oh hell yes.
sleazy owner, but who cares. so good and so cheap and you can bring your own beer.
better than any tacos I've had in Ensenada
2.5 Stars
So, apparently I'm one of the only people in LA who's not a fan but whatever, here I go...little goldfish swimming upstream.
Price: Awesome - who doesn't like $1.50 for a fish taco and $2.00 for a shrimp taco.
Tacos:
I got 1 shrimp and 1 fish taco and found them to be meh. The fish taco tasted mainly of oil and batter and the shrimp taco was really heavy on the batter too. I did think the salsa bar was neat but here's where the real problem hit. I'd tried a couple salsas and before I'd even finished eating I felt an unpleasant indigestion burn as the salsa hit my stomach. This was the kind of exploratory tingling that suggests that you are going to be in for a rough afternoon.
Oh and lest you think I can't take the spicy, I'd like to point out that I grew up in Indonesia. You want hot chiles? There's a reason we're on the ring o' fire and it's not just the volcanoes.
Service and Atmosphere: Ordering on this particular day did not happen efficiently. People were not being served in the order they came. It was hard to get anyone's attention. Once you ordered, however, the food came out pronto. Also, the place is vaguely dirty and looks like it could use a go-over from our friends, clorox and lysol.
When we walked in my friend and I immediately giggled, followed by the woman behind the counter smiling and saying, "You laughing at my menu?"
And yes, we were. In the best way possible. Because there are three things to order:
Fish Taco $1.50
Shrimp Taco $2
Drink $1
Easy enough! So I got one of each. The tacos are served up quickly and there is a salsa bar so that you can choose what you'd like. Their salsas are all amazing, (I recommend the guacamole salsa).
They've got plenty of seating outside and inside. The women who were working were fun and friendly, aside from grandma who didn't look up from her knitting the whole time we were there.
Every time I've gone parking has been rather easy.
My only complaint is that the place isn't open past 8PM or something like that. I just want more, more, more.
Well, I've never eaten a fish taco in Ensenada - but it seems they've earned the title accordingly, and definitely have my vote.
Cheap fish tacos that are quickly made, and 100% delicious.
Great salsa bar that is fresh, spicy, and full of selection.
Buy a beer at the corner mart, come here, and have the best seven dollar meal of your life (including beer)...
Recently, I started reading up on investing. It seemed to be the right time as it's never too early to start thinking about the future--besides, I wanted to make some money on the side for my upcoming France trip. I checked out a variety of books, from the conservative books to the get-rich-quick scheme books. One thing they all have in common though is they stressed diversifying your portfolio. It's never prudent to have all your eggs in one basket--in case something goes wrong.
This applies to the food world as well, which is probably why most restaurants offer a myriad of choices to satisfy each patron. Not so at Best Fish Taco of Ensenada, where they serve a grand total of 2 items (not including drinks): fish tacos for $1.50 each and shrimp tacos for $2.00 each.
My friends and I made the trek from the new location of Umami Burger because I had read about BFToE from Food GPS (my little black book & bible) a while back. I wanted to see what the fuss was about, so I ordered their namesake.
Like a well-oiled machine, the operation at BFToE is simple and efficient. After I placed my order with the cashier, two motherly ladies began their synchronized dance. One brought out a big metal bowl of battered fish and carefully placed individual strips in hot oil. While the fish is frying, the other cook grilled tortillas in a nearby griddle, taking care to give each side enough time to crispin and brown to perfection.
In just a short while, the first cook fished out the finished strips and let the pieces drain while the tortilla cook passed along the ready tortillas. In goes the fish and the piping hot taco is then transferred into my hands, all within a few minutes.
Next comes the fun part. Just three steps over, there is the fixings bar where you can mix and match salsas, gauc, shredded cabbage, and creama to create your desired taco. My winning formula is to pile on the cabbage, then add just a tiny bit of the Pineapple Kiss (Hot hot hot salsa enhanced by pineapples).
Newcomers, not to worry--there are little note cards with snappy descriptions. Or, try the hands-on approach and try a little of each topping beforehand.
It's hard to describe the finished product without being cliche but the experience of biting into the taco is like a big, happening party in my mouth. There's the hot, fresh-tasting fish in its delicate seasoned coating, the cooling cabbage, the spicy and sweet salsa and the charred corn tortilla--it doesn't get any better than this.
Although I was getting full (no kidding since I had a burger just right before), I was curious and wanted to try their shrimp taco to round out my experience.
It was a happy coincidence the owner of BFToE started working the cashier station just then. A gregarious and friendly guy, he told us about his family's horchata recipe while refilling my friend's empty cup as my friend commented on the unexpected roasted taste. The reason why his version differs from the normally mild milky brew is that he uses Morro seeds instead of rice, which is common in his hometown.
When it was my turn, I gushed about how much I loved the fish taco and is ready to order another one, to which he generously made me one on the house(!). The shrimp taco employs plump, briny shrimps and are fried in the similar manner as the fish. Personally, I prefer the more delicate, clean taste of the fish taco, but the shrimp is equally stellar and some of my friends prefer it over the fish.
From the looks of the steady stream of customers coming in at odd hours, maybe there's something about riding on one winner. Why dilute your profits when you have a sure thing? Too bad it's a drive for me to BFToE, if I live in Los Feliz, I would go there everyday. Hmm, so maybe it's a good thing that I live a ways away.
I drove north from SD and somehow ended up in Ensenada! Seeing that I stumbled upon the best fish taco place, I had to try it even though I just stuffed my belly with a big juicy hamburger 15 minutes before! I paid a buck-fifty for the taco and a buck straight for some fresh horchata, no tax! With those prices I must really be in Mexico, right?
After paying, the lady dipped the fish in the batter and fried it right before my eyes. A few minutes later, I was handed a fresh fish taco - just a corn tortilla and the strip of fish. I walked over to the salsa bar and smothered the taco with some shredded cabbage, HOT mango salsa, HOT guacamole, and topped it with some orgasmic cream! YUM!!! You'll want to consume your taco right away and there's lots of indoor and patio seating perfect for that. I would've bought another after finishing the first one if I wasn't already full when I entered the place!
I was finally reminded that I was in LA when I saw the art for sale on the walls and the friendly Caucasian owner who seemed to really appreciate the business. Next time I want the best fish tacos, I'll remember that I only have to drive north 2 hours from SD to get the best from Ensenada!
I think about radish relish all day. Infact Radish Relish reminds me of my boyfriend: it totally weirded me out at first but then i fell in LOVE. Bright pink, tangy, right next to the "magic" sauce in a box (also love) that requires you to actively pump it out. If you want the magic sauce you gotta work for it! For all i know whatever is under that box--a tube maybe leading to a dumpster or some homeless mans crotch--for the love of the magic sauce i don't ask questions i just pump!
I dont eat shrimp-- it's disgusts me. But i heard it's better than the fish taco. The salsa bar is muy caliente and since i'm a pussy (as some trick recently described me) i stick to the radish relish, magic sauce, cabbage, and mild stuff.
This is a great place to meet up with friends for dinner on a sunday. And if you have time to kill afterward or before.. check out the liqour store 50 feet up the block. It's super fancy.
oh! The taco place is CASH ONLY! dont forget.
I took my friend here with me the other day. Joseph is so nice he let us in even though they were already closed and locking up the gate. He even hooked us up with the extra fish, because we were the last ones there. 6 different salsas and one magic creme. I believe the magic creme is something like sour cream. Yummmmmy
$1.50 for fish and $2.00 for shrimp
As much salsa as you want !

I'll keep this review simple just like their menu (they only have 3 items).
1. Their fish tacos are delicious! They have a nice little "sides" bar that you can use to dress up your tacos to make them more even delicious.
2. It's worth the time to check it out for a nice lunch...and, you can eat like a king if you have $5 on ya. Parking is a little tricky, but it's LA.
3. Regardless if you're on tight budget or if you're making some big bucks, the 'BFTIE' is a lovely little food joint, and deserves frequent visits.
Upscale takes on the fish taco abound, but this is an excellent taco stand version. Generous portions of fried fish (or shrimp - your only choices) are placed in a single corn tortilla and sold for $1.50 (or $2 for shrimp). Then you wander over to the salsa bar to dress them up. There are quite a few variations at the salsa bar, so choose wisely - you could create a masterpiece or a disaster here, and it's on you either way.
The fish is battered and fried right before your eyes and the flavor is spot on. It's only by your second fish taco you realize the texture of the fish itself is a little less than perfect. It's a bit mushy in the way fish that has been frozen gets. The more sensitive you are to texture the more of a downer this will be, buy hey, it's not like there's a local community of fishermen supplying the place with the day's catch. And at these prices how can you complain?
The bottom line is cheap deliciousness that nearly captures the fish tacos you remember from vacationing in Mexico. Extra points for the two charming white haired women behind the counter.
Walking in, I'm greeted with a sign hanging from the ceiling... it's their menu and it only has 3 items.
1. Fish Tacos
2. Shrimp Tacos
3. Drink
How awesome!!! Yet somehow i'm still standing there pondering what to get... do i want 2 fish and 1 shrimp, or 1 fish and 2 shrimp, the internal debate wages on.
Then after getting your delicious treats, you make your way to the salsa bar!! It's stocked with all these great goodies... spicy guac, mango salsa (lots of different salsa but i dig this one), cabbage and crema (mexican sour cream, the authentic stuff).
One bite and i'm in fish taco heaven!!! Seriously, the hardest part about coming to this place is deciding how many of each i can eat, and which one is better...
The shrimp and fish tacos are good and inexpensive. It's easy to order since you only have the 2 choices.
I really like the different choice of salsas. I recommend the mango salsa.
I tried this little hot spot a week ago with my coworker. I love that they have such a simple menu. Fish taco, shrimp taco, drink. That's it. The line moves quick and there is variety of salsas to choose from.
Try and avoid the lunch hour, cuz you'll be waiting a while. Even though the line moves fast, the rate at which the food comes out is constant.
Not only are these the "best fish tacos in Ensenada", but they're seriously the best fish tacos in the Ensentire Unada States!!" Wow, that was an EPIC fail...
Being from LA, it's hard not to love Mexican food and/or tacos, and there are a million hole-in-the-wall places that you could fall in love with in this city. But for fish and shrimp tacos, this place takes the cake...or the batter (haha, pun intended...EPIC fail #2). Normally, fish tacos taste a little strange to me--not sure if it's the batter or the fish, but I've had many funny tasting fish tacos--even at really good Mexican places.
I went for the first time last week, but I do have to rave that the freshly fried fishies (no, really, they fry it in a big vat of oil right in front of you--god, I wanna put a turkey in that mofo) are amazing here. The batter is simply superb. And they're only $1.50 each!!! There are also delish shrimp tacos for $2.00 each. Actually, sometimes the tacos are even FREE if the owner happens to be there and happens to like you (he seems like a really great guy!!). You get them plain on a tortilla and then you have the option to add the shredded cabbage; the pineapple kiss, mad mango, or guac salsa or whatever floats your boat (they're all yummy and spicy); and the magic cream sauce. DON'T FORGET the magic cream sauce! I honestly can't remember if it's actually called "magic" cream sauce or I made that up...I give EVERYTHING nicknames. Sorry. Oh, and don't forget to try the $1.00 horchata. It's made with moro so it doesn't taste like the typical Mexican horchata you've had everywhere else. It's more nutty and apparently the Guatemalan style of horchata. I very much would like to drunk eat here sometime, but whether you're pissed drunk or not, this place stands the test of taste!!!
Fried Fish Tacos....YUM!!!
After waking up too late for breakfast, we decided to get some fish tacos. My friend told me about this cool little fish taco spot next to los feliz, so we decided to go and try it out.
There is not much to the menu, and not much to the restaurant...just a counter, their kitchen area, deep fryers, and a few paintings on of downtown on the walls...the place is pretty small, has a small outside patio and a couple tables inside.
I ended up ordering 2 fish, and 2 shrimp...$1.50 for each fish, and $2 for each shrimp. I thought that it was really cool that they battered and fried their shrimp and fish right there in front of you!!
They make good batter, and the tacos come out hot crispy and plain...just fried fish or shrimp wrapped on a grilled tortilla. They have a salsa bar where you can add as little or much produce, salsas, and sauces that you want.
I am usually a fish over shrimp type of person...and, the fish taco was really good....but in this case, the shrimp prevailed...I must say that the shrimp taco was delicious!...
I'm quite fortunate to have found the "best fish taco in ensenada"...I am definately going back to Ensenada soon....
I finally found my favorite fish taco!!hell ya!They only have two things on the menu...Fish or Shrimp....i prefer the fish...but you must try both..great for a quick bite... finding parking might take longer....enjoy!
Tastes just like the fish/shrimp tacos you or your mom or your mexican aunt can make at home, same batter, flavor and home made feel, which is a good thing for those times when I'm too lazy to make them myself, except for the salsas their salsas are pretty weak, and their horchata was weird, and I don't like it when everyone there stops eating to stare at me, and the parking sucks too.
so on second thought I think I just might be better off getting my lazy ass to make the effort of making them myself.
Good tacos though I think I should get to making some right now.
We discovered this place quite by accident. We had to park a few blocks away when going to a bar and wanted to eat a little something before meeting our friends for drinks.
We had fish tacos and shrimp tacos. The perfect choice at a reasonable price. I love the home style cooking, too.
This place just makes me HAPPY!!!
The best deal in town for the freshest fish tacos in LA, the friendliest owner, a great random mix of peeps for people watching.
LOVE this place!!!
If you don't like these fish tacos, you have no clue what a fish taco is supposed to be like!
ENJOY!

I had been craving fish tacos for the past week and this place sure hit the spot. I would say the shrimp tacos are better.
The best part is that the tacos are cheap!!!\
Only thing to remember is, DONT EAT inside because you will smell like taco grease.
Huzzah! AMAZING fish tacos. Fried to order and wonderfully seasoned. These just melt in your mouth. (NOTE: people who like their fish tacos to have crunchy fish in it will not like!)
Shrimp is slightly sweeter bringing out the flavors in the batter more intensely. Totally worth the extra 50 cents!
You will get a warmed tortilla with your chosen fish or shrimp on it, then walk to the salsa bar, top with cabbage and your choice of 4-6 fresh salsas. Top it off with la crema magika and you have yourself some delicious tacos to love!
Best part of it? Even though they are fried, the tacos do not leave that nasty fried oil taste that is left in your mouth after tater tots or hash browns! No sirree! no need for sodas to wash down a greasy feeling either. . . don't know how you do it. . . I just know I'm in lovveeeee....
I will def be driving from across town for these more often.
Not sure but I think it is street parking only.
Very friendly owner and the tacos aren't bad, but the fish batter could use some flavor/spices. Señor Fish downtown still reigns supreme for me.
Pretty cheap and pretty decent as well. The fish can be fried a little more for that extra crunch sometimes but other than that I give it a 7/10. The salsa bar is delicious with I believe 5 choices? from mild to really spicy. A good place for a quick bite!
Why go to Ensenada, when someone's brought Ensenada home to you?
A friend of mine who lives in Los Feliz (I'll call him Will--cuz that's his name) brought me here on a Saturday afternoon, and just like the fish we were about to eat, I was instantly HOOKED.
Forget about places like Wahoo's or Baja Fresh trying to sell "baja style fish tacos"--this place has it nailed. Can't confirm this, but rumor has it the guy that runs this place loved baja fish tacos so much, he arranged greencards for the women at his favorite fish taco stand in Ensenada to come to the US, and work at this place. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if this story was true, because they have definitely captured the flavor of the mexican fish taco street carts and imported it to LA.
As others have mentioned, the menu is SUPER simple, and a "Baja In & Out" is probably an accurate description, w/just three things on the menu: $1.50 fish tacos, $2 Shrimp tacos, and $1 drinks (sodas, horchata, etc).
The tacos are complemented with a huge salsa bar that puts places like "La Salsa" to shame, from thick and chunky, avacado, mango, pico de gallo, i could go on and on, they probably had almost a dozen options.
The outside seating is great too--a great place to people watch, and also to bring your dog, if you're going on an afternoon stroll.
It takes me A LOT to leave the westside--and this place is one of the few that gives me an excuse. So simple, so tasty, soooooo good!
Brain mush from day at work. Daikokuya, yes! Oh - no - a wait list with ten parties ahead. What's this, a well-recommended fish taco place? Grumble, OK.
Ah, a menu as easy as 1, 2, 3. But wait, both shrimp and fish sound so good, what to do? Oh, the indecision. Behind the counter, a voice of reason: "Get both, and then once you are done get another, that way it's fresh and you can order the one you want more of."
A Reed's ginger brew holds me over. They arrive quickly, casual and unassuming, like the patron who just walked in wearing sweats. I dress them up with cabbage (oh, this is starting to look good), and hot, yes hot - mango, certainly. A Guacamole-esque sauce, too? Done. Now to ea-no no, wait - fresh crema, yes. For the price, no doubt, top notch.
Perfectly fried with salty bite, covered in sauces. Somehow they stay good, even as some of the sauce is absorbed. Fish is delicate and tender, shrimp just the right amount of chewy. It's not soggy, it's just absorbing it's surroundings. It falls apart some, that's OK, pick it up with your hands, lick your fingers, it's allowed, encouraged! A shrimp falls out - ahh, meant to be savored in it's own bite, clearly. Back up for another, and, and a tamarind drink (not too sweet, and tart), and a hibiscus drink (ahh, light to quench the thirst), and one last taco. Ahh, stuffed.
So my friend would not shut up about these fish tacos, so after the 3,009th RAVE about it, she finally took me here and uhhh... GOLD MINE!! 3 things: Fresh, Simple, Recession Friendly.
$1.50 Fish Taco, $2 Shrimp Taco and $1 Drink.... That's the menu. The fish and shrimp are battered and fried to your order and the salsa bar is pretty dope!! I like spicy, so I go Mango Less and Pineapple Kiss. There also have mild versions of those, as well as an interesting beet salsa. I know why they don't serve tortilla chips there, cuz if they did, they'd be making salsa all day!!
I woulda gave it 5 stars but they close at 8pm?? Who doesn't like eating tacos AFTER a great night on the town?? Still, a solid 4.5 stars!!
I went there on a Saturday night around 8:30 after the Sunset Junction Street Fair. Yes, there were plenty of food stalls at the fair but we were craving decent fish tacos. The menu, as everyone has noted, is simple; the options are: fish taco, shrimp taco, and a variety of non-alcoholic drinks. We grabbed a fish and shrimp taco each and shared a Diet Coke. The taco preparation is simple, there is a fry pot next to the register where they put in lightly battered shrimp and fish when ordered. My companion was a bit disappointed when the tortillas came out of a plastic bag and then heated on the comal rather than being made in-house, there is a certain flavor and texture that comes with fresh tortillas that you just can't buy.
Once the tacos are made, you are able to dress them as you please. They offer about 6 different salsas, including pineapple (it sounds sweet but it was perfectly acidic and spicy), radish, mango, spicy, mild, and guac salsa. In addition to the salsa, they have shaved cabbage and a plain crema, which adds a heavier component to the taco than my preferred white sauce. Overall, this place ranks high in my fish taco books but just not the epitomy of the fish taco I am looking for.
I have two minor complaints - the woman who works next to the mom has a gigantic mole on her arm and long hair growing out of it. It's disgusting and it makes me not want to eat there. Also the decor in general is really bad. I'm not saying it should be fancy or anything, but it's just really "off."
Otherwise the place is amazing.
I love this place! The tacos are the right price ($1.50 - $2.00) and are amazing! I have not had tacos like this at any restaurant in Los Angeles yet! I love how they are made right in front of you, so they are steaming hot and crunchy! The salsa bar has an exceptional selection of cabbage, mango salsa, pineapple salsa, hot salsa not hot salsa, radishes, and some sour cream type stuff that keeps the hot stuff in check!
Ok, I went here because i saw this spot on local news channel. The prices are great for each taco. The place is small and lacks the table wipe downs one would normally do when given the opportunity to own your own biz. I rate the tacos 3 stars but the lack of care when replacing the ice when melted for salsas and sour cream is why they get 1star for upkeep. I can see so much better from this location but so so is good enough for most i find in la county.....to bad cause i like fish tacos.......
Service: 4 stars
Taste: 3 stars
Cash only place.
$1.50 Fish Taco
$2.00 Shrimp Taco
$1.00 Drinks
We got there on a Sunday evening around 8:10pm and it was still opened.
The staff is very friendly. But, the place is not very clean...
They are generous with the fish portion. However, in terms of taste,
I like the fish tacos at Tacos Baja Ensenada in Whittier better. Also, the Horchata at Tacos Baja Ensenada in Whittier is better strained and not watered down.
Street parking only.
This place is great if you want to get lit up and eat good cheap tacos.
the good
outdoor seating and they don't care if you drink your face off all day.
fast and friendly service.
great tacos with an outstanding self-serve salsa bar.
the bad
terrible decor. outside not much prettier
terrible cheap furniture.
the guy that's always running the place might make you wait for long periods of time in line as he talks to all the girls in front of you. I don't know if the ladies are enjoying this but I'm not.
After hearing lots of good reviews about this place and finding out it was relatively close, JT and I finally made a stop in early one Saturday morning. They'd just opened so everything was fresh and it was fantastic. I tried both the fish and the shrimp and they were both good, just depending on what you were craving at the moment. I love how you can add condiments and toppings to your liking.
The key I think is to go during a bit of an off-time so it's freshly made. JT said he had gone before and was unimpressed with the shrimp, and I think it was because it may have been sitting out a bit, if they were busy and frying in larger batches.
Right after, we drove to a Del Taco and shared one of their fish tacos for comparison (hey, it's equal opportunity) and BFTE is definitely better ... just FYI haha.
Heard about them through some friends, and I was not disappointed! They cook the tacos right in front of you, and then you can add yummy guac, various salsas, cabbage, etc. It's very simple, but very yummy, and most importantly they make a hot salsa! Yum Yum! Even better, you can hardly beat the price at $1.50/per fish taco, $2.00/per shrimp taco, and $1.00/per drink...WOW!!! Try it, you'll love it!
Simple menu. Awesome people. A burst of yummy in your mouth.
Fish tacos, shrimp tacos and drinks. That's it. And that's all you need. We asked for chips, but they don't regularly serve them. The wife is preggers, so the cook lady fried up some tortillas for us - 50 billion times better than pre-made chips.
Food is better than average, but the decor and friendly service rockets the rating to a 5!
I prefer their shrimp tacos better than their fish.
I can't help but dislike this place, but I also can't fault the business: After eating at Best Fish Taco in Ensenada--I personally enjoyed three fish tacos and a bite of a shrimp taco--my throat started to tighten, my ears began to ache, and my breathing became wheezy. So I guess I'm allergic to whatever kind of fish they fry up for these delicious tacos... Or maybe it was the salsa, or the sauce, or the ginger beer... I've never shown an allergy to anything but scallops, after all. Who knows? The bottom line is that it isn't their fault.
Which is why I have decided to award Best Fish Taco five stars. Certainly, while I was eating the tacos they were soft and delicious. The owner was super friendly and the menu was simple and inexpensive... This place is like the In-N-Out of fish tacos. The only difference is that I don't need to take Benadryl after going to In-N-Out!
3.5 but rounded up to 4.
The tacos are good but the tacos at La Playita are better and on Taco Tuesdays only a buck. True, La Playita doesn't have a salsa bar but HEY, no need for it.
I am behind this place, I like the fact that it's a mom and pop, I like the fact that it's cheap as hell, I like that there's only two things on the menu and that they do them right.
My only gripe is that the few times I've been here, no ice. No ice as far as the eye can see. I hate drinking sodas out of the can, halfway through my meal on a hot day my soda is warm and warm soda makes me cranky. If Warm Soda was the name of a band, I would hate the band on principle. If I wanted to talk shit about this place I'd call it Warm Soda instead of the brevity-hating Best Fish Taco in Ensenada.
So please, for the love of all that's holy, please cater to us stupid Americans who love ice cubes in southern California in summertime and make some use of your freezer.
Other than that, yum!
Awesome little fish taco joint. Quick, cheap, and most important: tasty. They need more of these around.
$1.50 for fish taco
$2.00 for shrimp taco
If you're hungry, I'd say get 4 tacos and you'll be ok.
Gooooooooood Tacos, take it from a fat man.
The lady who said that they would rather eat Rubio's, I am talking to you Laurie R. Please never post another comment and stick to your chain restaurants. I heard TGIF is a great place to hangout.
EAT: Pick which taco you want, shrimp or fish. Then walk over to the salsa bar, pour indiscriminately over entire plate as all are delicious. Take deep breath as you will be inhaling not breathing for the next minute.
