Review Highlights
I just had my first Baltimore Berger Cookie. OM NOM NOM NOM.
(Now that I'm able to speak coherently again...)
That was a great cookie! The fudge-y frosting was perfect. This cookie was perfect. That is all.
I love/hate Beth L. for pointing out that they sell these at the Columbia Heights Giant :)
Dense and Rich are two words that can be used to describe the famous Baltimore Berger Cookie.
It's quite similar to a Black & White cookie. The cookie part is a bit more dense and chewier. Instead of royal icing, it's a super fudge-y frosting/topping that coats the top.
Really need a nice glass of milk to cut the rich sweetness of the frosting.
Berger's Bakery also has a location within Lexington Market (across from Polock Johnny's).
It was just 3.5 hours ago when I lost my Berger cookie virginity in the driver's seat of my car. I've heard about these cookies only a few months ago, even though I grew up in the area. Bothered by reading about them without having ever tried one, I FINALLY set up a quest to Giant, just to get a package. After frantically looking through the bakery section and almost convinced they weren't in stock, I found them hidden below a table of breads or cookies or cakes (whatever they weren't on my radar).
I ripped the package as I was walking out the store, but in an attempt to maintain some dignity, waited until I got inside my car to eat one. The 30 second anticipation during the walk to my car was almost unbearable. I took my first bite into the soft, chocolate frosted cookie and thought "this is aight," but upon further chewing, the soft cookie covered in the perfect amount of what seems to be in between chocolate frosting and fudge, was more than just "aight."
Good thing I put the rest of the package in the trunk, because I would have finished the entire package in the 30 second drive home. Oh Berger cookie, you have just made me love Baltimore.
THE best cookie ever.
Tivoli Square Giant in Columbia Heights carries them.
Dunno that I believe the nutritional info (140 calories and 4.5 grams of fat). If it's true, dats the best tasting 140 calories I ever et.
I like to put 'em in the freezer so that I forget they're there. But one time I chipped a toof on the hardened icing, so be careful!
A day gets no better than an Eddie's shrimp salad sandwich, followed by a big ol' Berger cookie. Well, at least...it used to get no better than that.
Now, a day gets no better than -- as the sun goes down and everyone crowds closer to the bonfire on the beach, after a day in the sun -- passing around the Berger cookies I have shipped from home, and savoring the fudgey goodness.
As you watch the expressions on the faces gathered around you, for the first time tasting cookie perfection (if you can even call this a cookie), it's among the most highly satisfying food experiences one can have.
I look forward to my shipments with a fervor that is bordering on unhealthy. I have learned to live without snowballs with marshmallow topping...I have weaned myself from Utz Crab Chips. But being without Berger Cookies?
Never.
I know most of my LA Yelper friends will see the Baltimore location on this review and immediately skip it in favor of another write-up on Father's Office or Scoops or that cupcake bakery with the edible dots.
Of course, by choosing to read yet another opinion on the red velvet at Sprinkles instead of the precious information I am about to reveal here would be a travesty. Nay, a calamity of epic proportions unparalleled since the re-election of George W. Bush to the presidency.
Okay, that was just uncalled for. (Especially since I straddle the saddle between the elephant and donkey.) But I know my LA audience will appreciate the jab -- just as they will come to appreciate what I have to say about Berger cookies, the decadent Baltimore treat that I have recently discovered due to the assistance of an East Coast-based foodie blogger.
I like to think of a Berger Cookie as a fudgey, frosted brownie smashed on top of a cake-like, moist sugar cookie. It is so soft, so delicious, and so very very worthy of stomach space, that I am almost ready to crown it the King of all cookies. I think it might supersede the chocolate chip from Vie de France at my local Orange County mall, the frosted sugar cookie from Al's deli in Evanston, IL, and the oatmeal raisin from Urth Cafe in LA. Nay, I don't think, I know in the core of my chocoholic, sugar-snoting being.
So how is this information at all relevant to those crazy Los Angelos whose reviews I "useful," "cool" and "funny" on a regular basis?
Berger cookies are available to order on-line. For $5 a box and $10 in shipping charges, these precious puppies can make everyone's sugar plum dreams come true.
Except for the carbophobs who don't eat refined sugars. And as far as I'm concerned, they can just suck it.
I used to buy these for all my events at a school...everybody loves them, who can resist?
Fresh is best because sometimes the cookie part is dry. The fudge is fudgy and very chocolatey. One is enough--they are so rich!
Can be bought at Eddie's, Lexington Market, and other local joints.
These cookies are like thick versions of your average chocolate top....not always a bad thing...but still. My main issue with Berger cookies is that they contain trans fat! Trans fat seems to have been almost eliminated in all other foods, Berger should reconsider asap
Now I buy these at Weis Markets, normally, because it's easier than driving all the way to the factory, but my dad used to do that for us. Much better than the cakes, I think . . . they don't have the same flavor or ratio of frosting to cake.
Another bonus, you can usually find them at Costco and can buy 2 packages for a good price. Freeze one and eat the other . . . or just eat both!! : )
They do get moldy, though. I exercised great restraint one time and forgot about the expiration date. A whole box of them was ruined. *sob*
The greatest cookie ever created. Take a big, soft cookie, then double its weight by adding a slathering of chocolate fudge. The slathering is done by hand as well, giving each berger cookie a unique look and cookie/fudge ratio.
Anyone living in and around Baltimore is lucky enough to be able to swing into any Royal Farms or Giant and pick up a package. For those unfortunate souls in the DC area, I've included the list of places that carry the cookie.

Better pick up some milk too. . .
yeah, probably not good for you...
i lived in baltimore way back in the day, so why have i never heard of berger cookies until now? well, at least my sister got to one up me and show me something new for a change!
cookies are real good though. wifey says coating is fudge, but i think it is chocolate frosting, like on a chocolate cake.
Baltimore's finest cookie.
I'd drive up from DC for a Bergers if I had to. One cannot properly put in to words the heaven that is their puffy sugar cookie slathered in thick fudge. I'd eat a pack a day if I could.
Just learned about this cookie today by chance. Thanks to another review I saw a local place that sold them. I stopped by during lunch and picked up a pack. The package is heavy (1lbs, 10 cookies) and through the plastic you can see why. The cookies are loaded with at least a 1/4in of fudge on one side.
I tried one so far and they are easily one of the best cookies I have ever had. I would imagine some cold milk would make the experience even better. I don't think I could eat more than one at a time though.
The next time I am near Baltimore I will stop by the bakery and see how freshly baked ones compare. Definitely worth the effort to track these things down.
I LOVE Berger Cookies. They are practically an institution in Baltimore. They sell them at Lenny's on Reisterstown Road. They aren't healthy but that's precisely why they're delicious!
Completely overwhelmingly decadent! I can never finish one but if I stop by lexington market I make sure to grab one every time!
