San Juan Island is a fine escape from the routine, and the Friday Harbor Suites are a good choice for a weekend getaway. We enjoyed our clean, quiet room and the relaxed environment of the island. You can leave your vehicle behind and visit as a pedestrian because the Friday Harbor Suites offers a courtesy shuttle from the ferry; however, I'd recommend bringing your car or motorcycle on the ferry with you, or you will miss some of the features that San Juan Island offers, such as Roche Harbor and the American/English Encampments.
If you want a quiet weekend away from Portland or Seattle's traffic, this is a great change of pace. If you're a photographer or birdwatcher, I'm sure you'll be very pleased.
For scuba divers, there are wonderful opportunities for boat diving, but you will need a vehicle for shorediving. The underwater visibility is impressively good, biodiversity is excellent, and marine life is abundant. There's a dive shop near the ferry for air refills and accessories.
A weekend's lodging at the Friday Harbor Suites and dining in the area may stretch your budget; it is not inexpensive, and there are few bargains to be found, but we had a fine weekend and look forward to returning to it.

This is one of the most remotely located of the Friday Harbor hotels and it is still only a ten minute walk from the ferry, which should give you some idea how small (and walkable) Friday Harbor is. If you cannot walk, they will shuttle you to or from "downtown" on request.
The hotel has no particular frills other than a bar and a restaurant, but the bar was convenient. There is a free breakfast if you wake up early enough. If you don't, the Rocky Bay Cafe is rather nice and not far. There is occasional noise from landing or starting airplanes as the airstrip is close by, but they are few and small.
Our two bedroom suite was gigantic, a bit worn, and clean. I might have considered giving this four stars had it been less expensive but $300 per night wasn't exactly cheap, even for a large room. Still, there are not many other hotels in Friday Harbor with rooms large enough to accomodate two adults and three kids (but there may be some where $300 gets you two separate rooms). In all a fine stay but no wow.
I had a wonderful stay here at the Best Western - Friday Harbor Suites in Washington State. I was visiting family in the area and stayed here with my two kids. Located right on San Juan Island, we were able to go on a whale watch cruise and enjoy all the shops and galleries right on the water. The rooms were comfortable and clean. Amazing stay!! A bit pricey for where it is located, far from the coast, no view, poor parking. But the rooms were great! It was like living in a house!! Some places say "Suites" and you get there it's just two rooms. These are REAL suites!!
