Review from Dave L.
This place is old but it's nice and it's right on the wharf in Lahaina. The location is perfect for us with lots of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. Every type of ocean adventure can be booked at little booths along the wharf.
The standard rooms are small but room enough for two people and they have and table with a couple of chairs, coffee maker and small fridge. We always get a room with a balcony that has an ocean view and overlooks the Banyan Tree park. The balcony also has a small table with two chairs and sitting outside is really nice.
This hotel has a restaurant downstairs at the street level. All the rooms are up a set of stairs on the second floor. I've never noted an elevator here, so if you have a problem with stairs this might not be the place for you.
There's a bus stop nearby so my wife and I usually always take the short ride to Kaanapali Beach almost everyday and it's only a buck each - cash.
I love the little town of Lahaina. We think it's the perfect place for a little vacation and try and come here twice a year.
If you're the type of people that need a flat screen TV and new furniture then this place is not for you. -

Stayed here one night. The room was small and it had a funky smell. The lanais were not very private, with plastic chairs. And even though this is a non-smoking establishment, our neighbor smoked on his lanai (however, the management seemed to address this pretty fast when notified).
The location is good though, overlooking the Banyan tree, just in the middle of Lahaina. -

Creaky floors and drafty rooms, just the way I like my heritage hotels. Apparently this hotel goes back to the Mark Twain and whaling boat days, so this place has both history and a centralized location. The front office was very helpful in guiding me through town, via cell phone to get me past the big Banyan tree and into their front lobby. They were most helpful.
The red roof and hotel facade does look like a place out of 19th century America that managed to cross over into Hawaii. I didn't know whether to think this was the Ponderosa or some south sea whaling station...but I think it is both.
I have good memories of staying here. The room was a bit cramped, but had excellent views of the port and court Banyan via doors that swung open to my own little terrace. Compared to most hotels in Lahaina, this place was relatively inexpensive. I would say the bang for your buck quality level makes this place a good place to crash. -

My sweetie and I really enjoyed our breakfasts here. Our favorites were the loco moco and the macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup. I also had the mahi mahi eggs benedict which were good. The only thing I'd ding them a star for is the service... it's a bit slow, and one of the waitresses in particular was a little curt with us.
You can park in the streets nearby or in the free lot near Annie's Shaved Ice.Listed in: Aloha Yelp!

Went for breakfast. Worst Ever Hands Down. The food was either frozen or from a can. The service was poor, our waitress didn't even bother to look at us, much less check back to see if we liked our food.
I have to say though, the bartender did make an effort to give us good guest service. He should be in charge of training the rest of the servers there.
I hate wasting my money on bad food and bad service! -

The Pioneer Inn has such great memories to me. My good friend, Kip and I decided to take a trip to Maui and backpack around the island for as long as we wanted it to go. Not knowing anything, we took a flight, rented a car with insurance (that we later turned into junk) and headed for Lahaina. Seeing the Banyan Tree in the middle of town, we headed for the local tavern (I drank then, not now) and asked about the best hotel in town. We were pointed to the Pioneer Inn.
It looked like an old cowboy hotel like you see in Gunsmoke or Bonanza. A man's hotel, girls not welcome. But one of the reasons we were going to Maui was to meet girls. I was disappointed by that turn of events but the Inn was cheap and we were saving money by staying there so we checked in.
And it was fun. The breakfasts were great, especially the macadamia nut pancakes. Wonderful and with enough syrup to put you right back to sleep in a sugar coma.
No AC and it can get a bit loud with all of the drinkers going from bar to bar and tripping on the old, crooked wooden floors.
So I will add my 2 cents in for the Pioneer Inn. It was great, fun and quite a memorable experience. Right next to the harbour too, in the center of all the action.Listed in: My Maui Memories

I am writing for both the hotel and the little breakfast place downstairs.
First, the hotel. It is the oldest hotel in Maui, built from 1901. It has that cowboy, salon place feel to it with cracked aged wood. It does not have it's own parking lot (more on this later), it rents from a lot company two blocks away. Inside the rooms, you will find a fan, a bed, a small patio on the outside, but not much on the inside. It is very charming but it DOES NOT have an elevator. No AC either. Be warned and pack light! You are pretty much in the middle of the action in Lahaina if you stay here so it can get a bit loud at night. I can't really recommend staying here if you are a light sleeper like me.
Next, the breakfast place next door. Like Kari and Leon said, the pancakes here are good, really good. Probably in my top 3 favorites. Lucky for you, I took a picture, see here: http://www.yelp.com/bi... Tip: If you stay at the hotel, they will give you a discount coupon to use at this place.
Ok, here's my little rant on this place. I had a morning flight and the airport is an hour away. I over slept and I had to run to the lot to get the car, then drag a couple of 50+ lbs. suitcases down the stairs. No easy feat when you're on vacation. There's no electronic checkout like the bigger hotels either so you lose a bit of time there. I believe you also have to tell them in advance if you are leaving early or late. Overall, I do like the charm of the hotel but I didn't like not having some modern amenities. Well, as for my flight, I made it to the gate with 10 minute to spare before they closed the hatch. -

My father and I had an awesome vacation here in January, 2009. I had no idea what to expect. I recommend a room on Front Street (second floor). I was here for the first ever Maui Oceanfront Marathon, and it was spectacular.
Parking is annoying because it's like a block away and you have to put a new parking permit on your dash everyday (I got a ticket because I forgot). Otherwise, it's a great place to be!
Front street rooms have balconies that look out onto Front Street and there is live music just across the street and great people watching. The live music is just the right volume when you're on the balcony.
There is a restaurant attached to the place; they discount the bills of hotel guests (like 10 or 15%). Of course, the place still isn't cheap.
The restaurant's fish (mahi mahi) and chips are pretty good, the spinach salad is surprisingly good, the macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup are very good (especially after an endurance race!), and the local beers are good as well.
Opposite of Front Street is, essentially, the ocean. This is also where you go for all of the local tourist stuff involving water (whale watching, fishing, diving, etc.)
It really is just about the perfect location.
Also, it's across the street from the famous Banyan tree, which is something you should see if you're anywhere near Lahaina. -

I love this place it is old Hawaii. In 1974 I stayed here with my wife we were just married. Left for the day and returned later. My wife said come to the bathroom and look someone took our toilet. Yep it was gone. Called the front desk they said it was leaking. The repair man took it to town to get parts. They gave us a key to another room until the toilet came back. My dad always stayed here with his fishing buddies. We liked the food and service.
Walk right out the front door to the docks and the town square. Went back several years ago but they were to booked up for us to stay. -

Had a really good breakfast here. Finally, a place that doesn't try to gouge you before you get in the door. The menu is simple, but in a tourist-trap town like Lahaina, that's a relief. Good food. Fair prices. Casual service. Hey, it's a Best Western after all.

Great place for breakfast. By far, the most common breakfast dish is the macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup. I prefer the mahi mahi and eggs (I know this probably seems weird to you...but it's good).
The atmosphere is perfect for the island. It's like sittin on a porch with open windows. YOu should go at least once while you are on the island. -

We had breakfast at the restaurant. Why drive all the way to the gazebo when the macadamia nut pancakes at the Pioneer are just as good? They had a generous amount of nuts sprinkled inside and on the pancakes. They came with syrup and a not too sweet coconut sauce. The maui maui eggs benedict was a plesant surprise. A reorder for sure. Light flakey fresh fish on a english muffin with a perfectly cooked egg and a very tasty benedict sauce. Sauce not too strong or sour and the egg actually tasted like an egg Nicely prepared. The sweetbread French toast is also a top choice and you won't be disappointed. The hotel is a delight. We didn't see the rooms but the restaurant, lobby and courtyard are very well maintained and fresh. Very quaint and located in the harbor. Service is friendly and attentive. The Italian host is very personable.

Good place for breakfast. The Macadamia Nut Pancakes were excellent with the coconut syrup. My friends enjoyed the omelets, notably the Mawee Wawee. Also had lunch here, which was just OK. Expect slow service.

I have been to Maui 7 or 8 times and this is the ONLY hotel I have EVER stayed in. That said, the last time I visited was in 1984 or '85. However, my absolute BEST vacation memories revolve around the Pioneer Inn. The coffee shop downstairs used to turn into the best bar at night with live music and tourists, locals, and people docked in the harbor. I can't tell you how many people I met, boats I sailed on, or drinks I had, what a blast I had back in the day! Great location, walk out the door & you are steps from the harbor and Front Street for shopping, restaurants & fun. This was (is?) old school Hawaii and was a great place to submerge yourself in local flavor-I hope it hasn't changed too much over the years.
