10 reviews for Best Western Coconut Waikiki Hotel
Shagadelicious ultra retro moderne chic stylishness!
Style seeps through the pores, the smooth and tasty color palette, the galactic mirrors in the hallways, the tubular pillow and pair of red ubergroovy lamps beside the comfortable and expansive King-size bed. The furniture in the room and even bathroom raise your hipster level if not in the eyes of those around you, at least in your own mind.
And it's not only style. There's substance in the friendliness of the staff, who were bringing the aloha in abundance. Always available and willing to help, offering towels for your trip to the beach, extra amenity's for your room and even offering use of their BBQ set up out back. But we're on vacation, we're not cooking!
Free morning breakfast, with DIY waffles, pineapple, hard boiled eggs, cereals, danishes, juices and coffee.
Refreshingly, icy tasty lemon-water and coffee available 24/7 in the lobby, along with computers at the ready for your websurfing needs.
Microwave and mini-fridge are good for your leftovers.
But reality comes in the cons:
-Valet only parking (and at about $21 a day) gets a bit steep. Some may see this as a good thing in the difficult to park Waikiki. Nevertheless, the staff does their best, and gets your car out to you quickly and without hassle.
-"City View" is a pretty rotten view. Don't know what "Mountain View" looks like, but if at all possible, avoid City View unless you don't mind leaving your blinds and curtains closed during your whole stay.
Bottom line, was it good, would I come back? Yeah, if cool is your thing, be cool.
Started going to this hotel YEARS ago when it was owned by the Aston and then Resort Quest. My hubby and I would rent rooms here for weekends we knew we were going to be down in Waikiki a lot partying and having a good time when we lived there.
Love that it is Valet only! I don't like self-parking hotels. Bleh! I don't mind the extra cost, as long as I don't have to take the time to park it myself in a crowded parking garage!
EVERYTIME we have come here we reserve just a "hotel" room and the staff recognizes us, no matter how long it's been and they always upgrade us up to a 1 Bedroom Condo no fee's included! Don't quote me on this, especially if your a visitor to the islands b/c this is more of a Kamaaina deal... sorry! ;)
My boyfriend and I got a deal for the Best Western Coconut Waikiki on Expedia, so it's hard for me to say how much we paid per night, but it was one of the cheapest places that we found. For the value, it did not disappoint!
ROOM: 5/5. Nice comfy king-sized bed with clean white sheets. I loved that the room followed the palette of the two paintings on the walls - light green, white, aqua, red. Sliding glass doors opened out onto our very own balcony (I think every room has a balcony!). We had a beautiful view of Ala Wai Canal (see my pictures). There was a microwave and mini-fridge and a sink right there at the bar! They even provided plates and silverware in addition to the requisite cups. This came in really handy when we had beer (had some great local brews) or leftover food in our room. There was a big flatscreen TV (which, I'll admit, we barely used) and a nice comfy chair to sit in. Also, FREE WI-FI throughout the hotel! No fees, no limit to how many computers you can connect to the router!
BATHROOM: 3.5/5. Nice and clean with a pretty sink and mirror, but the shower curtain smelled old. Looked clean, but smelled like mildew. Suppose I should have complained, but it didn't bother me enough to do so, I guess.
STAFF: 5/5. Helpful, friendly. There's even a concierge to help you with activities and stuff.
CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST: 4/5. Make your own waffles! There are also boiled eggs, assorted pastries (which changed daily), fruit, cereal, and toast. I really appreciate when hotels offer more than just boxed cereal!
MANAGER'S RECEPTION: 4/5. On Thursday afternoon, they served unlimited "cocotinis" (sprite, Malibu, and grenadine) - not that strong, but I had 3 and it put me in a nice mood :) They also had a Wii with a few games to choose from - my boyfriend and I played Guitar Hero and an archery game =p We had fun, but not that many people showed up, so we didn't get to chitchat very much. Regardless, I was impressed that the hotel did something like this.
This hotel wasn't really luxurious, as you'd expect, but it was damn good for the money. I felt like they really do things with care, from the decor to the breakfast. I'd recommend it to anyone traveling on a budget!
My new most favorite hotel on Oahu. I come often because my family lives here, and we have stayed at some amazing hotels. We stay most often at the Halekulani, but in recent years they have raised the price of the rooms far and away above the value of their worth. So, this trip and in this economy we decided to do a bidget Hawaii and my research led me to the Best Western Coconut. This is a wonderful hotel, top notch service and very low prices. You could not get better value. Large flat screen tv, kitchenette, free wireless, good bed & linen, free breakfast (impressive spread). We are coming again in the spring when my brother graduates from high school and will definitely be staying at the Best Western Coconut.
~*~ I booked a King-sized room and it had ONE very comfortable King-Size bed, 1 (very small) bathroom with just a shower unit (no bath tub), and a little kitchen/dining area with table and 2 chairs, and a mini fridge, with a microwave. Cabinets have plates and cups for 2.
~*~ Breakfast--Although it's considered a continental breakfast...it' is MUCH better! You can make your own waffles every morning and they are THICK and very YUMMY. There's fresh pastries, boiled eggs, toast, cereal, oatmeal, fresh pineapple or orange juice, and the best part....FRESH CUT PINEAPPLE. You can also take some to your room.
~*~ Staff--The staff is sooo friendly. I loved our receptionist, and our valet. All so friendly!!! They will also loan towels if you want to go down to the beach.
~*~ Location--I liked how our hotel was not too close to the beach and the main street in Waikiki. It's located right next to the Ala Moana Canal. You can walk to Waikiki beach and all the stores in 10-15 minutes. International Marketplace is also a 10 minute walk. Everything is nearby.
~*~ There is a very small pool with a waterfall, but I did not go down to that area since I didn't have a lot of time. I did see others outside enjoying it though. Also did not take advantage of the cocotinis I have read about. I am not a drinker, so that did not matter to me.
~*~Free wi-fi in your rooms and hotel. There are also 4 computers in the lobby that you can use for free. Printers are free as well. Comes in handy if you need to print maps or directions to other places.
Had the best time in Hawaii and loved the Coconut Wikiki Hotel!
CONS:
-$22 a day for valet parking.
-Since it's valet you have to tip each time you go in and out with your car.
-The room was small with little storage space, small closet, no dresser drawers.
(but you are never in the hotel room anyways!)
Those are the only cons...
The pros far outweigh the cons!
PROS:
-very clean, and well kept
-good location, close to main street and the beach
-very nice and friendly staff
-good breakfast- various pastries, milk, cereal, pineapples, juice, coffee, waffles, toast, hard boiled eggs
-free computers in the lobby with free printer use
-free wi-fi in the room
-big tv with cable channels
-comfy bed
-microwave and refrigerator in the room
-iron, ironing board, blow dryer in room
-the front desk lets you borrow beach towels and beach mats
STAY at the coconut, save a little money to do fun things in Hawaii! It has the BEST value for your money!
I REALLY enjoyed staying at this hotel.
When we were looking for a hotel in Hawaii, we were a little skeptical about staying at a Best Western. However, this hotel is rated #2 on http://tripadvisor.com and we fully enjoyed our stay here.
Pros:
1) Our room--We booked a SUITE and it was fabulous!! King-sized bed that was very comfortable. We had a living room with a pull out queen, 1.5 bathrooms, and a little kitchen/dining area. Every floor at this hotel has one suite. BOOK IT if you can. The other rooms looked very small and uncomfortable.
2) Breakfast--Although it's considered a continental breakfast...it's better! You can make your own waffles every morning. There's fresh pastries, boiled eggs, toast, cereal, oatmeal, fresh papaya or pineapple or orange juice, and the best part....FRESH CUT PINEAPPLE. I probably ate 20 pieces every morning. No joke. You can also take some to your room.
3) Staff--The staff is sooo friendly. I loved our receptionist, our maid, and our valet. All so friendly!!!
4) Location--I liked how our hotel was not too close to the beach and the main street in Waikiki. It's located right next to the Ala Moana Canal. You can walk to Waikiki beach and all the stores in 10-15 minutes. International Marketplace is also a 10 minute walk. Everything is nearby.
5) Free wi-fi in your rooms and hotel. There are also 4 computers in the lobby that you can use for free. Printers are free as well. AWESOME!
Cons
1) $22 for parking/day. This adds up. BUT....I liked having our car ready for us each morning. We would call the receptionist to have our car ready and they would have it ready for us at the door by the time we got down. They are VERY fast! I didn't tip every time they brought the car...that would have been a hassle. Instead I tipped the main valet guy at the end of our trip. He was the one that got our car all the time anyways.
2) Swimming Pool--Their swimming pool is nice and clean....kind of small. BUT...the major con was that it was FREEZING cold!
3) Decor--a little bit TOO green. The hotel was modernized..but it's really green!!!
HUGE TIP: Before you book this hotel through orbitz or expedia or any of those other websites...visit the hotel's website. We actually got a great deal on the suite because they had a special deal for booking 60 days in advance. They have lots of other deals to choose from. Take a look at it before you book!
I struggled between 4 or 5 stars. But honestly there was nothing wrong with this place at all. For the DEAL that I got online $90 a night - a brand new hotel (everything redone in June) it was awesome.
Nice modern lobby, small room but ideally set up with everything you could need. Including a mini fridge and large flatscreen tv.
A great free breakfast everyday and free wifi in the rooms, as well as nice computer and free printing stations in the lobby. All you pay is the $22 a night parking fee - which HAS to be valet. It always took less than 5 minutes to get my car.
Off the main waikiki stretch but super close to walk and right near the street to get to H1.
The staff are very friendly and kind, I felt like they could be my friends too.
We haven't even checked out yet and I can't stop raving about this hotel! When I was looking at hotels - I narrowed it down to this place and the Sheraton on the beach......well the Coconut won out.
The location is perfect - right on the corner of Ala Wai Blvd and Lewers Street. Only 10 floors with 10 rooms per floor. We checked in and dropped our stuff and headed out. The walk to Kalakaua (beach) is only 3 blocks - took us literally 7 minutes. When we got back we had a problem with the door to our room (we couldn't get in) - they spent about 5 minutes diagnosing the problem and then moved us to another room (right next door) instead of making us wait and wait (from time of problem to new room was about 20 minutes). Free internet in lobby, -free wi-fi in rooms (the Sheraton wanted $10 a day). Mini fridge, microwave, plates/cups/utensils. Daily continental breakfast (hey - its free, who cares if it is just fruit, coffee, tea, cereal, toast, hard boiled eggs, small pastries), we even had a cocktail time with the house drink - a Cocotini. The "con's" are soooo trivial that I won't even bother with them. Stay here! Jamal at the front desk is a star!!!
This "two star" hotel surprised me on our recent visit with its "continental breakfast" of juice, coffee, and muffins. Not the best certainly, but more then I expected.
Friendly front desk peoples and the cleaning staff left some cookies in our room- but only on one out of three days staying there. What's that about?
In any case
I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to HI and trying to save their money for alcohol and doing touristy things.
Be prepared for small rooms with a smallish bed (good enough for a couple).
