A drive from AZ back to CA required a stop midway (2 kids, 2 adults and 1 cat, we need a rest!). I picked up one of those hotel discount guides and began looking. We knew we weren't going  for the cheap, as we didn't want to pick up icky bugs or sleep on bad beds. This one caught our eye as it said Pet Friendly and new mattresses and linens.

Check in was great, for all 4 of us (and the cat, which the guy at the desk didn't charge us for) was $70. We were on the street level and didn't hear much but a train or two slowly rumble by.

CLEAN room, no funky smells, clean linens, FAT fluffy pillows (4 to each bed), nice towels (on the bigger end for hotel towels). Micro and Fridge in the room. Good room!

The breakfast in the am was ok, make your own Belgian waffles, cereals, bread for toast, with jams and pb. Only 1 orange and a few apples, blech. But the COFFEE?????? I think someone forgot a FEW scoops of coffee, it was bland and barely had any taste! Had to spring for Bucks to get our engines going.

All in All, a GREAT experience, the place has obviously had a major overhaul since the reviews in 2008 and earlier.

I had read some reviews online that indicated that this place wasn't located in all that great of a location, so I wasn't really expecting much.  This place ended up way exceeding my expectations.  Check in and check out were fast, the room was as clean as it could possibly be, and there were good amenities.  It was a major plus for me that they had a microwave in the room.  The free continental breakast had a decent selection, but I didn't really check it out as I just grabbed a couple of things and left.

This place is located pretty close to the freeway, so you may hear the sound of passing cars from your room depending probably on how close to the street your room is located.  The slight noise didn't bother me, but it might matter for someone who would find that to be distracting.

All in all, this was a nice place to stay at and I would recommend it to others.

This was the best hotel of the 7 we stayed during our 7-day motorcycle trip.  I really enjoyed the towel elephants.  Breakfast, clean room and shower, let me park my bike on the concrete so it didn't sink into the asphalt.  I liked it.

Desert Villa?????????  I didn't realize this was the official name until I wrote the review, and this knocked a star right off!

This is a lower-end, older Best Western.  It, like all (most?) BWs are pet friendly, so that's a plus.  It does back up on to Main, the highway, the tracks, and a trailer park, which shares the driveway witht the "villa."  In fact, the parking lot is actually the entire street leading to the trailer park, but no matter.

The room itself seemed fine.  Very dark, until I hit every light, and then it was almost charming.  Bed was clean and comfortable.  WiFi was nice.  Staff was nice to us, mostly, although the first one was downright rude and not really willing to help us find a place to eat.  Breakfast bar tried hard--fresh waffles! but generally was meh.

The morning we checked out, I noticed that the bathroom was downright filthy disgusting in ways that will give me nightmares for life.  Double meh.

If you have to stay in Barstow, there are a lot worse places you could stay at... (I could name a few, but I won't). Busy, boring,  basic, lower-end Best Western accomodation, good-sized rooms, effective air conditioning (hell, it gets hot in Barstow), good internet access, etc.; in other words, reasonable value for money as long as you're not expecting luxury or Architecture with a capital "A".

It's not really within walking distance of anything (does anyone ever really walk in Barstow anyway?), so be prepared to drive to get coffee or food (not that there's a great deal of good food in Barstow anyway). The car entrance off East Main (which is not where Yelp's map entry puts it, by the way) is a rather nasty blind corner, so watch out when you enter or exit (I've seen two accidents there in the time I've stayed there).

We signed up online for this Best Western to be our first stop between San Francisco and Oklahoma, primarily because I wrote that some of the characters in my movie arefrom Barstow.  So much for nostalgia...  singularly surly staff... backing onto a train track with trains running every ten minutes wasn't as big a turn-off as it originally appeared... in fact we'll take free magic fingers vibrating us to sleep any night of the week.  However, a little movie action was first required and that amenity was not available for no other reason than "oh, we have problems with that from time to time."  The guru who was supposed to solve the problem never appeared... it wasn't until the next day that we learned that "the spa" is only available with "certain rooms."   We also could not connect to the Internet... so much for amenities!  Overall... we had fun, but mostly it was as a result of their lack of attention!  Think about it.
