6 reviews for Best Western - De Anza Inn
I stayed here one night, after spending the night before at the nearby Hyatt and I was dreading what I thought would be a serious down-grade in accommodations.
To my delight & surprise, this particular Best Western was pretty upscale! It had an interior lobby (vs. entering your room directly from the parking lot), FREE internet & wireless access, free breakfast (fruit, pastries, cereal, coffee), spacious/clean/quiet rooms, and an impressive koi (those fish are expensive!) pond in the lobby.
The staff were helpful, professional, and friendly. The owners/staff clearly take pride in their independently-owned motel.
I will definitely be staying here again on future Monterey visit & will be recommending this hotel to friends/family.
Good rates too -- we got a senior's discount while traveling with my aunt. Centrally located, close to the highway & downtown Monterey.
I have to say that I am a big fan of Best Westerns but I was extremely happy with what I paid for at the De Anza Inn. I first walked in and was greeted by the front desk clerk who was very cheerful and very polite. He gave me my key and some information along with a map of Monterey. He also let me know that there was free Wi-fi. I didn't really care too much about that at first because of how tired I was. I went up to the 3rd floor to my room and BOY was I surprised! The room was HUGE and very nicely decorated. Nothing looked outdated. The color scheme worked very well. Everything was neat and clean. There was a coffee maker, microwave, fridge, plenty of light, an iron and an ironing board. Did I mention they have free cable? The beds are queen sized and ooooh so comfortable. The pillows weren't flat and were just extremly fluffy. I LOVE nice pillows! My back is very sensitive and it's not uncommon for me to wake up with back pain from a funky bed. I have to say that I felt perfectly fine in the morning when I woke up.
When I first started looking around for rooms in Monterey, I was just looking for the best price. I found them using http://hotels.com. I was able to use my AAA membership to get the room (during peak season) for 107 a night. With taxes it came out to just over 118. TOTALLY worth it in my opinion.
The hotel amenities also includes a pool and jacuzzi which I did not get to try out. They also include a continental breakfast.
The next time I decide to stay out in Monterey, I will definitely consider staying here again.

Great value along with a great rate- I paid $89 for 3 nights and $99 for one of the nights. It looks more like a fancy business suite than a regular run-of-the-mill hotel room, and that was a pleasant surprise.
Pros:
high-speed internet, really nice business desk, comfortable beds, clean rooms, micro/fridge, 3 windows overlooking the pool with a nice view, Koi pond in the front lobby was aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable to watch.. They had great housekeepers who were thorough and accommodating. There were days where my partner and I could not leave until around 1pm and they still managed to straighten up our room, take out our trash, and stock any towels, etc even though they are supposed to be done by 2pm technically. We really appreciated them.
Cons:
-Bad smell like an old man's B.O. in the hallways, which is most likely coming from the Koi pond in the lobby. The pond looks very clean and well-maintained, so I can't fault management. Koi are just stinky fish and I don't think it's a problem that can really be helped other than to remove them from the lobby, which would be a shame because they are beautiful. -
-Whirlpool had no temp control so it was only at around 85-90 degrees and low water pressure from the jets, so it seemed more like a hot bubble bath than a hot tub.
Bottom Line: By far the best Best Western I have ever stayed in!
Hands down the nicest BW I've stayed at. Total quiet. The amenities were updated and simple- the room was clean and really a great size for two people. The staff was courteous and helpful. Parking was ample at the time. What really put the cherry on the top was the price- it couldn't be beat for the quality that was delivered.
The only meh was the breakfast... but then again I slept in and there wasn't much left to choose from!
I don't know what it is about Best Westerns, but regardless of where we are in the world, from Texas to Italy, our family seems to always gravitate towards this chain.
With so many hotels to choose from, including several other BWs in Monterey, I settled on the De Anza. It was inexpensive, and it received consistently good reviews on other sites. I was concerned about getting a good night's sleep, and I knew that noise was an issue if staying at one of the many motor inns that are prevalent in the area. Thankfully, this hotel has hallways, as opposed to accessing your room from the outside. It offered privacy and security without having to pay at least $100/night extra as you would staying at Portola Plaza or the Marriott downtown. Yet, it wasn't a dump--far from it, in fact. The hallways were wide and angular, and the rooms were just as clean and spacious. Even a room facing the street wasn't noisy. And nothing beats a phone by the john.
The service was flawless, graciously accommodating our requests to check-in earlier and check-out later than expected. Tickets to the Aquarium are also offered, two days for the price of one (though, you really only need to spend a day there, especially if you're not with kids). The concierge thought I qualified for a children's ticket; to this day, I'm still trying to figure out if that's a good or bad sign.
The only downside I can come up with is that it isn't located where all the action is downtown, but rather, within a few minutes drive. But with several garages nearby, finding parking isn't nearly as bad as it is in the City, so the pros greatly outweigh this con.

I am staying at this Best Western, as I type this review. Free WiFi! I've stayed here before during a family 'vacation' this past winter, and now, during this crazy SF Bay Area heat wave weekend in April.
I do like it because of the interior corridors - limits the noise and foot traffic. I've been fortunate to get rooms facing west on the second floor, or the back of the building. Parking is decent and close. There's an elevator which is nice after a long day out. I booked this room last-minute using CSAA, last night, and I got a great room - it must be a king suite, on the NW corner of the building. *from the BW - De Anza Inn website - availability started next weekend.* The last time I stayed here, there was some large group incident at the Denny's next door - about a dozen or so people were making a lot of noise and the PD had to regulate at 2 AM or something.
The continental breakfast is basic, better than nothing. Both rooms that I've stayed in have a microwave and a mini-refrigerator. There's plenty of outlets (at least in this room) to charge cell phones, laptops, and other peripherals.
I think the greatest thing is the free high speed WiFi. As for noise - the room upstairs has some kids that like to complain, cry, and run around. I always have earplugs when I travel, unfortunately, I didn't use them during the Denny's incident last time I was here.
So, aside from the possible noise from surrounding rooms... I would stay here again because of 1) free high speed WiFi; 2) basic continental breakfast/fruit and hot drinks throughout the day; 3) for the area, reasonably priced ($107.10/night); 4) clean, comfortable, and modernly furnished rooms; 5) decent accessibility from CA-1; and 6) it's near one of my favorite Chinese food restaurants here in Monterey (I haven't been there in a while, maybe for dinner tonight).
Happy traveling!
*update - I would give it 4.5 stars, in the end. Their continental breakfast was slim this time around (hot tea/coffee/cocoa, some basic pastries, and bananas/apples); it looks like they have partnered with the Denny's next door. I got a $3/off a morning-order coupon when I checked in.*
