I know there are a lot of mixed reviews about this place, but I personally had a decent experience. The service was fast and fairly attentive and the food was good. Not excellent, but good.

Once again, if you'll note my track-record, I'm not a huge fan of mexican food, so take this with a grain of salt.....and some tequila!!! Ok, but I joke. :-)

I've heard their margaritas are tasty, so I may go back for that. Basically, I didn't hate it and I'm sure I'd go back if my group was interested.

Just came back from this "joke" of a Mexican restaurant! Here on vacation and was looking for a good TexMex type place to eat, and i was sadly expecting a better experience.
Lousy food and even worse experience with the so-called waitstaff. Time for Gordon Ramsey to come in and do a top to bottom overhaul.
Dont waste your time and hard earned money at this dive.

If I could give this a rating of .5 or 00 stars I would!  This place is absolutely horrible for food.  I even spoke with the kitchen guy cooking (yah only 1 on a Sunday evening on the patio) and told him I just wanted traditional tacos, carne asada with cilantro and onions.  He knew cause we're both Mexican.  Oh hell no did he serve me some seriously nasty shit.  The rice, I've had better rice-a-roni!  The beans, couldnt be fixed with any amount of horrible salsa or anything.  Food is absolutely horrible.  My tortillas were hard and tasted like they had been baked 2 hrs previous.  Just not good.  The only thing good was the conversation we had with a local.  Only tried it cause of a friend who lives in the loft district.  DO NO EAT HERE PERIOD.  Very pricey and better food from a Del Taco on a 3am Saturday run.

PS ....service sucked too the guy talked on his phone and had trouble waiting on 2 tables in the whole restaurant on a Sunday afternoon.  I wouldnt feed the homeless dude this food if there was one around.

YES I MEAN ALL OF THIS....I'm refraining from using more vulgar words.

I'm not sure what the most recent reviewers are talking about.  This place has been closed since December 2008.  They did suck that bad.  See link below.

Beso means Kiss in Spanish.   When I finished eating at this stomach sore, the only kiss i got was from the porcelain goddess.  what a shit hole, and a shitty owner too from what I have been reading lately.

don't eat here unless you like tasting your own bile hours later.

So, there's a story that the owner is a dick.  From one person.  Uncorroborated.

I don't care.  The food was yummy.  They have portobello (well prepared and sliced thinly) as an option for most dishes.  And shark.  This makes the menu much larger for a pescetarian than most mexican places.

There's not really anything authentic about a bunch of 30ish white guys running a mexican place, but who cares?  Good prices, good food, great selection.  And a side of controversy for no extra charge.

The complimentary chips and salsa were A-mazing.  Half of our party loved their food (myself included), but the other half did not.  I did try my friend's Guacamole dip, and it was pretty much the most disgusting thing I've ever had.  Other than the Guac, I liked everything else. I highly suggest the stuffed nachos or chicken tacos.

HOWEVER -- the service was pretty much awful.  This was a great disappointment considering aesthetics of the restaurant itself and good food.

1st bad service experience:  Called to ask how long they served food and the owner yelled at us then hung up on is.  We thought maybe that was a fluke or bad connection on the phone.  We were wrong.  The server never checked on us throughout the whole meal.  He didn't offer to take my friend's Guacamole off her ticket or exchange it.  He dropped the check before we finished our first drink, yet we were planning on having many more.  The restaurant was empty, yet servers/owner just stood around giving what looked to be the evil eye.

2nd bad experience:  After Live off the Levee we went in to watch the last few innings of the Cardinal game.  All the Servers/bartenders/owners started yelling at each other, cussing, and glaring at guests.  My boyfriend and I sat patiently at the bar watching the game waiting for a beer.  They were acting like they were so PISSED they were getting business!  It became a stressful atmosphere and but everyone in a bad mood.  The owner was yelling at the servers to tell everyone "we're out of chips!! Don't give any out!! Just tell them were out!!"

Short review for the impatient: Fresh food and many margaritas!

Longer review...
Beso conveniently opened for the downtown living tour, and to thank them for their effort we made a point to stop by during lunch on Saturday.

Just inside, a well-stocked bar occupies the first third of the narrow restaurant, and further in Beso holds a surprising amount of booths and tables for a quieter meal. If it's nice out, they've got tables outside as well.

Chips, salsa, and water were promptly delivered after sitting at an interior table, and the speciality drink menu is worth browsing for their many margarita options. The medium house margarita was of adequate size and smooth, but I'll probably step up to something richer next time.

Entrees include your standard Mexican fare, and are moderately priced between 6 and 12 bucks for lunch, making it another good option for a midday escape from work. The food is fresh and tasty, but not particularly exciting. However, it *is* nice to have new place on Washington Ave that isn't too focused on trendy over practical.

"Beso" means "kiss"  - as in kiss your expectations for authenticity goodbye.

We tried a quesadilla and an order of fajitas.  Neither dish was well seasoned and there was no authentic Mexican flavor or spice in any of the dish components.   Meat and cheese tossed in between a few tortillas does not a Mexican meal make!  The chips and salsa were decent, but so are Pace and Tostitos, so I can't give them a lot of credit there.

What I WILL give them credit for is fast service.  I didn't expect much from the service at first, due to the scowl on our waitresses face. She looked like she'd rather be licking refried beans off the soles of shoes - but we gave her a chance and I'm glad to report that she didn't let us down.  When we asked for change for the parking meter she actually asked us which car was ours and put change in the meter herself - her money, not ours.  The owner also passed by, heard the conversation and told her to take care of it, not realizing she was already on top of it.

Despite the decent service, it wasn't quite good enough to convince me to give the food a second chance.

I'm going to have to BESO this one off.

I had called in a reservation for a large party, and due to some error, it never made it onto the books. Thus, we never found out that they would be closed last night until people from our party arrived and saw the sign on the door: Closed for Cleaning.

Instead of turning us away, the owner and his staff apologized profusely, changed the sign on the door to "Closed for Private Party", took us in, and treated us extraordinarily well.

I ordered soft tacos and they were great. The beans served as a side were right up there among the best in town, and the house-made sour cream was fantastic. I tried the tilapia special and it was cooked perfectly. Others in the party thought the food was standard fare, but I still see that as a feat given that the kitchen hadn't been prepped and running at all when we walked in the door.

Even though we surprised them with a visit, the staff, as I mentioned above, were all attentive, courteous, and friendly. I couldn't have asked for anything more from them.

I'm curious to try out the lunch buffet some day, and I will definitely return the next time I'm downtown and craving Mexican food.

I'm going to give them 3 stars for having the cojones to open a mexican restaurant in St. Louis at all.  There hasn't been a decent mexican place there since Flaco's Tacos and I doubt there will be another one in the near future.

I came here with a friend, a little leery from what I've seen on yelp.  I'm happy to say that the food and the drinks are very good here.  My friend got some sort of shark dish, which to me is gross but he liked it.  I just got some tacos, and they were really good.  The margaritas here are great, I had two and if I hadn't been getting tipsy I would have ordered more.  Our server was friendly and everyone seemed fine.

we made our first trip to beso for lunch on monday, only to discover they currently don't do lunch on mondays.

so we tried again wednesday for lunch. the service was slow, but by no means unfriendly. The food was tasty and particularly vegetarian friendly. there are portabella options for almost everything, including tacos, which was refreshing change of pace from my usual order of cheese-filled tortilla coated with cheese sauce.

overall, the service kinks are not cause to avoid beso, merely an excuse to take a long lunch. the food is affordable and the servings are human sized, they'll fill you up without having much left over.

i'd give i 3.5 stars, but i think 3 implies "did not like" and that's not the case. i liked it, i just wasn't wow'ed.

the menu consists of your average mexican fare "tacos filled with 5 different things, enchiladas filled with the same 5 things, etc, etc."  i had the portabella quesadilla which was way too simple for my taste, but not more simple than advertised.  my husband's enchiladas were much tastier.  most plates were $7-12, which is pretty decent for a washington ave restaurant.

everything tasted extremely fresh. i wouldn't have been surprised to learn that the pico was separate veggies moments before it arrived ar our table.  the (very reasonably priced) house margaritas were a bit watered down, but not surprisingly so.  the have a margarita list that rivals many martini bars with respect to quantity and i look forward to trying some more.

the best part?  i'd recommend it equally for lunch with the family as i would an office happy hour or dining out with your friends.

update: went back tonight before a show. had the stuffed nachos and they were incredibly tasty. topped it off with my fair share of a pitcher (or was that 2) of margaritas for a seriously low price.  upgrading my 3.5 to a full 4.0.

I'm writing in support of the person who alleges she was harassed after writing a negative review.  You can read a detailed account over at "Restaurateur Tries To Censor Yelp Review: EPIC FAIL".  I kind of wish this had gone to court, because then we could have access to testimony under oath as to the truth of this all.  If true, the restaurant owner should be punished -- and yelp should permanently link to a record of the decision.  The story is credible at the very least.
