Upon my first visit, it seemed reminiscent of a place called Corner Bakery, which is like the littlest sibling of Maggiano's and Macaroni Grill. This place though just blew Corner Bakery out of the water. In the front, there's a little help-yourself bread basket with slices of the daily bread and a thing of butter. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the food is nothing but quality and quantity. Another bonus is that their pepsi tastes better than most fountain pepsis out there.
My first sandwich there was Gino's Grinder and still reigns as my favorite sandwich. My gf likes Avi's Avo, and today I tried Pauly's Pesto which was also quite good but not as good as the Grinder.
I forgot to mention that their desserts were pretty good too, as well as loaves of bread to take home with you.
A great sandwich place/bakery! The sandwiches are delicious on all the various fresh-baked bread. The desserts are tempting, but I'm always too full to have any -- one of these days, I'll have to go just for dessert! I've fairly recently discovered that their soups are delicious, as well, especially in a bread bowl.
The sandwiches are big, and most cold items can be ordered in a half portion. They have various sides to choose from -- my favorite is the pasta salad. If you're thinking about pick-up, you can just call in your order and it'll generally be ready in about 10-15 minutes.
Casual atmosphere; you order at the register and take a little label (instead of a number) and find a seat. Your meal will find its way to you shortly. =)
Great sandwich place with a large menu selection and modern, cafe-style decor. I especially liked the exposed brick, and service was friendly and prompt. Plus they're conveniently located in a shopping center, next to the BEST bookstore I have ever visited (Bookmans).
You can make your sandwiches to order on their freshly baked bread. I must dock them some points for skimping on avocado on my veggie-on-sourdough (ONE meager sliver per half?!! Definitely NOT okay, ask for extra). But I otherwise found little fault in the delicious food, and the yummy (and huge) chocolate chip peanut butter cookie made up for the disturbing avocado incident.
Also they have a fantastic selection of breads (gotta try the rosemary), a nice display of pastries, and some tasty-sounding soups.
Will return.
Excessive quantities of excellent food. One of our families consistant lunch options.
I am surprised nobody has reviewed breakfasts at Beyond Bread! Their french toast is like no other and delicious. The breakfast sandwich, with everything and potato pancakes is fabulous. Best part is, there is enough for two to share! A real bargain. Their coffee is very good as well, much better than Starbucks to us.
I dream of this place. Being from Phoenix, I rarely make my way down to Tucson. BUT when I do, this place is on the top of my to-do list. The multigrain bread is so great, I often buy a loaf to bring back home with me. I wish they'd bring the franchise up to Phoenix!
Went here based on yelp reviews for local places to eat. Yummy! Caught the quiche just before they swapped to lunch and shared a beef and Brie Sarnie. Bread is chewy so you'll get jaw ache by the end but still want to keep going...
Very busy place...
Freshly baked authentic breads. Casual atmosphere, young coffee house crowd, not too loud. I went for breakfast and had a good omelet with parmesan bread and potato pancakes. Not a place for low carb diets, but if that is what you are looking for why are you be reading a review about a restaurant called Beyond Bread.
I had the parmesan bread and rye bread. Both were outstanding with excellent crumb and crust and a deep flavor.
I just had to come back and write a nostalgic review about Beyond Bread. I live in Seattle now and let me tell you... I have found NOTHING to compare here and people in this town know how to eat well. So Avi's Avo you are in my thoughts always and damn if I don't even miss the creme brulee.
Holy crap. For most things in Tucson having just a few reviews, Beyond Bread certainly has a ton. I wasn't expecting that when I pulled it up to review.
For those of you from outside Tucson, Beyond Bread is basically Panera Bread. You don't come here to buy bread, you come here to eat giant sandwiches, salads, and soup.
I tried the Gobble me Up turkey salad and the Chicken Salad. Both had a good topping to lettuce ratio (if you like your salads topping heavy). And the salads are massive. If I had known I could, I would have ordered a half. Even my husband, who is a big eater, didn't finish his chicken salad.
The quality of the food was good, but nothing about it particularly blew me away. It's your basic salad and sandwich place--reliable, lots of options, but nothing special.
I went to Beyond Bread with Kelly while visiting my sister in Tucson. The whole weekend, my sister's boyfriend talked this up as a great sandwich place, and it was. I was blown away by the size of the kitchen, about twice the size of the seating area, which made service almost instant. I had a basic salami sandwich, and they did it well.
They warned us that this would be the big meal of the day, we couldn't plan on a big dinner later. And again they were right. Each half a sandwich was as big as a normal sandwich from somewhere else. I left the complementary chips at my sister's, because I couldn't eat them.
The desserts looked fantastic, and we tried an eclair and fruit tort. We had to hold off a few hours to tackle them, but they were worth the wait.
Walking in, the place looked like a standard chain to me, but don't let the polished finish of the decor fool you. The food is great.
So...I'm a bit torn about Beyond Bread. My BF and I were visiting his sister and man in Tuscon, and they RAVED about this place. Unable to pass up the delicious carby goodness that is a sandwich, we went for lunch.
They warned us about the enormous portions, thankfully. I got a half sandwich with turkey/avocado/hummus/sprouts on Rustic bread and a bowl of Chicken Tortilla soup. I was very disappointed in the soup. More like packaged chicken veggie soup with a few tortilla strips on top. No spice, and just the wrong substance, all together. The soup comes with a choice of bread, too. I got the pumpernickel, which was just okay(but I didn't need all that bread anyway!) The sandwich was decent. Tasty bread and fresh ingredients. Nothing spectacular, though. I agree with yelper Katie T who compared it to Panera, although I think it's a bit better.
I would like to go again and maybe try something different.
We also got desserts to go. He had an eclair, and I the vanilla fruit torte. Both were okay. Just like our entire experience....
Okay.
Beyond Bread has Great Sandwhiches, breakfasts, pastries, muffins, and soups.
My favorite sandwiches are: Maya's market, Kalid's Curry.
They have a different muffin every day, and they are wonderful. Especially Raspberry. The cookies, banana bread and chocolate babka are delicious.
The soup is great (it's one of the places I love to go when I have a cold).
Also, my husband loves their coffee. They use a local coffee roaster.
When I forget to bring my lunch to work, I call ahead and pick up a sandwich, and it's super easy because I can walk to the pastry counter.
Beyond Bread's name sorta implies that it's a baker first, and they sell food as an afterthought... do not be fooled by this cleaver marketing scheme. This place is a lunchtime powerhouse that dishes up all the delectable goodies... salads, sandwiches, ect.
I got the soup in a breadbowl. It was pretty darn good, but nothing compared to fisherman's warf in SF.
I think Tucson is fundamentally a sandwich town: Eegees, Baggins, Bison Witches, Sausage Deli, heck even the Schlotzsky family moved here from Chicago in the late nineties (they live on the east side). This place, from the sandwiches I tried (only two, so go easy) isn't really anything special. Really good, but not run home and grab the kids because we are gonna mao down tonight! great...
Nice sandwiches and salads and yummy deserts. Not far from hwy 10 on the se end of Tucson.
Sandwiches fit for a king. No complaints. Plus I love the samples while waiting in line to order.

Why do I like Beyond Bread? Because they go beyond. Sandwiches so big I am beyond full. I had a tuna sandwich last time I was there that was huge. I ate the side that came with it about 3 hours later. I also had a cafe americano. It was beyond average coffee.
Service? I walked up to the counter with my cafe americano that had gotten cold and asked if they had a microwave. After I explained that I wanted to warm up my coffee they took it in back, warmed it and brought it back to my table. Beyond service.
They have free wifi and it is pretty fast...beyond wifi at most coffee houses.
Huge portions, fantastic salads and tantalizing sandwiches make Beyond Bread a simply great place for lunch. Sandwiches in particular are always piled high with fresh meat and cheese and sauce, breads are freshly baked in-house, and they even have a great bakery to purchase their wares in quantity (including batches of cookies, pies, pastries and loaves of bread).
The only gripe I have is queues can be quite long during lunchtime, and it's not rare to spend $10 on a sandwich and drink.
If you're on a budget, they have free bread, just be sure to grab it while it's crowded. Deserts are awful. Coffee is awful, bread is hard, low quality.
The food is average but dumb yuppies think this is the best place since Wall Street.
Employees are yapping, stuffing their mouths or ignoring you while there's a line.
Tables are left unclean. Employees are mostly acne faced un-hygenic teens (ie: cheap labor) who seemed to be picking their noses, drinking sodas, touching their hair, genital area, etc while I waited.
Probably less aggravation & cheaper to make it yourself, if you dumb yuppies can figure it out. I don't know what the catch is at Beyond Bread. It's Beyond me.
Definitely a really good place for sandwiches. OR, PITAWiches! I had a half of pablo's pavo and and curry chicken salad pita. Both were really good! Spent 12.50 for two halves, two sides, and a soda. Really tasty.
This was my first Beyond Bread. An indecisive persons worst nightmare, the menu options are fantastic and mind-boggling. I'm changing my mind up until the moment I have to order. The half-sandwich choice is wonderful. The breads are heavenly and the desserts stellar.
The lines can be long, but the staff is quick and efficient. I've never had to wait long for the food despite the crowd and have absolutely no complaints.
Veggie Girl has been to many sandwich places, usually as a last resort and rarely to satisfy some sandwich craving. Who craves sandwiches??
Veggie Girl will now.
Ollie's Original on a torpedo roll ( the little tooth symbol scared Veggie Girl who has more valuable teeth than jewelry at this point in her life so she changed the bread choice...)
Creamy, savory feta cheese; pure olive paste, balsamic dressing, crunchy red onion, dark green romaine lettuce and juicy tomato on that fresh roll. Yummy.
The Carnivore had something called a "Plain Jane" which is an insult to Janes everywhere. It was so far past "Plain." He had lots of layers of turkey, swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce and red onion on a crisp sourdough roll.
Unwrapping the white paper makes it more fun - sort of like getting a sandwich for Christmas. Now Veggie Girl has a Christmas list. She'll work on the naughty or nice part.
2 Delicious sandwiches, 2 bags of chips, 2 drinks and a heavenly concoction called a Magic Bar - $17.37.
Ok so I am here in Tucson, AZ in a business trip... I will be here for...hopefully not before Thanks Giving T.T .....
Anyways Beyond Bread is going to be my salvation throughout this trip... Ok so the first time I tried something from this place was when I got to the office and my co-worker and mentor was sooo nice to get me some lunch from this place... She got me a salad which I still don't know which one it is... but anyways I was lucky enough to get a hotel that is very near this restaurant. The cool part of this restaurant is that you get to try there breads in their glass sampler with butter...
So on Saturday I went there and ordered their soup of the day "Baked Potato and Bacon" with sour dough (wow this was the best soup i have ever had in my life I think!) and I also ordered Brad's Beef hot sandwich... ahhhh this was very good too ^_^ I was sooooooooooooooooo happy on Saturday.... sooo I decided to go again on Sunday
So on Sunday I went again and ordered "Angus Management" and the vanilla bean creme brule.... I have no idea why they forgot to add the italian salad dressing... anyways I was already back at the hotel when I noticed the missing dressing... I was disappointed.... i guess the creme brule saved their reputation even though I asked the guy that gave me the salad if I had a spoon in the bag for my creme brule and he told me yes but in fact there wasn't a spoon, so I had to eat my creme brule with a fork... anyways I will give them another chance since they did excellent on Saturday...
I would order a sandwich with just cheese and bunch of stuff on it. Yumm.... then one day, the Beyond Bread folks started automatically applying honey mustard onto the sandwiches. Umm....didn't I mention that I reaaaaaaallly don't like honey mustard?? I'd ask them nicely to NOT put any of that stuff on while ordering the sandwiches but the honey mustard always seems to find itself all spreaded out inside the sandwich....
OH! I forgot to mention that I broke my tooth there before. Yep. The tooth fairy was laughing her ass off at me. Cost me couple serious Ben Franklins to have my tooth fixed. Funny enough, a while later, I decided to join a friend to Beyond Bread for breakfast-- she had her meal, while I had simply coffee. I came to discover that the Beyond Bread folks were kind enough to iinclude specific warnings in the menu that "you may break a tooth while eating their bread!" Yay.
Guess the moral of the story is.... If you wanna go toothless, go to Beyond Bread!
Lots of choices to choose from. There's a sandwich for my every needs!
Fresh - Avi's Avo
Comfort - Maddy's Madness or Chad's Choice
Spicy - Joe's Jolt
Sweet - Bart's Bag
Lunch time is always busy and parking becomes a pain. If you want to avoid the long lines, call your order ahead, bypass the long ordering line, go to the phone-call-order pick-up register and pay for your meal.
Don't forget dessert! Fruit tarts, magic bars and gigantic chocolate chocolate chip cookies are only few of the deliciousness that they offer!
Felt a bit chain-like or corporate. Otherwise, awesome bread and sandwiches and sides. LOTS of bread choices...
Not a lot of veggie options...
Oh Beyond Bread, how I have missed you.
This was definitely a place that I took for granted when I lived in Tucson, but make no mistake, every time I visit, I go. I have no idea why I can't find a sandwich place like this in San Jose...but then again, Tucson is a great food town.
The sandwiches are lovely, priced right, and the fresh bread they use can't be beat. Sometimes I used to go there just to pick up a baguette or a loaf of whole wheat. Check out their website for what they're baking on the day of a visit - they have certain breads that they bake on certain days.
They are also very willing to make any substitutions for you - I know for a fact during Passover they'll make any sandwich on matzo or are perfectly okay with something other than chips.
The staff is always friendly and are happy to work there (I had quite a few friends that worked at BB over the years, had nothing but the nicest things to say about it).
Don't look to grab a sandwich from them at, say, 9pm - they close at 8 M-Sat, and 6 on Sunday. They also tend to get very, very busy during the lunch rush - call ahead, I know at the Campbell location they have a separate cashier for take-out orders, which makes things much easier.
So if you're visiting Tucson, make sure you go. It's a slice of the wonderful, family owned, high quality/cheap price amazement that is the Tucson dining scene.
Oh, and by the way, my personal fave - Betty's Brie, no mayo. Roast beef with brie and tomato on a baguette with BB's chips. $7.50 for a full sandwich (enough for 2). YUM!
I have a Maya's Market addiction. I don't go to Beyond Bread that often (I *have* to restrain myself), and when I do go, my craving for the Maya's Market has gotten so strong I can't order anything else. However, I know, by the looks on my companions faces, that they are always as happy with their choices as I am with mine.
While there, it's a good idea to grab a loaf of the fantastic bread (the multigrain is heavenly, but so are most...)
Aaron W. commented that it feels a bit chain like or corporate, and if by that he means streamlined and efficient, he's right. There are two locations, so I guess that makes it a chain, but with only two and only in Tucson, a short chain it is. The last reviewer also said that there weren't many veggie options. I guess I haven't noticed, since, again it's hard for me to make it past the Maya's Market (a vegetarian--not vegan--wonder), but glancing at the ridiculously long menu, I do see only 4 items with the veggie mark.. But they're so good, I am not sure it matters.
Also, the few times I have indulged in the desserts have been similarly amazing. mmmmmm.
This is the best sandwich place in Tucson. The first few times I went to Beyond Bread I was discouraged by the menu, and noticed a lot of sandwiches that included sprouts. However, there are a few really good non-fancy sandwiches on the menu with great hard crust bread. The Joel's Jolt is awesome.
Other than dinner time, this place is going to be really crowded. You won't find parking and you'll wait in line. Oh, and it closes early just like every other place in senior citizen town... I think 6pm weekdays 8pm weekends.
i'm a pretty big fan of a good sangwich (lol, ally said sangwich) and beyond bread is pretty up to par. i get random cravings for the stan's stack...mmmm tasty goodness. i totally agree with amanda b...it is an indecisive person's worst nightmare. but us indecisive ppl can't resist it!
HOWEVER, i do have a few problemos with this location, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. i have been there multiple times and something seems to go wrong every time. here are some good rules of thumb via trial and error by this silly monkey.
1. make sure you know what you want before they put your order in. indecisive monkeys who change their mind after the order has been put in are treated with derision and scorn and then wait half an hour for their shit only to get the wrong fucking thing.
2. if you only want enough for one meal, order the half sandwich...and know which sandwiches you can GET as a half. i had a bad run in when i ordered a sandwich that could only come as a whole and then told the girl that i couldn't eat a whole sandwich. after she changed my order, she put in a WHOLE stan's stack and i ended up really REALLY angry and couldn't even enjoy my sangwich. (see point number 1)
3. don't order the fruit tarts...yes, they look tasty, but they are NOT worth the money. trust me on this one...i got the chocolate and the vanilla and both were a big ol' disappointment.
4. be prepared to circle the parking lot, desperately searching for parking. then, after finding said parking, be prepared to dodge cars on your way in to the store.
i hope these rules help. i can honestly say that this place is pretty decent and i stop in every few months...little expensive for my taste, but definitely worth it, especially if you are dropping into the bookmans next door.
I happened to do a bit of Tucson yelp research before going there this time. This seemed like the place to go. We happened to drive past it on Christmas Eve and it happened to be about lunch time. This place was packed, but the line moved fast. I shared a Maya something and it was excellent.
We also bought a loaf of walnut cranberry to go and ate with cheese the next day...it was perfect.
Good place, not the best sandwich place I've ever been, but nothing to complain about.
I don't know how they got the Zagat rating.
The sandwiches are good-- but sometimes the bread is so hard it cuts your mouth. Othertimes the sandwiches are just too dry.
The creme brulee didn't have the sugar fully brulee'd and thus, it was watery (yuck!!).
I'd go there again but don't expect AMAZING results. It's just the best place because Tucson doens't offer much else... lines are usually up to the door.
I love this place. After months of trying to twist my arm into going, a coworker of mine just brought a couple of sandwiches from here.
I nearly cried thinking that I could have been enjoying these for a much longer time. Ah, well. The place is very clean, they sport their wares more proudly than the high school quarterback's mom does his trophies, and EVERYTHING smells de-lish.
You might want to make sure you know what you want before you order, and if you go right before the lunch rush, you should be able to get some good seats (unless you're like me and forget everything 'cuz you're sampling the free bread while you're in line....). The prices may seem a little pricey, but they are well-justified! ..... i have yet to try anything there that I didn't like.... I just don't like that the cashiers are only friendly and helpful if you're well-informed..... I never am, so I get the sneers and evil eyes.......
YUM! Beyond Bread was beyond good (rim shot). I'd wanted to come here for ages and although I'd seen their menu online, I still had a hard time deciding what to order. There were soooooo many choices that sounded really tasty. My apologies to the girl taking the orders. She must really hate people like me.
Being married has some definite perks like always having a date and always being able to share food. I'm particularly excited about the latter. I ordered a Kalid's Kurry (Curry chicken salad {chicken, celery, scallion, curry powder, salt, white pepper, mayonnaise, raisins, jicama, lemon juice} toasted almonds, lettuce in a Wheat Pita) while my wonderful and sharing husband ordered a Pablo's Pavo (Southwest turkey salad {fresh roasted turkey, Anaheim chiles,
cilantro, celery, red onion, chipotle chiles, mayonnaise and
sour cream} and tomato in a Wheat Pita. We each got half of each. Too much food for me but still a good deal.
My daughter decided she was hungry enough to tackle half a normal sandwich rather than order off the kid's selection. She ordered half a Fran's Fromage (Brie, lettuce and tomato on a baguette). She took one bite and decided she the baguette was too big to bite into. I knew it. The staff was nice enough to give us some pita bread for her instead at no extra charge. They gave us two even if it was just half a sandwich. Super nice of them.
I already can't wait to come back. I think I already know what I want to try next . . . . .
Oh! I got to use a "You've Been Yelped" card for the first time here. I hope they look up the reviews!
I love everything I've ever had from here (Maya's Market, cupcakes, fruit tart - mmmm....).
It's a good thing that there isn't a Beyond Bread location closer to my home or work - I'd be spending my whole paycheck here!
This place is a treasure. In 20 years it will still be here and be one of Tucson's distinct and distinguished locations. Sandwiches, breads, soups and pastries are all great tasting. But let's not underestimate free bread and butter while you stand in line!
I've had the roast beef, ham and cheese and meatball subs, all are worth the trip. I like the cole slaw also. It's a peppery surprise.
They also make a mean Russian tead cake.
Don't know if they qualify for wait service, you order a counter and they give you a food related flag that you carry to the table. They find you by the flag. So it's a half wait, git it, half wait.
I prefer the ambience at the Speedway and Wilmot location, plus you have the added benefit of being near Bookman's, so why night make a night of it?
Everything is good here.
great menu for all kinds, and spectacular service. i always stop by here if someone with me hasn't been yet. be careful not too get a super hard bread though!
Delicious food! Don't be deterred if there's something on a sandwich you don't like. They're good about holding or substituting things when you ask politely. Be ready to be full after eating here!
best sandwich place ever. anyone who gives beyond bread less then 5 stars needs to have their head examined. or maybe forced to eat stickler's sandwiches in phoenix for a month.
absolutely incredible array of inventive and healthy sandwiches made with the best artisan bread and ingredients. my favorites include avi's avo, bart's bag on ciabatta (turkey, brie, and honey mustard), charlie's chicken (chicken, bbq sauce, onions, and tomatoes on a garlic roll), and the thursday special(vegetarian cheese sandwhich with balsamic vinegar on foccacia).
they also have great iced tea and arbuckle's coffee. you can sit there all day and drink it by the gallons, peruse the internet with free wi-fi, casually eat one of the best sandwhiches ever, and top if off with a gourmet dessert.
did i mention the gourmet desserts yet? oh man. each beyond bread location has a master baker in charge of bread making and a master chef in charge of desert making. magic bars, macaroons, creme puffs, creme brulle, lemon bars, tiramasu, and a host of other cakes and such that you would normally only see while you are prancing down main street in that recurring Desert Towne dream that i'm sure you have as often as I do.
they also have incredible designer decor, a great giant patio, and play real jazz music for the most part. makes city bakery in phoenix look and taste like an overpriced subway.
and all of this at really great prices make the beyond breads two of my favorite places on the planet. i miss them bad. please open one in phoenix, you would make an absolute killing if you opened one around central phoenix or the biltmore area.
