Its gettin hot in here (so hot)
So take off all your clothes
I am gettin so hot, I wanna take my clothes off
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's how I felt earlier today at BevMo. Not because Nelly was turning me on but because it was super hot in there. And, hot is not a great way to store wine & beer.
But, anyway, you can definitely score a lot of bargains at BevMo. But, it pays to know what you're looking for as the staff isn't always that knowledgeable.
update:
Today I had the unsettling experience of being told by the BevMos sales clerk, "I know you guys buy a lot here... you shop here a LOT." That's right, kids... a LOT.
Bevmo has a great selection of beers and wines, they also have great prices. My roomate and shop here at least twice per month. I recommend it.
So I called this distributor trying to track this one particular beer down that I had seen on one of my favorite websites (www.uncrate.com) and they let me know that this BevMo had purchased 9 cases the day before. Awesome.
Came here over the weekend and ironically, one of the beers on the tasting list happened to be the beer that I was looking for. The Wailua Wheat brewed by the Kona Brewing Company. Came in and took a while looking at all the shelves and the coolers. I couldn't find the beer. I had spoken with the "Beer Dude" the day before and he was super nice and helpful. I asked for him, but he was out to lunch when I came to the store.
So I was asked to wait and another person would help me. I waited and waited and waited. Almost 30 minutes I waited (Yep, I really wanted that beer). Finally, Eugy found it when he was walking around. No one ever came to help me. We were checking out and the guy kept apologizing. He even gave us 5% for being so patient. YAY!!
We bought a case of that beer. It sure is good! You can actually taste the tartness of the passion fruit that it was brewed with. Really good.
Hey! I like to throw the occasional garage party. Who doesn't?
Once you secure the DJ (LA Dream Team's in the house, can you say yo baby yo baby yo..), pass out all of the flyers and buy all of the chips and dip, you're left one one task to complete---BUY ALCOHOL!
And BEVMO is your #1 source for getting it if you want a fresh and def party.
Where else can you find an array of spirits such as:
* Wine coolers and Alize for the ladies.
* Mickey's and St. Ides for the guys.
* Kamikaze shots for everyone!
* And ZIMA for the not so sures?
So if you want to be bangin', BEVMo is Chyea boyyy!!!!
___________________
In all seriousness, they actually still carry Zima! Unreal.
It's a great place for that last second present.
Ample parking available.
Plus, BK down the block if you need a whopper with that 40.
Do you know how freakin' hard it is to find parking at the other BevMo!s in the city?
5 Stars for the parking lot.
5 Stars for the buy one, get one for 5 cents deal on wine.
5 Stars for restocking the Abita Amber just days after I cleaned them out of their supply.
5 Stars for contributing to my downfall in my on-going quest to be a productive member of society.
Whoa! Way above my expectations with this location at Bayshore!
This BevMo is HUGE with its own parking lot. It's organized and super clean especially in this neighborhood. Plenty of wine, beers, alcohol-related items to choose from. The selection is SOOO HUGE that I get confused hahah!
I picked up some of the tastiest wine/sake from this location, and I can spend hours here browsing what we should be drinking tonight with my dinner!
BevMo - short for Beverages and More - is a west-coast chain which sells alcohol, smoking products, and party supplies like drinking glasses, food trays, and cheese.
The Bayshore location is fancy compared to other liquor stores I've been to: it's well-stocked, well-lit, and CLEAN. It wasn't crowded that day (Saturday afternoon) so there was plenty of parking.
I had a hankering for Soho Lychee liquor (as of right now, it's impossible to get in Pennsylvania) so friends and I went off on a semi-wild goose chase, calling many stores until we hit BevMo Bayshore. The first few locations had either one or zero bottles left, but Bayshore had three. (For the curious, we bought their three remaining bottles.) My friend also scored us a discount with his BevMo membership card. (Note to self: get one of those next time I'm in the area.)
Looking for alcohol that's not terribly obscure? BevMo probably has it.
1. Outstanding selection of beers & wines from around the world. From local micro-brews to the Philippines' finest, San Miguel Beer!
2. Every imaginable liquor/spirit you might want/need.
3. All the mixers, condiments, garnishes you might want/need.
4. Snacks, cheese, dried meats, glassware, gift-sets, cigars, even fresh LIMES at the checkout stand.
5. NOT CROWDED at all (like Costco) on a Saturday afternoon. Almost no waiting in line.
6. Good prices (just a slight, but reasonable, markup from wholesale).
7. Well-stocked. The only thing they did not have on the shelves were Patron Silver and Stoli Blueberry. But they did have Bacardi Red Peach.
8. They have a HUGE parking lot! (Key, because: (a) I hate to pay for parking; and (b) the thought of having to lug a case of liquor down the street to a faraway spot, or on the bus is absurd.)
I'm a big fan!
Bevmo has a terrific selection of wine and beer. Their nickel sale is one of my favorite times of year. You also can't beat their online order and pick up in-store delivery option.
HOWEVER, their parking lot is a bit industrial and can lead to problems. Beware- I went in on a spring Monday afternoon for 10 minutes to pick up my order and came back to find my car window had been bashed and my laptop bag had been stolen (luckily the laptop wasn't in there but a bunch of personal items only of value to me). The manager has been super helpful and offered to look around the area should the thief discard any of my things. Make sure if you park in their lot that you keep EVERYTHING out of your car.
We knew we were in good hands for birthday party supply shopping when an amicable, hirsute fellow with a name tag that said, "Beer Dude," approached us and ushered us to the keg room. I was like a kid in a very cold candy store!!
The list:
*Champagne for the work colleagues and sophisticated friends
*Keg for keg stands, with good beer instead of Nat Light (b/c we're in our 30s and can afford it now, yo) and keg cups
*Wine for the winos
*Rum to make a cold SF night feel like a tropical summer elsewhere
*Vodka for the martini-lushes and vodka soda-drinkers
*Tequila for the 20-somethings
*Jack Daniels for the hard core kids
*Sugar Free Redbull for the club kids (b/c unless you're a crack head or like going to bed before all the fun stuff happens, this is your best friend)
*Nuts for people who require more than martini olives for dinner
*Mixers
*A million 10 lb bags of ice to keep all the booze cold on Saturday and my liver iced on Sunday
Costco is probably somewhat cheaper for the higher-end wine and for hard licks, but for efficient, one-stop party shopping (with easy parking!), look no further. The best part is this has to be the only place where you can fill two grocery carts with every manner of spirits ever distilled and not feel like you are a keg stand away from an intervention, b/c there is always someone there buying even more than you!
One-stop shopping for everything party related. The only things they were missing were 1) lemons (although they did have limes); and 2) checkout people with a sense of humor (although a helpful rep with the name tag "Beer Dude" more than made up for that.
Only a 10 min drive from my house is the ultimate place for booze shopping! With prices for the big bottles of booze matching those at Costco this is a great alternative for those who hate the long lines at the SOMA Costco. They have an awesome tequila selection and often have some real good deals on some lesser known brands.
They also have their own parking lot!
San Francisco has an impressive selection of wine shops, but Bevmo still holds its own. Particularly because you can order your booze online and they'll have it all in a box for you when you get to the store. This allows you to take your time, look for sales, read Wilfred Wong's reviews, decide how much booze you really need, etc, all from the comfort of your own couch.
Also, I have yet to find another store with Bevmo's fabulous beer and, even more importantly, root beer selection. Plus, there's always parking. Even us city folk need some good ol' suburbia-strength convenience once in a while.
This is the closest location to my house (it's a *bit* industrial-ghetto out here), but there's also branches on Van Ness, Geary, and in Colma.
Jesus Christ this place has a lot of booze. Trust me, they really do.
For me it's an IPA emporium, but it's an emporium for all other manner of wine, spirits, beverages, cigars and snacks. They have beer from around the world you just can't find anywhere else. They have lots of parking. This place just really has a lot of alcohol from Alaska to Russia and everywhere in between. Stacks and shelves and boxes of booze! You can get kegs here, and chips, and salsa, and cheese, and olives, and bottle openers, and probably a cigar cutter! And vermouth! Blessed covenant of the Lord this is one place to stock up on absolutely any and everything you could possibly need to throw one motherfucking blockbuster of a party where everyone gets really, really fucked up.
Edit - it was pointed out to me by a fellow Yelper that this chain is a real challenge (threat?) if you are an independent wine merchant; I guess they are the equivalent of a Borders, Barnes and Noble or maybe even Walmart to small wine shops and liquor stores, should that influence my review? I don't know. The rating was based on the the place itself and not its corporate nature.
Me: "Dude, do you know where this place is?"
D: "I thought it was right there on Bayshore."
Me: "Yeah, but have you seen the neighborhood? If I don't make it home, assume I'm dead ..."
Wow, talk about taking your life in your hands to pick up some alcohol for a party at a great price. Well, since you see I'm writing the review, you can tell I made it out alive. I've got to report, however, that this place, ugly as it may be, is awesome. If you're throwing a party with too many guests and need to stock up on alcohol of any kind, this is the place for you.
Aisles and aisles of wine, beer and the hard stuff ... selection is surprisingly large, prices are surprisingly low (got to get the BevMo card, though [free]) and they've got all the trinkets and trims you forgot to even put on your list. I got out of there ready to water down my forty guests for under $100. Yeah, really.
Beyond everything they offer, this place is quite entertaining. I've never seen so many alcoholics outside of a bar in daylight at one time. Just walk the aisles and you'll catch that musty alcohol smell and the droopy eyes of their Saturday morning clientele!
Five stars for the store itself, minus one for having to risk my life leaves you with a solid four stars. Check 'em out, but if you're timid like me, take a friend!
Great Bevmo. For the most part, they have a great helpful staff. The 5 cent sales rock and as noted above, you can put together an order on line and come and pick it up. They have a great selection of weird stuff too. I love Pastis and they have three different brands. Best of all, its convenient to the Mission.
This store is so much better then I imagined! If I was an alcoholic, I would apply for a job and rent space across the street. The tequila selection is mind blowing
You can't afford to not shop at BevMo if you drink like I do.
I'm glad I thought of reviewing this place, because it's exposed me to the other BevMo reviewers who, I have to say, seem like a quality bunch. In fact, I haven't gotten so excited about other people since pledging the fraternity. I think I'll ask some of them to be friends with me.
Here's a tip just for you: If Burger King is your thing, the BK next door to BevMo has about the nicest staff of any BK in the city. The food ain't as bad as some and they've got a self-serve soda fountain. Booze and Burger King - that's a winning combination.
5 stars for convenient parking & helpful staff...
But negative 1 star because of location and their selection isn't quite as extensive as the VanNess store.
The neighborhood sucks but this place always has parking and it's easy for me to get to. Great selection of wine, scotch, beers, whiskey, you name it. They even have a cigar collection. The service isn't so great and they lock a lot of stuff up so if you get something expensive you have to ask for it at the register. How do you walk out with bottles of liquor?
A great selection of beers. I especially like to have several kinds of hefeweizen to choose from (my fave is the Erdinger -- I discovered it at the German restaurant Suppenkuche), and if you're into Belgian beers, they have tons of those, too. They also sell a bunch of flavors of those Torani syrups, cheaper than at Safeway, and in the larger size bottle. Plus, they have wine and cheese tastings, although I've never gotten my act together enough to figure out when they're happening and actually show up. For wine, I still shop at Trader Joe's, but this place rocks for beer.
BevMo is Disneyland for adults. The first time I went here, I went down each and every aisle even though all I needed was vodka. I had to know exactly what they had to offer for my next visit!
How can you go wrong at a place with cheap booze in every size you could ever need? Mini bottles for stocking stuffers? They have them all. Gigantic jugs of hard liquor for your alcoholic buddies? Check and double check!
Besides the obvious Grey Goose and Patron Silver, faves include mixers like the Soho Lychee Liqueur and Stirrings Lavender Martini Essence.
Oh and if you're throwing a big party and need tons of shot glasses, they sell little plastic ones that make cleanup a breeze.
Big friggin' bottles of liquor with handles on 'em. That's what you'll find here... No foofy shit like a .75 mL of anything. This is only for the hardcore drunk on a mission to turn his apartment into a blurred vomit station for the benefit of his friends. Everything you need to piss off the whole block this weekend.
The wine selection at the Geary location is superior. And while they are very fast with the internet order pick ups, the place is notoriously hard to get to off the freeway. But I have no sense of direction anyways so it's mostly my fault.
The one plus, while Geary and Colma always run out of Murphy's and Guinness, these guys never do, and always have 5 or 6 cases available with one-hour notice.
Great selection of beer, wine, liquor, and even sodas, with some snacks. Definitely sign up for the BevMo card, because that's how you get the discounts. This month they have a bunch of 2 for 1 wine, but only with the card.
i cant believe i didnt know there was a bevmo so close to my house, and on the way home from the train station, sort of. it is kind of a bitch to find, but once i pull into the parking lot i get that happy feeling in my pants.
bevmo is awesome. if you are into microbrews, its a good place to find beers you haven't had before. or obscure beers you cant find in most places. the selection at this location isnt nearly as extensive as the mountain view location, but its still damn good. and they usually have something interesting on sale. which gives me another happy feeling in my pants.
