So living off of El Cajon Blvd.. until I moved recently.. I had casually noticed the Best Western (BW) on my way around the hood.  I never had a reason to go to the place.. just drive by until my family came into town for my graduation in May.
My whole family- aunt, grandpa, step grandma, my mom and her partner all stayed at the BW this is including Kirby (one of our three poodles).

Let me say.. this place is quiet, clean as well decorated as you can get without getting a 5 star price tag to go with it.

The BW- when you check in gives you a gift bag with a "bodice ripper"- as my grandpa calls it romance novel and a bunch of coupons to different attractions around San Diego like Sea World and the Zoo.

The BW- includes a pool.. which my cousins tried out with pool side tables and a grill which we didn't notice until we actually were hanging out at the pool.

BW- also provides a free breakfast- you can make your own waffles, three or was it four different kinds of cereal, bagels and fresh fruit- not to mention coffee and the comfortable seating in the breakfast room.

My aunt was worried about the level of noise at the BW- and was pleasantly surprised by how quiet the place was both at night and during the day.  I personally think the empty field behind the place.. has something to do with- not to mention El Cajon Blvd.. really quiets down by 8pm.

So more about the rooms- they seem to be half way through remodeling the BW- upper floors lack the granite counter tops and new decor that the lower level floors have.  However- the mattresses were AWESOME!  Everybody in my family raved about the mattresses.  My grandfather hasn't slept so well in years- gave my step grandma a scare when he was still in bed at 8 am in the morning- sleeping no less!  Even stayed an extra day just to catch more Z's.

Kirby- our pansy poodle boy- told us that the pet potty area was small but  came with a great lawn, the BW charges you $15 a night for your furry guest and raved about the bed being awesome to nap on while the owners were in the room- when he wasn't locked in a crate or out with our family.

As my aunt put it- this is a 5 star hotel- with the name Best Western and a 2 star price tag.  So I highly recommend staying at the BW on El Cajon Blvd.

Very clean and comfortable, reasonably quiet, very reasonble price, friendly staff. Not in a great area for walking. No fridge???? In room Wifi and pool available. I met the manager, David Brit, and he is great guy, really into running a high quality hotel.

Okay .. So I won't state my reasons as to why I ever went to an Inn in San Diego (haha !) but I'd say the price is decent. It was about 60 bucks at the time for two days and one night if I remember correctly. They have a swimming pool, too -- it's big enough so it won't be so awkward swimming with strangers. The beds are huge, big enough to fit at least 3 people. They have cable TV which is always nice. Bottled waters are expensive though and they charge by how much you end up using. Not too sure if they had a dining hall ?? We went out and bought our own food and drinks. Location is convenient, there's a gas station close by with snacks and the such. We went during a hot summer and their A/C was heavenly. Five stars for the awesome experience.

We travel from L.A. to San Diego fairly often. We always stay at the Lamplighter... for one reason: David Birt, the manager.

We used to stay at the Old Town Inn, which is a lovely motel and one we would also highly recommend. David used to work there. Both are a part of the Lion Family Hotel Group. But, when David was transferred to the Lamplighter, we chose to follow him.

The Lamplighter is a middle of the road motel in an uninteresting area of town, but it is a clean, comfortable, friendly place to stay. The rooms are nice and the staff is accommodating. Smoking rooms are available. They are always located on the top floor. Smoke rises. Non-smokers on the ground floor shouldn't be discomfited. There are a couple of two-room suites available at a reasonable rate. Call ahead to reserve.

Fair disclosure: We have become fast friends with David and he gives us a nice rate. That said, for a mid-range motel, this place is very worthy of your consideration.

Continental breakfast (with Belgian waffles) is served through 10am. Your room will be clean and your bed will be comfortable. Situated on El Cajon Blvd... the motel is within easy access of Interstate 8.

The Lamplighter is not a resort. If you want a huge hotel with restaurants, fitness center and la-ti-da... it's not your place. If you're on a budget and want a nice place to sleep that is convenient, then this is your place. It is a nice motel with a sparkling pool and clean, comfortable rooms. Don't forget your AAA discount.

This really is a gem of a place.  We have to go down to San Diego often to visit my mom who lives in El Cajon.  I looked high and low online for a small, low-priced hotel and, honestly that is no easy task.  You never know what you are getting yourself into.  We decided upon the Lamplighter based on reviews and it was the right choice.  This place is really clean and David Brit, the General Manager, is the nicest man as is the entire staff there.  We always get a nice room and they make you feel so welcome.  There is free breakfast and internet connection.  It's in a really convenient location.

dear best western,

you were mildly better than the howard johnson down the street. you didn't have the room i wanted, but you found me a nice one, and with an extra bed for when i needed my own space. it was at the end of a long, long trip, you know. you weren't cheap, not by the standard at which i had come appreciate anyway, but your night staff person did give me a little discount. your day staff person was pretty nice, too. the pool with the palm trees was a nice touch, especially when the man-friend locked me out of the room for a while. thanks for being a friend, if only for those two short nights.

sincerely,
irene s

This is a great little motel!  All the people we encountered at the reception desk all seem to be genuinely warm and chipper.  Twice we got a free upgrade to a room with microwave and refrigerator.  This is perfect to pick up some food from Senor Pancho to save and re-heat for later.  Anyway, this location of this Best Western is relatively convenient and the parking is never a problem.  I read in another site that their lot fills up after a certain time but I have never observed that.  A great motel with a even better price!
