9 reviews for Bernard's - Ridgefield
My family has been going to Bernard's since before it was Bernard's and it has definitely improved in order to earn the 5 stars that I am giving it. The service is great - everyone is friendly, making sure your wine glass is filled, your napkin is refolded if you go to the restroom, or subtly sweeping up fallen crumbs between courses. If they overhear you asking a question about the menu, they'll be ready to answer. And the food is really enjoyable. Everything is extremely fresh - even on their busier prix fixe menu days. The wine list is extensive - which is always great!
For lunch today, I enjoyed Seared Sudan Peppercorn Crusted Tuna with an Avocado, Cucumber, Asparagus Roll and Lemon Chive American Caviar Sauce (so fresh!) to start followed by Loin of Lamb Stuffed with Spinach Served with Artichoke Hearts, Creamy Polenta, Sugar Snap peas, Cipolini Onions, and a Roasted Garlic Sauce. (Rich but yummy!) My one critique is that the desserts were rather uninspired. But, other times we've been the desserts have been wonderful. And dessert was followed by petits fours with the coffee. (Definitely made up for the gelatinous blood orange rice pudding).
A wonderful restaurant for a special occasion!
Most elegant, and delectable restaurant around. The staff appear enjoy their work, they are pleasant, happily answer my simplest of questions. Food was amazing from the appetizer, to espresso. Yum
If only I didn't live so far away:-(
I've been here several times, the most recent was for a Sunday dinner, the weekend after Mother's Day. The service is excellent, the wine list couldn't be better and the food is well.. spectacular!!! I had the sweetbreads with pea ravioli (which was totally not bland, just delicate and respectful of what the peas brought to the dish), it was divine - just the right amount of sweetbreads and ravioli on the plate.
I followed it up with the braised veal cheeks with white polenta and an apricot reduction- get this if you can it was amazing!!! The fiddlehead ferns and snap peas were cooked to perfection, the veal melted in your mouth and the polenta was rich, creamy, and perfectly complemented both the veal and the vegetables. The braised pork shank fell off the bone, I was lucky enough to taste what my boyfriend had!
Also, Bernard's head cheese is brilliant. It is not something that I would eat every day, but it was absolutely amazing and I'm sure that when I go back I will have it! His foie gras has always been astonishingly rich, creamy and just delicious - and I'm not a foie gras fan! His farm egg custard/foam thing is delicious, rich, creamy... I hear he loves to make the Emu eggs, so I guess I'd order that next time but there are so many things to choose from - and they are all amazing!
If you can, let Bernard pick the wine for you, it was the best decision we made. It perfectly complemented our meal, from beginning to end.
They have a new pastry chef, and everything that everyone at the table had was superb. I had the pistachio mousse tower, and could have eaten four of those - room in my stomach or not!!! The fruit was perfect, the mousse was light, fluffy and very flavorful. The creme brulee (I'm told) was perfect...
Go, because the food is divine and rivals anything that you'll have in Manhattan and costs about 110pp (incl tax, tip, and drinks!) If you want to treat yourself, go there. I'm seriously starting to doubt that I'll be able to eat better at Le Bernadin...
Not a sold out New England wedding factory establishment as so many other fine dining options have gone with such lovely surroundings. Piano while you eat, best brunch in Fairfield County, and everything is prepared with the utmost attention.
D and I went here for Valentine's Day 2008 and I must say I was impressed. I scoped out this place on my way home from work one day when I decided to take the back roads. You'd be surprised how many good, hidden restaurants there are in CT.
Menu (Pre Fixe for the holiday):
Starter: Salmon Trio: Salmon Tartar on Pomme Gaufrette, Seared w/ Black and White Sesame Seeds and Smoked Fennel Coulis and Crispy Vegetables. Rating 4 Stars.
Salad: Artichoke and White Asparagus Salad w/ Avacado, Yellow and Red Grape Tomatoes, Baby Arugula and Endive Balsamic Vinaigrette. Rating 5 stars.
Appetizer: Lobster, Butternut Squash and Ginger Ravioli w/ Spinach Ginger, Lobster Butter. Rating 5 stars. This was amazingly delicious.
Main Course: I had the Beef Wellington, Baby Vegetables and Truffle Sauce. Rating 5 stars. This was by far the best beef wellington I've ever had.
D had the Panko and Sage Crusted Filet of Striped Bass, Leek Fondue and Fingerling Potatoes. I had a taste and it was also delightful.
Their wine menu is in a huge binder. I thought our waitress was going to fall down under the weight of it. The atmosphere is quaint (its basically in a house) and they have a huge piano in the main room w/ live dinner music. They valet your car and they also have a coat check. All in all I would return to this place in a heartbeat.

I was lucky enough to have a manager at my old job who loved her employees. For our Christmas party, she took our department to Bernard's for dinner. Mind you, this was in addition to our corporate sponsored holiday event, so the fact that she took us all out was unnecessary, but welcomed.
I only mention that to point out that I did not pay for anything, although, had I, it still would've been worth every penny.
The food there was absolutely brilliant. I started with a trio of game sausages, which were outstanding. For my main course, I had an insanely decadent filet mignon beef wellington which was served with fois gras that was essentially melted over the top. Honestly, I don't even remember what I had for dessert (a rarity, considering I love sweets), but it's so insignificant compared to the rest of the food, because my meal was so perfect up to that point that even the Red Sox winning the world series again couldn't ruin it.
Unless you have lots of money, this isn't a "regular thing" kind of restaurant. It's definitely expensive. However, if you have a special occasion to celebrate, this is the mother effing place.

My boyfriend and I ate dinner at Bernard's for our anniversary in the fall.
The menu was quite interesting and included all manner of wild game dishes and charcuterie.
Each of our apps and entrees were delicious and perfectly seasoned though we were dissapointed in the pumpkin chocolate cheesecake, with the most tasty part of the dish being the candied pumpkin seeds.
Also, they seemed a little short staffed the night we visited and the boisterous gentleman maitre'd, though helpful, killed the mood a bit. (We could hear him all the way from the other side of the restaurant)
Though definately pricier than other Ridgefield restaurants, I'd say Bernard's has the best food, and perhaps the ambiance would be more romantic on a different night of the week. (Thus the loss of one star)
Reallly, really cute restaurant. The inside is fancy and beautiful! The restaurant just has an authentic New England feeeel!
The food was delicious. I was there for lunch so my options were not to the full extent but i was perfectly satisfied.
Today was my first experience of "sweetbreads" and GOD DAMN! was it good! Sauteed to a crisp with lots of seasoning, tender, and it was perfect with the bland green pea ravioli, and creamy mushroom sauce.
For an entree i got the lobster beet salad. There was a whole lobster!!! 2 claws and two strips of body meat! And it was beautifully placed on top of 3 different colored delicious beets! Light and refreshing!
My mom got the crab meat salad with mangoes.... this was kinda bland.
Her steak was delicious... the red wine sauce was delicious along with the perfectly medium rare, tender beef!!!!
For dessert, i got the mango and pineapple crisp with mango ice cream. Very good, if not a little too sweet for my taste! There wasn't much mango in the crisp part, mostly pineapple, and the "crisp" part was insanely crispy!! It wasn't the usual oats, brown sugar, and flour crisp... it was extremely crunchy! The mango ice cream was DEEEEELISH!
I couldn't decide between the mango and pineapple crisp and dark chocolate and caramelized banana cake so i got the banana cake to take home. I am writing this as i eat this delicious, moist, brownie like cake. yummmm.......
I felt a little out of place because i was dressed sporty... i was just coming back from a golf training session... everyone else was dressed REALLLY nice!

The restaurant in the renovated historic Inn at Ridgefield is now open to the public, and it proves to be one of the best options in town. The last thing I'd expect to find in this charming New England village is a five-star restaurant serving cuisine as creative as this - especially at lunch - so I wasn't prepared to start with a breathtaking fricassee of snails in a crisp crepe with fava beans and tomato confit. Nor was I ready for the mouthwatering roasted monkfish osso bucco wrapped in rosemary pancetta, or the tender, not-at-all-gamey venison chop and medallion with spaetzel and braised cabbage my brother ordered. A piano standing in the main dining parlor is played on Friday and Saturday evenings and during Sunday brunch. Definitely worth a return visit or two . . . or three or more.
