LOVE LOVE LOVE!!
My son's birthday celebration was rained out last summer and we had to come up with a new plan and new cake and the ladies at Betty Bakery were so helpful and skilled in putting together and VERY impressive Elmo cake for 40 people in less than 4 days for me! (That's 3 of the stars right there!!)
The cake it self was soo nice! It was a vanilla cake that was light and moist, many asked for their card at the end of the party and the fondant topping wasn't thick and rubbery like some other's I've had. The buttercream was out of this world AMAZING!! I'm very picky when it comes to cakes and normally like things dense and sweet but this was just refreshing.
Will definitely order for here again! -

Short and simple.
BEST red velvet cake I have ever had. ($5)
BEST carrot cake I have ever had. ($4)
I HATE cake but I love Betty's cakes.
If you had the option to pay 5 bucks for a food epiphany, you better jump on it. Go, Eat, Win. -

I have been searching for the best chocolate cake and red velvet cake in NYC.... and have come to the conclusion after tasting almost everything out there that BETTY has the Bestest CHOCOLATE CAKE and RED VELVET in the world!
I used to think the Two Boots chocolate cake was the best... until we learned it came from BETTY!!!
It's always a tough decision now when I go there to get something sweet- so torn between the two! I wish there was a way to get both at once!
Service is great! Also had the strawberry shortcake- amazing!!!
This is a great go to bakery- have everything you need/want! -

I caught a New York Break and live right around the corner from this neighborhood treasure which is worth a trip from Jersey. Wow!! Like my favorite West Coast Bakery, Franny's Cup and Saucer in Point Arena, Betty's is an owner operated boutique bakery putting out works of art which you eat then lick your fingers. Cathy and I have ordered Betty's holiday cakes in pumpkin and Yule log form and I have bribed people with Betty's Twinks and Dings. Hot chicks go gooey and manly men go Metro over velvet cupcakes and blonde brownies. Like salmon fingerlings in a stream and women jogging alone, Betty's is hard evidence the 'hood has arrived. Coffee is pretty darned good too.

Betty's is such a darling little place. I stopped in on my way to Atlantic Terminal and picked up a couple cookies to munch on. The lemon shortbread cookie the [super sweet] ladies recommended was really tasty. Perfect amount of tart and sweet. Next time I'm in the neighborhood I plan on trying another of the goodies they have in their case.

One of the best bakeries I have been to. Service is super friendly and helpful and all of their goodies are to die for! Also, the wedding cakes they have on display are absolutely beautiful! It would be worth it to just go in and take a look while nibbling on a cookie (ONLY 40 CENTS!!)

I LOVE this place.
First off, the service is incredible. Everyone is unbelievable friendly and helpful. I would have given Betty five stars even before tasting the food, but oh my goodness, the food was even better than the service. I ate some sinful almond toffee cookies and a red velvet cupcake. YUM! -

This petit bakery serves up some 5 star service and quality hidden right on the skirts of downtown brooklyn.
As with any bakery the it is just an amazing thing to get a baked good while it is still slightly warm.
I give this place high marks because I tried a mixed berry muffin that was simply amazing.
They make really good cakes and pies but if you want something custom it might take a few days. Just remember that the really good ones are worth waiting for and I believe that their cakes are.
Their coconut cake doesn't have the trashed coconut that you are used to seeing on cheap Entenmanns cakes. Instead they are shaved the size of almonds and make for an amazing slice. -

Our wedding cake was delicious and beautiful!
We had a 3 tiered orange pound cake with orange buttercream filling. The bakery applied a custom stencil of our design to the cake and was able to match our color scheme using Pantone color codes. In addition, we had consistently friendly and accommodating service through the entire process. We were provided complementary samples of our top 4 cake preferences in order to choose our final cake fillings. I would definitely use Betty bakery for my next special event! -

I saw Betty from across the street and wondered in. It is a tiny bakery with lots of flavor. Everything there is upscale. I tasted a few cookies and they were awesome and purchased a small cake like cupcake with chocolate covering and white cream inside. It was amazing. The help there was lots of fun as I am a very difficult customer. (I generally foam from the mouth at such a selection of sweets) Although I live a long way away from this place I will definitely be back. I also love the way the store is decorated. What a place!

Red Velvet Cupcakes made with love and care. Betty's red velvet cupcakes are in my opinion, the best in the city. The cute bakery on Atlantic Avenue churns out the amazing pastries and their wedding cakes are beautiful. This is my go to place for parties - the cupcakes are always a hit whenever I bring them to functions. My only issue is that recently, the cupcakes seem to have increased in price (by a tad) and also decreased in size =( I won't stop going and perhaps my waistline will thank them for the change.

I've walked past this bakery plenty of times on the way to Atlantic Pacific Station after doing dog consultations nearby and only walked in once to get hot chocolate. But, wanting to buy my friend a treat, I decided to take my time and see what they had to offer. I assumed I'd get cupcakes but instead I went for their assorted cookies ($18/lb)! The woman behind the counter was nice and went through all their types before I chose what to get.
They all looked so tasty so I went for one of each except for their choc-chip cookie and oatmeal raisin because those are rather ordinary ones. A box of them (I didn't count how many but I got one of each) came to $5.
My friend decided we should share the cookies after dinner at Awash and we devoured them all within minutes! We unanimously voted the best of the lot was the gingersnap cookie half dipped in white chocolate with pistachios and the super thin ones with toffee and nuts! Next time, I'm just getting a box of just those. For me. Maybe one for you. Maybe. -

OMG. I don't know about the cakes and other assorted goodies but the cookies are DIVINE! A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. cookies! AMAZING cookies! The lace cookies were fantastic. The rugalach was delicious. And the lemon sugar cookies were out of this world! The staff is friendly and honestly, and I would come back again and again if I was in the neighborhood. Stay away from the overly decorated cookies and goodies (unless they're for display because they're pretty but not really so tasty) but the cookies are amazing. Expensive in comparison to the supermarket Chip Ahoys but completely non-regrettable.
Also, on a more recent trip, I discovered they make their own twinkies and ring-dings! Delicious yellow-cake with cream center? Absolutely yes! -

In the past, I never thought the stuff here was anything to write home about. However, I must say that the Chocolate Caramel tart and Rustic Galette with plums/prunes are both awesome. The only things I'll buy from there going forward, probably as I thoroughly enjoyed them.
The tart has a nice crispy, thin crust and I love the fact that the caramel-chocoate filling is salted. -

The hype isn't what it's mean to be, at least from my own experience. I've had better baked goods.
I can't really complain, but I wasn't as excited eating as I was looking. -

Forget the cookies go for the strawberry tarts this is a not to be shared item you'll understand after the first bite also try their take on ring dings.
If they have the lemon buttercream cake get a slice add a slice of the lemon poundcake. Yes I love this place I give myself a $12 limit when I go there otherwise I'd be the lady leaving with 2 bags of goodies -
Review from Elaine M.
Stopped in to pick up some sweet treats for mi familia. The store is very cutesy looking and the staff is friendly. The pig and cow marzipans are adorable (but I didn't buy one). Of course everything looked yummy. Finally decided on a slice of strawberry shortcake, ring ding, traditional apple cake and a red velvet cupcake.
My bro liked the ring ding. My sis enjoyed the strawbeery shortcake. To me, everything was just alright. The red velvet cupcake was nowhere as good as the one I had the day before. Apple cake was alright and I thought the cake for the Strawberry Shortcake was a bit dry.
The cakes and treats didn't do much for me but walking into the place did give me a 'happy feeling'. So at least I got that much out of it. -
Review from Chante R.
I need a do over for this place...I stopped by and was instantly taken by the selection of sweet treats. I opted for the oatmeal raisin cookie. It was "ok"...not bad but not making my mouth feel uber excited. While the place was great, the cookie was average and overpriced - $2.50 for a so-called large cookie?! I never like to give bad reviews unless its warranted which is why I will vow to come back armed to try more than just cookies :)

I am always on the lookout for my ideal bakery. Like Diogenes searching for an honest man, mine will likely be a lifelong quest.
Anyway, after a visit to Betty, I'm still searching. It's fine, don't get me wrong. In three visits, I've tried banana bread, cranberry walnut bread, lemon squares, a blueberry muffin, and a red velvet cupcake, plus various coffee drinks. All in the name of research, of course. They were all in the fine-to-good range.
Aesthetically, the place is pleasing enough, although it strikes a somewhat uneasy balance between Magnolia-style cutesiness and the more polished, urban style of Cheryl Kleinman's original wedding cake boutique in the Village.
I suppose if I had to sum up my objection, it would come down to this lack of focus: the place has baguettes, croissants and tarts, but also elaborate and polished cakes, and then homey stuff like scones and quick breads. I think the scope is such that the quality suffers somewhat and the effect is a bit discomfiting. (Yeah, it's pricey, too, but I take that as a given in the Apple!)
All that said, I think it's a good addition to a neighborhood which is surprisingly short on tasty sweets. Plus, the coffee's good and the staff is friendly and not afraid to express an honest preference. -

Ok Tart Tintin makes me think of Rin-tin-tin but alliteration aside....
Try their Apple Tart Tintin! In one word... "ToDieFor"
I saw some cool... but pricey holiday marzipan (a turkey) and a pumpkin that is the same size but 1/2 the price.
This is another wonderful Atlantic Avenue bakery. (But I still prefer Adam's cupcakes) -

I'll be honest, the place is a bit pricy to my surprise but I tell you the red velvet cupcake was one of the best I've ever tasted. It only lasted .25 seconds in my hands. and I was drowning in the sweet moist cake-ness of it all.
but why only 3 stars? well, the cupcake is slight (just a tiny bit) smaller than other cupcakes for 2.75. I'm sorry. I want a bargain. I mean like, cheap price for good food. They didnt seem to have that many cupcakes, however they did have a lot of small cookies.
Since their cookies seem to be such a hit here, I'll try em if I pass by again.Listed in: Diabetes

The cute decor lured me inside. The appearance of pretty desserts compelled me to buy something... anything... I settled on a tasty petit four.
The desserts seem a wee bit pricey, but you can see that a lot of creativity and effort goes into the decorating process.Listed in: CA goes wild on NYC

Ordered a small cake and cupcakes for a baby shower. All designs were supposed to be edible. However the cupcakes were not designed as discussed. Instead of a design similar to the cake they decided to place a toothpick and printed paper setting, similar to a flag in the middle. The designer claimed this concept cost more and became irate when I felt cheated and wanted a cash refund ($22) for the non-negotiated redesign (which I could have done myself) $200 for a small cake and cupcakes, I felt that $22 in cash or credit to my card and not a gift certificate should have been a small price however the cake designer continued to become argumentative and try to make me feel guilty about the stores equipment failure as if it was the customers fault. Will never recommend or go back there again. There are too many other bakeries that are just as good if not better.

I ordered a custom cake for a baby shower and absolutely loved the way it turned out.
I contacted several bakeries asking for ideas and pricing including: Baked, Sweet Melissa, Payard....and none of them seemed to offer anything special specific for a baby shower. baked told me to look at their website which I did not find helpful since that was the first thing I had done before contacting them...
Ellen from Betty Bakery sent over about 10 photos of cakes and I fell in love with about 8 of them. They have amazing designs and the red velvet tasted absolutely delicious as well.
I highly recommend them for custom cakes! -

Oh Betty Bakery....
It's hard for me to give the title of best Red Velvet cake out.
1 reason is that for the 1st time, possibly in my life, I'm a bit indecisive.
Another reason is it's been a bit since I tasted yours, and I'm not really a big cake fan I swear..But the last reason is If I crown you queen, I could start to suffer a cake problem and hang out with you too much
so I'm gonna withhold. Super moist, good amount of frosting.
Red Velvets cupcakes, slices, whole cakes- you choose.
They have a great selection of other stuff too. They are good at what they do.
Oh and Cutest shop ever. You kinda feel like if June Cleaver opened up a place it would be just like Betty's. It's neat like that.
If you are one of those girls who find themselves carrying around that wedding planning binder full time, you cannot skip Betty's. -

I don't know why this place is not more renown. Magnolia, Crumbs, and Billy's may get more press, but the rich, moist, red velvet cupcakes, with their blanket of cream cheese icing, are the best in the city. The Linzer tarts are also worth the trip.
-Red Velvet Cupcakes ***** The best I've ever had!

-Twinks ***1/2 I'm glad they made these upscale Twinkies. They're tasty, but I don't feel like I need to eat another one. -

Given the total lack of quality old school, Betty Crocker-style, American bakeries in the Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill area (Manhattan has many - Magnolia and Billy's Bakery to name a couple), Betty has a special place in my heart.
Every confection I've had from them - and I've had quite a few - is quality, fresh, and delicious. They keep it real, not too fancy, just good tasty cakes, pies, cookies and the like. I can recommend in particular the red velvet cake slices and cupcakes, all the pies (particularly the strawberry rhubarb), and the lemon-glazed shortbread cut out cookies. There are many other delicious looking items, but I love the ones I get so much that I can never get myself to deviate from what I went there to get! My only complaint is that they close pretty early and I can't get there in time on weekdays from my workplace in Manhattan. Sigh.
Keep up the great baking, Betty! And think about extending your hours for all us working schmoes with a sweet tooth! -

One word: RUGELACH
The best I've had, EVER!
Other than that, not impressed by anything else I've tried there, although I haven't tried MUCH.
And, MY GOD, are they EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!! Shamefully expensive.
But the rugelach is delectable!!!!!! -

My sister ordered a cake from here for my brother's bday. She got the red velvet cake but with chocolate buttercream. Since she custom ordered it with fondant, you cant refrigerate fondant, otherwise it will start melting, since we can put it in the fridge, you cant have the cake with the frosting it's supposed to come with (cream cheese). Either way, I'm not a big fan of cream cheese desserts so I was fine with it.
The cake was nice a moist and also I loved the ganache crumb-coat frosting...I wished it was thicker, only because I love chocolate..haha.
I also love the cookies from this place... -

I was innocently walking towards Sahadis when I passed a hoarde of pastel, sugar bunnies. Betty's whimsical window display and clean retro cool decor demanded I stop inside. So, I did. If only to get a closer look at the gorgeous, green & white enameled vintage stove which serves as their coffee fixin's counter.
A small soy latte and a gingersnap cookie set me back a whopping $3. The latte was perfect. The gingersnap was little, cute and crisp. It was tastey. I like that they serve sweets in reasonable sizes. I definitely don't need a cookie the size of a dinner plate, and so many bakeries only offer that. (And I don't like crumbs in my coat pockets, so don't tell me to save part for later!) Betty's selection of baked goods ran the gamut from lovely little petit fors, to pound cakes, to decadent layer cakes, to cookies of various sizes. There's definitely something there for everyone. -

There are some people working here, with a nasty attitude. Heavan forbid, if you have a question about the ingredients, of some of their products..
That being said... I found this place, when I was down the stret, buying amazing Ice Cream, at Blue Marble... They do not have a very large selection. But, the cookies I got, tasted gr8. They had a peanut butter and jelly cookie, that was my favorite. I think, I remember they had about 4 other choices, and all were very good. -

Meh, indeed. The cupcakes (vanilla/vanilla and vanilla/chocolate) were just so-so, and the brownies were nothing special, not even very chocolatey. Nice people working her, patient and helpful.
Their display cakes look beautiful, if fondant-heavy. -

It's been months since we got my brother's wedding cake, and I am still basking in the warm glow of Betty.
First, Ellen, the baker with whom we worked, was very willing to work with our budget. My sister in law is a grad student and my brother works at a museum. They were going to skip a wedding cake altogether since they were laying down so much of their limited income on renting the venue and paying for a reception dinner. But, with a little help, and the helpful suggestions of the baker, we found a perfect, unsurpassable cake.
I want to suggest that although in the past I wasn't an enormous fan of their counter staff, it's a totally different experience to work with the baker to buy a fancy event cake. We looked at pictures, tasted cakes, got lots of good suggestions (the coconut might be a better choice than the white cake, for instance), and overall felt very well cared-for. They opened the bakery early on the day of the wedding so we could pick up the cake before everyone got sucked into the momentum of the day, and they sent an extra box along for the top tier of the cake.
I'd been by Betty lots of times. We got my husband's birthday cake there a few months earlier, and my two daughters took (and take) great pleasure in peering through the window at the display cakes. Since my brother's wedding, I have regularly recommended them on Bococa Parents, the neighborhood list serve of which I am a member. There are a lot of good little bakeries in the area, and both Baked and Sweet Melissa are far closer to me than Betty, (and to be fair, I really like them, too), but I'm totally hooked, and this is my go-to place for special cakes.1 Previous Review: Show all »
