"Beautiful hotel right on the beach. Amazing pool and shell beach is just a great location (lived there for a year)."
8 reviews for Best Western Shore Cliff Lodge
We just got back from a 4 day stay at the Best Western Shore Cliff Lodge.
I was kinda scared after reading the other reviews, but we had already booked it and was to late to change it.
I am glad we didn't. The hotel was great. We got there 2 hours early and we were checked in with no problem. The view from our balcony was perfect. If you go do as we did and get a second floor OCEAN FRONT VIEW. The only bad thing I have to say about the hotel is that the restaurant was closed . (remodeling) but they still had the cont. breakfast from 7 am to 10 am. The birds would only come in if people were feeding them, and the smell was not that bad. We walked to the other near by hotels and the view was not as good as ours. We will be back next year.....
First, I would like to weigh in on the pelican debate. For those who say they didn't see (or smell) the birds, I wonder if the hotel does some kind of annual cleaning. I would recommend it more often, because when I went there a few weeks ago in August, its a stinky nightmare. I couldn't breathe outside, or chose not to, and when I tried to bear the smell to go in the pool, I was horrified to see all the doopie I was swimming in.
But the main reason I give it one star is due to their unwillingness to give us the room we actually reserved. We booked an ocean view room on http://hotels.com and when we got there, were given a partial-view room. When we went back to the front desk, they played the pass-the-buck, we-can't-do-anything-for-you game by saying they aren't responsible for how http://hotels.com describes the room (an excuse I hardly believe). They basically told us to suck it up and deal. As a tourist-based, chain hotel, I guess they figure it won't hurt their bottom line if they don't accommodate one guest.
I don't understand what is the problem here with other reviewers. The place is totally fantastic. The view from the balcony was out of this world. I don't care about everything else, which really wasn't bad at all.
I love this place and will be coming back again and again.
This was a weird stay to say the least. I had to go to the Central Coast for business trip. I had booked a view room and requested top floor and even paid for it. When I checked in, I got a bottom floor in front of the pool, not in front of the ocean. Went back to the front desk, the clerk was willing to make the change, but it will be on the other side of the property. I passed on it so he gave me a discount. I took it like because I was cold and lazy, plus I got an awesome parking spot.
When I got back to the room, I realized that I forgot my tooth brush, went back to the front desk. It was late so the lobby was closed. The guy came to the front, but his belt and shirt was undone? Strange, not sure what I interrupted. I got my crappy tooth brush and headed back. The dude was nice though.
The room has been remodel, it was not luxury but clean. They used sample Bed and Body Work shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. The lotion was coconut which made me smell like a stripper all day ;). The Internet connection worked so I was able to get some work done. I was woken up at 6 am by a platoon of battling sea gulls. This was annoying. Overall I did not have a bad stay, the neighbor upstairs reminded me of my crappy neighbors back home running all over the place in the morning, so ceilings are thin. Between the neighbor and the sea gulls, the sleep was not the most enjoyable. I saw better reviews with the other property, I might have to check it out. I would not rule this place out though.

Yes, there were a lot of pelicans and sea gulls, but not as much as I expected based on the reviews. Yes, there were a lot of dried droppings everywhere, but they looked more like stains than anything.
The views were great. If you've never stayed at an oceanfront resort - the gulls and the crashing waves may wake you. But we welcomed these noises because they were so peaceful and we felt one with nature. Corny, but you'll know when you get here : )
The pool was warm, the jacuzzi was nice. You can kinda' see the ocean in the pool, but not really. The views are better from your room.
The only thing we didn't like was the heating/ac unit -- it gets cold here at night and the heat didn't work. We had the front desk fix it and it took about 20 minutes to fix it -- apparently you have to try various combinations of the temp/fan settings to come up with a new 'heat' setting.
The room had a fridge, micro, coffee maker, blow dryer. The carpet and bedding are an older style - nothing modern/new. The bed was nice and big and there were lots of pillows (although 1 had a stain on it).
Breakfast is ok - muffins, danish, toast, cereal, juice, coffee, milk, fruit. Nothing fancy.
Ok, so I guess it's my fault for not realizing that they named their restaurant Pelican Point not just for novelty sake and luring in beach-going tourists, but because there are literally hundreds, maybe even thousands, of pelicans nesting on the shorecliffs below.
Perhaps I should've taken the clues more seriously when we walked to the registration desk and I noticed there were tons of feathers wafting around us, and when we walked to our room, how there was so much bird sh** all over the place, with a stench that reminded me of the days I cleaned kennels at Morry Bay Vet Clinic. As we stepped into our room I was immediately distracted by the gorgeous view of the waves crashing onto the cliffs below and gazebo in the distance. Then, at a closer look, I noticed (oh cool) one pelican, two pelicans, (EEEEK...ewwww...blech) they're everywhere!! This isn't a nature attraction. it's an infestation!
Based on the ocean view alone, I would've given it 3 stars max (it's a Best Western not The Four Seasons) if our balcony hadn't been left as a useless petri dish by adventurous seagulls touching down and bombing it full of dookie. BIG stinky dookie too.
So if you decide to overlook the bird infestation, and stay here anyways, thinking you can get over it by taking advantage of their lovely pool/jacuzzi, DON'T. Whatever you do don't go in the pool, because I'm sure if the dookie had covered every square inch of the hotel premises that the birds weren't discriminating enough to leave the pool untainted...think salmonella spa.

I booked what was supposed to be a romantic ocean view room for two nights at this property in Pismo. I was super excited because online, it looked spectacular, with an amazing pool.
When my boyfriend and I arrived we were greeted by HUNDREDS of (pissed off) pelicans and seagulls who were covering almost every surface. You know that movie, The Birds, by Hitchcock? Yeah..... like that. On EVERYTHING. Freaky.
Once we got into our room (which was lovely I have to admit) we went out to the balcony to see the view that we were paying for. What we found was a direct view of even MORE pelicans and seagulls who were busy covering the giant rocks on the cliffs with their droppings, perching on every rail, chair and table, including the whole pool area and every balcony, including ours. You can imagine what that many birds and what they drop smells like. Or if you cant, imagine 490583049568304956830968 rotten fish and thats what its like, inside.
The stench was so unbearable that we eventually went to the other property, the Best Western Shelter Cove Lodge, which is AMAZING and right up the road.
