three and a half stars maybe.

we stayed at this hotel for a friend's wedding and it was pretty standard. the hotel itself is adorable, and the rooms are clean and well-functioning. the pool area also has a mini-putt, which is pretty neat, and the free breakfast was nice. the staff was wonderful- very friendly and helpful.

it's really central for wine tasting, only minutes from solvang, right next to peasoup andersen's, which is a bonus in my book, and has all the amenities of a mid-range hotel.

my big complaint about this hotel is that the walls were INCREDIBLY thin. every time my neighbors opened their doors i woke in a panic thinking someone was walking in on me. we could also hear every word of every conversation they had... including some *very interesting* after party sounds. girls, if you're reading this, you should probably work on your technique. i don't think it's supposed to sound like that.

Stayed at this hotel because it was near the Santa Ynez wineries and based on a friend's recommendation. No hype, just a nice place to stay overnight in Santa Ynez area.

The "Danish" look of the hotel, makes it unique from other Best Westerns in its class.
Putt putt and bocce ball court - we actually played a round in the morning before we departed. Good way to start the day :)
Free continental breakfast.
Clean rooms, nice linens and comfy beds.
Not bad for $113/night on a weekend night in mid summer.

We were here for graduation (6/13/2009) stayed here for one night in a double bed room.  Hotels in the area were booked super early for graduation, so this was it.  At the rate of $129, I felt it was a little high for a Best Western in a small little town like Buellton and about 35 minutes away from the campus (it felt like 45 minutes).

Hotel: A little run down looking on the outside, but because they recently remodeled, pleasantly surprise inside.

Pros: Free breakfast of coffee, juice, toast, danish, and muffins
Easy access to freeway
Clean remodeled rooms
Pool with BBQ area
plenty of parking
free wired internet (not WiFi)
yummy danishes

Cons: noisy fridge next the bed, but the we didn't hear any other noise unless we open the windows or sliding glass door
Did not see any elevators to the second floor for wheelchair accessibility
Shared balcony with guest room next door (not too bad if they never come out, but not very private either)
weak coffee
35 minutes to beaches and ucsb campus

I would recommend this hotel/motel for a short stay. Better than most hotel in this class.  Andersen Pea Soup restaurant is right next door with self-guided museum tour.  Pancake House just walking distance. Ostrich-land is on the way to Solvang (a little Dutch looking village) for tourist and probably a good place for breakfast too!

Our room has a nice view of the pool and the mini - golf area. The king size bed is comfortable. The only drawback for this hotel is their breakfast. I wish they had more food options for their breakfast. They only had some pastries, muffins, coffee, and juices. Most Best Western I stayed have waffle maker which you can make your own waffles. Hope they can add this to their breakfast selection in the future.

This is the perfect hotel to base your Santa Ynez valley travels.  Why?

Remodeled rooms with clean sheets and comfy beds.
Microwave, fridge, semi-private patios.
Free internet access.
Free breakfast!
$70-80 bucks/night (cheeeeap)
20 minutes tops to any winery in the Valley.

Done?  Done.  Enjoy.

In the world of hotels like this, this one is pretty awesome!  We booked a two night stay for one of the busiest holiday weekends, July 4th.  The total cost came out to about $220 which was about the same or a little less compared to similar hotels in the area.

The queen size bed is HUGE.  It feels like an extra wide queen size bed and you can even fit three people on it comfortably.  The room was very clean in all aspects.  The only thing I found annoying was the little window by the door doesn't have a curtain so light comes in and wakes you up no matter what.

Staff was very friendly.  Check-in and check-out was quick.  There's continental breakfast every morning and their danishes are okay.  If you want the best danishes of your life, make the quick five minute drive over to Solvang.

I didn't get to try the pea soup but I figure I wouldn't be the best judge of it anyway since I'm not a fan of the dish.

**UPDATED 8/12/08:
Stayed here again this past weekend but in one of their older, double bed rooms.  It wasn't nearly as clean and nice as my first visit's room.  But for the price, this will do just fine.  Parking is good.

My family and I decided to stay at Pea Soup Anderson's because everything in the Solvang area was booked. It's a lot cheaper than most of the places in Solvang with a similar exterior charm. We booked three rooms all located a room away. It wasn't the greatest hotel in the area that I've ever stayed at. Most of the stars are given because of their amenities and price. The room its self is only worth one star.

Pros:
-Pretty cheap: $105/night (we reserved our rooms a week before, so I'm assuming if you book earlier it'll be cheaper)
-Pool and Jacuzzi in the center of the hotel.
-Miniature golfing area (more like a green with a hole, nothing too exciting, but I've never seen one in a hotel before)
-Free breakfast: Danishes, muffins, coffee, juice...
-Free Wi-Fi. I'm not sure if it's wi-fi, because you have to connect it to a router with a cable that was only 2 feet long.
-Rooms had a microwave and small refridgerator
-There were bbq's near the pool, no one bbq-ed but I thought it was neat.

Cons:
-One of our beds (we had two queens) didn't have a fitted sheet. It was just a sheet wrapped around the bed.
-The bathroom doors are a sliding door. Ours would get stuck in the middle. We didn't get it to close until our second night, after shimmying and inincredible force..
-Our clock didn't work.

I'll probably come back if there's no other choice in Solvang proper.

I have memories of growing up, our family on road trips up the coast.  I couldn't wait to see the Anderson's signs on the 101, then countdown the exits till we arrived.  We would ALWAYS stop.  I think this is why I grew up loving split pea soup when all my friends wouldn't go near the stuff.

Sadly, the last few times I have visited this establishment as an adult, I have not been impressed.  The prices are high, the service is slow and less than welcoming.

My most recent visit was not long ago - after finishing a long bike ride in the Santa Ynez valley, a big bowl of split pea and a sandwich sounded perfect (that and a LOT of water).

We were seated in the less than crowded dining area promptly.  It took about 10 minutes for our waitress to come over - notebook out asking us what we wanted.  What we REALLY wanted was a couple glasses of bottomless water.  Another 10 minutes went by before we had our water and we placed our order.

Turkey Club for $10.  Added on the Pea Soup special for $5 (a bowl of pea soup + drink).

I walked out of the place spending $19, getting one coke, the sandwich was good but the fries were stale!  STALE!!!  I only got 2 refills of water.  We were met with a scowl every time our waitress visited the table.

It was an extremely unpleasant lunch.  Anderson's still has amazing split pea though.  I have learned my lesson.  Next time I visit - I will only get the split pea and I will bring my own water.

You know, hotels are expensive these days. And when i'm not going away for a romantic weekend (ha, what's that?!) I don't really need anything fancy. Just give me a nice bed to sleep in, a clean room and a safe area and I'm pretty much happy.

The BW Pea Soup Anderson's pretty much gives you all of this and the price tag is just right. Our room was $72 and was BIG. Like everyone else has mentioned, they have a gazillion cable channels. But the best part of this room for me was the really nice secluded patio right off the room where I could smoke. It was nicely blocked off by bushes so I could go outside and smoke first thing in the morning and not worry about the neighbors seeing me.

Next time I'm in the area, this will definitely be where I stay.

Someone once told us, the hotels in this region are either $100 or $400.  This is priced on the lower end of the range.

I enjoy staying here, as it is centrally located, right off the freeway (so you can avoid driving thru the center of Solvang to get to Los Olivos ...), etc.

Too, the rooms are adequate.  Some have balconies, some open to a patio and the pool / gazebo area.  The refrigerator is nice for wine, water or snacks.

Another nice touch is not only coffee in the room, but also the gazebo.  In the gazebo they also have a selection of danish, toast, etc. as well.

Lastly, if you need anything else you can walk to the mini mart at the gas station, Pea Soup Anderson (their cheese and garlic crackers are great!), or Ellen's and Mother Hubbard's for breakfast.

UPDATE (October 17, 2007):  Just back from the Harvest Festival and stayed there again.  The rooms have been upgraded again!!  Closet doors are now mirrored panels, the counter top of the dresser is now granite, a new cabinet for the microwave and tall dorm room style refrigerator, etc.  In the center of the courtyard, the putting green and gazebo have been upgraded again with soft drink dispensers (open 24 hours), coffee, etc.  We did a pot luck and took up food and cooked out on the new Weber gas grills they have there, and ate in the gazebo.

The people there have been upgraded as well, and beyond helpful.

If you are going for fancy, this isn't the place to stay. That being said, the bed's are comfy for the price, the room is a decent size, and it even comes stocked with a fridge and a microwave. This ends up being perfect to chill that wine you bought while wine tasting during the day.

The staff at this location are incredibly helpful. I went over Labor Day weekend this year and when they only had Friday night available, I called and told them I wanted Friday and Saturday night. They booked me for Friday and called me as soon as there was a cancellation. I ended up getting to stay both nights. This is rare in today's fast-paced internet world that a hotel worker would actually take the time to pick-up a phone and call and let you know.

I will definitely continue to stay here on my trips to the Santa Ynez valley. And with Best Western Rewards card (which is free, fyi) I will eventually earn a free stay. Granted, I only give this place 4 stars for the economical value for the area and not for the decor as the fancifulness is lacking.

This is our usual hotel when we're wine tasting in the area. Much like the Days Inn across the street, it's functional, no frills, but for some reason I find it slightly nicer than the Days Inn. Most importantly, it has a fridge. It also has a decent pool and jacuzzi; I've never seen anyone using the putting green, but that's there as well. I've always found service in the lobby to be friendly, and the rates are usually reasonable, especially if you get a good deal online. Unfortunately there is no free wi-fi. You can get an ethernet cable from the front desk, but the one they gave me didn't work. There's a complimentary continental breakfast in the gazebo, but as a hotel guest you can also get a discount at the Pea Soup Andersen's restaurant should you choose to eat there instead. It's convenient to the freeway, across from Ellen's Pancakes, close to the Santa Rita Hills AVA for wine tasting, a few miles from Solvang, and just down the street from the Firestone brewery.  The Buellton Chamber of Commerce is also hidden behind the restaurant, should you require additional tourist assistance. One of these days I'll actually stay in Solvang, but in the meantime, this always works.

For some reason I thought I hadn't reviewed this yet but it turns out I already had. Original review below:
-----

For my family, it's a tradition to stay here. When we were kids, our family would stay here when we went to Solvang, and as an adult, I stay here when I go wine tasting in the area. The location is perfect, the price is right, and the facilities are decent. There's a pool, the room includes a refrigerator (important when purchasing wine, especially in summer) and a microwave, and as the other reviewer mentioned, there are a million cable channels. The rooms are arranged in a square with a courtyard in the middle where the pool is located. One time, just to break from habit, I tried staying at the Day's Inn across the street, which is fairly similar but I find the service and amenities much better here. My main complaint, similar to Jill P., is that the beds are horribly uncomfortable. I tossed and turned all night and woke up sore. It's OK for one night, but after several days you can't wait to go home and sleep in your own bed. Overall, though, I still think this is a decent place to stay in the area and recommend it as a home base for wine tasting.

My stay here was July of 2006 and I enjoyed it very much, my only complaint is that internet access was not available in my room so I had to tote my laptop to the lobby everytime I needed to get some work done online.  The place was comfortable and I would stay there again.  I would say the most fun was being able to BBQ a steak on the outside Weber grills they have in the inner courtyard, next to the peewee golf (also fun).
There is a big grocery store nearby (it was Albertson's at the time, it's probably a Lucky's or a SaveMart by now) about half a mile away, that's where I got my steak and whatever else.  Refrigerators and Microwaves in the room are a very big plus.
The famous Danish community of Solvang is only a few miles from this hotel and the Pea Soup restaurant is right next door, the best part being the very good Danish pastries they have.  Speaking of the pastries, they have Elephant Ears if you like those....they are hard to find elsewhere, at least in my experience.
Nice gift shop, too.
I would love to give them 5 stars, but no internet access in the rooms is a very big minus, so bye-bye to 1 star.

we stayed one night on our drive from los angeles to the san francisco bay area. we know, that drive should only be five hours along the 5, but when you have a chance to try a rich, smoky barbequed steak and danish pancakes to die, and taste a few santa barbara wines in a one-stop shop, then we think it's worth the extra night.

the room was about $20 cheaper than the other places, and it was actually quite pleasant. it looked like they recently renovated the bathroom and we had access to free wifi. it was still very convenient to solvang while being close to other ammenities (like a mcdonalds for that late-night run for a chocolate-dipped soft serve). the heating/cooling unit can be loud if you don't like that kind of white noise when you sleep.

I have fond memories stopping at Pea Soup on the way to L.A. as a child. I think it was the one off the 5 - but this is the original.  For breakfast, I had the traveller's special - unlimited soup, a milkshake, and two kinds of fresh baked bread. I was embarrassed at my bizarre choice, then noticed at least two tables eating the same thing. Sometimes, you just want your shake and soup, no matter what time.

The famous Anderson's Pea Soup... may possibly be overrated.  The pea soup, although good, wouldn't make me drive 300 miles just to taste it.  My parents tell me they can make a better pea soup.  I ordered a meal with the traveler's special (basically all you can eat soup w/ a choice of drink - I chose milkshake).  There is no way you can eat more than 1 bowl of pea soup.  If you can, there is no way you would want to.

A decent place to rest your head for a night or two, but don't expect it to be comfortable.  My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights, and woke up with neck and back cramps both days after nights filled with tossing and turning.  The pluses: any cable channel you can imagine (including my favorite, Discovery Health Channel) and it's relatively cheap for this area and on a weekend.  Just go drink lots of wine at the nearby wineries and you'll forget about the neck and back pain.

It's a nostalgia thing, nothing more.  The soup was so-so.  Best was the gift area.  When you see all the Pea Soup Andersen signs on the freeway, you just have to stop.  Besides, my hubby worked there as a teenaager so I had to check it out!  He was leaving on a trip to Australia and told them he had to quit so he could go into rehab!!! :)
