10 reviews for Bert's Diner
I had been to Bert's once before for breakfast and was impressed then by the food and the service. This time I took my favorite dining partner so she could experience what I had been talking about.
Bert's is on Grant Line Road near Sheldon Road and I suppose some day it will be just another restaurant among strip malls along this soon to be freeway once the county expands this shortcut from I-5/99 to Folsom. Till then it is a nice trip back into small town, non elitist America where cycles and pickup trucks dominate the parking lot.
The wait staff were all friendly and were quick refilling water and coffee. The food was hot and generously portioned. We had the Avocado Omelette and Mushroom Omellete which were both huge and delicious. Be sure to order the biscuit as your "toast" as it is about 4x4x4 inches and comes with whipped butter and honey on the side.
I love the Tammy Wynette playing in the background and the jukebox stations at the tables. The condiment bottles and napkin holder could probably use a little elbow grease with a warm rag but then it adds a little to the character when everything is not so homogenized.
Worth a return trip and make sure to turn your coffee cups over if you want them filled.

My husband and I stopped in on a weekday for lunch.
The place was pretty dead but, we still had to wait 15 minutes to be acknowledged.
When our waitress did come over, she wasn't friendly or even attentive. She dropped our menus down and said " I'll be back."
She didn't ask us how we were....If we'd like drinks.... nothing.
We ordered our meal and in about 20 minutes a different waitress brought our food out.
I asked waitress # 2 how she was and If I could have another bottle of ketchup. She pointed to the bottle on our table and said " what's wrong with that one?" I showed her how nasty the bottle was and how ketchup was caked around the side. She said " so? you need another?"
After that, both girls disappeared to the back and neither of the came back.
We had to walk to counter and ask for refills and our check.
Our table and silverware were dingy and the service stunk.
In spite of all this nonsense, I decided to give Burt's a second chance.
( I mean - look at all the great reviews! I must have gone on an off day.)
Nope.
I went back again with a girlfriend midweek in the afternoon.
We walked in and the waitress behind the counter told us to sit anywhere.
We sat next to the window, and waited. and.......waited.
The waitress behind the counter looked over and turned back around.
Another server looked over and said " That area is closed. You can sit over here."
My friend piped up and said " uh... The waitress told us to sit anywhere."
And he replied " And, I'm telling you to sit here."
Needless to say, we left.

Went here for breakfast with some friends on a weekend.
The food was a pretty good deal. My meal was under $10 and came with a generous portion of corned beef hash, home fries, a couple over-easy eggs, and a huge house made biscuit. It's pretty hard to mess up corned beef, but Bert's version was good. The home fries were pretty tasty and cooked the way I like 'em, crispy - almost burnt on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. Eggs were just fine, and the biscuit was huge and flaky. I wish mine was baked maybe just another 1:30 or so, and it didn't show up with honey. I would consider biscuits and gravy if I returned. The coffee was on the weak side, and I would definitely pay more to have real cream or half and half on the table.
The service was pretty good, and our server was funny albeit a bit overdone. Luckily, I'm a good sport.
However, I definitely did note that the place was pretty dirty so minus a star as in I'm afraid of what the kitchen looks like. I know it was a busy weekend service, but a lot of what I noticed looked like it had been neglected for awhile. Some things I noticed include dried ketchup on salt shaker, dried something on glass on ice cream case, dingy floors, pile of swept up but not picked up trash and dirt near bathroom, dirty ladies' toilet, and something stuck to my shoe. Also, I was totally excited to play some songs on the main jukebox, but the page turner buttons didn't work.

Bert's Diner is the best place to go for breakfast in the Elk Grove area. It doesn't get much better. My family and I have been coming here for the past seven years. The waitresses are friendly and always make sure that your coffee mug is filled. (I guess I should admit that Bert's coffee is the one downside about the place.) My recommendation is the chicken fried steak and eggs with extra crispy hash browns. The steak and egg specials are also good.
I've never been here for lunch or dinner, but will always make a frequent trip for breakfast at Bert's.
We have been taking advantage of their Monday night burger deal. All of their burgers are half price! Where else can you get a great tasting burger with fries for about $4? The waitresses are all great, I never have to ask for a refill of my soda. I've never tried Bert's for breakfast but after reading the reviews here, guess where I'll be Saturday morning?
Bert's is the best thing going for where it's at. If you live out in or near Wilton like I used to, this is the place to eat if you don't want to eat at home or drive "into town."
While they are missing some standard diner fare, their Mexican food is strangely where they shine. It seems odd to order and eat Mexican in a 50's themed diner, but that's the magic of Bert's.
Don't forget to bring some quarters to put in their jukebox!

We went here for dinner. The food was very good. More than I was expecting from a diner, but that wasn't the best part. The pie was awesome!!! Tasted home-made just like my mom's. Definitely recommend this place. Especially if you have an entertainment book with a buy 1 Entree get 1 free coupon.
For a fun 50s diner atmosphere, this is the place.
For great diner food, there has to be better options.
The menu includes sandwiches, a few steaks, salads, Mexican food and hamburgers. Not sure where the chicken fried steak is, a staple of diner food.
The server was friendly but could not remember the soup that was ordered before the meal. The salad was forgotten as well. When I let her know that I no longer wanted the bowl of soup, since the entree had arrived, she was surprised and did not remember the soup had ever been ordered. Bert's Big One was featured on the menu as a diner broiler steak...well, it was big but had a very strange flavor. Definitely pass on the steaks at Bert's. Most people were eating the hamburgers and a few had the Mexican food.
I will go again and try the breakfast just because I really loved the building.

Mark sux.... im kidding.. this is a guy who has been a hard working antrepeneur starting at mcdonalds if i remember right. anyway.. if you live or have lived out here growing up this was the place to work and i did for a yr or so, my 1st gig very thankful for that. ( almost 20 yrs ago ) same owner. he was the new owner at the time.. anyway he has a hard work ethic and expects it from the employees and it shows and although i hated it at times it helped me later in life.
its a 50's diner, they used to have vintage cars out on friday nights i loved it but that has since dissapated and should probably be revisited or promoted. it adds to the flair of the place. anyways its a burger place.. cant screw up a burger right? well they dont. its good ( good mexican food too). a big plus for selling malts.. good food ata fair price with local staff usually younger running the place. i dont know.. i have high respect for a guy that offers employment to kids who dont have many options out towards the sticks. this place will never fold unless it becomes under new ownership or fire. go here worth the money, worth a visit, and worth maybe even helpin a kid or 2 go to school or buy their 1st car.. thats what i did.

I grew up in this diner. As a small child I counted down the days till our weekend outing to Berts. The Chocolate shakes were perfect for my school-age tastes. As I evolved to high school, the cheeseburgers were all I needed to survive. As I have matured, I delight myself in the healthy hearts menu and make sure I have my quarters all rolled up and ready to rock the jukebox.
