For "downtown" Carnel, this Best Western is probably one of the best "deals" you can get in housing.

Got a king sized bed in a very nicely decorated (in dark brown and tan faux wood and marble tones) and very MASCULINE room located over the office for only $100.  The motel is only a couple of blocks of of Ocean (the main drag), is close to lots of art galleries and restaurants, and actually has a parking lot, which is very rare in Carmel.

The room was a little noisier that I would have preferred because of plumbing noise and TV/voices from the office area, but it wasn't all THAT bad.  It's only shares one wall (the bathroom wall) w/another room and if you want it ask for Room #217.

It's FAR better than paying $200 or more for the same. So, add in free DSL Net access and a free continental breakfast (which is meager -- better to eat out, but it's there is you want it), it's a "steal" for a stay in Carmel.

Check it out!

I thought this place was PERFECT!!!

For a weekend girls get away, we decided to rent a King Suite at the Best Western.  It was amazingly a hop, jump, and skip away from where we were having dinner so it worked out fine. And we only needed a place to sleep and get ready so we weren't looking for anything extravagant!

The place is a little run down on the outside.  I think we paid $ 177.00/night total.  Split that 4 ways and cha-ching.....money in my pocket to go shopping!!!  I could only hope the room wasn't too shabby!  I was the first to arrive since the other girls got lost..haha!!  oh well...I guess I can take the time to relax and check the place out!!

The king suite was located at the bottom of the stairs, closely situated within view of the pool, which looked amazing!  Our room window opened up to the pool area and in the evening, had a great breeze coming thru it!  The room was a tad bit on the small size for a suite but slept two comfortably on the huge feathery king, and in the adjoining room, the pull out sofa slept two quite "snugly"!!  :0)  Sorry girls...first come gets first bids!!!  hehe....

I loved how comfortable the bed was....ahh....now this I could take home!  The bathroom was extremely small, and the walls were super thin, but the suite took up the entire bottom  floor so we knew we wouldn't keep anyone up with our laughing and giggling into all hours of the night.

Considering this room is walking distance to just about anything, it's an awesome savings!  You can also park in their lot and walk over to all the cute boutiques!!  A definitely nice place for a cheap price!

I would have given them 5 stars with the front desk being so darn hospitable, however my only gripe...the "maid service" was cleaning in front of the door when I got there as I lugged my suitcase past them.  The next morning...you could hear them vacuuming, and cleaning right aside our door all over again!!  WTF?????  It was way too early and being that their are only 2 rooms in our area, there was no need for them to even be right outside our door!!  They could have started with the rest of the rooms upstairs!

Oh one more good thing,...free breakfast if you don't want to walk over to one of the cafes,...not a bad selection to choose from....

Great location in Carmel.  Probably one of the less pricey hotels in this area.  This place is simple...rooms are clean.  They have a sun deck and a pool but it's a bit cold this time of year to enjoy it.

Within walking distance to almost everything!  Plus there's free parking so it beats the 90 minute limit that most of the streets have.  Why is it 90 minutes anyway???  What not 2 hours!!!

So, let's talk Vacation While Single.  Normally I'm the kind of person who would stay in a B&B for the slightly higher-end accommodations or just to have access to a big tub (ahem).  But when you're not traveling with anyone, do you really need to pay $300 a night just for a place to sleep by yourself?  Not really, no.  So I reverted to looking for a basic hotel this trip and wound up here for $110 a night (AAA rate).  Given that this is Carmel, I think I got what I paid for.

And now the good points and bad points of this hotel:

GOOD:
* The hotel is two blocks from Ocean Avenue.  Perfect for shopping half of it, wearing yourself out, running back to your room to rest a bit, then going back out for more.

* Free Internet.  The Internet is necessary for researching places to go, such as restaurants and shopping areas.  Yay, Internet!

BAD:
* It's kind of rundown outside, and the insides were nothing special and smelled a little funky.  I opened the windows and dug out the fan they'd left in the closet, because there is no A/C (good thing it wasn't hot) and the smell cleared out after awhile.

* The bathroom had NO TUB, just a shower stall.  At least the shower stall was tiled, not plastic, but it's one of those odd ones where the corner is cut off.  if you weigh more than 300 pounds you will not fit in this shower.

* The "free Internet" was a single wireless router in the lobby that wouldn't reach my room, and a miswired DSL modem that wouldn't give me an IP address.  The desk clerk was no help with this.  Eventually I realized that I needed to connect the phone line to the "VDSL" port instead of the "Phone Line" port where they'd left it and all was well.  Well, all was well thanks to the extra-long Ethernet cable I always travel with (am dork).

* The walls were nice and thin -- I was woken up several times the first night by someone's baby crying.  The charitable part of me thought "Aw, poor kid, he probably isn't used to sleeping away from home," while the less charitable, woken-up-at-6-AM part of me thought "OK, vacation in a cheap hotel is not the place to try the 'cry it out' school of sleep scheduling."  I was having flashbacks to my first apartment the whole time, with the thumping, the doors slamming, and the kids yelling.  Luckily no loud sexing.

* Standard hard hotel bed with standard hotel sheets.  Sure, you get used to this while you're there, but wow, it was nice to crawl into my own bed when I got home.  Thread count, man!

Anyway, this is what I get for being cheap yet having expensive tastes.  Would I stay here again?  Probably not with another person I was trying to impress.  As a bed to sleep in, it served its purpose, but I've definitely stayed in nicer hotels.
