11 reviews for Best Way Supermarket
It's really rather small, and I've seen much better produce, but prices are competitive, lines are short and it's conveniently located.
For picking up a couple of things, going here is a lot more satisfying than dealing with the hordes of people at the nearby Giants.
I agree with other reviewers, this place is awesome. I don't think it could replace your typical grocery, but I always enjoy walking through the aisles and exploring what they have.
The produce is generally very cheap. 30 cents for a bell pepper, 10 cents for lemons and limes, 60 cents for avacados.
There is a large seafood section in the back with around 15 varieties of whole fish on ice. They will clean the fish for you on request.
They have an enormous selection of Latin American products: spices, beans, salsas, cheeses, tortillas, etc.
Considering I live across the street, I stop by several times a week after work. I am a little concerned about the ground beef for $0.99/lb.(Safeway sells theirs for $3.99/lb), but I buy it nonetheless. I am on a budget, what an I say.
I searched for this place because I was craving for Colombian Arepas and needed to get the cornmeal for the Arepas. It was amazing to find that they had exactly what I was looking for! It was also nice to find a Latin Place in DC where I could go to get this kind stuff without to going all the way out to Maryland or Virginia. However, as I looked for more items that I really miss from home, I found that they do not have as much South American products as I would have wanted. Perhaps I am spoiled by Miami's supermarkets where you can get a wide variety of Latin American products even in Publix (the Floridian Giant). However, they do have lots of products from Central America. I am definitely going there more often to explore what else they have. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised as I find new products.
Good, cheap produce. Perfect avocados. I suggest staying away from the beef or dairy products. The milk isn't kept very cold, and the one time I tried the "fajita meat" it was extremely tough and disgusting. I think it was the lowest grade of meat I have ever encountered.
I use Adobo seasoning in varying amounts on almost everything I cook. My mom (from PR) used it growing up, and I've only known the red capped Adobo. Bestway has EIGHT varieties of Goya brand Adobo. The traditional mixture is garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, oregano and salt, but obviously there are variations that I don't know about! I can't wait to try all the colors.
Bestway is good if you live in the neighborhood and you need the basics (milk, eggs, bread, pasta, etc.) But I don't do my main shopping here -- that is done at either Giant or Safeway. The prices here are decent for a smaller supermarket and there is never a long line. This is definitely for the neighborhood only, they aren't catering to the larger D.C. population.
Safeway it ain't. This place, subtitled "Mundo Latino" is a unique and charming grocery on Mount Pleasant street, where you can stock up on Hierba Mate (only 1.29 for a pound), Dona Lola Red Beans (1.59 per bag), Gallina Ice Fowl, and something called "Pork Picnics" (on special for 1.09 a pound).
There is always cheerful latino music playing inside, and the friendly staff will be glad to help you locate the specials---whether it be Wesson Corn oil or Adolphus Rice (20 lbs for only $7.99). They take a lot of pride in the store, as evinced by the string of Central and South American Flags adorning the ceiling.
Say yes to multiculturalism: switch from Safeway to Bestway.
I am lucky enough to live a half block from this market. For a place with 7 aisles, it's got just about everything you need. Cheap meat, fresh fish, a decent produce selection, tons of handmade tortillas, beer (including Bud minis), wine (lots of Malbecs). They have lots of latin and asian specialty products, which thrills me as a latinophile. When I was craving empanadas, they had frozen dough discos. When I was craving fried yuca, they had the tuber. When I was craving pig's feet.... ok well I've never craved pig trotters, but for the record, they have them.
They have a pretty decent selection of spices, cereals, even some organic foods. They are my savior during the summer thanks to their CHEAP CHEAP chicken wings and drumsticks -- perfect for BBQing. If you're making some fancy recipe, they probably won't have everything you need, I do stop by Whole Foods/TJs from time to time to fill in the blanks. The Service is always friendly and quick. No wonder people pilgrimage to Bestway from the suburbs, stealing my parking spots.
I love Bestway. Partly because I live right across the street and have been known to make several trips in one day, sometimes running over right in the middle of cooking. At first I thought it would be a local store to pick up the basics in a pinch, but slowly I realized you can get just about anything here (save for your organic soy yogurt, but how much of that do you really want?). And the music! Nothing like shopping to some great bachata. Bestway especially wins me over in comparison to the ridiculous lines that never cease at Safeway. Keep it local!
Okay, I will admit that I was a little scared of the Bestway when I first moved into Mt. Pleasant. But I have become a convert, especially for the fresh seafood. Need a cheap dinner idea? Head for the tilapia--you can get a giant filet for $1.50. They have lot of other stuff, too--mussels, clams, and whole fish that they'll butcher for you. And it's all surprisingly fresh--better than what you'd get at the Giant, believe it or not. And to repeat other reviewers' comments, they have lots of specialty produce and staples--mostly latin, but some asian stuff too. At times the produce smells like it's been sitting out too long, but overall it's a cool, funky little store where you can get most of what you need. Parking can be an issue, so walk if you're able to.
Awesome! The Freshest and cheapest produce in town. I just love the place...it is true that I only buy produce there, but I love how they keep their prices low while still giving you the freshest fruits and vegetables. Occasionaly I buy juices and other items, but you can never go wrong with the produce. If they are out of something, ask them, they will bring it from the back. Keep up the good work.
