My hotel window overlooked the closed off street for Octoberfest, the same hotel (drake?) used the movie "the fugitive". Anyway, had a decent house beer in the street without food. They sell nice looking Berghoff pint glasss & glass mugs.

I'd eaten here a few times before when in Chicago. This place had great German Food. And the service was impeccable. Now that it's merely a bar, I probably won't be stopping back here.
Dangerfield's trademark line was "I'll tell ya, I get no respect" and that's true of vital landmarks in cities these days. The Berghoff is no exception. Last time I was there, I popped in to pay homage by ordering a brau and sauerbraten during a layover. Hung out at the bar amongst the newspaper folk and downtown set, listening to their chatter during happy hour ... or is it happy hours there?. The Berghoff always had an incredible sense of energy! The dark wood just soaked you into the atmosphere of the place. It oozed character. It'll break my father's heart to know that one of his old collegiate haunts is no more. Let's hope that landmarks don't all turn into Panda Expresses.... Look out Russian Tea Room?? Naaaaah!! I'll preserve my Berghoff matchbooks.

My favorite thing about the Berghoff, even more than the food, is the atmosphere. It's not hard to feel the history of the place, or imagine people dining here 100 years ago. The sauerbraten and pot roast were good, and service was friendly but professional. Is it the most authentic German food? Who cares! Go experience a piece of Chicago history before the doors close for good.

this place had "OK" food, it was more legendary since it had been a Chicago landmark for so long before closing recently
So many people are moaning about the demise of The Beghoff, but how many people actually eat there on a regular basis? Personally, my last visit there was sometime in the mid to late 80s

A Chicago institution. The Berghoff has indeed been around forever-they hold the city's first liquor license! Traditional in every way, from the primarily German staff, to the outstanding food and of course their own beer. All around a great place, particularly when they decorate around the holidays.
Quick, go before this place disappears! I heard on the radio a few days ago that they are planning on closing in Feb. '06! I hope they change their mind or there is a public outcry or something!
This place is a Chicago landmark and I have been coming here since I was a kid. The food is good German-American food, they have great career waiters, it is all dark wood paneled and cozy.
I remember coming to the bar when i came of age and proudly ordering one of their great dark beers. Lots of good memories in this place. We would come before going to the Art Institute or the theater; it is convenient because of its central downtown location.
Go soon!
The Berghoff has been around since 1898 and their experience shows in everything that they do. The food is exquisite and the atmosphere is very nice. The service given here is among the best in the city. The prices are very reasonable for the quality provided.
This place rocks! The food is excellent. Huge steaks and chops that are first rate is one of their specialtys. They also serve some first rate seafood and of course German style foods. They even have their own brand of beer and root beer. The main room is huge with a high cieling, decorated Bavarian style. They also have a gift shop that celebrates their 100 plus yrs. in Chicago. Also being right in the heart of the Loop is another plus. Thumbs up!
This legendary Chicago restaurant is pretty beautiful and excellent to visit. There was not a lot on the menu for vegetarians, as I had expected there would not be. Had a delicious root beer float and a satisfying meal in comfortable and historical surroundings. Prices were better than I had expected. If you live in Chicago, you should probably visit this place at least once.
I would only give this place three stars, but I'm biased because I despise German food (although for some reason saurkraut has been growing on me). Anyone who loves the artery-clogging creamy-meatiness of that kind of food should love it. And even if you don't, they have their own brand of beer and root beer, and the decor is pretty stunning in that fancy early 20th century style.
I think German food is pretty good and this restaurant does a decent job. I got a potato pasta w/ a pesto type sauce which was yummy. A lot of their meals are very filling so be hungry when you go! The German beers were my favorite...they give you a nice German beer mug to drink out of too! Cheers..
A Chicago fixture since 1898, this busy dining room serves its own locally-brewed beers - and a sensational root beer for non-drinkers - to wash down traditional German specialties. Top off the generous meal with warm apple strudel a la mode or Black Forest torte. Dieses ist gut.

Though I loved German food in my younger years, I seldom visited the Berghoff as I tended to favor the many other charming German restuarants that still existed up on the north side 10+ years ago - Golden Ox, Zum Deutschen Eck, etc. As those places began to disappear I started to appreciate the Berghoff a little more - but soon they too will be gone (closing after 2/28/2006). Their food was pretty good, I loved their creamed spinach, and the decor and atmosphere were old-timey & classy. Berghoff had lots of "career" waitstaff & I have heard stories about how they could get snippy if you didn't tip them in just the "right" way, but still it's nice sometimes to be treated with professionalism & seriousness by folks who consider service a "profession" rather than a part-time or temp gig. Hopefully their staff will find rewarding post-Berghoff positions, perhaps with the banquest/catering service that will be replacing the restaurant.
