While I didn't pay the 250 for a room with a balcony overlooking the ocean, my 130 dollar room with a window view of the ocean was just as good. Peaceful place, like no other I have been to. You feel like you're in the middle of no where. They have firepits set up at night, people are just sitting on chairs and relaxing. You can hear the ocean from your room. Really, felt like I was in a different world. It was lovely.
Also, is pet friendly. It's pretty close to the Hearst Castle as well. Will post pics.

Wow, this place was a surprise! There aren't any hotels within close proximity to Hearst Castle & so you're pretty much stuck with motels which can be hit or miss. Our room was clean & tidy and we had a great view of the ocean and had a fireplace. And most importantly the bathroom was CLEAN. Furniture was outdated but I wasn't expecting that much on that end. It is pricey for a motel, like $250/night but it obviously had to do with the beachfront location. They have fire pits on a lawn facing the ocean that they lit everynight which was a nice touch & there are paths down to the beach. I can't remember the name of the restaurant that's attached to the motel but it had surprisingly good food. Take the drive north to the lighthouse around sunset, you won't be sorry. I would totally stay here again.

I probably would have had a great experience at this place, if not for the less than desirable location of my room - right at the top of the stairs. So I was fortunate enough to bear witness to partons of the hotel bidding each other prolonged good nights before they parted ways at the top of the stairs (using their outdoor voices, of course), as well as the hotel staff, who...you know, always has loud voices. So here's a big thank you to the staff for giving me this prime room, and for reminding me throughout the morning and night that I was not alone.
Well normally, I wouldn't blame the hotel for something like this. But come on. It's off season. It's the middle of the week. I'm sure there were plenty of other ocean view rooms available, not just that one. Why on earth didn't they give me one of those?
The room itself was pretty nice. The ocean view was awesome, and you're close enough to hear the waves crashing all day and all night. The patio was prefect for lounging on the deck with a book and enjoying the sights and sounds of the sea. Bathrooms were equipped with cotton balls, q-tips, makeup remover, and bathrobes. The fireplaces were a nice touch, though I did note the irony of having a non smoking room with a wood burning fire place. I'm glad that instead of being purely ornamental, they actually did a pretty good job of warming the entire room.
It's unfortunate that I came here to enjoy the scenery and escape everyday life, but one thing I couldn't escape was the sound of my neighbors.

Please don't think of this as a Best Western.
Or a Holiday Inn, or any other regular roadside hotel.
This is really great place to stay.
It has a very 50's feel to me. Not in style, per se, but in function.
We got a ocean view room, and it actually has a wood burning fire pit in the room. Not a fireplace, but more like stove meets chimnea.
We also had our own private balcony. Great views of the ocean and of the bonfires at night. And people really went out and gathered around them; met and talked to other travelers. I'm telling you, very route 66 thing going on.
Rooms were spacious, and price was extremely reasonable. If you are traveling in the area, this is the only place to stay!

This place was great exept for the fact that we paid for oceanview and got pool and hot tub view! Back door opens right to the beach! Would have been a nice sunset, but the weather was a bit gloomy and chilly! The fire place kept us warm! The room was pretty nice! Bed was comfortable! They provided fire pits at night on the lawn outside! The price was a bit much, but you get to stay right on the coast, so I guess it was worth it! Don't expect a free continental breakfast though!
All that's missing is a microwave but our room is clean and spacious. I am looking forward to using the fireplace tonight. I'm typing this from our oceanview room, so the wifi is consistent. My best friend was impressed. My boyfriend is on the balcony, watching the tide with the hotel binoculars.
Staff had allowed us to check in an hour early. The basket by the sink is filled with cleansing wipes, nail polish remover sheets, and Neutrogena products. The sliding doors mute the sound of the ocean to a soothing rumble. We delayed our tour of Hearst Castle by a day to walk along the fantastic beach. We haven't heard any of our neighbors and we're waiting for the sunset now.
I have NEVER stayed at a nicer Best Western. After staying here I was so impressed that I would only stay at Best Western's in other cities, until recently, when I found that none can compare.
The rooms are spacious and gorgeous. The ocean view is lovely, and the bathtubs are big!
Great stay for a romantic weekend visiting the castle.

Book an ocean front room! Ours was on the ground floor and ~$199-250 a night, a bargain for the view and fireplace.
Everything everyone else says plus it's dog friendly. One guest had four dogs in his room and you can have both a romantic weekend plus your dog can have happy frolicking on the beach.
I tried booking online with no avail, July 4th weekend, but calling them directly I got the last ocean front room!
The nicest best western including the one in Napa I've seen! I want to go back again and again.

The hotel was really nice. We got an awesome room right on the cliff and even though most of the weekend was super foggy and we couldn't see much it was still nice to hear the ocean so close. The one thing I didn't liek was that there was no screen on the sliding glass door so we couldn't leave it open at night. But there was a window that had a screen the we did open.
The bathtub was so deep I was floating. I actually had the work to keep myself down. It was awesome. I love big tubs.
The restuarant connected the the hotel was ok. nothing to write home about.
They had a nice package that included a Hearst Castle tour and since it was out anniversary we sprang for the pricey room.

Just one word......Peaceful.
We went there for lunch at the resturaunt. 2 groups of people at the restaurant besides us. Excellent waitress, great food, I had the Teriyaki Chicken, very satisfying. I wish I stayed at the hotel because if it is as good as the restaurant, it would be very peaceful.

You cant find a better value. Especially if you have pets in tow.
We love to drink a bottle of wine and light a fire. cuddle with the pugs and call it a night.
It is such a treat a hop skip and jump from LA.
We have gone every year for the past 6 years, and it never fails to be great....
Just make sure you book an OCEAN FRONT room... otherwise, it's just another hotel.

Best Western looks okay from the outside. But judging on its location, its probably the best hotel in the viscinity.
For the one year, I took my gf here on a Hearst Castle Package which includes two nights in the Kings Row (we stayed on the 2nd floor):
- balcony with direct ocean view (only if it wasnt so foggy) -
- wood burning fireplace
- semi decent bar
- king bed
- two tickets to hearst castle along with National Geographic movie tickets
- cheap 4 dollar champagne
- $50 food voucher (great for room service).
Expect to pay a grip of dough but it was well worth it. As long as she had fun, then I had fun.
Within driving range to Hearst Castle and the small town of Cambria which we dined for two nights at seperate establishments at The Black Cat and The Sow's Ear.
I will definitely come back!

Clean. Updated and well-kept, other than the CRT television. Has a DVD player hooked to the TV, but the audio through the TV is weak. They have DVDs available at the desk.
Great view of the beach and ocean. Access to the beach. Surfers and kiteboarders were active right off the beach. Three nice fire pits on the property with chairs. They light them up just before sundown. Whoever laid the fire did a very good job. I really enjoyed that.
Free WiFi and hard-wired internet access in the room. A computer with internet access is available in the lobby. Refrig/mini-bar and mini-pantry in the room. Safe in the room. Convenience store is across Highway 1.
I'd go back.
We stayed here midweek average room right above the lobby paid $97 includes tax w/ AAA disc.
It is clean and somewhat comfortable mattresses.
They have 3 bonfires out near the beach between 7-10pm. However we made it down around 8 and all the chiars they set out were taken.
They have a resturant next door to them so they don't offer free breakfast.

This was about 6 years ago, but my wife and I had a great experience with the hotel. They upgraded us to a King's Row room even though it was mistake of my own. I had booked an ocean view room thinking that it was the bluff side King's Row rooms. When we got to the hotel, we were given the room that was ocean-peek. I explained that I booked the wrong type of room and they still accommodated us and put us in a King's Row room - and they didn't even charge us for the upgrade. The King's Row ocean bluff rooms have patios and fireplaces. We never checked out the pool since it was April and rather chilly. I can't imagine that you would want to stay in any other section of the hotel.
Although the hotel is modest, the views, the sound of the surf and the setting is pretty awesome. Who needs a Four Seasons, when you are sitting right on the bluff overlooking the ocean with your dog chilling next to you and a glass of wine from Paso Robles which is just a short drive away. Great place to stay if you plan to do some driving around the coast and Paso Robles wine tasting.
Although dog-friendly it didn't smell like a wet musty dog, which is what we were afraid of. We will definitely bring our dog next time.
There is really good surf right below (1 minute walk from the room). Bring your board and watch out for the elephant seals.

The only place to stay in San Simeon is the Best Western. If you can afford the King's Row, request that area. This wing of the hotel has the view of the ocean, beach access, pool access, and access to the nightly fires. My husband and I stayed for 2 nights, we could walk down to the beach and pick up rocks, or go the the spa. Each night we stayed the hotel staff light 3 fire pits for people to sit and watch the sunset. We decided to enjoy our very own fireplace in our room. The beds were comfortable, if you like a firm pillow I would bring your own. The shower and tub area was clean and well maintained. The noise from our neighbors was minimal, just the sound of the crashing waves.
This is my favorite place to stay when I'm in the Cambria/San Simeon area. Get a room on King's Row and you'll have a beautiful view of the ocean, the bluffs/beach are a short walk from your patio, and your own fireplace in your room to keep you warm. They also have outdoor fireplaces along the bluffs which make for a great night of just relaxing, listening to the waves break on the beach, and if the time is right you can enjoy the moonlight shimmering off of the water.
This area is a very much underrated weekend getaway spot for those living in the SF Bay Area and this hotel makes my stays down here that much more enjoyable.

The staff was kind, bonfires were available, and the pool was well heated. I can't ask for much more from a place.
Just don't eat at the attached restaurant (unless you enjoy being ignored). I can't really hold this against the hotel staff though since it is run by different people.
All I can say is wow. $200 per night for Best Western seemed expensive but it was well worth it. If you are visiting the Hearst Castle, make sure to stay here. I had the room with ocean view, king size bed, and a fireplace. If you are a pet owner, you'll love this place. This place is dog friendly! They didn't charge me extra for my dog and there are no size limitation. There are plenty of areas where you can take your dog for poop or pee. Also, there are trash cans and free doggie poop bags available to clean up after your dog. Room was clean but lamps on bed stands was weird. We couldn't find a way to turn the damn thing off?!?!?! After playing with them for awhile, it flickered off on its own. Hmmm... I wouldn't recommend the restaurant on the premise, food was not that great. It's perfectly okay for breakfast but for lunch and dinner, try the restaurants in Cambria (little south of San Simeon).
I was really impressed by this place. For being a Best Western it had charm, it was very clean and had excellent beach access. Our room was good sized and was within ear shot of the breaking waves. The hotel staff is very helpful at suggesting places to eat and things to see and do.
Be sure to sit by one of the chimney fireplace things above the beach. The hotel will light them up for you and they provide the chairs. I'm sure their pool is nice during warm weather. If you can, get an ocean view room since it's so close to the ocean. But if you don't get one, you're still very close so don't sweat it.
The hotel has its own restaurant. I didn't eat there but there were a lot of people in there for most of the day and evening. The menu looks like it has some good dishes on it.
I will definitely stay here the next time I'm in the area.

A decent Best Western Inn. The grounds were beautiful only because it was next to the beach. I suppose it would be normal if it were any other place. The fire pits were a good place to chill with others and share info on good places/eats/wine. I had the prime rib at the restaurant (Splurge!), which turned out pretty good. I guess you can't go wrong with beef in the middle of cow country.
The town of San Simeon is very small. There's a liquor mart on one end town, but if you want to get to a market, you'd have to drive to nearby Cambria.

I made a reservation at this hotel strictly based on the good reviews here and I was not disappointed. For a Best Western, this place was top notch. It's right on the beach, the rooms have fireplaces, the bed is big and comfy, and they have all the amenties you could ever need. Perfect for a night on our visit to Hearst Castle.
Also, my boyfriend tells me they have excellent internet access (wired and wireless). He says nerds will appreciate this (he is a nerd, btw).

Add my wife and I to those who feel the Cavalier is the place to stay when in the San Simeon/Cambria area...the staff and facilities are something special...and they are pet friendly
all that is special has already been mentioned...we agree and will be back
I'm reviewing Restaurant, not the hotel itself.
Was stopping by for some breakfast, and we had:
- french toast (made with croissant, b/c they ran out of french toast bread)
- omellete
We were reco'd here from the place across the street, and wish we'd had eaten somewhere else - maybe even fast food, and saved a couple bucks and had less grease.
Both were not impressive -- and the french toast was runny and gooey from not being cooked enough. Plus, the idea of a croissant french toast sounds okay, until you eat it and then realize it's all grease, and the frying in egg batter has destroyed the fluffy delight of a buttery croissant, leaving you only with grease.
Not impressed -- and the views from the grounds were nice, especially for a Best Western, but it could have been so much nicer!
This place was a lot more pricey than I'm used to BUT it was for a getaway for my boyfriend and I AND it ended up being more than worth it! We signed up for the Hearst Castle package, which included two nights in a King suite (a nice building separate from the main hotel), tickets to Hearst Castle and a room service credit.
I was thoroughly impressed with the hotel. Our suite was huge and comfortable...I usually have trouble sleeping in hotel beds but this one was amazing. And the view from our balcony looked out over the large free space behind the main hotel and the beach below. What I especially enjoyed about the hotel is that it was obvious that everyone else loved the place too -- at dusk every single back patio or porch on the main hotel had people sitting on it watching the sunset. I also enjoyed the large dog population running around. Right before we left there was a small pod of dolphins swimming very close to the beach right below the hotel. Definitely an amazing place.

Had a great stay here last year on vacation. The whole family loved it, even our dog. It was so nice to hear the ocean at night and to take a walk on the beach. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We got there late and ended up ordering room service. We went for a walk before the food got there and saw people starting fires in the firepits between the hotel and the beach. It always seems like people with dogs are the friendliest people. That night after we ate, the kids watched TV and fell asleep. Then we had some coctails from the mini bar and wished we had gotten an ocean view room. The next morning we took a walk on the beach and then headed home. No complaints at all.

Wonderful hotel, right on the beach! Good prices and nice staff. It was fantastic to fall asleep to oceanwaves. A great place to stay if you're going to visit Hearst Castle, or if you're driving along the ocean to/from LA.

This is a good base for a Hearst Castle visit. The room was nice, by Best Western standards, and had a good range of amenities including minibar and DVD player. This place is right on the beach, and they have fire pits which they light at night for guests. The staff is very friendly. The attached restaurant may be the best restaurant in San Simeon, which isn't saying much, but has decent food and reasonable prices for a hotel restaurant.

There are several different buildings -- one close enough to the beach the waves seem only feet away, one that's facing the beach but set back across a lawn, and two that are perpendicular to the beach and set further back. We stayed in a room on the lawn. The room was large and comfortable with a small fireplace and a patio and chairs to sit and watch the sunset / waves. There are three wood fires / chairs clustered on the lawn if you want to sit and watch the waves and chat. The only down side -- the beds were a bit hard. BTW, the beach here is very rocky, no sand, and very narrow.

Some places are more about function than flash (umm, see http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Some places confuse location with excellence (umm, see http://www.yelp.com/bi...). An exemplary facility starts with the luck of excellent location and strives to maximize it with excellent customer service. That's exactly what you get here - a gorgeous oceanfront location coupled with visible effort by the staff and management to provide the best service possible. During our stay even the smallest query was responded to knowledgeably and enthusiastically. There were apples in the lobby, bonfires on the bluff overlooking the beach nightly, and games and DVDs for loan (board games, not video games, ya jackasses!) A top notch family destination and a relative bargain. 5 stars.

Oh man this place is awesome. You absolutely have to reserve the ocean view room or it's not worth it. The room itself is pretty cozy, fireplace, we bar, TV and all that. The best part is the access and the view of the ocean. It's located right on the water that you can smell it the minute you open your back door. Oh and you can bring pets along. Definitely bring a camera to capture the sunrise and sunset. It's a must.

I was so surprised by this Best Western! I stayed here in November with my husband and it was PERFECT. We had a 2nd floor room with a fireplace and ocean view, and it was so peaceful and great. The room was nice and we kept the balcony door open to hear the ocean all evening. It's right on the ocean with a small grassy area before the cliffs and you can sit out there in front of their fire pits to enjoy the view at night. I ate my breakfast out there and besides some pushy birds, it was really lovely. I'm definitely going back sometime!

Do you love your dog? How much? If you really love your dog and you are looking for a place to take him/her for an ultra relaxing, beautiful, romantic (if you dont mind a canine audience), and clean get-away, you really can't beat this Best Western. It is super dog friendly. They even leave a dog beach towel in the room for you. The rooms are updated, clean, cozy and the place is tranquil, even with dogs running around. We come up here to get away from San Diego and hit the wineries. It is our favorite place to go for a long weekend and we have never been dissappointed.

This place is SPECTACULAR!! We went here for an anniversary, and it has been a great experience. I loved that we were able to bring our dogs, and with the beach as our "backyard", it was great to wake up to the ocean and the bright sun. It was a sweet place to watch the sunset with my hubby and spend the morning walking the dogs. The fireplace and lush beds made it a super cozy place to stay. I hope to come here again some day soon.....
Was recommended by a friend and well worth the money. Setting is peaceful and a great escape from suburbia and the urban grind. Fire place in the room, fridge, big comfy bed, and large two person bathtub. The resort also has group fire places yards from the beach for sunset fires. Pool could have been warmer but still very pleasant. One can be calmed to sleep by the sound of the pounding surf.
