Review from Kevin C.
A perfectly pleasant hotel right on the soulful waters of Carmel. The lobby is absolutely stunning, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a crackling fire welcoming you when you have the good fortune of checking in. The rooms are pretty standard and will not necessarily dazzle you, unless of course you splurge for an ocean view room. Be warned though, if you are a light sleeper, the ocean view rooms and the constant sound of the crashing waves may be a problem at night.
Staff are all friendly and helpful in getting oriented in the town. Truly a gem at this price point.Comment from Don D. of Best Western Plus Beach Resort Monterey 10/25/2011

I like this hotel for the ocean view rooms and the proximity to the beach.
A good breakfast facing the water and the scenery is very enjoyable. During winter time, i like to seat by the fire place in the lobby and from my room have a nice glass of wine with saucisson while watching the beautiful sunset.
The rooms are pretty standard and will need to good renovation.Comment from Don D. of Best Western Plus Beach Resort Monterey 10/26/2011

We came here for a wedding. I must say the scenery for the wedding was breathtaking. The weather was beautiful and the ocean waves were magnificent. This was a great place for a wedding. The food was average. The fruit was fresh and some of the buffet entries were good (tortellini, mashed potatoes, veggies). But some were cold (steak), or not flavorful (ma hi ma hi).
On to the room: our room was so stuffy with dead air. It was hard to sleep. We had to turn on the AC but that got crazy cold. And they put a huge comforter and a flannel blanket which mad us sweat. It was hard to control the environment. Then we discovered that the air vent was broken, letting in ocean humid air in. Also the queen size bed... was a full size.
if it weren't for the beautiful wedding, it was a tough night to sleep here.Comment from Don D. of Best Western Plus Beach Resort Monterey 10/25/2011

Hotel is in about the best location you can stay at. service was good , i wouldnt consider this a resort but its still a great place to stay while you enjoy monterey. The lobby was probably my favorite huge fireplace, beauticul ocean view, lots of seating, and seemed to never be crowded at all.... I'll probly be back ...

Just as advertised, this property is directly on the beach. The ocean front rooms have great head-on views of the waves, but there are no private balconies - only large windows. The waves are so loud that you hear endless rumbling all night. Some people like the sound of crashing waves, but this was too much for me. The room itself is a little small but fairly comfortable overall, though in need of some updating. There is free wifi and free tech support if you have trouble connecting to the wifi.

Awesome location destroyed by lazy service.
I've stayed at this hotel 5+ times over the last 2 years and the deteriorating service has fallen below a level where its issues are no longer compensated by the awesome views.
Expect to pay extra for parking.
Expect to wait for lazy staff to check you in at _their_ leisure.
Expect your room to be serviced at ~3PM.
Expect the Cafe Beach staff to talk amongst each other far more than you.
Expect the pool to be dirty.
Expect to wish for a bigger room.
Expect to wonder why they haven't renovated yet.Comment from Don D. of Best Western Plus Beach Resort Monterey 1/22/2012

After posting this review, we did finally hear back from the Assistant Manager, and today our credit was applied. Also, I would like to note; my Mother (being a bit old school) made the reservation via phone, through the telephone number posted on the brochure available at the property front desk. My mother was told that she could not have dialed thus number because, the reservation number was not theirs. But they did confirm we had a reservation. Weird! I decided to conduct a bit of investigation, I called the same phone number on three different occasions, and got three different locations, and, companies. One was Nobel House Properties, another being the hotel front desk and finally I got EAN: An Expedia Company. All by calling the same phone number. Again....weird!

This was my second time staying at this property and it was enjoyable. At a rate of $179 a night it thought the rooms would be nicer but you're really paying for the beach front location. You are also charge a $7.75 resort fee per night and when I asked what that gets me the receptionist told me is a additional energy fee. WTF?
You can tell the rooms are a little dated but they tried to modernize it somewhat. The walls are a little bare and the pint is not even but the rooms are clean. -

ALRIGHT. So maybe FIVE stars is pushing it. BUT if you've stayed in Monterey as many times as I have (pretty much the favorite place to go on family vacations as a kid - and continues to be as an adult), THIS place is IMMACULATE in comparison to some of the SHIT holes (lack of a better word here) charging the same price.
I would not call this place a resort. It's a Best Western. It's not a resort. There's no cabana boys. There's no spa. The bar is never really open. The spa is "heated" but still pretty darn cold.
BUT HELLO. It's right on the beach. Get your butt out of your room and enjoy the place you came to visit! There's even pretty cozy beach chairs close to the floor rooms so you don't have to get sand in your shoes if you really don't want to.
While staying here my fiance and I enjoy spending a lot of our time either on the beach or in the lobby. The lobby has a bunch of comfortable chairs facing the BEAUTIFUL view of Monterey - and you can sit next to their wonderful fireplace on cold Monterey nights!
The rooms are NOT that bad. There's a fridge which seems to be a hard thing to get in these parts. They are VERY cleanly in comparison to other hotels! They smell clean. There's a armoire thing to hang up your clothes. The walls may look like any other BUT their cement! MEANING: you cannot hear your (probably very) annoying neighbors!
The remodel they did to the bathrooms were a complete downgrade. I do not know why they thought a walk in shower in such a small bathroom was a GREAT idea because it was not.
My suggestion: do not stay ocean side if you're a light sleeper. The difference between ocean view and garden view is SO MUCH QUIETER! (and cheaper!)
The restaurant upstairs would not have five stars from me. They will receive an ENTIRELY different review from me. BUT the hotel itself - I love!
My fiance proposed to me on this beach :)
Will return here MANY more times. Will suggest this to many!Listed in: Monterey! Oh yea!

This review is for the cafe. Was visiting Monterey and decided to stop in at the cafe because of the view and service we received when we had our wedding here a few years ago. The latina woman handling the seating needs an attitude adjustment. She seated parties that arrived after us first and when she did seat us was rather annoyed that we even asked to wait for a window seat. Our first smile of the day came when she got our payment for the meal. She didn't ruin our day, but soured our memories of this wonderful hotel.

The ONLY thing this resort has going for it, is it's proximity to the beach. The rooms are horribly in need of a a good cleaning. The grounds and landscaping are poorly maintained, with sand blowing over and covering the stairs to the beach. The beach is still accessible, just you are walking on a ramp of sand, where the stairs should be.
The long and short of it is, this is a 1 star hotel that is charging 5 star rates, and they can get away with it because of their location.
To add insult to injury, there is a parking fee, if you have a vehicle.
NOT recommended.Comment from Don D. of Best Western Plus Beach Resort Monterey 8/8/2011

We decided to go on a last minute coastal road trip this past weekend since my daughter had no school on Friday. Most hotels had no vacancy so when I saw this beach resort that is on the beach & I was actually able to book a room for a really decent price of 150.00 a night.. I was praying that it would be nice.. :)
We were not able to get a ocean view room but we were just around the corner literally a hop, skip & jump away from the stairs leading to the ocean. My daughter loves the ocean more than any amusement park in the world so this made her extra happy.
The rooms had a beach theme decor, very clean & nice smelling with brand new flat screen TV. The bathroom was nice & clean... the shower was all glass & the water pressure adjustable ( I hate it when the shower heads at hotels have just one setting: a light trickle of water) I had read some other reviews on how small the bathrooms were & how the shutter door on the bathroom didn't leave much privacy & I have a totally opposite opinion.. Yes the bathroom door is a shutter door to match the beach theme decor but you have 100% privacy no one can see in & I can see the bathroom being 'small' if a person is maybe a plus plus size but still not extremely small.
The beach is really clean & while we took a evening walk on the beach my daughter found a bunch of seashells & sand dollars & she even saw a huge whale wash up that had been partially eaten by killer whales & sharks. I think she is going to be a Marine Biologist when she grows up now :)
The only down side for me was I wanted to book another night here because we had so much fun but nothing was available :( -

Love it here. Get a drink at the bar and enjoy the amazing view. The entire back wall faces the ocean and is transparent. The waves are very close. So cool. Our usual type of room is on the beach side and level. We are always very happy with our stays. Treat yourself! Nothing like falling asleep/waking up to the sound of the ocean.

This property is older BUT well kept. It is the ONLY hotelin Monterey that is on the beach. We have stayed at a lot of hotels on Cannery Row (5 star hotels) and I can honestly say if the beach is why you go to Monterey, this is the ONLY hotel to stay at! We have had both ocean and garden view rooms and I loved BOTH! They are also pet friendly for a fee. It was $25 per night when we brought our dog in 2008. We had the pleasure of being helped at the front desk by Niole W. I am sure all front desk people are good, but Nicole went out of her way to assist us. The housekeeper was a delight, as was the wait server at their on site restaurant, which has views that are stunning! WE love watching the waves at night while dining. One draw back is Cannery Row is not walking distance, but only 8 minutes by car from the hotel. Enjoy!

There are so many 4 and 5 stars, I wanted to be a believer. Having stayed in a BW in Redding, I came in with high expectations.
Those expectations were NOT met.
When I booked the room, I asked if there were any honeymoon discounts. I was told no, but given an "upgraded" room with a "partial" view. I don't remember what the "upgrade" entailed, but the "partial view" meant 2nd floor with a partial view of the garden and ocean instead of the parking lot or whatever.
The room itself was smaller in comparison to the Redding location, with a standalone armoire. There were 2 busted hinges on the armoire, so it really became useless because it was a pain in the ass to try to open. The TV remote's batteries had to be nearly dead, since we had to be within about 2 feet DIRECTLY in front of the TV in order for it to work. The shower drain was slow, resulting in about an inch of standing water by the time we finished with our showers. The shower head was a 4-function, but only 3 worked. The sink drain plug wouldn't raise.
We checked in on Monday 05/30. When we got to the room and found the drain plug not working, I called the front desk and it was fixed within about 20 minutes. When we came back from visiting the wharf that evening, I reported the broken armoire hinges. A guy (Mario) came to the room to verify it, then said he didn't have the tools to fix it and told us to call the desk the next morning. Please tell me why the customer should have to call again?
When I reported the other issues (batteries, shower drain, shower head, and armoire) the next morning (Tuesday 05/31) about 8a, they still weren't fixed by the time we checked out the next day at 11a (Wednesday 06/01).
When I brought this to the attention of the man working the front counter during checkout, the look on his face said "oh shit, what's he gong to demand?!" I didn't demand or ask for anything... and neither did he offer anything more than a generic apology.
This place came recommended by a couple friends who have honeymooned here, and have gone here for their anniversary. I'm sorry to say that for the price I doubt I will be coming back to smaller rooms and non-working small-ticket issues that couldn't be fixed within 24 hours. The shower issue alone was a safety hazard, despite the rubber mat...
The only reason there is a 2nd star is because of the free upgrade and the validated parking. -

The fourth star applies if you stay on the ocean side.
Stayed for two nights recently with wife and kids (6 and 11). We got two rooms next to each other, ocean view. Don't stay here unless you're on the ocean side. Total was about $850 with a AAA discount. Like most places the rates go way up on Friday.
The view from the rooms was awesome (go look at the photos I uploaded). We were on the third floor, that's the top, and it looks like you're on an ocean liner. The sound of the ocean put us to sleep each night and the sunsets were magnificent.
Rooms are OK but a little small. We frankly could have stayed in one room if they were just a tad bigger. I asked when we checked out and they are all the same size.
My little girl loves the ocean so being able to just walk down and play on the beach was huge. She loved it.
We ate the first night at the hotel and the food was quite good. We were tired after the long drive from the SF area so it was convenient. The view is great but the service and feel were down scale. Too bad. The kids don't mind of course. A tablecloth would be a nice touch and help with the noise level.
Would we return? Definitely. Ocean side of course. -

A great weekend hotel. Right on the water and perfect to stay with our dog! It even has a patch of grass where dogs can do their business before hitting the beach.
We reserved our room over the phone. We checked the lowest rate online and they honored it. They were very nice!
When I entered the lobby, I felt I was in Hawaii or in one of those fancy hotels in Santa Monica. The wide windows facing the ocean, the piano player, everyone drink in hand... So cool.
The rooms were your traditional Best Western although the flat screen is indeed too big for the room, but nice. The automatic double shades are a great touch so you can see the nice garden or the ocean if you are splurging, without peeping toms checking your room. I had no issues with the bathroom door, but the drain in the tub was too slow.
The restaurant in the fourth floor had an even better view and although we only had aps and a salad, everything was very tasty.
We'll definitely come back whenever we want to get away and spend a weekend with a tired, happy dog! -

We love staying here for quick family getaways with our two young kids (ages 3 and 6). The staff is friendly and helpful; housekeeping is great - especially considering that the beach is just outside. Our kids love walking right out onto the beach and are never quite ready to leave! There is a lovely pool, nice room service, certain rooms are pet-friendly. Mom and Dad can lounge right outside the room, have a glass of wine and watch the sunset.
We look forward to going back!Comment from Don D. of Best Western Plus Beach Resort Monterey 7/26/2011

Look, this is really just a bit over a two star motel except with $200 a night rates. With one star food - in fact, just don't eat the food. I tried it twice and I am still recovering a week later. That said, though the rooms are relatively pathetic, they are clean and not falling apart.
The good part: The view is incredible - literally right on the beach. We actually saw a pod of dolphins playing in the water about 40 feet off the shore. And for a conference it is fantastic because the entire wall of the conference room is lined with floor to ceiling windows through which you can see the most amazing view of the water and the sunset. Truly beautiful. Bonus is while not downtown, it is only a 4 minute drive or so into downtown Monterrey and a straight shot on the roads so you won't get lost. -

This Best Western Plus is located right on the beach with beautiful views of the Monterey Bay. Our room was on the third floor with an ocean view. The room was decently sized- not too big, not too small, just right. The room was clean and remodeled. The flat screen tv was a nice addition to the room. The bathroom was nicely remodeled. They had Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. We had one sink and a spacious vanity area that included a mini fridge underneath.
One elevator was broken the three days we were here. The elevators are painfully slow (so we used the stairs). What really bothered me was the musty smell of our room, it smelled like the room had been vacant for a while. We did air our room out and the smell lessened but not to the point where I would be happy. They offer free internet but its uber weak and when there is a conference going on at the hotel getting a connection is hard because they lack the bandwidth. What I really liked best was the window treatments- our large window had a daytime privacy shade that allows light into your room without people being able to see into your room. The night time shade completely darkens the room which I love because I find it hard to sleep with any light in the room.
The beauty of this hotel is that its on prime beach front property with easy beach access. I had to knock two stars off for the broken & slow elevators plus the musty smell in our room. My hubby was attending a conference at this hotel hence our stay. This hotel seems pricey for the average stay in relation to the 'updates' that have been made.
If we were staying in the area for non-business travel I would rather stay at the Monterey Plaza Hotel or InterContinental Hotel Monterey but if beach access is important for you & your family the Best Western Plus might be a good option for you.

Stale/ Musty smells in room leave me with a "Skip It" note from me to you!

This place has way better reviews than it deserves....for the price that I paid at least.
I did a good deal of research trying to find a nice hotel to stay at for a long weekend. This place looked nice in pictures and had tons of reviewing where people were raving about it being beach front. Well, when we got here it was pretty disappointing. There were no beachfront rooms left so they gave us a room on the first floor facing the pool. Walking into the room was quite shocking...it looked nothing like the pictures and straight up reminded me of a Motel. Small room, bathroom and sink exposed and opening up into the room. Did I really just pay $140/night to stay in a cramped up motel? Yah, so the beach is just steps away, but it's the same as any other hotel around the area if you don't get a beach view but have to pay the price for it.
Another downside - the hot tub is small and was fully occupied all weekend. They also close down the pool before 10pm - way too early in my opinion, everyone's on vacation!
Location of the "hotel" was also less than ideal. It's in Monterey but still a good 15-20 mins away from the Pier.
Not that it was a bad experience - was definitely way over-priced and over-hyped. -

Local is great. Staff indifferent
Upside: Right on the beach. Had a 4th floor beach view. Could see and hear the waves. Downside: bed was hard, Internet didn't work (staff apologized, but didn't fix), blaring rap music coming from hotel CD player on beach during "campfire & movie" so loud couldn't hear movie. Was disappointed in staffs indifference when others and I complained. -
Review from Carol F.
Redwood City, CA
Our family stayed here for two nights in August, and paid over $550 for a room with two queen beds. I don't know what we were thinking, but it was definitely a disappointment and not worth the price they are charging.
The building is literally crumbling on the outside. The landscaping is dying and the sidewalks and exterior are dirty and moldy and haven't been power washed in years. The place looks like it was built and decorated in the 70's and nothing has been done to it since.
The room was one of the worst we have ever stayed in. The bathroom only had a shuttered door, so there is zero privacy and you can hear every sound in the room very clearly. The sink is in the open with no door. The carpet was dirty, one outlet didn't work, the paint was peeling, it had a soft bouncy mattress and the entire room could have used a good cleaning. Our door looked like someone had tried to break in and it was patched and painted over, with wood chunks missing.
The elevator is on one end of the building, and it's a long walk to your room if it's on the other end. We had a ground floor room and were a little scared staying there. They have chairs placed in clusters right outside, and we had a group of young adults "partying" until after 11:00 both nights--not family friendly to say the least. You really can't enjoy the ocean view (which we paid extra for) with a group right outside your window. We basically sat in our room with the doors locked and drapes closed whenever we were in our room.
The pool area is dreary to say the least, with a view of the parking lot and again, could have used a power washing.
The location on the beach is the only thing that this property has going for it. The restaurant was not too bad either, and definitely has nice views, as does the lobby. It's not the best place to stay in Monterey, since it's a 15 drive to anywhere you want to go. Best Western would be better off tearing this place down and building a first class resort on this site. -

We chose Beach resort Monterey as our venue for our wedding just a little over a week ago and were very pleased. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone was happy and their location with the beach view is absolutely magnificent. Our guests raved at what a beautiful and fun wedding we had. The staff was so kind and generous. We worked with Lura in the beginning of the planning and Cristina towards the end and also at the rehearsal and the big day. Both were professional and super nice. I would definitely recommend Beach resort Monterey. =)

The location cannot be beat, on the beach, near walking trails, great Bay views. But, after staying there several times in the past and being satisfied, this visit was bad due to the room location - directly underneath the lobby and entrance to the hotel. The constant noise of cars, SUV's, heels, rolling carts and luggage kept me awake every night..... So, even with the great location unless we can book a quiet room we will not be returning here. We booked through an online site and that doesn't seem to work these days with hotels so I will definitely book directly next time and request another room. Or, I may just pass on hotels completely and find a nice cottage in Pacific Grove which is my favorite town on the Coast. And there are additional daily fees for parking and for pets, I think it is too expensive.

3 1/2 stars.
Where else can you stay on an oceanfront property with beach and pay under $130/night? Would you think a Best Western?
Ok so here goes. From the exterior perspective, the place is wonderful. Looks modern and architecturally pleasing. For a Best Western, wow. Walk out to the beach and stare at this marvel. It looks cool!
However go inside the room and it reminds me of a Best Western. Oh! It is! I forgot.
Hey, nothing really special here in the room. You get Internet connection and an LCD tv. And a bed. If you are lucky enough to get an ocean room, know that there is no private terrace - it is a walkway connecting all the rooms This kind of sucks because all you have is a large window overlooking the ocean but have to leave the curtain open - and give up privacy.
So imagine yourself sitting on your bed, staring out the window, listening to the waves crash while the sun sets. Ignore the handrails that are blocking this view. Ignore the family of five with little kids screaming up and down the walk way blocking your view and staring at you. Get the picture? Dumb design.
Hmmmm... the walls in this place seem thin. I mean, I can hear people talking in the room next to me. Something about jellyfish, sex, donuts, and the aquarium. Helloooooo!
Big turnoff - they charge a parking fee and an energy use fee. So if you leave the heater or a/c on, surprise! Oh yeah and if you are not into hearing the surf pound into the retainer wall all night, you won't like being on the ocean side. Its pretty loud and takes some getting used to.
The beach. Yes there is one. And its kind of nice because there is no beach on Monterrey Bay other than this one. Good for a stroll to relive stress and take in the view.
Overall, its a nice place to stay compared to other locations in Monterrey Bay for the price (which can be steep). Realize the premium you pay for is in the location and view. -

Good location, clean rooms, but not much else, and overpriced for whatcha get. It's a flimsy built building on a budget with the WORLD'S SLOWEST ELEVATOR, and they only have one of 2 in operation. Don't expect much from the "Continental Breakfast" either, and being herded into a too small room with 20+ other strangers simultaneously to consume it. Sheesh! Makes me wonder....Just what Continent is that breakfast from? Glad we had the AAA Discount here. Now onto the Aquarium!

sorry, I made a mistake, my review was supposed to be on a different Best western Plus. Although, I still give it four stars even though I've never been here because the owner actually contacted me that I might have been wrong on the location. I thought that showed great integrity on the owner's part, and I definitle will stay here, the next time I am near Monterey. Integrity and honesty are quite disappearing to a lot of business people and that was quite a breath of fresh air. Thank you!

I stayed here in April with my husband and we had a great experience. We were lucky to get a first-floor ocean side room, and it was beautiful. There is a wonderful deck to relax on. The staff was very accomodating and friendly, and the room was very nice. Not super - dooper luxury or anything, but it felt clean, modern, and well-cared for. We had dinner in the restaurant upstairs and it was very good (a little pricey, but the fare was worth it). I would definitely stay here again next time I am in Monterrey.

May 2011-a nice stay at the BW Beach Resort. The property is beach side only steps from the sand/water and between two public beaches and the walking/bike trail. Parking is controlled by gate access and located within the property. The lobby is nice with a panoramic view of the crashing Monterey Bay. Bar too. No real character, just a bar counter with stools sharing an area with the lobby. Cozy fireplace though. Pool and hot tub looked clean and welcoming. Wood decks and chaise lounges adorned the premises. My room was on the second floor overlooking the pool area. It was nice. Single queen bed with shower/tub, frig and flat screen TV. Cozy. The room appeared fresh and was clean. Overall, the place was comfortable and a good value. Mind you it's not Cannery Row but nonetheless a decent location close to the freeway for easy access to the surrounding communities.

Went here for a weekend with the girls and it was suitable for our needs. The location was FANTASTIC as it is right on the beach. No matter what room you have it is just a few steps and you are there with your toes in the sand staring at the waves. Plus its just a few minutes drive to the pier and shopping on Cannery Row. The room was adequate, a little small but it worked. I still cant believe we fit 5 girls in that one small room! The staff was really great at accommodating us with a roll away bed and extra towels. We didn't eat at the Hotel as we opted for sight seeing so I cant comment on the quality of their food.

We bought tickets to the Monterey Jazz Festival and then started to look at hotel rates...YIKES! Turns out the same weekend there was a race at Laguna Seca so hotel rooms were at a premium. My husband made reservations at three different motels (the big names like Embassy Suites were just too expensive) several months ago, then we sat down to compare notes on Yelp.
The other two non-branded motels definitely looked like the worst of the bunch. At least the Best Western Plus Beach Resort had some positive reviews mixed in with the negatives. For the money (about $165 on Friday and Saturday nights, about $135 for Sunday night) we decided to stay a bit further from the fairgrounds where the festival is located and take a chance with the Best Western (it is actually located in Seaside, which borders Monterey to the north if I have my directions straight). The brand name gave us some confidence...but only some. I've got to admit I was considering the possibility of checking out on Sunday morning and driving part way back to L.A. after the festival on Sunday night if the rooms were as nasty as some Yelpers described.
Folks, this is a Best Western. I've stayed in many of them in our travels over the years, and most are, at best, a 3 star motel. Usually dated and slightly run down, but sometimes the budget drives the decision of where to stay. You can't expect amenities, decor, service, and room quality of even a Marriott Courtyard.
That said, we were surprisingly impressed with the room. A king bed on the first floor that opened up to a wooden deck and a view of the ocean. Parking was close to our room which made for easy unloading of our car (although they charge $10/night for parking...at a Best Western???). The room decor was new-ish with a beachy vibe. The windows opened up to the ocean and we appreciated the remote controlled screen which allowed for a view of the ocean but privacy from those walking by. The black out screen was also remote controlled on a bedside switch. Not an enormous closet (it is actually an armoire) and a dresser which seemed adequately sized. Nice flat screen tv, plenty of hot water in the nicely tiled shower (loved the Grohe adjustable/handheld shower head) with one of those curved towel bars so you have extra room to maneuver. Basic shampoo/conditioner/bath gel provided. Big counter in the sink area with a fridge below that we didn't use.
We checked in and parked ourselves on the deck to enjoy the late afternoon views. Kept the door open to our room and next thing I knew a goose was walking in our room! Didn't take much to get him back outside.
Most importantly, the bed was super comfortable and the sheets were soft. We slept great all three nights. The sounds of the ocean weren't disruptive as other Yelpers have mentioned. The only disruption was some loud talkers walking by our room one night...they were gone in a minute.
We didn't use the restaurant or bar as we prefer finding good local spots and went out to breakfast in town. There's a Starbucks a short walk away so you could easily grab a coffee and pastry then sit on the deck and enjoy the morning. Never even went looking for the pool or spa so I can't comment on these areas.
It was an easy flat walk (1.5 miles) to the fairgrounds for the festival and we walked both ways on Friday night. There is a bike path nearby which I believe goes all he way into Monterey and the Cannery Row area. If we had brought our bikes, we could have easily biked to the festival and back.
On Monday morning we took a leisurely stroll down the beach. Beautiful, tranquil...the perfect way to start the day. We both agreed that we would stay there again if ever in Monterey. Being away from the touristy Cannery Row area was actually kind of refreshing and a short drive away when we wanted to go there.
And yes, the energy surcharge of $7.75 is bogus. Why hotels don't just include all those charges in the room rate? The explanation to us was that it was a fee imposed by the local utility company. -

We're staying here now and am very happy with the accommodations. The ocean is literally on your front door with no roads or anything else between you and it. Open your door and see waves! Room is nice enough, standard hotel room. Could use a few upgrades but for the location it's just fine. House restaurant is a bit pricey but a good place for breakfast. You're just off highway One, so very convenient. Just be sure to ask for an ocean-front room on an upper storey. The ground level ones put you in the front row of any wedding happening in the courtyard.

I had no idea what to expect from this place, but all I can say is, I can't wait to go back for a relaxing weekend trip. I was there for a business meeting and only stayed one night. The room was really nice - GREAT ocean view. There is nothing like falling asleep to the sound of the ocean.
The lobby takes full advantage of the ocean as it's backdrop. The entire back wall is all picture windows with views of the water beyond. Amazing.
Small bar on the ground floor. Enjoyed a lemon drop (not strong enough) and a "walk on the beach" cocktail.
Dinner was in a ballroom on the fourth floor. OMG - I didn't think much of what I had pre-ordered for our meal, but let me tell you - the breaded chicken with fresh crab meat on top, hollandaise sauce and rice pilaf... If I wasn't in public, I would have licked my plate. All that was left was the little orchid garnish. Dessert was a huge piece of Tiramisu that I couldn't finish. I tried, but just couldn't do it.
Other entrees for our dinner party included halibut and prime rib. Reviews around the table was a consistent YUM.
The next day was meeting day. Started off with a full breakfast (served in our conference room) of eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, all kinds of fresh fruit and juices, and of course coffee.
About an hour later, fresh and hot cinnamon rolls. I was still digesting breakfast, but hell, who can turn down fresh rolls???
Lunch consisted of a variety of salads (green, tuna, potato) and a make your own sandwich bar. And then the desserts... a full carrot cake, and a huge platter of cheesecake and butter pound cake. Oh hell.
AND LASTLY... about another hour later, fresh baked pretzels with a variety of dipping sauces. That I couldn't even touch because I was about to burst.
If this food is any indication of how the food is in the onsite restaurant, then I really can't recommend this place enough. Nice rooms, right on the beach, unbeatable views, and a delicious meal - all in one location. -

Have you ever had a vacation where you were lucky enough to sleep by the ocean, in the city by a bay, in the country in Napa, in an adobe bungalow in the desert and then in a cool penthouse in the Hollywood Hills?
This leg of our vacation found me next to the ocean lulled to sleep at a hotel that I never would have guessed could be so cool and accommodating but a Best Western by the sea in Monterrey.
First of all, let me preface the rest of this review by saying if you haven't been to Monterrey you are missing something!!! It's extremely beautiful in Northern California and completely different than Los Angeles. Even the climate is totally different which is a nice change. The weather is balmy.
The hotel is located directly on the beach. Need I say anything else? We booked online through Travelocity and got a good deal on the rooms. Our room was located on the corner which was super private and had a direct view of the ocean, power operated shades for privacy and glare, a big, skwishy comforter and flat screen T.V.
In the morning there was a free continental breakfast waiting for us downstairs since they were doing some remodeling on the hotel.

Couldn't of asked for a better room directly on the beach. Showers were great,, literally after the protective wall from the surf, it was less then 100 feet to the ocean itself. Love the shades. Big rooms... May never want to spend another night anywhere else.

I think 2.5 stars is a solid average rating for this place GIVEN that you, like us, get a 1/2 off deal on your room.
I think if places charge over a hundred dollars for a damn room that they need to provide a microwave and a mini-fridge. They do have a mini-fridge but no microwave. That pisses me off, especially considering there is a fucking safe that looks like a microwave, which I DO NOT need. Also, there is no microwave in the lobby. No, no, no, no, no like.
Also, why the hell would you stay in this hotel without the beach front view? Please, can I get the parking lot view instead of the ocean view? My sweetheart and I would rather watch all these drunk Friday-night assholes and just eff the ocean we drove here to see. Seriously, without the view, this place reeks of Motel 6, and of rich teens losing their virginity.
Also, my husband kept running into the bed. And this place reeks. The complimentary breakfast is ok. I'd rather get 5 dollars off the room and go to McDonalds. Puh-lease. And hey maids! LEAVE US THE FUCK ALONE!! Ten dollars off for each door knock would have won us a free night on the wrong side of the fucking hotel, facing the parking lot, and not the beach. Did I mention that we could not see the beach from our room at this "beach resort?"
Also, just to warn you, when you wake up here, you will think it is 1968. That is due to the severely outdated decor, aside from the track lighting update they must have installed circa 1998 when HGTV taught every idiot how to do so. Thanks for the fucking migraine, BW.
If the rate wasn't so reasonable (just over a hundred) and we had paid the usual 189.99-489.99 the "Best Western" usually charges for the room we stayed in (as posted on the back of the front door,) me and mine might have started a Best Western by-the-sea riot. No joke. Do not pay full price unless you want to be pissed off. Overall, we were dissatisfied. -

I've stayed at the Best Western Monterey Beach Hotel four years in a row for our annual business conference - so I feel it's high time I reviewed the place! But first, here are some speed tips if you are considering staying here:
1) Ocean side rooms - rent one, its worth the added expense
2) Higher floor rooms - less noise, better view
3) Rooms on the North side of the place - less pool noise
4) Skip the restaurant - it's just ok
5) Spend an evening with friends in the lounge when Mr. Martinez plays the piano - this kid's excellent (and very cute)
6) Come in the summer, or be prepared for a chilly beach experience!
Of course my experience with this hotel has been based on being part of a large conference - and while there were other guests here during this time, mostly I was busy working. Still I was always quite impressed with the efficient and friendly staff. An example: I was walking down the staircase as a staff member was walking up. She hadn't seen me and was clearly lost in thought. But as soon as she saw me, her face brightened up and she greeted me with a big smile and hello. At each visit, my room was cleaned and prepared so quickly! During a break in the morning sessions I would head back to the room to find it spic and span! I am also impressed with the hotel's environmental stand, such as allowing it's guests to have the option of keeping towels for a few days instead of wasting water by cleaning them each time.
Being on the beach is so amazing. One year I saw dolphins playing off shore. But, one of the downfalls is that it can be quite chilly if you are here off season. Our conference is during March and, although there have been occasional warm days, it is quite cool and windy.
Another Con would be how isolated the hotel is - it isn't really near anything you'd like to visit as a tourist - but it is just "minutes" away by car.
But, still. how can you beat that view and the sunsets? The lounge is cozy and the bar quite good. My White Russian was yummy!
Overall, I have been very pleased with my stay here.
