduction and I was wondering where is fan brush, 2 inch or 1 inch brush. When she said these colors are acrylic and water base, me and other girl both said we are here for oil paint. I realised this is not right. I told "I was expecting oil paint" she said "No this is acrylic paint". So I replied" I am not here to learn acrylic paint. This is not bob ross style and I would not like to spend my time on this."
Request to other 4 people. Let me know what happened after I left. Did you guys finish the painting?Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Sumant,
Thanks for leaving your review. The class is actually still going on at the current time you are writing this review, and I was informed you actually left before the class started. I wish you would have stayed for the workshop - you might have really enjoyed yourself.
We corresponded via email where I answerd all the questions you had prior to the workshop. If there were any additional questions or concerns, of course you could have reached out to me directly and I would have addressed any issues asap.
Beginning painting classes are not in oil, and all 'paint and wine' classes are in acrylic. Oil painting classes have a much longer duration and material cost, although we do offer these as well if you would like to take one instead. The Bob Ross workshop is one of our most popular classes and all of our 'Bob Ross Inspired landscapes' workshops are meant to resemble his style while providing a fun and inspirational twist to your average mundane painting class. We usually offer palette knifes about 1/2 way through the workshop as beginning painters sometimes get frustrated with them from the start. For the door - we prefer our instructors to set up and open 10 minutes before for safety reasons. Again - you can reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
Thanks!
Candace

Great way to unwind and a fun experience. I came for the Wine & Painting class for Banksy with two friends. We had fun and got some fun paintings out of the experience and the instructors were very nice and helpful.
However, I have to give this only 3 stars based on price and value. Tickets were $50 each for the class and we were told that included supplies and some history on the artist. The history lasted about one minute and clearly no research was done on the artist. When taking a Banksy stencil class, I'd expect to have more options than just one Banksy stencil and a few that are for Star Wars. It limited the creativity and options of what you could create and didn't really let us have options. They also ran out of some of the color paints. Considering you can purchase Banksy stencils online for only $4-7, I'd expect to have a few to choose from. Plus, it's BYOB so we ended up spending $170 in total for three people. I probably could recreate the class at home for a few friends for much less.
If the cost of the classes were to come down I'd definitely reconsider.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Updated Response 10/13/15:
We have made changes to the class based on your feedback. Since your workshop we have cut many more stencils to choose from and we have updated the information leading into this class.
Thank you for helping us make better classes for everyone and we hope to see you at one of our workshops in the future. - Rachel A.Kensington, CA92515Oct 6, 2015
Beyond Amazing!! Candace is such a wonderful presence, and she is great at putting everyone at ease. I hired her to come to a work party at my house, where we all painted a picture of a co-worker (who is moving to Shanghai) with her dog. It was so fun -- and successful! People who didn't think they could do it, created beautiful art! And everyone's piece was different, which was a surprise since Candace broke it all down for us, step-by-step. Great fun, and now I want to host a painting party with my friends!!

We were painting The Scream by Edvard Munch in Vinyl wine bar.
It was tons of fun! Great activity, awesome instructor, interesting crowd and we even had a special offer - free glass of wine that night! :)
I haven't painted since kindergarten but in the class I was able to discover my hidden talents :) My gorgeous replica of The Scream is now hanging on my wall. Overall, It's FUN! Highly recommended!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - M A.San Mateo, CA14814Sep 20, 2013
Beyond the Canvas accommodated my small team of three in an off-site. Though, I think the event would have worked equally well for a large team.
We did an an "En Plein Air" painting class at Lands End. The day was absolutely perfect no wind and clear blue skies. Our instructor Candace brought all the supplies and her instruction was just what we needed to do some artwork.
Very relaxing and fun time was had by all. I'd recommend this to any team that wants a fun, creative, and engaging off-site.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Elaine N.Daly City, CA12211Aug 24, 2015
Candace and Annie were great instructors for our Shibori dye class. They made everything super easy and were so helpful if you needed any extra assistance. They give you 4 test clothes so you can try different shibori methods, and then you get to dye your cloth of choice like a shirt or apron. They have a great studio space in the mission, so it's the perfect activity after grabbing dinner on Valencia. This would be a great date night activity, team bonding experience, or just a thing to do with some friends.
